Toshiba has developed 3D Resolution, to accommodate for ―side-by-side‖ 3D

format used for 3D television broadcasting, which has over 50 % less

horizontal resolution than the MAC processes used on 3D Blu-ray disks.

Missing pixels from both partial images within the broadcast 2D image are

artificially added so that these can subsequently be played back sequentially

as ―virtual 3D Full HD images‖ using Toshiba's Active Shutter Technology.

2D-3D CONVERSION

Confidential / Tentative

The characteristics of 1400 sample 3D images have been analyzed.

The input image will be compared to these and depth allocated.

1) Measure the similarity of histogram at 4 corners.

2) Using 1400 sample images, project the

composition, allocate the depth and then construct

3D image.

3D ACTIVE SHUTTER

TECHNOLOGY

L L L L L

R R R R R R

3D glasses with active shutter technology

Toshiba uses what is known as Active Shutter Technology for its 3D TVs. The individual

images for the left and right eyes are shown after each other in very quick succession – so

quickly that our brains cannot see individual images. The speed of the images is transmitted

to the viewer's Active Shutter glasses using infra-red. This alternately closes each lens so

that each eye sees a different perspective.

INTELLIGENT 3D

Unfortunately one side effect of Active Sutter 3D glasses is that colour perception changes and the perceived

brightness falls as one eye is always closed. In order to correct for this effect Toshiba has developed Intelligent

3D.

Complicated lab measurements calculate the difference in terms of brightness and colour perception when

looking through 3D glasses . If a 3D signal is played on a Toshiba 3D TV Intelligent 3D is automatically

activated increasing brightness and correcting colour values.

The overall result it that 2D image quality is also obtainable when viewing 3D content. There is no need for a

consumer to manually adjust the picture to compensate.

HOLLYWOOD MODE / EXPERT

SETTINGS

A lot of effort goes into filming and editing movies in order to create just the right atmosphere. To make

sure that you see every film exactly as the director envisaged and produced it, Toshiba televisions have

specially calibrated Hollywood modes. These settings process the incoming information so that the

image information reflects the production standards of the film industry as closely as possible.

For example, the colour temperature, brightness and Gamma are all adjusted to bring them as close as

possible to the values of the calibrated preview monitors used in film studios

The Gamma correction in Film/Hollywood mode

imitates the Gamma correction of professional studio

monitors

The colour temperature of Film/ Hollywood mode is

adjusted in line with that applied by production

monitors in the studio

Page 48: 2011 Line Up Spec 3

True cinema enthusiasts have just one aim – perfect image quality. Presets such as the Hollywood mode

come very close to optimum picture values. The only thing better is making the effort to calibrate the screen

yourself. The extensive Expert menu allows specialist dealers and experienced customers to manually

configure a Toshiba television perfectly to match the film industries calibrated control monitors.

INTEGRATED TEST

IMAGE FOR IMAGE

ADJUSTMENT

Parameters such as

sharpness, brightness,

contrast, and colour

saturation must be correctly

configured but this is not

always the case due to

mass production tolerances.

To ensure the correct

configurations of these

parameters we have

incorporated a universal test

image into our TV’s making

adjustments to these

settings quick and easy.

*VL748/758 and WL768

ELECTRONIC RGB

COLOUR FILTER

Toshiba has incorporated

electronic colour filters into

its TV’s so that consumers

can easily and accurately

adjust colour saturation.

*RV, XV, VL & WL series

and for SL733/736/753

models

601/709 COLOUR

DECODING SWITCH

The digital component

signal represents a data

reduced version of the

original RGB signal. To

display an image on the

screen the component

signal must be converted

back into RGB. (known as

colour decoding)

However standard definition

signals differ from HD

signals in the type of

equation used. For example

you would want to make

sure that a HD signal was

not being viewed via an SD

switch as the image

reproduction would display

incorrectly.

The real advantage of

Toshiba’s manual switching

is when using a DVD

upscaler and the original SD

signal is unconverted to HD.

The televisions decoding

switch can now be changed

manually using the 601/709

colour decoding switch. This

ensures correct colour

decoding at all times.

*VL748/758 and WL768

ADVANCED COLOUR

TEMPERATURE

CORRECTION

The colour tempuature for

video is 6,500 Kelvin and

should be identical across

all greyscales

(brightnesses) so that a

image retains the same

colours at all brightnesses.

While Hollywood mode is

calibrated to produce this

mass production tolerances

can occur.

To compensate for this

Toshiba TV’s come with a

colour temperature

correction function that can

be used to adjust up to ten

greyscale points across all

brightnesses in 10 intervals

independently of each other.

This function in addition to

correct colour space

decoding leads to

unprecedented image

quality.

*VL748/758 and WL768

COPY TO ALL

Because separate

calibration is required for

different inputs we have

implemented a Copy to all

function with which a

previously performed

calibration can be copied

across to other video inputs.

AUTO LOOKUP TABLE

Confidential / Tentative

Toshiba TV’s now posses an automatic calibration function, in

which the colour characteristics of LCD can be adjusted to

studio quality. This process is possible through the use of a

measuring sensor that transmits via USB to the TV’s built-in

processor.

Internally generated test images are displayed on screen which

are then measured by the auto-calibration probe connected to

the TV and tell the CEVO engine what image correction needs

to take place in order to represent the optimum colour

temperature.

The calibration process takes a few minutes and in addition to

colour temperature it is also possible to adjust the gamma-

curve of the TV to professional standards.

Thanks to these picture enhancements Toshiba ensures that

colour variations due to mass production tolerances need not

stop you from viewing a film as it is intended by Hollywood.

When the consumer purchases a

Toshiba TV they are asked where

they are mounting it, is the TV on a

wall or a table?

SoundNavi uses this information to

optimise the speaker control

settings, providing the consumer

with the best possible sound

quality.

During product development, Toshiba

uses Audyssey EQ™ technology to run a

whole range of calibration and

optimisation procedures on its flat-

screen TVs. The system uses several

hundred measuring points to correct the

sound and optimise it to achieve a

balanced, noticeably improved effect.

ECO 2011

Around December 2011 it will become law for TV manufacturers to declare the energy

efficiency of their product using an A to G scale. (Toshiba to implement in 2011A)

Main points include:

• The manufacturer (supplier) has to include a printed label with the TV (i.e. does not need to

actually stick to all sets).

• The retailer (dealer) must ensure the label is clearly visible on any TV displayed at point of

sale.

• Any advert or technical promotional material for a specific TV from either a manufacturer or

retailer must include the energy class (ranking).

• There is an additional 4 W allowance for either additional tuners or built in hard disk (8W if

both).

Having analysed the current 2010A / B models a summary can be seen below:

10A models - 4 B’s, 49 C’s, 20 D’s ranked.

10B models - 2 B’s, 15 C’s, 6 D’s ranked.

• 2nd stage of TV ErP requirement comes in from August 2011: 0.3W standby / 0.5W if power

switch is clearly visible.

The European Eco label is a voluntary scheme, established in 1992 to encourage businesses to

market products and services that are kinder to the environment, the environmental criteria

behind it are tough, and only the very best products, which are kindest to the environment, are

entitled to carry the EU Eco label.
