The Western Michigan University softball program is under the direction of 10th-year head coach Kathy Leitke. Her decade-long run as head coach of the program makes her the second-longest tenured coach in program history, second behind only WMU Athletic Hall of Famer Kim Worden (13 seasons). The 2011 campaign will mark Leitke’s 11th in Kalamazoo.

In 2009 she surpassed the 200 win mark at Western Michigan University and amassed at least 20 wins for the eighth-straight time in nine seasons at the helm of the Broncos, advancing all the way to the MAC Tournament title game for the second time in four years. WMU had three all-conference selections with Lexi Jager and Meredith Whitney earning First Team All-MAC and Brittney Reist earning Second Team All-MAC in 2009. Whitney was also named MAC Freshman of the Year, the second Bronco to ever earn that honor.

The Broncos saw slugger Jager, also named First Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Great Lakes Region, break the single-season and career home run records in 2009 as Broncos earned Mid-American Con-ference Player/Pitcher of the Week honors five times. Western Michigan won at least 16 conference games for the fourth time under Leitke and finished second in the MAC West Division for the four time as well, second year in a row. WMU ended the regular season with the second-best conference record in the MAC and earned a spot in the MAC Tournament title game for the sixth time ever and second time since 2006.

In 2008 Leitke reached two significant milestones in her career. On April 25, she reached the 500th coaching victory of her career with a 13-3 win over Akron. Two weeks earlier, Leitke reached the 100-win mark in Mid-American Conference games with a 7-2 victory over Buffalo. Leitke and associate head coach Jamie Spitale came to Kalamazoo in 2001.

Since her arrival from the junior college ranks, Leitke has developed the Bronco program into one of the top competitors, not only in the MAC, but in the region as well.

WMU has surpassed the 30-win plateau in three of the last six seasons, a feat that hadn’t been ac-complished in nearly a decade. The Broncos’ current run of seven-consecutive winning MAC records has been accomplished only one other time in program history (1977-84). Fran Ebert’s Broncos accom-plished the feat in eight seasons as there was only a conference tournament during the 1982 campaign.

Western Michigan reached 20 wins for the eighth time in nine seasons under Leitke in 2009, finishing the year 25-22 and 16-6 in the MAC. The Broncos boasted two first team All-MAC selections in Becky Bartosz and Kyla Sullivan and the program’s second MAC All-Freshman Team selection in three years with Lexi Jager. Jager was also named second team All-MAC.

WMU is also one of only two programs to advance to the MAC Tournament in each of the last seven opportunities.

WMU notched another 20-win season in 2007 after claiming its third regular season title in 2006, going 31-13 and 18-4 in the MAC, during the regular season. The Broncos earned the top seed in the postsea-son tournament in 2006, falling in the championship game. Leitke was named MAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her tenure in Kalamazoo. She became the second coach ever to win the award (Kim Worden, 1997) and the only WMU softball coach to win it outright.

Then junior Kristi Strange led the nation in doubles per game (0.48) in 2006, while also setting the team and conference marks for doubles in a season. Under Leitke’s tutelage, then junior Amanda Heckaman broke the school record for RBI in a game with seven. This feat was matched by Becky Bartosz against

Illinois-Chicago during the 2007 campaign.

The Broncos finished second in the West Division for the second-straight year in 2005, earning yet another appearance in the league’s postseason event. WMU finished 14-9 in league action and had a pair of student-athletes tabbed to the First Team All-MAC squad.

The 2004 season included another deep run into the conference tourney and a second-place finish in the West Division. The all-conference rosters were full of Bronco players, including the MAC Freshman of the Year (Kristi Strange).

The 30-win campaign in 2003 was highlighted by a MAC West Division title and an appearance in the NCAA Championship. The Broncos posted a perfect 3-0 record in the league tourney en route to the title and earned the MAC’s automatic post-season bid.

The 2002 Bronco squad improved its win total by nine games from the previous year and advanced to the six-team Mid-American Conference Tourna-ment for the first time since 1997. WMU posted a winning league slate and posted the most overall wins in several seasons. The roster also featured the program’s first .300 hitter and all-league se-lections since 1999.

Since her arrival in the spring of 2000, Leitke has overseen upgrades in both facilities and the team schedule. In each of the past four years, WMU has played some of the top squads in the nation during its spring trip.

Leitke, who arrived in Kalamazoo from nearby Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, is the program’s fourth head coach in its 25-year history.

At LMC, Leitke guided the Indians to a 312-167 (.651) record in nine seasons, including a National Ju-nior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship in 1993. Leitke’s tenure also produced six Western Conference titles, five Region XII championships and five national tournament appearances.

Highly respected in her profession, Leitke was named NJCAA and National Fastpitch Coaches Associa-tion (NFCA) Coach of the Year in 1993. She was tabbed the regional coach of the year five times, league coach of the year on four occasions and NFCA East Region Coach of the Year three times.

In 1999, both Leitke and current Bronco associate head coach Jamie Spitale were selected to coach a team of junior college all-stars in Canada. The team competed against world-ranked teams which participated in the 2000 Olympics.

Prior to taking over the head coaching post at LMC in 1991, Leitke served as both an assistant coach (1988-91, 1985-87) and assistant director of intercollegiate athletics (1988-91) at the school.

In 1991, Leitke was also named the college’s director of athletics. While serving as an assistant, the Indians claimed five league titles, four region championships and made four national tournament ap-pearances.

Leitke served as an assistant coach for the Broncos in 1988 under head coach Kim Worden.

After beginning her collegiate studies at Lake Michigan College (1980-83), where she was a two-time All-American, Leitke earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1985.

LINDSEYTRUITTSTUDENT MANAGERThird Season

Lindsey Truitt is in her third season with the softball program. She serves as the student manager, assists with scorekeeping and videotaping du-ties during all games. Her other duties include working with the softball office and equipment room.

Lindsey is currently a student in Lee’s Honor College and is majoring in accounting with a 4.0 GPA. She is the daughter of Kent and Judy Truitt.

Jim, father of associate head coach Jamie Spitale, rejoins the Bronco coaching staff in 2011 to assist with hitting instruction and work with the outfield. He brings 39 years of coaching experience to the program.

Mandarino has coached baseball, basketball, football and softball at the high school level. He has also refereed high school basketball for 32 years and serves as an umpire for high school softball. Professionally, he has been employed at IM Power for 39 years.

Jim has been married to his wife Beth, an art director for Perry Ballard Incorporated for 40 years. He has four grown children, three sons and one daughter, two of whom attended Western Michigan University (Chad and Josh) and one who played baseball at WMU (Josh). He and his wife also have seven grandchildren.

Jamie Spitale (formerly Mandarino), who arrived with head coach Kathy Leitke in Kalamazoo for the 2001 season, was promoted to associate head coach on July 18, 2005 and completed her 10th hear with the program in 2010. The St. Joseph, Mich., native completed a standout career as a player under Leitke at Lake Michigan College before returning to the school in 1997 as an assistant coach.

At WMU, Spitale focuses her efforts on recruiting and team development while also working closely with the Bronco pitchers, catchers and infielders. The 2010 season saw newcomer Di-ana Patterson get her feet wet in the circle while Meredith Whitney became only the fifth Bronco to reach 300 strikeouts in program history.

It was another banner year for the Bronco pitching staff led by 2009 MAC Freshman of the Year Meredith Whitney. Whitney became the first Bronco pitcher in program history to earn the award and was also named First Team All-MAC, a member of the MAC All-Freshman Team and the MAC All-Tournament Team. She finished her rookie campaign with 196 strikeouts, the third most in a single-season at WMU.

Her star pupil in 2007 and 2008 was Kyla Sullivan. The Saugus, Calif., native earned Second Team All-MAC and All-NFCA Great Lakes Region as a junior and improved to First Team All-MAC during her senior campaign. Sullivan combined with Kelli Zache for the program’s first no-hitter since 2006 with a five-inning no-no against Northern Illinois on April 5, 2008.

The Bronco pitching staff was highlighted by Krysten Shumaker in 2006. Shumaker ranked 22nd in the nation in ERA (1.10), 27th in strikeouts per game (9.1) and fifth in saves (5). She also eclipsed the WMU single season strike out mark (239) previously held by Laura Stewart, who held the mark at 237 in 2004 under Spitale’s tutelage.

Under Spitale’s guidance, the Bronco pitching staff has shown marked improvement and featured all-conference performers in each of the last six seasons: Laura Stewart (2003 and

2004), Jaymie Voss (2004), Tricia VanDerSlik (2005), Shumaker (2006) and Sullivan (2007 and 2008).

As an assistant at LMC (1997-2000), Spitale helped numerous players develop into nation-ally recognized student-athletes, including three All-America selections. Nine players earned all-conference accolades, four were named to the all-state team and four gar-nered all-region honors during her tenure.

While at LMC, Spitale also served as the de-partment’s assistant athletic director, focus-

ing her efforts on academics. During her tenure, 93 percent of the second-year students trans-ferred to a four-year school and 41 athletes were named academic all-league.

The school had five student-athletes garner Academic All-America honors and 39 were named to the Academic “A” Team during the time Spitale was directing the program’s academic suc-cess.

An Academic All-American selection as a player, the pitching standout helped lead LMC to the national championship in 1993. She pitched a shutout in the semifinal game of that title run, teaming up with former assistant coach Wendy Swinehart to claim the top spot in the nation.

During her playing career, Spitale played on two regional championship squads, earned all-conference, all-region and all-state honors and was a second team All-America honoree.

In 2003, Spitale was inducted into the St. Joseph’s High School Hall of Fame for her efforts on the softball field.

Spitale was married to Joe (Spitale) on Nov. 25, 2006 and the couple welcomed their first child, Haley (2), on May 30, 2007. Two of Spitale’s three siblings attended and graduated from Western Michigan University.

SOFTBALLFACIL

ITIES

The Western Michigan University softball program plays all of its home games at Ebert Field, conveniently located on campus in near prox-imity to all of the WMU athletic facilities.

The complex was renovated during the summer and fall of 2005 to enhance the experience of the fans as well as provide a quality venue for the Broncos. The renovation included the installation of stadium bleachers and a state-of-the-art press box, equipped with a separate video tower located high above the press box. A concessions stand with public facilities was also constructed as a part of the renovations. The now 500-seat stadium also went through changes in 2000 and 2001. The parking lot was expanded to accommodate both baseball and softball. A fence surrounding the perimeter of the field was added and wind screens were installed on the outfield fence to help com-bat the windy conditions associated with the park.

With Ebert Field earning the reputation as a pitchers’ field, the entire fenceline was moved in after the 2000 season. Straightaway center is now 220’ and both corners measure out at 200’. Prior to reconstruction, left field did have the shortest porch at 219’, while center was 225’ and right measured 226’.

Prior to the work being completed, both the home and visitor dugouts were remodeled and a new scoreboard was installed. The complex also contains a pair of batting cages as well as a bullpen and storage area.

The field was named after the late WMU coach and professor Fran Ebert (1930-2008). A se-lection to the WMU Athletic Hall of Fame, Ebert began the softball program at Western Michi-gan in 1976 and went on to compile an overall record of 270-116-1 in 10 seasons. She was named Woman of the Year by the Varsity “W’ Club in 2000. Ebert led the Broncos to a pair of AIAW College World Series appearances (1980-81) and one trip to the NCAA College World Series (1982). In 2000, Ebert was one of the three indviduals inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Hall of Fame at the nation-al convention. In 1985, Western Michigan’s Board of Trustees approved a recommendation to name the school’s diamond in her honor and it was dedicated on June 29 of that year.

Fran Ebert, the namesake for the Broncos’ home field, passed away on Nov. 7, 2008 at the age of 78.

“She was the epitome of a coach,” said Chris-tine Hoyles, an associate AD at WMU from 1976-88. “Her teams competed with excel-lence and civility.
