There are eight new stu-dent-athletes and three new assis-tant coaches, but one things re-mains the same, the Lindsey Wilson College men’s soccer team is going to be a force to be contended with. While there is no denying that there are plenty of new faces, there is enough returning talent on the roster to prove that the level of play on the fi eld isn;t due to drop off. After seven seasons and two national championships, assistant coach Gavin Oldham left the team for a head coaching opporunity and Lee Chalmers, Thuba Nkomazana and Joe Adams were brought in as the new assistants to head coach Ray Wells. At their disposal is a roster that includes two returning NAIA All-Americans in junior forward Le-bogang Moloto and senior defender Chris Williams. There are also four return-ers who were named All Mid-South

Confer-ence who include the two All-Amer-icans as well as senior forward Moses Aduny and

junior defender Sicelo Buthelezi.

Forwards/Midfi elders

The quality frontline depth of this Lindsey Wilson team is going to help push it towards another na-tional title. Five players return who have seen time in the starting 11 and three newcomers look to chal-lenge for immediate playing time. Moloto is ready to become a team leader on offense in his ju-nior season coming off of a season with seven goals and two assists in 2010. The junior has been a part of a national championship team in 2009 and knows what it takes to reach that status again. The veteran Aduny is anoth-er capable goal scorer, while junior Eddy Campbell could be the sur-prise addition to the offense coming off of a redshirt season as he was the 2009 NSCAA National Player of the Year while at San Jacinto Col-lege. Freshman Philip Sandergren is another newcomer to the Blue Raider roster that will be called upon early to contribute due to his obvious physical tools.

Defenders

Williams and Anyelo Avila are the senior leaders for the Lind-sey Wilson defense. Williams has been a regular starter the past two seasons, including being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 NAIA National Championship. Freshman Carl Pettersson

Lif is another heralded recruit out of Umea, Sweden who possesses great speed and ball control, which should allow him to see time in

the starting 11 early on. Sophomore Albert Edwards and the junior Buthelezi will pro-vide quality depth as well as they are All-MSC caliber talents who will help keep the opposing offenses off balance.

Goalkeepers

Freshman Yuta Nomura will be called upon in goal for the Blue Raiders right away. A native of Tokyo, Japan the 5-9, 160 lbs., Nomura is a great talent who specializes in his quick-ness from one side of the goal to the other to aid him in shutting down offenses. Playing behind such a vet-eran and quality defense will help Nomura as this will be his fi rst sea-son of collegiate soccer.

Head Coach

Ray Wells

11

Ray Wells begins his 22nd season as the head men’s soccer coach at Lindsey Wilson College in 2011. The seven-time NAIA National Coach of the Year has led the Lindsey Wilson to eight NAIA na-tional titles. He has guided the Blue Raiders to all 401 program wins since creating the program from scratch in 1990. Over the 21 years, Wells has led Lindsey Wil-son to a 401-67-22 overall mark for an .841 winning percentage. In addition to winning the eight national titles -- 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2009 -- Wells guided the men’s soccer program to 18 conference titles and 16 conference tournament championships. During his career, Wells’ teams have produced winning streaks of 28 (the longest in NAIA soccer history), 22, 20, and 13 games, and hold the second-longest unbeaten string in NAIA soccer history (31 games), which includes a 25-0-0 record during the 1998 championships season. In 28 collegiate seasons as a head coach, Wells has led his teams to a combined mark of 473-103-32. At four-year institutions, Wells’ record is 412-79-25 in 23 seasons. At Lindsey Wilson, Wells’ teams have reached the NAIA National Tournament 18 times in 21 years, including appearances in the NAIA National Cham-pionship game eight of the past 15 seasons, where the Blue Raiders have never lost. The Blue Raiders’ record in the NAIA National Tournament is 40-10-4 (.778 win pct.). The 40 NAIA National Tournament wins is one shy of the all-time record held by Quincy (Ill.) Uni-versity for the most at the national tournament. Since the inception of the Lindsey Wilson men’s soccer program, the Blue Raiders have lost just three conference games. Formally of the Ken-tucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and currently as a member of the Mid-South Conference (MSC), Wells’ teams have posted a 98-3-3 record in conference regular season games and a 141-4-3 record against conference foes all-time, including the 16 conference tournament titles. Wells has guided Lindsey Wilson to a 196-17-9 (.903 win pct.) record at home, including a 122-14-3 mark in the fi rst 10 seasons at Walter S. Reuling Sta-dium, the Blue Raiders’ on-campus soccer stadium.

Wells has been named KIAC Coach of the Year on seven different occasions and Mid-South Confer-ence Coach of the Year four times, along with being named NAIA regional coach of the year six times. During his fi rst nine years at Lindsey Wilson, Coach Wells was also Lindsey Wilson’s athletic direc-tor, where he oversaw the development of 13 new sports programs. Prior to becoming a coach, Wells was a stand-out collegiate player at Appalachian State (NC) University, earning All-Southern Conference honors in 1981. After earning his bachelor’s degree in 1982, Coach Wells was hired as assistant men’s soccer coach at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. He spent one season as an assistant before being elevated to the head coaching post in 1983, leading the Eagles to an 11-12-3 record in two sea-sons. In 1985, Wells was named head men’s soccer coach at Andrew College, a junior college in Cuth-bert, Ga., where in fi ve seasons he led the Tigers to a 61-24-7 overall record, including a trip to the NJCAA Final Four in 1988. In his 28 seasons as a head coach, Wells’ teams have produced 62 All-Americans (59 at LWC), 86 all-region choices, and 159 all-conference per-formers. Wells graduated from Appalachian State Uni-versity in 1981 and later earned two master’s de-grees from Georgia Southern University in 1984 and 1985. He and his wife, Cindy, have two sons, Chris and Trae.

2010 Review

Heading into the 2010 season, the Lindsey Wilson College men’s soccer team had won every Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship since joining the league in 2000 and had not lost a home regular-season conference game since 2001. But this season was different. There was bal-ance like never before within the MSC with the Univer-sity of Rio Grande (Ohio) fi nishing the regular season undefeated at 21-0 and ranked fi rst in the fi nal NAIA Coaches’ Poll. University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) performed well too, ranked 20th at 14-3-3 and Campbellsville (Ky.) University had a solid year, receiving votes in the poll while putting together a 19-6 record. Rio Grande topped Lindsey Wilson on its own fi eld 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 23, then won again in the MSC Tournament fi nal 2-0 in Rio Grande, Ohio. Lindsey Wilson didn’t have a bad year of its own by any means. The Blue Raiders opened the season ranked No. 1 in the nation and fi nished ranked fi fth in the fi nal poll and ended the season with a 15-4-1 re-cord, including a 7-1 mark in league play. All of that considered, the team still had one goal in mind and that was defending its national title. After winning the national championship in 2009, the Blue Raider’s journey to a second straight title ended earlier than expected in NAIA fi rst-round play at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.Christian Castillo netted his second goal of the day in the 57th minute to push Southern Polytechnic State (Ga.) University past the Blue Raiders 2-1 on Nov. 20. The loss was the fi rst for Lindsey Wilson in the fi rst round of the national tournament. Entering the

game, the Blue Raiders held a 3-0-0 record in fi rst-round play. The Blue Raiders weren’t without chances down the stretch to tie the game as freshman Orrin Farrell attempted four straight corner kicks after the second Castillo goal to no avail. Other opportunities came from Farrell and sophomores Joe Tait and Mat Luak who all took strikes at the goal that were saved by Hornet keeper Eric Ati. Senior Carnell Learmond, junior Chris Williams and sophomore Lebogang Moloto all receiced All-Amer-ican honors from the NAIA after the season. Learmond was the team’s top goal scorer with 19, while Moloto added seven goals and two assists for 16 points. Learmond was also named the MSC Men’s Soc-cer Player of the Year at the annual awards banquet before the conference championship. Other Lindsey Wilson honorees on the All-Conference Team were Williams, Michael Azira, Farrell, Moloto and Moses Aduny. Sicelo Buthelezi was an honorable-men-tion selection. Forty-four student-athletes were recognized as Academic All Mid-South Conference. The distinction is reserved for those with a sophomore or higher class standing and a 3.25 and above grade point average on a 4.0 scale. On the academic list from Lindsey Wilson were Samuel Asante, Anyelo Avila, Buthelezi, Moloto, Zetroy Robertson, Hezekiah Weiss, Frederick Were, Williams and Ismar Neto. The fi rst-round NAIA loss brought a close to the careers of seniors Pedro Caetano, Were, Neto, Lear-mond and Robertson.

On April 24, 1995, the presidents of member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn., formed the Mid-South Confer-ence to serve as the competitive base for their entire sports programs. The move effectively merged the athletic pursuits of similar institutions. The conference is unique in its broad based athletic competition for men and wom-en, offering championships in 18 sports.

The presidents of each school serves on the Board of Directors which directly oversees the conference and the of-fi ce of the commissioner. This administrative "hands on" role of each school's president is unique among athletic conferences and ensures a proper balance in the academic pursuits of student athletes.

True to its commitment to broad based athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference recognizes the value of extensive campus based sports programs that maximize the opportunities for athletic competition among their students.
