At Leeds Trinity we like to combine both study and professional work-based placements to give our students the best chance of getting a job when they graduate. This is why all of our degrees include periods of professional work placements.

Andy Morgan graduated from Leeds Trinity University College in 2009 with an Upper Second class degree in Sports Journalism. As part of his course he landed a placement at the press office for Wakefield Wild Cats rugby club. He said: “The work placement module has played a big part in helping me get to where I am today. It is constantly hammered into you throughout the three years that the most crucial part of getting into Journalism is contacts.” “Whilst I picked up a few contacts outside of my placement period, the contacts and the relationships I built up in that six week period ultimately resulted in me getting the two jobs I’ve had since graduation. It really was invaluable.” The professional placements on offer to students are set up by the Employer Partnership Scheme here at Leeds Trinity. Employment Partnership Officer, Lynn Johnson, is responsible for the arrangement of Media, Film and Journalism placements.

She said: “To be a serious contender for your first vocational job after graduation, it’s vital that you have as much hands on experience in that area as possible. When it comes to recruiting for a job, some employers will overlook qualifications and instead, choose to appoint the candidate with the most work experience under their belt, as it demonstrates their enthusiasm and commitment to succeed in that field.” “Carrying out a work placement at the same time as studying for a degree enables students to utilise the skills they have acquired on their course to date, as well as gain a real insight into their desired future career.”

GREAT PLACEMENTS

GREAT VOLUNTEERING

Compelling evidence shows that graduates who have previously taken part in volunteer work stand a better chance of gaining employment. A recent survey carried out by TimeBank through Reed Executive showed that among 200 of the UK’s leading businesses, 73% of employers would employ a candidate with volunteering experience over one without.

Our Volunteering Coordinator, Vics Leeson said “Our mission is to work collaboratively with local, regional and national organisations enabling both Leeds Trinity students and staff to participate as active citizens for the mutual benefit of individuals, the institution and the community.”

Tony Aubrey has just completed his second year of the Sport, Health, Exercise and Nutrition degree and for one of the modules he was required to complete a volunteer placement.

“I managed to land a placement with Leeds Rhinos rugby club. After three weeks of volunteer work there, I was offered a paid part-time job with them. I organise teams for touch rugby, getting people to come to our events. I also coach kids and spend a lot of time as a referee for matches. The placement has also given me the opportunity to work with the nutritionist to learn about strengthening and conditioning. I always wanted to go into PE teaching, but through this placement I’ve realised I now want to work with professional athletes. I couldn’t have done it without the help of Leeds Trinity.”

Second year Nutrition and Food student Carly Cox has been volunteering at Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food centre at Kirkgate Market, Leeds. Carly said,

“The benefits of volunteering are great. I’ve been working as part of a small team and learnt things that you wouldn’t necessarily get taught at university. It’s helped build my life skills, working with a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures.”

Leeds Trinity is also able to support you if you’re interested in setting up your own business like Andrew and James did.

Andrew Claypole and James Robinson, who graduated this year with degrees in Media, have turned their dreams of running a business into reality. Andrew said, “We first became friends after working together for three years on a number of modules and projects as part of our degrees. After receiving great marks for our production work and amazing feedback from the lecturers, we realised that we could do this at a professional level.” In the current recession, entrepreneurs can often thrive as they are able to offer value in tough economic times. Leeds Trinity University College offers support and funding to any graduates who have an initial business idea. James said, “Leeds Trinity initially helped us by providing us with a bursary for marketing, known as the proof of concept fund. As part of the business masterclass, we had to pitch our business idea and then create a business plan to prove we were serious about our idea.”

Andrew and James both have high hopes for JDT Media, which is a graphic design company offering services including logo design, corporate identity, web building and animation. “We have been given office space on campus for the year to work from and hopefully this will carry on for years to come where students can use the room to help start their business.”

“Currently we are producing the new student union website for Leeds Trinity. Other projects we have worked on include designs for Hovis, Oxford United and Ryan Air.” Enterprise Officer at Leeds Trinity, Phil Williams, said, “In the current recession, more and more graduates are interested in starting their own business. We run an annual master class programme to help our graduates to develop their ideas.” “Following the course, they are supported by business mentoring and there is also access to proof of concept funding. This allows them to test their business ideas.”

GRADUATE TEACHERS GIVE LEEDS TRINITY TOP MARKS FOR TRAINING

Alexandra Moon graduated from Leeds Trinity in 2009 with a degree in Primary Education, and now teaches a reception class at Margaret McMillan Primary School in Bradford.

Alexandra said, “The course was fantastic andprepared me for the big wide world of teaching. I have been commended on a lot of my professional values and interactive activities for the children.”

Leeds Trinity University College once again achieved excellent results in the national survey of newly qualified teachers (NQTs).

The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) conducts an annual survey of NQTs to gauge their views on the quality of their initial teacher training and how well it prepared them for their first year in teaching. The survey poses 27 questions to NQTs, starting with three key criteria on the overall quality of training, of assessment and feedback, and of support and guidance. For all three of these crucial criteria Leeds Trinity is the most highly rated institution in Yorkshire and the north east, with an excellent second place nationally. 98% of respondents said the overall quality of their training at Leeds Trinity was good or very good.

Sarah Trussler, Head of Primary Education at Leeds Trinity, said, “These scores mirror the perceptions of employers who strongly advocate the training received here. Our employability remains high at 93%, with a further 6% unwell or travelling, so we are maintaining our high standards as recognised by Ofsted earlier in the year.”

GREAT CHOICE Making a decision about where and what to study isn’t always easy.

First and foremost it’s about finding a degree subject that interests you enough to study it for three years (or more). Leeds Trinity regularly reviews its courses and also updates the subjects studied within each course so you’ll get a good mix of contemporary and traditional topics.

We recently developed new courses in Humanities, Nutrition and Food, and Television.

All of our degrees include practical work as well as theory and all our courses have periods of work experience that form an integral part of your studies.

GREAT CAMPUSWe have spent the past year transforming our campus into a modern, vibrant, campus village.

All Saints Court, our fabulous new halls of residence, has been completed and the first occupants have moved in. The 198 self-catered bedrooms are in flats of 6 with en-suite facilities and communal kitchen / dining / living space.

The new landscaped area outside All Saints Court links to our dining room which has been refurbished with an outdoor seating area, a new café and lounge with soft seating, computers and a plasma TV.

We also have a wonderful new glass atrium reception area complete with the new atrium café.

My love for media stems from the fact that it has become immensely powerful in influencing audiences in modern society. The range of media technologies available has grown so much there isn’t an audience in the world that cannot be reached.

Choosing Leeds Trinity University College was not a harddecision to make for me. From the moment I saw the campus I knew it was the place where I wanted to study my media degree. The small environment means that it has a brilliant community spirit and made it so easy to make friends!

Not to mention that the facilities are excellent, especially for media with the TV studio, gallery and editing suite.

What more could I ask for? Plus, since I began my course, the lecturers have been especially helpful in ensuring I am coping and understanding the work well. I can’t fault it so far!
