As president of the Home Builders Association of Louisville I’d like to present to you Homearama 2011 at Norton Commons. We are thrilled that you are here to experience a Homearama event un-like any before it. This year’s event is a showcase of 21 unique homes in Louisville. You’ll find that these homes are filled with hi-tech amenities to match our “plugged-in” lifestyles, floor plans with great attention paid to making the most of each space, and outdoor features that offer privacy and an oasis for relaxation and fun despite the smaller lot sizes. The Norton Commons neighborhood of-
fers residents a walkable community filled with restaurants, shops, daily services, parks, and social gathering places. With this Traditional Neighbor-hood Design and the unique home styles, “there’s nothing common about Homearama 2011 at Norton Commons!”
I would like to thank our generous sponsors of Homearama 2011 at Nor-ton Commons. Our presenting sponsors LG&E and Goldberg Simpson, as well as our official sponsors Republic Bank and Window World of Lou-isville. I must also recognize the builders, designers, subcontractors, and Norton Commons for their hard work, dedication and vision to create this spectacular showcase this year.
On behalf of the Home Builders Association of Louisville, I welcome you to Homearama 2011 at Norton Commons.
Sincerely,
Billy DoelkerPresidentHome Builders Association of Louisville
Welcome to Homearama 2011 at Norton Com-mons. We are very excited to offer to you the larg-est showcase of Homearama homes on one site in the 44 year history of the event this year. These 21 distinct homes have been carefully designed and built by 23 of our Registered Builder and Associate Builder/Remodeler members of the Home Builders Association of Louisville. The homes are diverse and represent architectural styling reminiscent of pre-1925 Louisville neighborhoods, but are filled with the modern amenities and products that you expect in a new home of the 21st Century. As much
a part of the Homearama experience this year is the neighborhood in which these homes are located. Norton Commons is a Traditional Neighborhood Design which follows the new urbanism movement. It’s a walkable neighbor-hood featuring parks, shops, restaurants, and schools right at the front door of residents. One unique feature of this year’s site is the proximity of these homes to the downtown section of the neighborhood and the Oval Park, which is filled with open green space and walking trails. These are docu-mented amenities that are desirable to buyers today – just as much as the interior features of homes. We invite you to stroll through the neighborhood and parks to enjoy the amenities while you are here to visit the Homearama site. We think you’ll agree with us when we say, “There’s nothing common about it,” when referring to Homearama 2011 at Norton Commons. I hope you enjoy this year’s show and we look forward to seeing you next year for Homearama 2012.
Sincerely,
Charles J. KavanaughExecutive Vice PresidentHome Builders Association of Louisville

About Norton CommonsNorton Commons makes its Homearama debut with plenty of rea-sons why sense of place is important to Louisville residents. The development emphasizes the value of "more life per square foot" to people in search for a community in which to live, work and play. In Norton Commons, the neighborhood is interconnected with sidewalks and parks, allowing residents the convenience of not hav-ing to get into their cars to grab a cup of coffee with a friend, a dinner with their sweetheart or summer evening gelato run with the kids. With an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and growing businesses and the beauty of tree-lined streets and fountains, Norton Commons is unlike any other development in Louisville. Norton Commons introduces its newest selection of homes along Meeting Street in Homearama 2011, just as it unveils some incred-ible streetscape amenities that add to its beauty and nostalgic charm. Hundreds of trees and plantings and a grand fountain have recently been added. Classic architectural styles are at the heart of Norton Commons. Designs that have withstood the test of time are the standard here, including Foursquare Arts & Crafts, Italianate Cottage and Classi-cal Vernacular to Federal Classical, Greek Revival Classical and Spice Styles. While Norton Commons takes advantage of the social atmosphere it promotes, it doesn't neglect the solemn splendor of its surround-ings. Pocket parks, pools and walking trails offer great incentives for residents to stay active and enjoy nature. A dog park even keeps Fido active. In Heritage Park, neighbors can gather in the craftsman-styled pavilion building to enjoy conversations around the fire pit or com-munity concerts and activities. Between farmer's markets, movie nights on the lawn, sunset parties, firework displays and wine tastings, residents can share traditions-in-the-making. Norton Commons is designed as a place to get away from it all, without having to go far from home where residents can enjoy more life per square foot. For more information about Norton Commons, visit nortoncom-mons.com or call (502) 412-5085.

Checklist for Hiring a Registered Builder or Registered RemodelorIt’s also important that you become familiar with the business of a prospec-
tive remodeler or builder and that his or her experience relates to your indi-
vidual project. You might find it helpful to use this checklist when choosing a
Registered Remodelor or Builder member of the Home Builders Association
of Louisville.
q Check to be sure that you’re talking to a Registered Remodelor or Builder.
q Check to be sure the remodelor or builder has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.
q Ask how long they have been in the remodeling or building business. You want to be sure they’ll be around after the project is complete to service warranties and to address issues that could develop. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business.
q Check with the Better Business Bureau to learn of any complaints.
q Inquire whether the remodeler or builder has sufficient workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction- or remodeling-related accidents on your premises. It’s a good idea to ask for proof of insurance.
q Check references.
q Check for quality of workmanship and materials of previous projects.
q Be sure you are able to easily communicate with the person.
q Ask for a complete and clearly written contract. Review it carefully.
q Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the remodelor or builder is unable to pay for materials and labor as the project proceeds, there could be potential problems.
q Look for these logos:
q Visit hbal.com for lists of Registered Remodelors and Builders.
When considering building a new home or remodeling an existing home, it’s critical to select the right individual or company for your individual proj-ect. It is a decision that will help determine the quality and cost of your re-model or new construction. The Home Builders Association of Louisville (HBAL) has Registered Remodelor and Registered Builder members who:
• Are informed about new products.
• Are linked to a network of industry professionals on the local, state and national level.
• Have a commitment to continuing education.
• Have the ability to address special building issues/techniques.
• Have access to a conciliation process should problems arise that cannot be easily resolved.
• Have experience in the home or commercial construction profession for a specified period of time.
• Have demonstrated financial and on-site responsibilities.
• Are a full-time professional who derives his or her principal income from construction, remodeling or related real estate activities.
• Have submitted the names of previous customers as references
• Have Registered Remodeler or Builder sponsors with personal knowledge of their remodeling/construction activities and business integrity.
• Must have acceptable credit history.
• Appear before a committee of Registered Builders for a personal interview.
• Must agree to take part in continuing education.
• Must agree to abide by the Code of Ethics of the HBAL.

Addie’s playhouseHomearama has always been about dream homes, but this year’s event will showcase the ultimate dream playhouse of a little five-year-old girl. Built around her needs and unique style, the playhouse will highlight the philanthropic efforts of the Building Industry Chari-table Foundation (BICF) and its partnership with Kosair Charities and YouthBuild Louisville. BICF oversaw the building of a playhouse that will most certainly add a heartwarming element to Homearama 2011. This is the first public project of BICF. Kosair Charities selected the playhouse re-cipient earlier this spring and provided the funding available to pur-chase building supplies. BICF enlisted the help of YouthBuild Louis-ville to construct the home under guidance of HBAL Vice President Rob Eberenz, Jr.. Designer Liz Wilson, Liz at Home, offered her expertise in designing the playhouse and worked closely with the girl and her parents on decorating it.
“I think what this does is gain awareness of HBAL as a charitable organization while also helping a child in need. At the same time, it’s a great
example of kids helping kids.”- Davis Boland
The 8 x 12 foot structure includes a reading space, kitchen and lounging area to watch TV. Although the young playhouse owner was involved in specific aspects of the design, she won’t see the final product until it’s unveiled at Homearama. The playhouse will be on display for the duration of Homearama. Eberenz commented on the project. “This has been a fantastic op-portunity for HBAL to partner with YouthBuild Louisville in a new way. There are approximately 20-30 young men involved in Youth-
Build Louisville. Our goal for this particular project is to really focus on the mentoring. At each stage of the building process, we’re intro-ducing them to people with expertise in different aspects of building. When it’s time to do the electric, we’ll bring in an electrician who can give them some input on what it takes to become an electrician. So, we’re not just showing them how to build, but we’re mentoring them and providing encouragement along the way as well,” he explained. BICF Chair Davis Boland commented on the project. “I think what this does is gain awareness of HBAL as a charitable organization while also helping a child in need. At the same time, it’s a great example of kids helping kids. The students in YouthBuild Louisville will more than likely be excited about being part of a project that benefits a child. In addition, it helps promote home building to the next generation of builders, who have the potential to someday be in a position to help oth-ers. I think everyone benefits in the long run. And, we’re very thankful to have Kosair Charities involved in this project,” he said. “Kosair has been very helpful to us as a foundation by offering us advice. Through their example, we’ve realized the importance of establishing a financial base so that we can do more good in the community. If you are a good steward of the funds you raise, you’re better able to help more people in the long run,” Boland added.
BICF is an official 501c3 organization coordinated through HBAL that allows participants to contribute to area worthy causes. For more infor-mation about BICF, visit hbal.com.

Life AroundNorton Commons is like no other place to live, work and play. The homes of Norton Commons reflect Classic architectural styles reminiscent of pre-1925 Louisville neighborhoods. Each home is exquisitely designed with individu-ality and unique character. But fabulous homes are only part of the unique story of Norton Commons. It’s where neighbors enjoy front porch conversations and gather with family and friends in the 160 acres of homes, parks, gardens, trails, civic spaces and plazas. It’s where the best of an old-fashioned, small town lifestyle melds with the conveniences and services of a mixed-use community. It’s where village living comes alive. The natural beauty of indigenous trees and gorgeous flowers unfolds around every corner of Norton Commons. As nature flourishes, outdoor architectural elements, and recreational spaces engage and delight. At the beginning of the Neighborhood Art & Park Trail is the formal Rose Garden, highlighted by the Roman Minimus Fountain in the center. Triangle Park fea-tures an art garden and a bocce ball court. The Norton Commons Fountain, adorned with lions heads spouting water, the figures of the Three Graces of Greek mythology, and the goddess of Eternal youth, is the picture perfect fo-cal point for Meeting Street Park. Heritage Park has a dog park, a pavilion for neighborhood activities and a children’s playground. Summer fun wouldn’t be complete without swimming and lounging around the pool. Join the swim team, participate in water aerobics, or just splash around at Norton Commons’ Jimson Pool.

Norton Commons defines the concept of community health care. An array of health care is available within walking distance of homes, making it easy and convenient to access a variety of health care services for the entire family. Cassis Dermatology and Aesthetics, Smiles on Meeting Street, Jing Acupuncture, Advanced Dermatolo-gy & Dermaesthetics of Louisville, Kidzlife Pediatrics, Town Family Doctor, and Commons Community Pharmacy all share the goal of providing personalized, friendly healthcare in a true neighborhood environment. Located only minutes away from Norton Commons are two of Louisville’s premier hospitals. Norton Brownsboro Hospital is a full service hospital that offers a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic, orthopaedic and spine, cardiovascular and pulmonary, intensive care, women’s, surgical, and endoscopy services. It also features a 24/7 emergency department, and physical/speech/occu-pational therapy. The hospital’s open, airy design, earth-tone color scheme, and numerous windows overlooking hospital gardens, in-cluding large rooftop meditation gardens, are designed to promote a healing environment. 4960 Norton Healthcare Blvd, 502-446-8000. Kosair Children’s Medical Center-Brownsboro includes a 24/7 pediatric emergency department. Via telemedicine technology, Emergency Department physicians can consult with pediatric sub-specialists at Kosair Children’s Hospital to determine, for example, whether a patient needs to be admitted to Kosair Children’s down-town. The center includes a pediatric diagnostic imaging area featur-ing MRI, CT, S-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and cardiology services, along with a full service laboratory. The facility’s outpatient surgery center offers a wide range of procedures, including ENT, orthopae-dics, eye, urinary, dental and general surgeries. 4910 Chamberlain Lane, 502-446-5000. Additional medical specialties are available at Norton Medical Plaza at Old Brownsboro Crossing. Norton Medical Associates, Norton Immediate Care Center, Norton Diagnostic Center, Norton Sleep Center, Louisville Oncology, and Health and Vascular Screen-ing are all provided in an outpatient setting. 4950 Norton Healthcare Blvd., 502-629-1234.
The Jefferson County Public School system has an option agreement with Norton Commons for an elementary school site on land to be donated by Norton Commons. The JCPS Board of Education will need to take action to fund the school in order for it to be built. The proposed school has been included in the Board of Education’s facili-ties plan that is required by the state of Kentucky. It is anticipated that no new schools will be approved by the Board of Education until the new student assignment plan is approved. JCPS and the YMCA have been considering a joint use of the site that could be advantageous to both organizations. The joint use would offer unique opportunities for health, education and exercise for both organizations. Saint Mary Academy, a school that serves preschool through eighth grade students, is a regionalization of Saint Bernadette/Mother of Good Counsel in Louisville and Immaculate Conception Parish School in LaGrange, Kentucky. The mission of the academy is to educate stu-dents spiritually, academically, emotionally and socially. Differentiated learning styles in classrooms enable each student to learn. Through a curriculum rooted in the teachings of the Roman Catholic faith, stu-dents are educated in a manner which fosters academic excellence.
Bornstein is proud of its many Norton Commons projects including the most recent South Village Market & Norton Commons Fountain.

Bike, walk or drive around Norton Commons and you’ll find shops that offer a treasure trove of surprises. Shop-ping is always an adventure at Complements, Ladybug, the Pet Station Salon and Boutique, Ribbons & Rags Clothing Boutique, Saratoga Accessories & Design, The Sewing Shop, Something Blue, South Village Market, Subtleties Fragrance & Accessories, and The Uncommon Art Shop. There are also many stores at The Summit (Springdale and Brownsboro Road, KY22) from which to fill your shop-ping bags with clothes, furniture, home accessories, cosmet-ics and…well, just about anything and everything you can imagine. The person who coined the phrase “shop ‘til you drop” may have visited The Summit’s stores such as Ann Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch, Jos. A Bank, Chico’s, Banana Republic, J. Crew. Talbots, Clay & Cotton, Habitation, Pier 1 Imports and Barnes & Noble. Those retailers were just the beginning. There are even more stores and shopping experi-ences waiting for you! A trip to Costco, in Old Brownsboro Crossing (Highway 22 at I-265 and I-71) may be just what you need if you’re looking for appliances, food, furniture, china, clothing, or most anything for yourself or your home.
Whether you’re in the mood for a snack or treat, or are have an appetite for something a bit heartier, you’ll have some delicious choices. Residents of and visitors to Norton Commons rave about Car-men’s Cupcakes, Gelato Gilberto, Johnny’s Brus-co’s NY Pizzeria, Karem’s Grill & Pub, and Tea Station Chinese Bistro and Verbena Café. With those tasty eateries, it might be awhile before you want to venture out of Norton Com-mons to dine. But when you do, you’ll have plenty of choices. Conveniently located in Brownsboro Crossing are Olive Garden, Chili’s and LongHorn Steakhouse. Or, it’s only a few minutes to The Summit where you’re sure to please your palate at Martini Italian Bistro, Mitchell’s Fish Market, or Stoney River Legendary Steaks. Or why not let the folks at Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Qdoba Mexi-can Grill or zoe’s Kitchen offer up their yummy fare in a casual setting.
