CATS CRUISE PAST PORTLANDDarius Miller scored 19 points as No. 2 Kentucky

routed Portland, 87-63, on Nov. 26 in the Wildcats’final tuneup before playing St. John’s and No. 1North Carolina this week.

Terrence Jones also scored 19 points and AnthonyDavis added 13 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, but Miller started 37-of-38 games last year and hissenior presence has steadied a team filled with soph-omores and freshmen.

Kentucky has won every game by double digits, but Portland gave the Wildcats plenty to work on inthe coming days after the Pilots challenged themwith sharp outside shooting and won the reboundingbattle, 39-38.

Kentucky used an 18-3 first-half run to take adouble-digit lead. After Portland pulled within six inthe second half, the Wildcats put on a full-court pressas part of an 18-4 run that put the game out of reach.

Nemanja Mitrovic went 6-of-12 from 3-pointrange and finished with 20 points for the Pilots.

UK head coach John Calipari said last week hewanted the Wildcats to play more fluid without himhaving to call plays from the sideline before thisweek’s tough games. Kentucky responded with itsmost efficient game so far, committing just fourturnovers, its fewest since committing just two in awin against Utah in the second round of the 1993NCAA tournament.

CALIPARI BREAKS RECORD IN RUPPWith UK’s season-opening victory over Marist,

Calipari recorded his 34th straight win in Rupp Arenaas UK’s head coach. It broke former UK head coachRick Pitino’s longest streak of 33 games in the venue.

His winning streak currently sits at 36.

CHAMPIONSKentucky captured its second in-season tourna-

ment championship in three years, defeating PennState (85-47) and Old Dominion (62-52) en route tothe 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-OffTournament title.

Doron Lamb led UK offensively in two games, aver-aging 17.0 points in the tournament. The Kentuckydefense flexed its defensive muscle holding opponentsto just 29.3 percent from the field while posting arebounding margin of plus-16 and blocking 17 shots.

IN-SEASON TOURNAMENT SUCCESSSince Calipari came to Kentucky in 2009, the

Wildcats have had great success in their “in-seasontournaments.” In 2009, the Wildcats claimed theCancun Classic Championship and last season, UKadvanced to the finals of the Maui Invitational, before falling to UConn. This season the Cats werecrowned champions of the 2011 Basketball Hall ofFame Tip-Off Tournament.

hird-year Kentucky head coach JohnCalipari kept the momentum going in hissecond year at the helm of the Wildcats, guiding Kentucky to its 14th Final Four.In doing so, he became only the second

coach to lead three different schools to a Final Four(UMass-1996; Memphis-2008; Kentucky-2011).

In a season that was labeled as a “rebuildingeffort” where Calipari and the Cats were supposed tostruggle after losing an unprecedented five first-round picks in the 2010 NBA Draft, Kentuckyinstead reloaded as Calipari guided UK to its 27thSEC tournament championship, kept his unbeatenrecord at Rupp Arena (33-0, tied for the longestsuch streak in Rupp Arena history) alive and collect-ed his 500th career on-court win.

Upon being named head coach on April 1, 2009,Calipari continued to work his magic of resurrectingonce proud programs, taking an NIT team in 2009to the 2010 NCAA Elite Eight. Along the way heled the Wildcats to a No. 1 ranking (UK’s first since2003), the program’s 44th SEC championship and26th SEC tournament title.

The honors continued after the season as Caliparibecame the first coach in UK history to receive theAdolph Rupp National Coach of the Year award. Hethen watched as five of his players were selected inthe first round of the 2010 NBA Draft, the first time

a school has produced five first round picks. Amongthose picks was the first Wildcat taken as the No. 1overall pick, John Wall.

In his inaugural season as head coach of theWildcats, Calipari posted his fifth straight 30-winseason, the only coach in NCAA Division I historyto do so. In addition to the Rupp National Coach ofthe Year, Calipari was also named the AssociatedPress SEC Coach of the Year.

When he led Kentucky back to the No. 1 spot inthe country, Calipari became one of only two coach-es (Frank McGuire) in NCAA history to lead threeteams to a No. 1 ranking. He led UMass to a No. 1ranking in 1995 and 1996 and he led Memphis tothe No. 1 spot in the 2008 season.

Much like he did at UMass, when his playersgraduated at nearly 80 percent, Calipari has stressedacademics. Fifteen of his last 18 seniors that camethrough the Memphis program have earned theirbachelor’s degrees and the four seniors under Cal atKentucky have all earned their degrees.

The Wildcats posted a 3.14 grade point average(GPA) in the 2011 spring semester, the highestsemester GPA in recent years, and an overall 3.015GPA for the 2010-11 season.

Since the 2005-06 season, Coach Cal ranks as thewinningest coach over the last six years.

After bringing the University of Massachusetts

basketball program to national prominence in the’90s and resurrecting the Memphis basketball pro-gram in the 2000s, Calipari became the 22nd coachin UK history, and is the seventh in the last 80 years.

Following his second season at UK, Calipari’soverall on-court record soared to 509-152 for animpressive .770 winning percentage. His 509 winsare the second-most in NCAA Division I history inthe first 19 years, Roy Williams being the other.

Calipari’s 77.0 winning percentage is the third-highest among active NCAA Division I coaches with10 years experience at college basketball’s Division Ilevel, trailing only Mark Few and Roy Williams. Onthe NCAA Division I list for winning percentage forall coaches (minimum 10 years), Calipari is in 10thplace and ahead of Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim,Bob Huggins and Lute Olson.

With his five 30-win seasons, Calipari has sevenfor his career, which is fourth most for a head coachin NCAA Division I history. For his career (19years), Calipari has 17 20-win seasons and 11 25-win campaigns.

In 1996, Calipari moved from UMass to theNBA after leading the Minutemen to the Final Four. For his efforts, Calipari was named NaismithNational Coach of the Year.

Calipari led the Tigers to the 2008 NCAA titlegame, and Memphis’ 38 wins in 2007-08 made himthe winningest coach for a single season in NCAAhistory. As a result, Calipari was named NaismithNational Coach of the Year for a second time in hiscareer. He is only the second coach to receive thehonor multiple times since the award’s inception in1987. Duke’s Krzyzewski is the other to do so.

Calipari, the 2009 Sports Illustrated NationalCoach of the Year, led the Tigers to nine straight 20-win campaigns and nine consecutive postseasonappearances, the only Memphis coach to do that. Heposted 252 wins — 28 wins per season — as theTigers’ head coach, making him the winningestcoach in school history.

Calipari compiled a 193-71 record (.731) duringhis eight-year career at Massachusetts, including a108-44 mark (.684) in Atlantic 10 play. In additionto five straight NCAA tournaments, UMass alsomade two appearances in the NIT, advancing to theNIT final four in 1991. The 1990-91 season was thefirst of six straight seasons in which the Minutemenwon at least 20 games.

Calipari’s personal 20-win streak has reached the 17-season mark after 35 wins in his first year at UK and29 in his second. All nine of his Memphis clubs won20-plus games, along with his last six teams at UMass.

In his final season at UMass, Calipari was namedthe 1996 Naismith National Coach of the Year andThe Sporting News National Coach of the Year. Hewas also named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year forthe third time in four years, as well as BasketballTimes East Region Coach of the Year.

During the Minutemen’s 35-2 season in 1995-96,UMass posted wins over Kentucky, Maryland, WakeForest, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Virginia Tech andLouisville. UMass ended the regular season rankedNo. 1 in the nation in the final regular season pollafter being the top-ranked team for nine weeks earli-er in the year. The Minutemen also won their first 26games of the season, setting a school record for mostconsecutive wins. In addition to his national coach ofthe year honors in 1996, Calipari was a NaismithCoach of the Year finalist in 1994 and 1995.

The 52-year-old lettered two years at NorthCarolina-Wilmington before transferring to ClarionState. He played point guard at Clarion during the1981 and 1982 seasons, leading the team in assistsand free-throw percentage.

The Eagles were ranked in the Division II top 20both years and participated in the 1981 NCAADivision II Tournament.

Calipari and his wife, Ellen, have two daughters,Erin and Megan and a son, Bradley. Erin graduatedfrom UMass and is now in graduate school at WakeForest, while Megan is pursuing her undergraduatedegree at UMass. Brad is a freshman at LexingtonChristian Academy.

When he joined the Memphis staff in 2008, the Tigers were the winningestprogram over a three-year span in NCAA Division I history, recording 104 vic-tories from 2005-08.

So what did Antigua do? He helped coach the Tigers to a 33-4 record and aspot in the 2009 NCAA Sweet 16. For the fourth straight season, the Tigerstook the regular season and tournament titles, going undefeated in C-USAthree of the four years.

Prior to his brief stay in Memphis, Antigua worked at his alma mater,Pittsburgh. During his five years at Pitt, he helped lead the Panthers to an over-all record of 132-40 (.767 winning percentage) and a Big East Conferencemark of 55-27 (.670 winning percentage). Pittsburgh recorded five straight 20-win campaigns and won 10 or more league games five consecutive years.

Fluent in Spanish, Antigua and his wife, Dana, have two children; a son,Orlando Anthony, and a daughter, Olivia.

ayne begins his second year with John Calipari and Kentucky men’sbasketball as an assistant coach after spending six seasons as an assis-tant at Oregon.

Payne’s work with forward Josh Harrellson last season was one of thebiggest reasons behind Kentucky’s historic run. In addition to Harrellson’s con-ditioning program, Payne helped Harrellson develop an interior game that ledto a significant increase in playing time. Harrellson’s transformation was widelyregarded as one of the national stories of the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Nationally recognized as one of the game’s top recruiters, Payne’s ability torecruit has continued to flourish at Kentucky. He played a key part in JohnCalipari’s 2011 recruiting class, the school’s third consecutive top-ranked class. Allfour of UK’s freshmen are ranked in the top 25 of most major recruiting services.

A four-year letterwinner at Louisville from 1985-89, Payne joined theCardinals from Northeast Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., where he was aPARADE All-American and the state’s player of the year.

Payne helped lead Louisville to the 1986 NCAA national championship asa sophomore. As a senior, Payne averaged 14.5 points and 5.7 rebounds andwas named second-team All-Metro Conference. By the end of his Louisvillecareer, Payne registered 1,083 points and shot 40 percent from 3-point range.

Payne earned a bachelor’s of science in sport administration from Louisvillein 2003. He and his wife, Michelle, have two children, Alexis and Alexander.

JOHN ROBICDenison, ’86

obic is in his third season with the Kentucky basketball program butis a long-time associate of UK head coach John Calipari.

Beginning with their first season together at UMass in 1988-89,where Robic was an assistant under Calipari, the two are entering

their 15th season together. It seems as if the Calipari-Robic duo is a provencombination for thrilling basketball seasons.

Similar to those magical years he assisted in at UMass in the 1990s, Robichelped lead Memphis to the program’s most storied era in school history in fourseasons (2006-09) as well as helping return Kentucky back among the nation’s elite.

Robic helped the Wildcats post a 35-3 mark in his inaugural season atKentucky. The Cats made an appearance in the 2010 Elite Eight while claim-ing SEC regular-season and tournament championships along the way.

He helped UK make history with five Wildcats drafted in the first round ofthe 2010 NBA Draft. In 2011, Kentucky returned to the Final Four for thefirst time since 1998. Four more players were taken in the 2011 NBA Draftunder the watch of the Calipari-Robic combination.

A graduate of North Hills High School in Pittsburgh, Robic attendedDenison University in Granville, Ohio, where he earned his bachelor of arts inspeech communication and physical education in 1986.

Robic and his wife, Heidi, have three daughters, Hayley, Alli and Sophie.

BLUE AND WHITEThe University of Kentucky adopted blue and

white as its official colors in 1892. UK students hadfirst decided on blue and light yellow before theKentucky-Centre football game Dec. 19, 1891. Theyellow was soon dropped from the combination andreplaced by white.

The particular Kentucky shade of blue, close toroyal blue, was determined without ceremony. Aftersettling on the base colors, a student posed the logi-cal question, “What color blue?” Letterman RichardStoll looked down at his necktie and raised it to theair. The vote was unanimous.

WILDCATS NICKNAMEThe official nickname for the University of

Kentucky’s athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The nicknamebecame synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 foot-ball victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909, on the road.

Commandant Carbusier, then head of the militarydepartment at old State University (UK), told a groupof students in a chapel service following the game thatthe Kentucky football team had “fought like wildcats.”

Later the name Wildcats became more and morepopular among UK followers as well as with membersof the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted bythe University.

LIVE MASCOTIn 2000, the University of Kentucky, in coopera-

tion with the Kentucky Department of Fish andWildlife, adopted a 3-year-old male bobcat to serve asthe Wildcats’ “official” mascot.

The wildcat has a permanent residence on displayat a game farm just west of the state capitol inFrankfort, Ky. UK Athletics sponsored a name-the-wildcat Internet contest and the final three possibili-ties were Tucky, Blue and Champ, with Blue earningthe final nod after nearly 50,000 votes were cast.

Through the years, UK has had other official livemascots with colorful names. Records indicate thatthe first wild animal was given to the University in1921. Named “Tom,” this live Kentucky wildcat diedquickly in captivity and was replaced by “TNT.”Other live mascots followed, including “Whiskers,”“Hot Tamale” and “Colonel,” only to pass on due toold age or be turned loose in the mountains after theyfailed to thrive in captivity.

The current cat was born in captivity and donated

by the Woods and Wetlands of Cadiz, Ky. His lifeexpectancy is 15-25 years.

UK DANCE TEAMThe University of Kentucky Dance Team helps

generate excitement and enthusiasm at Wildcat athlet-ics events. Under the tutelage of Dawn DuncanWalters and assistant coach Andrea Masters, the 2010-11 dance team has 38 members, including Blue andWhite squads. The team won its first national champi-onship at the 2005 national competition sponsored bythe United Spirit Association. It backed that up with asecond-place finish in 2006 and took home third at the2007 championships. The 2010 squad placed fifth inthe Pom Division at UDA 2010 Nationals.

FAN-tastic!The Kentucky cheerleaders, band and dance team

combine to entertain the nation’s largest and most loyalfan base in college basketball. Sure, Ashley Judd,Tommy Lasorda, Muhammad Ali and Backstreet BoyKevin Richardson steal the attention, but those Big Bluestars are just a few of the Cat fans in attendance at UKgames. It’s each and every one of the many Kentuckyfans who deserve the credit for helping the Wildcats leadthe nation in attendance 22 times since Rupp Arenaopened in 1976-77, including 14 of the last 15 years.

And the tremendous fan base is not limited to justLexington. Each year, Kentucky fans flock to FreedomHall in Louisville, to fill the arena with more than20,000 fans for an annual “home” game.

The Southeastern Conference Tournament? Well,it might as well be called the Kentucky Invitational.March Madness? Nearly the same result.

The nation’s largest media contingent follows theCats from start to finish simply because of the fans’incessant appetite for information on their Wildcats.

TRADEMARK SWOOSHOnly the best wear Nike. Kentucky not only wears Nike, but is under an

all-school contract with the athletic apparel company. In 1997, UK signed the contract with the popularmakers of the trademark swoosh. Thanks to Nike’sextensive research and product development, UK stu-dent-athletes stay on the cutting edge of quality andstyle with all of their gear.

All 22 sports use Nike shoes and equipment, andover the course of the contract, the Wildcats will

receive millions of dollars worth of clothing, equip-ment and cash. The men’s basketball team has beenrecognized by the apparel company as a “Nike Elite”team.

While clothing adorned with “Kentucky” wasalready popular throughout the nation, thanks to Nikeand its international marketing reach, Kentucky’s blueand white can now be found worldwide.

CAWOOD’S COURTPrior to the UK-Louisville game on Dec. 29, 2001,

the court at Rupp Arena was named “Cawood’sCourt” in honor of Cawood Ledford, the beloved“Voice of the Wildcats” for 39 years (1953-92).Ledford passed away in September 2001 after a longbattle with cancer.

The ceremonies included the unveiling of a logocourtside, not far from where Ledford called theaction. Also included in the ceremony were donationsby two area businesses to the Cawood LedfordScholarship Fund, established in 1992 to assist formerstudent-athletes in obtaining their degrees.

THE WILDCAT The Wildcat mascot originated during the 1976-77

academic year at UK. Gary Tanner was the original

Wildcat, dancing and entertaining thousands of UKfans at Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp Arena dur-ing athletics events.

A few years later, he was joined by another Cat —walking on stilts — who made his appearance duringUK’s twin tower era of Melvin Turpin and Sam Bowie.

Today, both the Wildcat and his sidekick, Scratch, attend each football and basketball game, several academic functions, and generally serve as friendlyambassadors for the University.

SCRATCHScratch joined the cheerleading squad in the mid

’90s in conjunction with the UK Kids’ Club, but todayhe has become almost as recognizable as the Wildcat.

The lovable face of UK Athletics recently garnerednational attention after being named to the 2003Capital One Mascot All-America team, an honor heearned again in 2004.

SENIOR DAYSenior Day at Kentucky has become one of the

most celebrated ceremonies in college basketball.Honoring its senior class, UK’s event is one of the mostelaborate and moving programs of its kind. Thepregame ceremony begins with player introductions.Once they have all burst through banners bearing theirlikenesses, their families join them at center court. Then the state song, “My Old Kentucky Home,” issung as the home crowd bids farewell.

UK CHEERLEADERSRooting on the Wildcats every game are the award-

winning UK Cheerleaders.Under the direction of adviser T. Lynn Williamson

and coach Jomo Thompson, the UK Cheerleadershave become the model cheerleading squad in thenation. Since 1985, UK has earned the UniversalCheer Association national championship an impres-sive 18 times. The squad has been runner-up five times.

UK PEP BANDWith more than 100 members, the University of

Kentucky pep band is one of the largest in the nation.Clad in its recognizable blue and white outfits, the pepband is directed by George Boulden. Performing atboth home football and basketball games, the UK pepband has been named by Southern Living as one of the“top 10 bands in the South.”

dolph Rupp is synonymous with win-ning. As coach of Kentucky, he was apioneer in the Wildcats’ fast-breakoffense while becoming the winningestcoach the game had ever seen.

The site that now serves as a tribute to his out-standing coaching accomplishments — Rupp Arena— has become one of the most recognizable gymna-siums in the world while serving as home to collegebasketball’s most storied program.

Now in its 35th season as the KentuckyWildcats’ home court, the facility has seen UK winbetter than 85 percent of its home games since itwas opened in 1976.

In recent years, renovations were completed onRupp Arena — including the lower arena seats beingchanged to blue from their previous rainbow colors. Inaddition, new end-zone seating moved the studentsection closer to the floor in an intimidating, standing-room only arrangement. While the endowment seatsalong courtside continue to entice fans to financiallysupport their Wildcats, a large portion of the mediahave been moved to a “press box” location between thelower and upper seating areas. And finally, nearly 40seats were added to each corner, the first additions inseating in nearly two decades.

The improvements followed changes thatincluded four new video boards, a new playing floorwith a striking new design and enhancements to theconcourses as well. It was all part of a $15 millionupgrade to what many consider the mecca of col-lege basketball.

Since the fall of 1976, the arena in downtownLexington has served as home to three nationalchampionship teams at Kentucky. Four others haveadvanced to the Final Four. Eight seasons have wit-nessed the Cats go unbeaten at home.

It has played host to nearly 520 UK games, countless KHSAA Sweet 16s, a number of NBAexhibitions, 11 NCAA tournaments, three SECtournaments and two Ohio Valley ConferenceTournaments. With so many unforgettablemoments, the old floor still maintained a value tohoop fans across the Bluegrass and beyond. Therefore, officials made pieces of the relic avail-able for public sale, with proceeds going to the UKBasketball Museum, the Kentucky High SchoolAthletic Association and to help offset the cost ofthe new playing floor. Thanks to an auction ofadditional sections, like coaching boxes and lettered end zones, the old floor generated morethan $250,000.

The new portable basketball court, adorned withthe official interlocking UK logo at midcourt, wasdesigned by both UK officials and the LexingtonCenter Corporation. Robbins Inc., in Cincinnaticonstructed it in 2001 at a cost of $125,000. Whenassembled, it lies 118 feet below the ceiling and ismade of a high-grade northern maple. The floor canbe removed and an ice rink can be constructed forice shows or hockey games thanks to a $2.5 millionrenovation during the summer of ’96.

But the playing surface is just one aspect of theimpressive home of the Cats. Situated in downtownLexington, Rupp Arena has played host to several pre-mier basketball events. In March 1985, all roads led toLexington for the NCAA Final Four as Villanovashocked Georgetown in a memorable finale.

In 1986, Rupp played host to both theSoutheastern Conference Tournament and theNCAA Women’s Final Four. On numerous otheroccasions, the arena has served as one stop en routeto the NCAA title game.

An awesome structure in sight and scope, thearena is divided into two seating areas. The lowerlevel features 10,000 cushioned theater seats. Theupper level has 13,000 seats on epoxy-coated metalbleachers. The latter can be visually isolated to pro-vide more natural setting for small shows.

Built by the city of Lexington, the arena is themajor portion of the $53 million Lexington Centercomplex, which includes an expanded convention-

exhibition hall, a 50-store tri-level enclosed shop-ping mall and a Hyatt Regency Hotel.

The Wildcats command an exclusive locker room365 days a year, while other amenities include sixteam-size dressing rooms and eight smaller units.

In January 2001, the arena unveiled four newvideo boards, each 12’6” by 20’ in size and mount-ed in each corner. It allowed the Wildcats to utilizea new “lights out” introduction, featuring a videopresentation and indoor fireworks.

he innovation, creativity, quality teach-ing and service underway at theUniversity of Kentucky touch the lives ofpeople throughout the state, the nation

and the world.UK accomplishes this achievement through

ground-breaking research, community outreach andtechnological advances that contribute to the better-ment of the Commonwealth while also fostering acultural quality of life through our museums, libraries and special events.

Founded in 1865 as a land-grant institution adja-cent to downtown Lexington, UK is nestled in thescenic heart of the beautiful Bluegrass Region ofKentucky. From its early beginnings, with only 190students and 10 professors, UK’s campus now coversmore than 716 acres and is home to 28,000 studentsand 13,500 employees.

UK is one of only seven universities in the U.S.that has programs in agriculture, engineering, medi-cine and pharmacy on a single campus, leading togroundbreaking discoveries and unique interdiscipli-nary collaboration. The state’s flagship universityconsists of 16 academic and professional collegeswhere students can choose from some 200 majorsand degree programs. The colleges are Agriculture,Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics,Communications and Information Studies,Dentistry, Design, Education, Engineering, FineArts, Health Sciences, Law, Medicine, Nursing,Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work.

“The University of Kentucky has a diverse set ofcampus resources centered in Lexington,”President Eli Capilouto said. “Our wide array ofprograms allows us to excel in interdisciplinarystudies and fosters an environment of cooperativeengagement across all colleges, programs andresearch endeavors. We need to leverage ourresource base to move Kentucky forward into aknowledge-based economy. The University ofKentucky, as the Commonwealth’s flagship institu-tion, is called to improve the general welfare of ourcitizenry, and we are uniquely positioned to makethat future a reality for the people of Kentucky.”

The UK Chandler Medical Center was estab-lished in 1957 and is one of the nation’s top academ-ic medical centers. The faculty, students and staff ofour dynamic medical center take pride in achievingexcellence in education, patient care, research andcommunity service. The 791-bed UK ChandlerHospital and Kentucky Children’s Hospital are sup-ported by a growing faculty and staff. UK’s agenda is to accelerate the university’s move-ment toward academic excellence in all areas andgain worldwide recognition for its outstanding aca-demic programs, its commitment to undergradu-ates, its success in building a diverse community andits engagement with the larger society. It’s all part ofthe university’s strategy to help position UK as thestate’s indispensable institution.

itch Barnhart is in his 10th year atthe University of Kentucky, withunparalleled accomplishments in hispast and unprecedented goals for

the future. In the last year alone, UK Athletics’ success fea-

tured the school’s first national championship inrifle; the men’s basketball team returned to theFinal Four for the first time since 1998; softballadvanced to the super regional for the first time;and the football team continued its school-recordfive-year bowl streak.

Combined with other achievements, these featsare fulfilling Barnhart’s ambitious course for thefuture, which was revealed in November 2008 withthe 15 x 15 x 15 Plan. The goals are to win at least15 conference or national championships and rankamong the NCAA’s top 15 athletics programs by2015 — all of which would be unprecedentedachievements for UK Athletics — while continuingto expand the department’s service to the common-wealth of Kentucky. Another goal is a cumulative3.0 grade-point average for UK’s 500-plus student-athletes on an annual basis.

Barnhart’s commitment to the 15 x 15 x 15 Plan, and beyond, was reinforced this year when he signeda contract extension that reaches 2019.

UK’s steady improvement in the Directors’ Cupstandings under Barnhart was highlighted with a29th-place finish in 2009-10. It was the school’s bestshowing since Barnhart’s arrival, its top finish since1997-98 and only three slots away from the bestmark in school history.

The primary academic target was met during the2010 spring semester as UK’s student-athletes notcheda composite 3.04 GPA. but Barnhart wants to contin-ue to see academic success and improvement in thefuture. In addition, UK has consistently posted strongnumbers in the NCAA Academic Progress Rate asevery one of UK’s 22 varsity sports have avoided penal-ties in the APR’s seven-year existence. Graduationrates, which date back to classes that entered six yearsago, are beginning to show the improvement Barnhartemphasized upon his arrival in 2002.

Additional initiatives begun under Barnhart’sleadership include fully funding all 22 varsity sportswith maximum number of scholarships and coach-es; creating the UK Athletics Hall of Fame; initiat-ing the CATSPYs, an awards program that honors

the best of UK Athletics; the construction of the JoeCraft Center, a $30 million facility that includespractice and administrative space for a variety ofsports; more than $14 million of football facilityimprovements; and the construction of a new $12million track stadium.

Barnhart’s influence reaches far beyond the fieldsof competition. Despite athletics’ urgent financialneeds, Barnhart directs a $1.7-million annual con-tribution to UK’s scholarship program.

Barnhart arrived at UK from Oregon State, wherehe served four successful years (1998-2002) as ath-letics director. Before OSU, he worked in athleticsadministration posts at Tennessee (1986-98),Southern Methodist University (1983-86), Oregon(1983) and San Diego State (1982-83).

Barnhart is a native of Kansas City, Kan. Heearned his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University(Kansas) in 1981 and a master’s in sports adminis-tration from Ohio University in 1982.

His family includes his wife, Connie, three chil-dren, Blaire, Scott, Kirby Willoughby and her hus-band, McKenzie.

The Kentucky men’s soccer team completed its2011 season in early November, with a 9-9-2 recordand a 2-5-1 slate in Conference USA.

The Wildcats were led throughout the season bya prolific offensive attack, as UK netted a staggering35 goals in 20 games, a startling figure after record-ing only 18 goals in 20 games a year ago. UK’soffensive dominance was a change from the stingydefensive units Kentucky has boasted over thecourse of its more than 20-year history.

Kentucky opened its season in impressive fash-ion, posting wins over Dayton and a thrilling 2-1comeback win over No. 9 Michigan on openingweekend. After a win over IPFW and a rain-halteddraw with IUPUI, the Wildcats kicked off whatwould be a brutal travel stretch.

UK traveled to San Francisco for a two-gameswing, facing Stanford and No. 13 Cal. UK’s offensenetted three goals in the two games, but suffered apair of losses to the high-octane Pac-12 clubs.

The Wildcats continued its road swing, traveling tothe opposite coast from its California venture, com-peting in the 2011 Gamecock Classic, hosted by even-tual C-USA regular-season champion South Carolina.UK had its best weekend of the year, posting a 2-1comeback overtime win over High Point in the open-er, before putting together a 5-1 shellacking of No. 15Brown to claim the Gamecock Classic Championship.

UK then made a day trip to Omaha, Neb., to faceoff with No. 3 Creighton, with the Jays owning theNCAA’s top defensive unit. The Wildcats fell behindin front of 2,557 fans and couldn’t get any of its effortsinto the net, with Creighton posting a 2-0 win. Aftera 3-2 win over Evansville in overtime at the UK SoccerComplex, UK again hit the road, suffering a pair ofovertime losses at No. 10 UCF and at FIU as part ofits two-game, six-day trip to Florida.

Kentucky then fell in four consecutive games, including conference home matches againstMarshall and UAB. With its back against the wall,UK responded with a 3-1 smashing of rival Tulsa toremain in the hunt for the C-USA tournament.

With injuries besetting the club, UK traveled toNo. 10 Indiana without its three top scoring threatsand fell 2-0. UK then traveled to Memphis in a must-win situation, but fell 2-0 to drop out of contentionfor the league tournament. UK’s streak of seven con-secutive C-USA tournaments was snapped. Kentuckyhad made the conference tournament in each year as amember of the league.

Throughout the year, UK was led offensively byits duo of forwards Tyler Riggs and Matt Lodge.Riggs led UK with 11 goals and five assists, withLodge netting seven goals and 10 assists, including ahat trick in a win over IPFW. Charles Pettys led UKin the midfield with three goals and seven assists, while senior Josh Mulvany — who had to sit out thefirst 22 games of his UK career while attainingNCAA eligibility — netted four goals with fourassists in 15 games. UK sophomore defender DylanAsher earned second-team All-Conference USAaccolades, with Riggs and Lodge earning third-teamhonors and defender Marco Bordon tabbed to theC-USA All-Freshman team.
