Get started on becoming a member of our community.

Page 3: 2011 Orientation Booklet

You’re almost here.

After months of answering the question, “so where are you going to college next year?,”

Emmanuel is starting to feel like more than just a response, just a name, just a place.

In a few weeks, you’ll take your first steps as an Emmanuel student. You’ll be on campus,

meeting people who will be a big part of your next four years. People who will impact the

rest of your life. You’ll start to realize that this is not just any place. It’s your place.

Inside this brochure you will discover some of the highlights of Orientation, as well as the

things you can look forward to as an Emmanuel student. You’ll find insights from current

students who share their thoughts on the various activities in which they’re involved and

the community they enjoy and speak of often. In other words, everything you need to hit

the ground running this fall.

So, what now? Well, as you’re about to learn, that’s up to you. Welcome to Emmanuel!

Daniel J. Darcy

Associate Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities

Orientation 2011

Orientation is more than an introduction to Emmanuel, it’s a glimpse into what you can expect as a student here. It’s the start of the next chapter of your life.

First-Year Students

What Happens at Orientation?Orientation is our first opportunity to welcome you as a member of the Emmanuel

community. During the two-day program, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Day 1 and

concludes at 4:30 p.m. on Day 2, you’ll get a sneak peek of what life’s like here at

Emmanuel College. In addition to staying overnight in the residence halls and meeting

your new classmates, we’ll help you get started on becoming an active member of

our community.

We’ve put together a full itinerary of activities for you, which you will receive upon your

arrival to campus. Until then, here are a few highlights of what happens at Orientation:

Day 1

Meet Your Orientation LeadersOrientation Leaders (OLs) are a select group of current students dedicated to welcoming

you, answering questions and introducing you to everything Emmanuel. Once you’ve

checked in, you will meet in small groups with your assigned OLs, who will serve as

resources to you throughout Orientation and be familiar faces around campus when you

return for the fall semester.

NyLeesa Graham ’12

“There is a great mixture of clubs

and organizations that represent all

of the different people and interests

at Emmanuel.”

As an Administrative Orientation Leader, NyLeesa plays a big part in making your

Orientation experience memorable. She’s a Resident Assistant as well, so helping new

students adjust to college life is all in a day’s work for her. She’s a great resource to

students interested in getting involved on campus. A sociology major, she also minors

in information technology and is pursuing a certificate in Spanish. What she loves most

about Emmanuel? Campus events.

Page 6: 2011 Orientation Booklet

Meet Your Academic AdvisorOur Office of Academic Advising provides the support you need to attain your

academic goals and helps you transition into life as a college student. You’ll first meet

your Academic Advisor during your Assessment of Foundation Skills and later during

course selection on Day 2. Please note your Assessment of Foundation Skills session

includes online testing in computer literacy, mathematics (calculators may be used)

and French or Spanish, if you took either in high school. Find out more

at www.emmanuel.edu/orientation.

Note: You will have the option of using a Mac or a PC for your Assessment of

Foundation Skills session. Please note your preference on your Orientation

Registration form.

Succeeding in the ClassroomThe sense of community at Emmanuel is as much academic as it is social. Here you’ll

be introduced to members of our faculty and Academic Resource Center (ARC) staff

who will inform you about all the academic support that is available to you as an

Emmanuel student.

A Day In The LifeYour OLs showcase their acting skills with these skits based on scenarios you may

soon find yourself in as a college student. Whether it’s how to get involved with student

activities, where to turn for academic help, or the ins and outs of getting around on the

“T” – Boston’s public transportation system – the OLs will walk you through a day in

the life of a typical Emmanuel student.

Day 2

Course SelectionWith assistance from your Academic Advisor, you will choose your course schedule

for your first semester at Emmanuel. This is your opportunity to peruse our extensive

liberal arts and sciences offerings and begin your journey toward a college degree.

Academic Life

At Emmanuel, you will find the support needed to shape and direct you as you plan

your future. It all starts the moment you arrive.

Through our First-Year Seminar, you will work closely with a member of the faculty and

a group of classmates to learn about the academic traditions of the liberal arts and

sciences, and the expectations and values of our academic community. With the help

of your Academic Advisor, you’ll develop a unique academic plan and find the guidance

you need as you navigate your first few semesters. Unsure of a major? Worry not.

Our Majors Exploration Program (MEP) helps you and your Academic Advisor

determine an appropriate area of study based on your interests, values, personality, skills

and extracurricular activities.

At our Academic Convocation, you’ll help us mark the start of the academic year. You’ll

enjoy discussions in the humanities and arts at our Wyant Lecture Series, and hear from

top researchers in the sciences when we host the joint Emmanuel-Merck Monthly

Science Seminar Series as well. Maybe you’ll accept the challenge of our Honors

Program or take part in some of the exciting clubs and honor societies listed to the right.

Or perhaps you’ll take advantage of Boston as your extended classroom and explore all

the research, service learning and internship opportunities available.

Whatever you choose, it’s all at your fingertips. Are you ready?

Academic traditions are an important part of the

Emmanuel experience. Many of these traditions can be

traced back to the very first years of the College’s founding.

During your first year, you’ll be officially welcomed into the

Emmanuel community. From there, you can look forward

to Sophomore Pinning, Junior Ring & Tassel Ceremony, and

Senior Cap & Gown.

Learn more about academic traditions at Emmanuel

by visiting www.emmanuel.edu/accepted and

select “Life at Emmanuel.”
