Wh Ga
Plan? When the Brookings Institution published ExportNation this year, greater Portland-Vancouver madea big showing: number two exporter among all U.S.metro regions, second-greatest ve-year growth inexports, number one in computer and electronicsexports to China.
Tis news didnt come entirely as a surprise.Portland-Vancouver makes things, as it has since timebegan rom merchant ships to silicon chips andnow wind turbine parts, solar panels and lithium-ionbatteries hundreds o products increasingly in
demand by markets arther and arther ung.Invention, manuacture and trade orm the back-
bone o the Portland regions economy, with strongsuits in hardware and sotware, clean tech, biotechand born o the regions insatiable thirst or cycling, hiking, camping and skiing a hyper-active cluster ooutdoor-wear and gear rms.
Businesses have good reason or making Portland-Vancouver their home: easy access to markets, smartworkers and low costs (utilities, commercial space, wages and taxes all take a smaller bite than in otherwestern metros). Te region, too, is amously livable, blessed by nature and man with a spectacular back-
drop o woods and water and a main stage o urbanpleasures interlaced with a network o bus, rail andbike routes.
Troughout this Work Book, greater Portland ismeasured against nine competitive western U.S. metrosto illustrate the regions strengths. While the dataspeak or themselves, theyre enhanced by the voices osix regional executives who introduce their companiesand address the question: Why greater Portland?
Given a value proposition that exalts both workand liestyle, the appropriate rejoinder is: Why not?
