I- LETTER FROM THE CHAIR: During 2011, the Clinical and Chemical Pathology Department continued its tradition of 3 CCCs of Togetherness which are: Collaboration, Cooperation and Communication. Working together with 250 faculty members, nearly 44 residents and several hundred Technologists & Technicians, nurses, administrators, and staff who make up the department, we have made rapid strides toward achieving those goals. This year we achieved an overall annual productivity of 4,598,604 tests which could not have been reached without our dedicated manpower (1,000 employees). With the appointment of new Heads of Laboratories, Heads of Units and Laboratory Directors and with the creation of an Executive Committee, the Department now has the infrastructure it needs to continue its path.
All through 2011, we continued a steady expansion in our three major missions; Laboratory Services, Teaching & Training and Research Activities. In the Laboratory service arena, we continued to push ahead with the implementation of Quality Assurance System at Al– Manial Clinical Pathology Laboratory and Chemical Pathology Laboratory which will expand to the rest of our labs very soon. A new IT system was introduced during March 2011 at Abou El-Rish Lab. With that implementation there is interfacing between the Lab machines and the Lab computer system in 5 out of our 8 Labs. Teaching & Training activities also remained very strong. Our goal is to train Clinical & Chemical Pathologists who will make a difference whether they chose a career path in academic medicine or in clinical practice. In addition to the pre– master & pre-doctorate teaching & training programs we now offer a 2 week condensed summer training program to undergraduate students.
In the Research arena, several research projects were funded by the faculty under the roof of the 2-5yr plan for the Research activities of the Department which involved all 4 specialties of the Department (Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Chemistry. As for our international publications, over 20 articles were published by our faculty, several of which were in the high impact journals. Another source of pride was that the Department held a third very successful Scientific Conference; 3rd CLINCHEM 2011 “Genetics and Tissue Engineering”, which was held at the Cairo International Conference Center from 3rd - 5th of April, 2011. The Department is building on an extraordinary legacy and we plan to make it a yearly event. There is also a collaborative initiative with the Egyptian Society of Laboratory Medicine in their upcoming Conference that will be held during April 2012. In summary, the Department remains strong and undergoing carefully planned incremental growth, reflecting both our role in academia and in Laboratory service. With the opening of the 2 new Labs at the New Maternity Hospital and New ER Hospital we look forward to gradual recruitment of several more staff and also to working closely with all of our other colleagues in the Faculty and Hospital to build our research, teaching and clinical enterprise in a fashion that melds with programmatic directions of the University as a whole. Prof. Dr. Safaa Al-Karaksy

6. Executive Committees 1. Executive Committee for Laboratory Affairs: As things evolved over time, we found that it was necessary to form an Executive Committee, which has been meeting every month for the past couple of months usually one week prior to the Board meeting of the Department. At those meetings, the Executive Committee reviews the major issues facing the Department, weighing pros and cons and making preliminary decisions, to be ratified by the Board as a whole at the actual Board meeting of the Department. The Committee is comprised of: 1. The Chair of the Department: Prof. Safaa Al-Karaksy 2. The Head of the Laboratories

3. The Laboratory Directors · Prof. Badawy Al-Kholy · Prof. Mona Salah · Prof. Hala Gabr · Prof. Iman Mansour · Dr. Magda Negm · Dr. Sahar Azab · Dr. Sherine Abdel-Kadr
2. Executive Committee for Blood Bank Affairs: Since the Department is responsible for the Technical supervision of the Blood Bank an Executive Committee for the Blood Bank has also been formed which will review and discuss any issues facing the Blood Bank. The Committee will start meeting on monthly basis starting from next month, typically one week prior to the Hospital Board meeting. The Committee is comprised of:
1. The Chair of the Department (Prof. Safaa Al-Karaksy) 2. The Head of the Blood Bank (Prof. Mervat Al-Ansary) 3. The Blood Bank Director (Dr. Sahar Azab) 4. The Deputy Head of the General Hospitals 5. Other members (to be determined).

6- ClinChem Conferences The Department held 3 very successful Scientific Conferences 2010-2011. The 1st CLINCHEM 2010 Conference" Molecular Biology: Into the future" held from 31st of March -2nd of April at CICC had a record-breaking attendance of nearly 600 participants in the could not have been achieved without the support of sponsors like SIEMENS,EL-DAWLEYA,TECHNOSCIEN, CLINILAB,ETICO,ENDOMEDIX&ULTRADIAGNOSTICS. I n response to the feedback we received from our attendees and sponsors we decided to launch the 2nd CLINCHEM 2010 Conference "Transfusion Medicine & Quality updates: Revolution not evolution" that was held on the 24th of October, 2010 at the Learning Resources center at Kasr Al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University which was another great success thanks to sponsors such as DIA MED, FUTURE HORIZON, SPECTRA, SIEMENS & INTERPHARM. Another source of pride was that the Department held a third very successful Conference; 3rd CLINCHEM 2011 “Genetics and Tissue Engineering”, which was held at the Cairo International Conference Center from 3rd - 5th of April, 2011.
The Department is building on an extraordinary legacy and we plan to make it a yearly event. There is also a collaborative initiative with the Egyptian Society of Laboratory Medicine regarding their upcoming Conference that will be held during April 2012.
