Welcome to Aggie VolleyballHere at UC Davis volleyball, we take pride in our roles as student-athletes. We play hard, study hard, but most of all, have a great time! Aside from the normal practicing and playing, we are involved in many other activities.

We are active in fundraising events, community outreach, youth camps, and other charitable pursuits. Our goal is not just to be volleyball players, but to be an integral part of the community and be contributing members of society.

Throughout the year, our players conduct clinics for local schools and many of them also help coach at our summer camps. At the local clinics, we help mentor the young kids and help them understand the importance of doing well in school, making good decisions, and being good people. These are some of the most rewarding activities we do. The youngsters just love interacting with our student-athletes and really look up to them.

There are many great reasons to be a part of our team, but one of the best is the opportunity to create great friendships with your teammates. Your teammates become like family and are some of your best friends. Players hang out together, go out together, and just have plain old fun together!

Every year, the Aggie Auction raises money for our athletics program. Our team joins every other athletics program to help the event run smoothly. It is a great time for the student-athletes, as they

know that their efforts help the program, but on top of that, it’s an opportunity to dress up!

We also raise money for others. A big part of Aggie Athletics is helping those who are less fortunate. Players are constantly involved with food drives, clothes drives, helping feed the homeless, raising money for disaster victims, and many other charitable endeavors. In 2007-08, the Big West Conference ran a competition among its member institutions to see which school was most active in charitable fundraisers... and we won!

Another great part of being a part of UC Davis volleyball is the travel. In the past four years, we have played matches in Utah, Texas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado and Arizona. We love to travel outside of California if we can, so players can experience other parts of the country and meet new people and see different things. This is all part of the experience when you are part of the team.

As we establish our place in Division I and the Big West Conference, our goal is to become nationally recognized and make the NCAA Championships. As we immerse ourselves in this process, we also want our team to value the hard work that is required for success, but at the same time, enjoy the process and learn about themselves and others. Our program aims to teach skills beyond the volleyball court and to ensure that our team gets the most out of their college experience.

JAMIE HOLMES Head Coach4th YearBethany ’94

Jamie Holmes became UC Davis’ ninth head women’s volleyball coach in March of 2008, making an immediate impact on the program. In her initial season, the Aggies posted as 12-17 record, tripling their win total from the previous year. Then in 2009, Holmes led UC Davis to a 20-10 record and a second-place 11-5 in the Big West Conference.

For her part, Holmes was selected as the league’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2009. The 20-win season marked the first by the program since 1996, when UC Davis was a member of the Division II non-scholarship Northern California Athletic Conference.

Holmes guided the Aggies to 16-13 season last year, helping to solidify the program as a legitimate foe in the tough league.

Holmes has also made efforts the advance her program outside the championship season. Off the court, she actively seeks to engage the Davis vicinity in Aggie volleyball. Competitively, she runs a strong spring practice season. In May 2009, the Aggies – although only seven players deep – captured the four-person division of the Big West Conference Beach Volleyball tournament.

Holmes arrived at UC Davis after serving as the No. 1 assistant for Ohio State from 2002 through 2007. She was involved in all aspects of the Buckeye program, including on-court coaching, player development, recruiting, scouting, strength and conditioning, travel, public relations and academic monitoring.

In her six seasons at OSU, Holmes coached four American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Americans, most notably 2004 AVCA Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year Stacey Gordon. During that

span, Ohio State compiled a 122-65 overall record and made four NCAA tournament appearances. Additionally, Holmes’ recruiting efforts have resulted in nationally ranked freshman classes in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Before her arrival in Columbus, Holmes spent five years at South-west Missouri State (now known as Missouri State) as the top assistant coach. In her tenure with the Bears, she helped transform the program from an 18-14 record in 1997 to a 25-5 ledger in 2001. Off the court, Holmes’ role as academic coordinator oversaw the team’s grade-point average rise from 3.18 in her first season to a 3.42 in 2001-02. Her skills in recruiting brought in the school’s first-ever AVCA All-America honoree and a Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year. Addition-ally, Holmes served on the board of directors for Club Bear Volleyball, a youth development program.

Holmes previously served one year as head women’s coach for Evangel University in Springfield, Mo.; and a season as the head men’s coach at her alma mater of Bethany University. She graduated summa cum laude from Bethany in 1994, earning a B.A. degree in social science. Holmes also is completing her Master of Divinity from the Assembly of God Theological Seminary in Springfield.

Holmes’ arrival at UC Davis also served as a homecoming of sorts. She and her family resided in Davis until relocating to nearby Citrus Heights when she reached middle school.

“Look up and down the coastline of California, and there are not a lot of college-town communities. Then you look at UC Davis and you find that atmosphere,” Holmes said. “It is a great academic institution in a desirable place for young people. I just think there is so much success that can happen here.”

Holmes played club volleyball for Sacramento State head coach Debby Colberg, then spent three years (one as a redshirt) in the Hornet program from 1989 to 1991. She then completed her career at Bethany, serving as team captain in the 1992 and 1993 seasons. As a senior, Holmes led all NAIA players in kills per game and hitting percentage, earning All-Region and All-America honors from the AVCA.

Former U.S. National Team member and Pacific All-American Addie Hauschild-Willis enters her sixth season with the Aggie women’s vol-leyball program in 2011. She is involved in all aspects of the program, including the role of recruiting coordinator.

She arrived at UC Davis by way of the Golden Bear Volleyball Club in Berkeley, Calif., where she served one year as an assistant coach. Hauschild-Willis previously served as head coach at the Colorado Springs School from 2003 to 2004.

Although a middle blocker as a collegiate player, Hauschild-Willis earned a spot as a libero on the U.S. National Team in 2002. In addition to her two-year stint with Team USA, she also played for the Minnesota Chill of the U.S. Professional Volleyball League, earning Libero of the Year honors in 2001. Hauschild-Willis has since retained her ties with USA Volleyball, serving on staffs for Youth and Junior National Team camps and as a training coach at the National Team open tryout in Colorado Springs.

Originally from Sacramento, Calif. and Hiram Johnson High School, Hauschild-Willis enjoyed an outstanding career at Pacific before embark-ing on her professional and National Team career. She earned first-team AVCA All-Region and All-Big West Conference honors in 1996 and 1997, after capturing second-team nods as a sophomore in 1995.

Hauschild-Willis also earned Big West Freshman of the Year recog-nition in 1994, the same season Volleyball Monthly named her to its All-America squad. She finished her Tiger career with 955 kills, a .304 hitting average, 116 aces, 1003 digs and 505 blocks. Through 2005, Hauschild-Willis continues to rank among Pacific’s all-time top 10 in hitting percentage and total blocks. She earned her B.A. degree in sports sciences from Pacific in 1998.

In 2010, Hauschild-Willis’ collegiate career was honored with her induction into the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame.

Most recently an assistant at San Francisco State, Chris Webb joined the Aggie women’s volleyball staff in June of 2010. He assists in all aspects of coaching, most notably contributing technical expertise in implementing a video and statistical program. Webb also will direct the team’s summer camps and assist Addie Hauschild-Willis in recruiting. On the court, he works with the team’s serving and outside hitters.

Webb previously held the post as S.F. State’s top assistant since the start of the 2008 season. With the Gators, he served as the program’s primary recruiting coordinator and strength coach, while working mostly with team defense, passing and middle attackers on the court.

Webb’s arrival to the Aggie program marks a return to Big West Con-ference volleyball. Prior to his stint in San Francisco, he was on the UC Santa Barbara staff in 2007, handling the Gauchos’ volleyball operations. Webb previously served as an administrative assistant at Saint Mary’s in 2005 and 2006, during which he also handled travel for the entire Gael athletics department.

Originally from Guam, Webb earned his undergraduate degrees in Spanish and business administration in 1997 from Northern Arizona. As an outside hitter, he helped the Lumberjacks’ club team to a ninth-place finish at the 1993 national tournament, and served as a team captain for a USVBA Men’s `A’ state-champion team in the Cactus Region in 1992 and 1994. Outdoors, he held a membership with the Arizona Outdoor Volleyball Association and captured the Arizona King of the Beach title in 1994. Webb also played internationally for clubs in Bolivia and Holland.

Webb began his coaching career in 2002, heading the Diablo Valley and Odyssey volleyball clubs in Walnut Creek, leading both boys’ and girls’ teams to region championships. More recently, he has served on the club staffs for Sports Shack (2007), Santa Barbara VBC (2008), San Francisco Juniors (2009) and with Gold Medal Squared clinics (2006 and 2009).

THIS IS

ACADEMICSUC Davis comprises three colleges (Agricultural

& Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Letters & Science), five professional schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine) plus the Division of Biological Sciences.

With 103 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate programs, the university offers the most expansive and diverse range of academics among any of the University of California campuses. Additionally, students also have the opportunity to combine majors or customize their field of study by creating an individual major.

For those interested in graduate degrees – whether it be a master’s degree or a doctorate – UC Davis offers advising services to help students craft their education toward those goals. An estimated 86 percent of UC Davis students applying to graduate schools earn acceptance to either their first or second choices.

COMMUNITYWith a population of approximately 60 thousand,

Davis is widely known for being a safe, active and so-cially innovative community.

The downtown area boasts a multitude of specialty shops, restaurants, theaters and art galleries; while the city’s numerous parks offer recreational opportunities for active students.

ACTIVITIESOn campus, UC Davis students can rally around

the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, frater-nities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government.

For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue.

In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the sur-rounding communities.

GETTING AROUNDNestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city

of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sac-ramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean’s top beaches.

Within Davis and its neighboring towns, both Yolobus and the student-operated Unitrans bus systems offer free transportation to registered undergraduates.

The town boasts more bicycles per capita than any other city in the nation. More than 50 miles of bike paths make the entire town conducive to both riders and pedestrians.

www.ucdavis.edu

UC Davis offers more than 100 undergraduate majors – the widest variety of any University of California campus.

CAMPUS LEADERSHIP

Linda Katehi became the sixth chancellor of the Uni-versity of California, Davis, on August 17, 2009. As chief executive officer, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission.

Chancellor Katehi (kah-TAY-hee) also holds UC Davis faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she chairs the President’s Com-mittee for the National Medal of Science and is chair of the Secretary of Commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is a fellow and board member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of many other national boards and committees.

Previously, Chancellor Katehi served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Il-linois at Urbana-Champaign; the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University; and associate dean for academic affairs and graduate education in the College of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and

computer science at the University of Michigan. Since her early years as a faculty member, Chancellor

Katehi has focused on expanding research opportunities for undergraduates and improving the education and profes-sional experience of graduate students, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups. She has mentored more than 70 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students in electrical and computer engineering. Twenty-one of the 42 doctoral students who graduated under her supervision have become faculty members in research universities in the United States and abroad.

Her work in electronic circuit design has led to numer-ous national and international awards both as a technical leader and educator, 16 U.S. patents, and an additional six U.S. patent applications. She is the author or co-author of 10 book chapters and about 600 refereed publications in journals and symposia proceedings.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineer-ing from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1977, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

LINDA KATEHI UC Davis Chancellor

Fred Wood assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on August 1, 2007. Dr. Wood oversees pro-grams and services that enhance the academic and personal development of students, including intercollegiate athletics. He also provides administrative leadership to a Division of over 50 student support programs and to a team of over 800 staff members. In addition, he manages a budget of over 30 million dollars. He advises the Chancellor on mat-ters relating to students, enrollment, access, retention, and campus climate.

Wood earned his bachelor’s and Ph.D. from UC Davis in Chemistry in 1980 and 1984. Soon after graduating, he began his faculty appointment in Chemistry and also served the College of Letters and Science as the Associate Dean, a position he held for 13 years. Most recently he served as the Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies and Interim Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. He is a 2003 graduate of the Harvard University Executive Leadership and Management Institute, and also a graduate of the University of California Management Institute.

ness Officers. He also serves on the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors at UC Davis, as well as over twenty different committees and councils on and off campus.

Several priorities he is focusing on in Student Affairs include building bridges within Student Affairs and with academic affairs; increasing the diversity of our student population by reaching out to students who are disadvan-taged and underrepresented; recruitment and admissions; increasing the number of students transferring to UC Davis from community colleges and helping with their transition; develop an inclusive community for all of our students; work to help new students effectively navigate the university; im-prove retention and graduation; improve accountability and transparency; improve student health; increase fundraising efforts to help support our units and their needs; maintaining affordability for students to attend college; and keeping up with the latest technology to provide our staff, faculty and students with the most up to date and accurate information.

Dr. Wood continues to teach undergraduate students while serving in his administrative role and maintaining a focus on continually improving the services available to undergraduate and graduate students.

Recognized in 1999 as “Softball Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association, La Rue Field hosted five NCAA West Region Softball Champion-ships in the past decade. Recent additions include bat-ting cages, covered dugouts and improved press areas.

The former Lower Hickey Gym, the first home of women’s athletics in the post-Title IX era, was con-verted to a first-class practice facility for the Aggie gymnastics team in 2005.

The Ted & Rand Schaal Aquatics Center hosted its first event in January of 2004. The complex features an Olympic-sized pool, locker rooms,

team rooms, office space and permanent seating for approximately 500 spectators. The aquatics center will allow UC Davis to host champion-

Both Aggie Stadium (left), the home of soc-cer, and the James & Ann Dobbins Baseball Complex (below) were the result of volunteer efforts dating back to the mid-1980s.

UC Davis student-athletes welcomed the expanded weight room, located inside Toomey Field. In addi-tion to nearly tripling in size the previous facility, the upgrade also included all new equipment, restrooms and office space.

Built in the late 1940s, Toomey Field has hosted numer-ous championship events for football, track & field and lacrosse. During the 2000 Olympic Trials, standouts Marion Jones and Michael Johnson used the Woody Wil-son Track as a practice facility.

SERVING THE UC DAVIS STUDENT-ATHLETE

STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMIC SERVICES204/208 Hickey Gym • (530) 752-3259

UC Davis ranks among the leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and Academic All-District/America honorees, and has claimed a record three winners of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Student-Athlete Academic Services deserves much of the credit for these accomplishments.

The office started in 1988 with a single staff member serving as a centralized resource for academic advising, eligiblity information and campus referrals. The office has since expanded to include additional academic advisors, an athletic aid coordinator, an as-sistant eligibility coordinator and an administrative assistant. It is headed by Nona Richardson, senior as-sociate director of athletics.

The Student-Athlete Academic Services office provides a range of services to student-athletes on all 26 intercollegiate athletics teams, including assistance with course and major selection as well as interpretation and clarification of eligibility rules and issues.

UC Davis student-athletes typically have a mini-mum of three academic advisors: an athletic academic advisor assigned by sport, a college advisor, and a major advisor (if the student has a declared major). Although appointments with the athletic academic advisors are not mandatory at UC Davis, student-athletes might choose to see their athletic academic advisor for issues including:

Known collectively as “The Healer of Champions”, the UC Davis athletic training staff comprises five full-time certified athletic trainers, a full-time physical therapist/certified athletic trainer and approximately 24 student athletic trainers. Together, they are responsible for providing medical care to the 800-plus student-athletes that compose UC Davis’ 26 varsity teams.

The student athletic trainers serve two to three years with the program, logging in more than 1,500

hours and gaining valuable clinical education in a hands-on environment. The internship is ideal for any student interested in a graduate program in ath-letic training, as well as any medical or allied medical profession.

The ARC Pavilion training room contains exten-sive resources and equipment for the rehabilitation of injured athletes. The staff physical therapist is head-quartered there as well.
