WEEK 5 NEWS AND NOTESLAST TIME OUT Despite a 16-point second half lead, Southern dropped a 38-33 decision to rival Florida A&M in the 2011 Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic Saturday in Atlanta. Leading 19-17 at the half, the Jaguars increased their lead after Byron Williams’ 79-yard punt return TD and Demetric Roger’s 59-yard INT return TD. But after scoring three TDs in the first half, the Jaguars failed to score an offensive touchdown in the second half. Meanwhile, another valiant effort by Miss. Valley St. is squandered as the Delta Devils’ upset bid over Prairie View fell short in a 43-34 loss in Prairie View, Texas.

SOUTHERN U. VS. MVSU SERIES HISTORy Before the Jaguars’ stunning 31-28 loss to MVSU In 2005, the Jaguars had reeled off 11 straight wins over the Delta Devils. The Jaguars are currently in the midst of a 4-game win streak with an average margin of victory of 23.5. Throughout the SU-MVSU history, there have been a number of neutral site games played. Southern has only faced Valley once in Itta Bena since 2001. In 2001, the Jaguars picked up a 49-0 shutout victory in Shreveports. The Jaguar’s 2003 championship season began with Ezra Landry returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown against the Delta Devils in Jackson, Miss. Southern added a 23-6 win over Valley in the Chicago Classic in 2007.

ON THE TUBE This season, Southern football will be feature on a number of nationally televised broad-casts. The 2011 season opener against Tennessee State in the John Merritt Classic will be broadcasted on HSRN and OVCSports TV. Southern-Jackson State in A.W. Mumford Stadium on Sept. 17 will be the SWAC Game of the Week and will be carried over the in-ternet via SWAC-TV. Versus will broadcast the Atlanta Football Classic against FAMU live from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Jaguars return to live action on SWAC-TV when they travel to face UAPB in Golden Lion Stadium on Oct. 15. Southern concludes 2011 against Grambling in the annual post-Thanksgiving State Farm Bayou Classic on NBC on Nov. 26 in New Orleans, La. All Southern home football games are shown on Cox Sports television via tape-delayed broadcast.

SWAC’S POW TIMES THREE Thanks in part to his electrifying 79-yard TD on a punt return, Byron Williams made it three straight weeks a Jaguars has earned SWAC Player of the Week honors. Williams, who totaled 136 all-purpose yards in a 38-33 loss to FAMU, earned SWAC Special Teams Player of the Week Wednesday. Two weeks prior, Dray Joseph’s 308-yard, 3 TDs perfor-mance in a 21-6 win over Alabama A&M earned him SWAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Last week, Jamie Payton’s 11 tackles, one sack and three turnovers (2 fumble recoveries and one INT) in a 28-24 loss to Jackson State propelled him to being named the SWAC’s Defensive Player of the Week.

FINISH STRONG The difference in Southern being 3-1 instead of 1-3 is no more evident than in the score by quarter statistics. This season, the Jaguars have been outscored 27-0 in the fourth quarter. The previous two weeks, the Jaguars inability to score in the final stanza has lead to two heartbreaking losses to bitter rivals Jackson State and FAMU.

WHO’S ON DECK The Jaguars return to the friendly confines of A.W. Mumford Stadium to host former SU standout and Baton Rouge native Heishma Northern’s Prairie View A&M Panthers next Saturday. Despite owning a commanding 51-24-2 edge in the series, Southern has lost four of the last five meetings against PVU, including three straight dating back to a 24-23 loss in 2008. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted via tape delay on Cox Sports Television.

THE STUMP MITCHELL FILE

Stump Mitchell Head CoachSouthern University Jaguars2nd season

Lyvonia “Stump” Mitchell returns for his second campaign as head football coach at Southern University.

Offering more than 20 years of NFL experience, Mitchell has made crafting eager young people into productive, civic-minded men his top priority as leader of the Jaguar program. His commitment to the academic success of the student-athletes under his watch has been evident since the day he accepted the position of head coach.

In Mitchell’s 2010 debut, he led the Jaguars to a 37-27 comeback win over Delaware State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, Fla. The Jaguars finished with a 2-9 record in Mitchell’s inaugural season.

Prior to his arrival on “The Bluff,” Mitchell served as the running backs coach on the Washington Redskins’ coaching staff in 2008 and 2009, adding a fresh perspective to the Redskins’ talented group of running backs. He arrived at Redskins Park from the Seattle Seahawks, where he had spent the previous nine seasons coaching the running backs.

In each of his first seven seasons in Seattle, Mitchell, a member coached a 1,000-yard rusher (Ricky Watters for two years, Shaun Alexander for five years).

Mitchell joined the Seahawks following three years as head coach at Morgan State University. He originally joined the MSU staff in 1995 as offensive coordinator, earning a promotion to head coach the following year. Under Mitchell’s tutelage, the Bears boasted a strong rushing attack that averaged 148.9 yards per game in 1997.

Mitchell’s coaching career began in 1991,

when he served as an assistant coach on the World League of American Football’s San Antonio Riders’ staff. He then accepted a position as the head coach at Casa Grande (Ariz.) High School (1991-94), where he led the team to a playoff berth in his second year.

Mitchell played nine years in the NFL as a standout running back with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals. He was a ninth-round draft choice by the Cardinals in 1981 and would go on to become one of the great running backs and kick returners in Cardinals history.

Mitchell is the Cardinals’ all-time leader in combined yardage with 11,988 yards and ranks second with 4,649 yards rushing on 986 attempts and 32 touchdowns. His 177 kickoff returns for 4,007 yards are both franchise records. He posted 14 100-yard games and finished with a 4.7-yard rushing average, second-best in the franchise history.

During his collegiate days at the Citadel, Mitchell was the Southern Conference Player of the Year in 1980 and rushed for 1,647 yards in a single season. Mitchell earned third team Associated Press All-American honors his senior year. He holds many of the school’s rushing records today including the record as Citadel’s all-time leading rusher with 4,062 yards.

Mitchell is one of only six former Bulldog football players who have their jersey retired at The Citadel.

Mitchell was honored with the Chuck Drulis Award for community service in 1982 and the Byron “Whizzer” White Humanitarian Award for charity work in 1984. He was born on March 15, 1959, in Kingsland, Ga.
