learning for a lifetime

With a deep commitment to values, Hillel students are learning to become philanthropists.

A group of 10 Upper School students raised $2,500 this year through Project ROPE, a national student project developed and led by RAVSAK that expands Jewish youth philanthropy. Hillel was one of three schools in the country selected to participate.

“I really loved the process. It’s very gratifying to see where our eff orts were going,” said rising senior Alex Carciente, president of Project ROPE at Hillel. He said it wasn’t just selling and asking for donations; it was developing and implementing fundraising initiatives with checks and balances.

Carciente said 70 percent of the funds raised will benefi t Dress for Success Miami, an organization that provides clothing and skills to help people fi nd jobs. Th e students selected the organization after research and a visit. Th e remaining portion will go to Israel’s Association for Ethiopian Jews which helps Ethiopian Jews in Israel fi nd jobs.

“It’s a great experience not only to learn about making philanthropic decisions but also to learn about our own values along the way,” Carciente said.

Hillel Unveils 2011-2012 Programs, LeadershipAn innovative leadership model and other

enhancements refl ecting Hillel’s child-centered philosophy were unveiled by Head of School Rabbi Pinchos Hecht at the 2011 Annual Meeting. Speaking directly to parent survey feedback, the updates focus on the students, designed to maximize and enrich learning.

Progressive plans are rooted in traditional values. “Our new administrative structure applies the approach parents take everyday at home,” Hecht explained. “Families build plans in ways that put daughters and sons fi rst – as the center, the heart of it all. And it’s exactly what we’re gearing up for at Hillel, really setting the standard for Jewish education.”

It’s with this philosophy in mind that the educational administrative structure has evolved, pairing longtime Hillel dedication with master teaching. It is built upon collaboration, investment in students and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Illustrated by concentric circles, students stand at the center of Hillel’s organizational structure.

Hillel is able to introduce this new generation of its model because it extends from a rich history built by educators over the years.

While priorities always were on learning, in this next stage of growth Hillel is going even further, wrapping all resources around the children as the core. Th e focus is the family-school relationship empowering children to succeed as students.

Th e purpose of this unique design is to prepare children as Jews with skills, tools and values for the ever-evolving world, not only college. Th is global vision calls for superior programs, technologies and strong relationships. As Florida’s fi rst Jewish International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School, Hillel is applying this style to foster an environment of collaboration throughout the four pillars that

defi ne the Hillel Experience: Academics, Judaics, Co-Curricular and Community.

While traveling through Israel on the annual Grade 9 trip last month, Rabbi Josh Spodek and students maintained a daily blog describing the adventure, emotions and excitement of each day. A group stayed in Israel through Shavout with Rabbi Chaim Albert. On day

nine of the 16-day trip, they visited Chevron and the Kotel. Here is a glimpse of what students experienced.

“Our students spent the day visiting historic sites in and around Jerusalem that played important parts in this 2000 year unfolding drama. From Kever Rachel to Kfar Etzion to Chevron and the Cave of our Forefathers and Foremothers, our students were given the opportunity to pray at each of these holy sites, to reflect and to learn about the sacrifices and dedication of our ancestors to this land and to our people.

No words can accurately describe the intense feeling and emotions that were on display in Chevron as our students individually and then collectively prayed at the graves of Avraham, Sarah, Rivka, Yaakov and Leah. The spontaneous dancing that erupted after our Mincha prayer was truly unforgettable. The pride I felt watching our students dance, sing, cry and pray was immense.

The best was yet to come. After dinner on Ben Yehudah we joined hundreds, if not thousands, of Jewish youth from around the country on a walk/march to the Old City and the Kotel. Waving flags, singing and dancing our students proudly proclaimed their love and true patriotic feelings for our country and for Jerusalem, in particular.

The excitement and anticipation grew as we neared the walls of the Old City, entered through Jaffa Gate, walked through the Rova/Jewish Quarter and slowly made our way to the Kotel. One by one, many of our students who were seeing the Kotel for the first time broke down in tears and could not contain their intense emotions and feelings.”

DVAR TORAHBy Rabbi Chaim AlbertRabbinic Head

Our fifth Jewish value is Ruach, or spirit, culminating this column about Hillel’s five core values. The center of Jewish spirituality was the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, the Beit Hamikdash.

A question commonly is asked about why a ramp led to the Mizbeach, or Altar, instead of a standard staircase. One beautiful approach is that the Temple is teaching us the fundamental lesson of spirituality. There are only two directions: either one is growing (going up the ramp) or one is diminishing (going down the ramp). Remaining the same (resting on one single step) is not possible. This message is illustrated by a ramp on which remaining still is not an option. At Hillel, where you come from is not the focus; rather we empower each and every student to grow and thrive in his or her connection with Hashem.

May we enjoy a wonderful summer followed by an exciting new school year characterized by tremendous spiritual growth.

Mazel tov to students in PK4 who performed in celebration of completing their year of learning and being ready to move on to Kindergarten. Last month students sang a collection of songs before joining their families to view a display of their artwork. PK4 teachers Tali Barhai and Jaime Waksman, Carmi Harari and Joanna Slochowski, and Zena Parker-Zukowsky and Marcela Psevoznik, partnered with music teacher Dionne Lockett to lead the students in their performance.

In their masterful publication, “Making the case for schools of the future,” the National Association of Independent schools (NAIS) Commission lays out the blueprint for schools willing to challenge themselves to prepare students for 2020 and not for 1960.

This blueprint calls for a re-ordering of priorities and educational focus to equip our students with the skills and capacities they

will need to succeed and lead in the future. Our children are the first generation of Digital Natives, born

into a new and fast-paced culture where the only constant is change. Those of us who are digital immigrants, coming later in life into their world, have two choices. We can choose to adapt, even as our children lead us, or we can choose to focus on and reminisce on, “how good things used to be.” At Hillel we have but one choice - to adapt.

The issue is less about the technology itself and more about the new mindset of our students and children.

For them, knowledge is open, collaborative, accessible and experienced through multimedia. It is not individually owned, controlled, top-down or generally presented in text.

Our children absorb their information and learning from multiple sources. They prefer multi-tasking, collaborative projects and learning that is both serious and fun at the same time.

Where we prefer information that is accessed in a linear and sequential fashion, our children prefer random access. They want learning that is relevant, useful and provides instant rewards. We see school as a place to learn, they see the world as a place to learn. We must ensure that our schools and program reflect their preferences even as we ensure that they are fully prepared for the future.

Our classrooms must be expanded to include exploration, discovery and experimentation if we are to be a school that prepares our children for the future. This summer we will be fleshing out our school’s strategic plan for the next five years. It will include these goals and much more. We will share with you the essential capacities for our school as we grow and adapt along with our children toward becoming a 21st century school. Wishing you a safe and restful summer.
