WelcomeAs Pembrokeshire College developed and adapted to the changing economic climate throughout 2011/12, one thing remained unchanged – the College’s firm belief in the value that education and training give to the individual, to the economy and to society.

The College continued to be recognised as a leader in the field of further education within Wales as we enhanced the student experience through our investment in resources, staff and links built with employers.

With the Welsh Government agenda focused on transformation the College was committed to developing relationships and partnerships in order that our students received the best education for their particular career choice. Through strong collaboration we are ensuring that the skills needs of employers are met, that communities benefit from collective effort, and that we achieve best value for the ‘Welsh pound’. Underpinning this must inevitably be a drive to secure the highest possible quality to give students the best possible opportunities.Sharron Lusher, Principal.

The sweet smell of successThe sweet smell of success was in the air for beauty and complementary therapy students at Pembrokeshire College as they wiped the board at the WorldSkills regional heats, held at Bridgend College. The students came away with all six medals in the aromatherapy and reflexology competitions as well as first and second place in beauty therapy and nail art. Up against competitors from colleges across England and Wales, judges commented on the exceptionally high standard of the skills and knowledge being displayed. Outshining the competition, the judges awarded all sixmedals to competitors from Pembrokeshire College.

Tomorrow’s heroes are our local heroesElite Army prep students from Pembrokeshire College gave their all when they competed at the Public Services National Competition held at Brooklands College.

Competition was stiff, with a total of 21 colleges competing from all over the UK for this coveted championship. The College team came away with three second places and one third. College lecturer Andy Desborough commented: “Brooklands College students had access to on-site army training facilities, which were also used by surrounding colleges for pre-competition training. The opposing teams also used substitutes, so to put this all into some context, our students were exceptional.”

Boatbuilders build for the QueenPembrokeshire College boatbuilding students played their part in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations after helping to build the impressive 94ft royal barge ‘Gloriana’.

Commissioned especially for the Jubilee, the Gloriana, powered by 18 oarsmen, led a pageant of more than 1,000 boats and 20,000 people down the River Thames from Wandsworth to Tower Bridge.

David, who attended MITEC from 2008 to 2010 commented: “The boatbuilding course at MITEC is without doubt the best thing I have ever done. The course was a life transforming experience, which has enabled me to get involved in projects such as building the Gloriana for the Queen’s Jubilee.”

Boatbuilders show they’re worldclassFour boatbuilding students (photo page 5) from Pembrokeshire College’s MITEC school of Boatbuilding and Marine Engineering showcased their skills at the world’s largest international skills competition and careers event - WorldSkills London 2011.

The College team used traditional and modern techniques including spar-shaping (shaping wooden oars) and composite moulding to promote career opportunities in boatbuilding and marine engineering. Richard Davies-Scourfield, head of boatbuilding, attended the event and said: “This event offered a fantastic opportunity for us to share our skills with a wide audience and to give youngsters the chance to have a taste of careers they may not have previously considered.”

This high profile event was visited by over 100,000 British school children, and offered students from all over the world the opportunity to compete and showcase their skills and crafts.

Award for female builder Kaycee Blake picked up a construction award for most improved student of the year and commented: “I started college on the army prep course but decided to swap to brickwork. My dad thinks I’m a tomboy, so it wasn’t a shock to my parents when I enrolled. I’m loving the course and I’m proud of my achievements so far. I’m hoping to progress to levels two and three and would someday like to build my own house!”

Welding apprentices take part in SkillWeld 2012Pembrokeshire College’s MITEC centre was host to the regional semi-final for the UK SkillWeld competition 2012 – the competition run by the Welding Institute to find Britain’s most talented trainee welders.

Three trainee welding apprentices represented South Wales in the competition, testing their skills by completing a series of different weld tests. All competitors were Pembrokeshire College apprentices after they achieved the four top scores in the passive heats held in December beating apprentices from Neath Port Talbot College, Coleg Sir Gar and Swansea College.

New talent in the pipelineSchool children and apprentices from around the county worked with top engineers from major employers as part of the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) initiative – a scheme to promote careers in engineering.

The teams made use of Pembrokeshire College’s engineering facilities as they worked towards completing their projects. STEM Cymru representative Robert Elward said: “This is the first time we have held this event in Pembrokeshire College, having previously used various university departments. Once we had seen the engineering facilities at the College we were delighted to be able to bring our teams to the engineering wing to work on their projects.”

Military Wives website takes on student’s logoPembrokeshire College student Kerry Thomas won a competition to design a logo for a new recruitment website aimed at the spouses of members of the military.

The new website ‘recuitforspouses.co.uk’ is the brainchild of former Pembrokeshire College student, Heledd Kendrick, from Fishguard, herself an army wife. “Kerry has the satisfaction of seeing one of his designs going live on our website and being used to promote the site on Facebook and Twitter. I was really impressed with the standard of work and the profes-sionalism shown,” said Heledd.

ty Charity Coffee ShopPembrokeshire College teamed up with local charity, Paul Sartori, to roll out an employment scheme aimed at helping young people to gain skills and experience in the customer service and hospitality industry.

Six young people, who were out of work, signed up for the 13-week ‘Steps to Employment’ work-based learning programme being run by the College. During the programme the students worked towards their customer service qualification and were helped to find jobs in local businesses.

“It’s a simple activity, but it’s so important to these people. They will be involved in every aspect of customer service and housekeeping.

“It’s exciting because it’s a full-time training facility, which is a realistic environment without being too formal”, said Wendy Weber, Director of Workforce Skills at the College.

Valero continues to support the Sports AcademyPembrokeshire College’s sports people continued to flourish throughout 2011/12, thanks to the support of a dedicated team of sports professionals, including ex international rugby player and Sports Academy co-ordinator Kevin Hopkins.
