SEASON OUTLOOKIf the 2011 Lynn University men’s tennisteam wants to revisit its National Champi-onship days from 2007, they will have touse a match from April 17, 2010 as its mo-tivation. After dominating eventual na-tional champion Barry on the road duringthe regular season, the Fighting Knightsfell to the Buccaneers on the 17th of Aprilin the SSC Championship Game, missingout on a chance to host the NCAA SouthRegional.

Head Coach Mike Perez, the winningestcoach in any sport in Lynn history, sees alot in common between this team and thesquad that won the national title in 2007.Perez also brought back Julien Carsuzaaand Tomas Racak, who were both keycomponents of the 2007 national champi-onship team, as assistant coaches.

Senior All-American Alessandro Sarra isthe top returning player for the FightingKnights and should once again be pen-ciled into the No. 1 position most matches. The native of Frosinone, Italy, went 12-8last season in singles play and teamedwith Willie Wolfer to form the No. 3 dou-bles team in the nation.

Wolfer, the SSC Freshman of the Year lastseason, will see most of his time in thesecond position after splitting time be-tween three and four last year. Also aFirst-Team All-Conference selection,Wolfer went an impressive 18-2 in singlesplay in 2010.

Juniors Luca Pavanelli and Alex Voirin willsee most of their time in the middle of thelineup as both saw time there as sopho-mores in 2010. Pavanelli went 13-6 lastyear primarily from the third spot whileVoirin, an All-SSC performer last season, was 15-3 playing from the fourth and fifthflights. Pavanelli, a Milan, Italy native, might have the early edge after a solid fallseason and enters 2011 ranked nationally.

George Laffey went 11-7 last season, hisfirst in a Blue & White uniform after playing

his first two seasons at Division I FairfieldUniversity in Connecticut. The senior fromBasking Ridge, N.J. played primarily fromthe fifth and sixth spots and should battlePavanelli and Voirin for spots in the top ofthe order.

Rounding out the returners are sopho-mores Carlos Sanz and Victor Teboul.

Both saw limited time last season but havethe talent to step into key spots in thelineup at any time.

In his 22nd season as head coach, Perezhas brought in a solid recruiting classheaded by Penn State transfer BenjiKendall and freshman Vlad Cirla.

Kendall missed last season but had a win-ning record in both singles and doubles inhis first two years with the Nittany Lions.

Cirla comes to Boca Raton from Romania

where he had an illustrious junior career. The freshman had a great fall, besting theNo. 1 singles player in the country, PhilipPakebusch of Valdosta State, and entersthe spring ranked 10th nationally.

Also new to the squad is freshman JamesDean who was heavily recruited out ofNew York and should also battle for a spotin the lineup.

Once again, the Fighting Knights have or-ganized one of the most difficult schedulesin the country and will take on every teamin the top eight of the preseason poll. TheBlue & White will travel to Saint Leo for itsseason opener before heading to No. 7Florida Southern on February 6.

Twenty-second ranked Northwood headsto Boca for LU’s home opener on February9 before Lynn hosts St. Thomas (Fla.) onFebruary 15.

Lynn will then travel to Valdosta, Ga. for athree-day tournament against No. 8 WestFlorida, the second-ranked Blazers andAuburn-Montgomery, the top team in theNAIA.

After the trip to the Peach State, Lynnhosts Bates College, one of the top teamsin Division III, before travelling to EmbryRiddle, another tough NAIA team onMarch 5.

The Blue & White will be at home for theirfinal seven matches, five of which areagainst Top-15 opponents, before headingto Fort Lauderdale for the SSC Tourna-ment.

Season after season, Lynn University men's and women'stennis coach Mike Perez has shown he is able to do one thing:produce champions. Now in his 22nd season in Boca Raton, the man with seven national titles to his credit has shown con-sistency in not only producing champions on the tennis courts, but also in the classroom. Academically, Perez's teams rank ator near the top of the LU Athletic Department's grade point av-erage listing year after year. Perez's tennis programs have become synonymous with suc-cess with over 700 career wins. Boasting an overall record of778-202 (.794), Perez has notched 445 victories with thewomen and 333 on the men's side. Under his tutelage, thenumber of honors has been downright staggering as 49 differ-ent All-America players have donned the Blue and White for atotal of 132 separate honors.

This past season, the women’s team won its 14th consecutiveRegional Championship and got as far as the NCAA Semifi-nals. The trip to the Final Four was the fifth-straight for Perezand the Blue & White as they fell to NCAA Runner-Up BYU-Hawaii. For the first time since 2008, under the tutelage ofPerez, two Fighting Knights, Magdalene Ekert and KaterinaJiskrova earned All-America honors in both singles and dou-bles. Also as impressive was the duo, as well as Eleonora Ian-nozzi, all received SSC First-Team honors in singles, the firsttime that has happened since 2000.

On the men’s side, Perez led Lynn University to its third-straight 19-win season. Like the women, three FightingKnights, Tomas Racak, Alessandro Sarra and Willi Wolfer, earned received SSC First-Team honors in singles. Wolferalso became just the second Lynn player to win the SSCFreshman of the Year award. The trio of men also all-receivedAll-America honors in either singles or doubles, the sixth-straight year LU had three All-America selections.

Reaching the NCAA finals with the women’s squad for the sec-ond consecutive season and seventh time overall in 2009, theFighting Knights kicked off the season on a 28-match winning-streak. Perez’s Blue and White squad took down a pair of top-ranked teams, Armstrong Atlantic State and BYU-Hawai’i, enroute to setting the program record for wins. Going undefeatedin league play and winning a record ninth Sunshine State Con-ference championship, Perez was recognized for his efforts bybeing named SSC Coach of the Year an unprecedented eighthtime and tabbed South Region Coach of the Year.

On the men’s side, the 2009 Knights put together their bestSunshine State Conference season with its first undefeatedleague season. Although bowing out in the NCAA quarterfi-nals, the Blue and White finished the season ranked third inthe country while senior Julien Carsuzaa was named SSCPlayer of the Year, South Region and National Senior Player ofthe Year while breaking the school records for both singles anddoubles victories.

The 2008 Fighting Knights women’s squad reached the NCAAfinals for the sixth time before bowing out to Armstrong AtlanticState. Lynn won 26 matches while sweeping through Sun-shine State Conference player for yet another undefeated sea-son and an eighth league championship.

In 2007, Perez brought the Fighting Knights to new heights bysetting program-bests in victories for the men with 24 and athen-best 25 with the women. The men's squad earned its firstnational title with a 5-1 victory over defending champions Val-dosta State, the school that knocked off the Knights in the titlematch the year before.

Winning the Sunshine State Conference title on the men's andwomen's side in 2007, Lynn became the first school to winback-to-back titles with both teams in league history. Perezwas named SSC Coach of the Year for both squads, earninghim a record sixth time with the women and the second con-secutive with the men.

Honors abounded for Perez in 2007 as he picked up ITASoutheast Region Coach of the Year accolades with the menand women. He was also named the Division II NationalCoach of the Year for the men, the first time he has won theaward in the NCAA.

Also impressive was Perez's inclusion as Top Coach on theFirst 25 Years on the SSC's Women's Tennis Silver Anniver-sary Team. Lynn represented a league-best five players, in-cluding Top Player Monika Mastalirova, despite only being in the conference for eight years.

During the 2006 fall season, Lynn swept the ITA Southeast Re-gion Championships on both sides. The doubles pair of Den-nis Riegraf and Julien Carsuzaa also won the ITA ‘Super Bowl'of Small College Tennis, a first for Perez, and won their firstround match at the ITA National Indoor Championships againstthe defending Division I champions from Pepperdine Univer-sity. Carsuzaa would again win the Division II doubles title twoyears later as a senior in 2008, teaming with sophomoreAlessandro Sarra to achieve the feat.

Along with the women's program's six national titles, Perezalso boasts the third best all-time record in NCAA Division IIpostseason tournament play for active schools with a 60-13(.822) record. Always clutch on the big stage, his teams havemade 14 consecutive championship appearances and 13 finalfours since becoming a D-II institution in the 1997 season.Only traditional powerhouses Armstrong Atlantic and BYU-Hawaii have better winning percentages, but both have lostNational Titles at the hands of Perez's Fighting Knights.

On the men's side, Perez's squads have reached the postsea-son 12 times since beginning NCAA play in 1997. The Knights'26-11 (.703) overall championship record is sixth best all-time

and the Blue and White are 17-4 in the past five seasons, reaching the final match both 2006 and 2007.

An accomplished high school and collegiate baseball player inArizona, Perez moved to Florida in 1988 and joined the LU ath-letics family as an assistant tennis coach. One season later heassumed the reigns of both the men's and women's program, putting into motion what has proved to be a tradition of suc-cess, excellence and domination. His first women's nationaltitle came in 1993 as the Knights captured the NAIA NationalChampionship. The team would win it all again at the NAIAlevel in 1995 and 1996 before the school decided to move tothe NCAA and eventually the Sunshine State Conference.

The move up to the NCAA did little to slow down the successof the women's program as the Knights took home the hard-ware in 1997 and 1998, both times at the expense of Arm-strong Atlantic. Perez won four national titles in succession, afeat normally reserved for coaching legends. Lynn added an-other national title in 2001 with a 5-3 victory over BYU-Hawaii,the Seasiders' first Division II loss after a 103-match winningstreak. As a Division II program, the Knights also have four ofrunner-up finishes and 12 semifinals appearances.

For his efforts on the women's side, the 1987 University of Ari-zona political science graduate was named NAIA NationalCoach of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 1996. The SunshineState Conference bestowed the same honor upon him in 1998,1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and most recently the 2008 sea-son. The Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame named himtheir Coach of the Year in 2002, while the NAIA named himCoach of the Decade for the 90's.

Perez's coaching acumen isn't just confined to the women'sprogram as his men's team has been a player on the nationalscene as well. The 1993 NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year,Perez's teams finished in the national top 10 every seasonfrom 1993-1997. Their success didn't stop once LU decided tomake the move to the NCAA ranks, as the Knights have fin-ished in the Top-25 every season.

Michael Steven Perez was born on Sept. 17, 1965 in New-burgh, N.Y. He has been married to the former Melissa Nacesince July of 1998. They are the proud parents of MadelineElizabeth who was born on Sept. 13, 2001. The Perez familycurrently resides in Lake Worth. Away from tennis, Perez is al-ways working to lower his handicap around the greens andalso enjoys maintaining his garden and engaging in lively politi-cal discussions.

After finishing one of the most decorated men’s tennis careersat Lynn University, Julien Carsuzaa is in his second season asan assistant coach with the Fighting Knights. Carsuzaa is theprogram’s all-time leader in both singles and doubles victoriesand was a member of LU’s first men’s tennis national champi-onship team in 2007.

In his first season as an assistant in 2010, Carsuzaa helpedthe Fighting Knights to an 18-5 overall record and a trip to theNCAA South Regional Championship Final. The Blue & Whitefinished with a No. 5 national ranking.

Named an All-American six times by the Intercollegiate TennisAssociation, Carsuzaa collected the honor in singles all foryears with the Blue and White while picking up the accolade indoubles as a sophomore and senior.
