2011 TEXANS2011 TEXANSSCHEDULE NOTESSCHEDULE NOTES

Date Opponent All-Time Series Note 9/11/11 Indianapolis 2-16-0 Houston looks for back-to-back home wins against its AFC South rival for the fi rst time in team history. The Texans set a team rushing record the last time they met in Reliant Stadium behind RB Arian Foster’s 231 yards rushing in the 2010 season opener. 9/18/11 at Miami 5-0-0 Houston looks to remain unbeaten in a series that has seen all fi ve games decided by a touchdown or less. 9/25/11 at New Orleans 1-1-0 The Texans make their fi rst regular season visit to the Louisiana Superdome since the 2003 season. It will also mark the sixth time the Texans have played an opponent in the preseason and regular season, going 2-3 in those meetings. 10/2/11 Pittsburgh 1-2-0 The defending AFC Champions return to Reliant Stadium for the fi rst time since 2005. No game has been closer than 18 points in the series. 10/9/11 Oakland 5-1-0 The teams will meet for the sixth consecutive year and for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. Houston’s fi ve wins against the Raiders tie for the most against in franchise history against any non-division opponent. 10/16/11 at Baltimore 0-4-0 Texans look to avenge a tough overtime loss on Monday Night Football in 2010 and grab their fi rst win in fi ve games against Baltimore. 10/23/11 at Tennessee 5-13-0 The teams have split their last six meetings. Houston has swept the season series with the Titans just once, in 2004. 10/30/11 Jacksonville 9-9-0 The Texans closed out the 2010 season with a 34-17 win against the Jaguars in Reliant Stadium. Houston’s nine wins in the series are the most against any single franchise. 11/6/11 Cleveland 3-3-0 Houston has held Cleveland to less than 20 points in each of the last four meetings between the two teams, winning three of those contests. 11/13/11 at Tampa Bay 1-1-0 Houston plays Tampa Bay in some capacity for the 10th year in a row. These teams have met nine times in the preseason but will meet for just the third time in the regular season. 11/27/11 at Jacksonville 9-9-0 Houston will look to get its fi rst win in Jacksonville since 2006. The 2010 game in Jacksonville ended with a Hail Mary being defl ected into the arms of Mike Thomas as time expired, giving the Jaguars the win. 12/4/11 Atlanta 1-1-0 The Texans play host to the Falcons for the second time ever and fi rst time since the 2003 season, a 17-13 Houston win at Reliant Stadium. Texans WR Andre Johnson (4,360 yards) and Falcons WR Roddy White (3,925) rank fi rst and second in the NFL, respectively, in receiving yards since 2008. 12/11/11 at Cincinnati 2-3-0 Houston goes for its third-straight win in the series and second straight in Cincinnati. 12/18/11 Carolina 2-0-0 Houston will play against the top pick in the 2011 Draft. The Texans scored 34 unanswered points in a 34-21 win when the teams last met in Week 2 of 2007. 12/22/11 at Indianapolis 2-16-0 The Texans look for their fi rst road win ever at Indianapolis. 1/1/12 Tennessee 5-13-0 Four member’s of Tennessee’s coaching staff either coached or played for the Texans at one time: offensive coordinator Chris Palmer, linebackers coach Frank Bush, offensive line coach Bruce Matthews and wide receivers coach Dave Ragone.

2011 TEXANS2011 TEXANSSCHEDULE NOTESSCHEDULE NOTES

HOME AND AWAY NOTES • Houston opens at home for the seventh time in 10 years and

the third year in a row.

• The Texans end the season at home for ninth time in 10 years and for the sixth consecutive season. The Texans have closed the year at home in every season under head coach Gary Ku-biak. Kubiak is 5-0 in season fi nales.

• This is the fi fth season under head coach Gary Kubiak in which the Texans will open and close the season at home.

• The Texans 2011 schedule is extremely balanced, with each four-game quarter of the schedule featuring two home games and two road games.

• After the home opener against Indianapolis, the Texans’ next 10 games will alternate between back-to-back away games and back-to-back home games (A-A-H-H-A-A-H-H-A-A).

• For the second consecutive season, the Texans will face an opponent in preseason and again in Week 3 of the regular season. Houston hosts New Orleans in both teams’ second pre-season game and travels to the Crescent City in Week 3.

SERIES HISTORY NOTES • Houston will look to stay unbeaten against Miami (5-0) and

Carolina (2-0).

• The Texans will aim for their sixth wins against Miami (5-0) and Oakland (5-1), which would be the most against a non-divi-sion opponent in franchise history.

• The Texans will have an opportunity to pick up their fi rst-ever win against Baltimore (0-4).

• Houston will be looking to take the lead in series against fi ve clubs: Atlanta (series tied 1-1), Cleveland (3-3), Jacksonville (9-9), New Orleans (1-1) and Tampa Bay (1-1).

• Houston will face Cleveland (3-3) and Oakland (5-1) for the seventh time in franchise history, making them the most common non-divisional opponents in the franchise’s history.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE NOTES • Houston’s opponents had a combined record of 132-124 in

2010 for a winning percentage of .516. That ties the Texans for the 10th-toughest schedule in the league based on last year’s re-sults, along with the Miami Dolphins and the Minnesota Vikings.

• Three of Houston’s fi rst four opponents have hoisted the Lom-bardi Trophy within the last six years. Indianapolis (Week 1) won Super Bowl XLI (2006); New Orleans (Week 3) claimed Super Bowl XLIV (2009); and Pittsburgh won Super Bowl XLIII (2008).

• The Texans will play six games against 2010 playoff teams and seven games against teams that fi nished last season with winning records. Houston also plays four games against teams that fi nished 8-8 a year ago.

• Houston will play fi ve games against teams holding top-10 picks in this month’s NFL Draft, including one against Carolina, who holds the fi rst overall pick, and two against Jacksonville (eighth overall).

• Houston plays fi ve games against teams with new head coaches: two games against Tennessee (Mike Munchak) and one each against Carolina (Ron Rivera), Cleveland (Pat Shur-mur) and Oakland (Hue Jackson).

PRIME TIME NOTES • Houston will make one scheduled appearance in prime time

this season, traveling to Indianapolis to face the Colts on Thurs-day, December 22 at 7:20 p.m. CST on NFL Network.

• The game will be the 11th prime-time game and third Thurs-day night game in franchise history. Houston played on NFL Net-work’s Thursday Night Football last season at Philadelphia and hosted Denver in 2007. Houston is 3-7 in prime time and 1-1 on Thursday.

• Houston is 2-4 in prime time under head coach Gary Kubiak.

• The Texans will play a road game at Indianapolis in prime time for the second year in a row. Last season, Houston played at Indianapolis on Monday Night Football on November 1.

• The Indianapolis game is the third prime time road contest in Texans history. Houston is 0-2 in prime time road games with the previous appearances coming on ESPN’s Sunday Night Football at Seattle, a 42-10 loss in 2005 and last year’s 30-17 loss at Indianapolis on Monday night.

• Including preseason play, Houston will play two nationally-televised games this season. The Texans also host the New York Jets on ESPN’s Monday Night Football on August 15.

AFC SOUTH NOTES • Houston will host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Septem-

ber 11. That date will mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City of September 11, 2001.

• Houston opens the season against the Indianapolis Colts for the second year in a row. The Texans defeated the Colts 34-24 in the 2010 season opener at Reliant Stadium.

• The Texans close the season against a divisional opponent for the fi fth time in franchise history and the second year in a row. Last season, the NFL dedicated Week 17 to featuring all intra-division games. Houston is 2-2 in season fi nales against AFC South opponents.

• For the third consecutive year and the third time in team his-tory, the Texans open and close the season against teams from the same division. In 2010, Houston opened at home against In-dianapolis and hosted Jacksonville to close the season. In 2009, Houston opened with the New York Jets and closed with the New England Patriots, both from the AFC East. It is the second time the Texans will open and close against AFC South teams.

• The Texans will face a division opponent in prime time for the fourth consecutive season when they play at Indianapolis on Thursday, December 22. Houston is 1-2 against division oppo-nents in prime time, defeating Jacksonville 30-17 (12/1/08) and falling to Tennessee 20-17 (11/23/09). The Texans lost at India-napolis 30-17 (11/1/10). All were Monday night games.

• Houston’s cumulative record against division opponents is 16-38 all-time after posting a 3-3 division record in 2010. The Texans are 9-9 against Jacksonville, 5-13 versus Tennessee and 2-16 against Indianapolis.

• Houston closes the season against Tennessee for the second time in team history. The Texans fell to the Titans 13-3 to con-clude the franchise’s inaugural season in 2002.

• The Texans and Titans have split the season series in each of the last three seasons.

• The Texans are 6-3 against the Jaguars at Reliant Stadium. Houston will look to end a four-game losing streak at Jackson-ville.

AFC NORTH NOTES • Houston will play every team in the AFC North for the fourth

• Houston is 6-12 all-time against the AFC North and 4-4 under head coach Gary Kubiak.

• Houston will take on Baltimore for the second consecutive season. The Ravens defeated the Texans 34-28 in overtime on Monday Night Football (12/13/10) last season.

• The Texans will be in search of their fi rst-ever win over Bal-timore. The Ravens have won all four prior meetings between the two clubs.

• The Texans will look to even the all-time series against both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The Bengals hold a 3-2 lead on the Texans, while Pittsburgh has won two of its three meetings with Houston.

NFC SOUTH NOTES • The Texans own a 5-3 record against the NFC South.

• Kubiak has a 1-7 record against the NFC East and is 9-3 against the rest of the NFC, including a 3-1 mark against the NFC South.

• The Texans will face the Buccaneers for the 10th consecu-tive season, including preseason play. Houston and Tampa Bay faced one another in the fi nal preseason contest every year from 2002-2010 and squared off in regular season play in 2003 and 2007.

TEXANS-RAIDERS SERIES NOTES • The Texans face Oakland for the sixth consecutive season

and the seventh time in eight years. Including a preseason con-test in 2005, the Texans and Raiders have faced each other in each of the last eight years.

• Houston has faced the Raiders every year under head coach Gary Kubiak. Raiders head coach Hue Jackson will be the third Oakland head coach that Kubiak has faced in his six seasons in Houston.

• The Texans will look to improve their record against the Raid-ers to 6-1 all-time and 4-1 in Oakland.

TEXANS-DOLPHINS SERIES NOTES • The Texans face the Dolphins for the sixth time in team his-

tory and for the fi fth time in six seasons under head coach Gary Kubiak.

• The Texans will look to remain unbeaten against the Dolphins. Houston is 5-0 all-time, including Kubiak’s fi rst career victory as head coach in 2006.

• The Texans are 9-9 all-time against teams from the AFC East.

2011 HOUSTON TEXANS DRAFT GUIDE • HOUSTONTEXANS.COM

The Houston Texans will participate in the franchise’s 10th NFL Draft Thursday, April 28, through Sunday, April 30. Houston has eight picks in the Draft, one in each of the fi rst six rounds, in-cluding the 11th overall pick, and two picks in the seventh round.

In addition to the 11th overall pick, the Texans have the 10th pick in the second round (42nd overall), ninth pick in the third round (73rd), eigth pick in the fourth round (105th), seventh pick in the fi fth round (138th), 13th pick in the sixth round (178th), 11th pick in the seventh round (214th) and the last pick in the draft at 254th overall.

The Texans’ fi nal pick will be this year’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” the moniker granted to fi nal draft pick each year in the NFL. In 2002, the Texans also had the last pick in the Draft and selected Ah-mad Miller out of UNLV.

Houston has a solid Draft history, having selected seven play-ers who have gone on to participate in Pro Bowls since 2002, tied for the seventh-most in the NFL in that span. Four of those Pro Bowlers have been selected since head coach Gary Ku-biak’s took the reins in 2006, which ties for the second-most in the NFL in that time.

While Houston is relatively young as a franchise, a strong trend has already been set regarding its fi rst round draft picks. Nine of Houston’s 10 fi rst round draft selections have gone on to start 14 or more games as a rookie with the franchise. Eight have started every game as a rookie, including current Texans WR Andre Johnson (2003), DE Mario Williams (2006), LT Duane Brown (2008), LB Brian Cushing (2009) and CB Kareem Jackson (2010).

Either immediately or through longevity, several Texans drafted after the fi rst round by the team have made profound contribu-tions. But the fourth round seems to be where the Texans get there greatest contributions, with the exception of fi rst round draft picks. The Texans have had four fourth rounders named to Pro Football Weekly’s All-Rookie Team and two selected to the Pro Bowl.

RB Domanick Williams (2003 4th round, 101st pick)Named NFL Rookie of the Year in 2003 after rushing for 1,031

yards. Went on to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons but had his career cut short by injury. Is the franchise’s all-time lead-ing rusher with 3,195 yards. Was also named to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team.

WR Jerome Mathis (2005 4th round, 114th pick)Mathis was named to the 2006 Pro Bowl and All-Pro after re-

turning 54 kickoffs for 1,542 yards and two touchdowns in just 12 games. He ranked second in the NFL with a 28.6 average and was named to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team.

TE Owen Daniels (2006 4th round, 98th pick)Daniels ranks third in franchise history with 240 receptions for

2,972 yards with 16 touchdowns and was elected to the 2009 Pro Bowl. He was named to the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team after

LB Xavier Adibi (2008 4th round, 118th pick)Though he only played in seven games as a rookie, Adibi re-

corded 34 tackles and a fumble recovery to earn a spot on the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team. Registered 14 tackles in his fi rst career start against Indianapolis.

FINDING IT IN THE FOURTH

The Texans have had nine draft picks earn spots on the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie Team, including four from the fourth round.

First-rounders aren’t the only impact players drafted by the Texans. Below is a look at some of the most impactful players drafted by the Texans after the fi rst round.

LG Chester Pitts (2002 2nd round, 50th pick) Became a mainstay at left guard for the Texans for the better

part of the next eight seasons, starting a franchise-record 114 consecutive games.

LB DeMeco Ryans (2006 2nd round, 33rd pick)Ryans has been a leader in the locker room and in the huddle

since joining the team. He is the Texans all-time leading tackler and has made two Pro Bowls. Ryans ranked second in the NFL in tackles from 2006-2009.

RT Eric Winston (2006 3rd round, 66th pick)Winston has started the last 71 games at right tackle for the

Texans and helped lead the offense to three consecutive top-fi ve fi nishes.

RB Steve Slaton (2008 3rd round, 89th pick)Slaton set a team record as a rookie with 1,288 yards rushing

and led the AFC in total yards from scrimmage with 1,659.

DE Connor Barwin (2009 2nd round, 46th pick)Barwin tied for second on the team in sacks as a rookie with

4.5 and was poised to have a breakout season in 2010 before an ankle injury in the season opener left him on injured reserve.

BEYOND THE FIRST

The only position that Houston has addressed in all nine of its drafts is linebacker. The Texans have taken one in all of their drafts, except for the 2004 draft, when they took three lineback-ers. All totaled, the Texans have drafted 11 linebackers, more than any other position.

Houston has drafted a pair of linebackers who went on to win AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in DeMeco Ryans (33rd overall, 2006) and Brian Cushing (15th overall, 2009).
