GOVERNOR JOE’S MESSAGE This is a very proud moment in the life of your District Governor. To have this opportunity to serve Rotary in this capacity is a little daunting to say the least. this opportunity to serve Rotary in this capacity is a little daunting to say the least. However, with a strong leadership team in place including District Chairs, Assistant Governor’s, and 61 Club Presidents I take on this position with confidence that we will be able to build on the past successes and make District 6330 even better.

President Kalyan Banerjee’s theme “REACH WITHIN TO EMBRACE HUMANITY” isn’t complex or hard to understand. When Rotarians get involved in local or international service projects, we aren’t motivated by money, power or recognition. Instead, our motivation comes from within; from the heart. As President Kalyan says, “look within yourselves, to understand that all of humanity has the same dreams, similar hopes, same aspirations and similar problems. In the year ahead, President Kalyan has three emphases in our Rotary Service; to strengthen our family, to continue what we do best, and to change whatever needs to be changed. He further states that “All of us in Rotary are looking to change the world, for why else would we be Rotarians? We believe that our world can be happier, healthier, and more peaceful. We believe that the future can and will be better than the past. We are idealists, and we bring our ideas to life through our Rotary Service”.My goals this year include the continued support of the Rotary Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund and support of the efforts to eradicate polio from the face of the earth! So here’s the question, “What is Rotary’s current membership?” Surprisingly, it is exactly the same it was 10 years ago, 1.2 million.

Clearly, Rotary does not have a recruitment problem. A quarter of a million new members per year is not too shabby. We have a retention problem. If our worldwide membership stays static year after year, it means that for every new Rotarian joining us, we lose another one. Clearly we have to do a better job of retaining experienced

Polio Wake-Up Across the Continent 2011Dear Club Presidents and Rotarians, Welcome to a new Rotary year! We are inviting you to take a leadership role in the Polio Awareness Initiative that got its start at the RI San Diego Institute with the Canadian 2011-2012 DGs.

The primary objective is to bring to the forefront the fact that Polio still exists and that Rotary is leading the charge in eradicating this dreaded disease.

The event will begin on World Polio Day, Monday October 24th 2011 and continue through the entire week. Continued on page 4

Governor Joe’s Message continued from page 1 eradicate polio from the face of the earth! The Annual Programs Fund supports so many wonderful programs such as Group Study Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholars, grants for international and local service projects just to name a few. And, we really are “THIS CLOSE” to the eradication of polio. Another goal of mine is to expand training within the District to strengthen the clubs and develop leaders at the District level. I encourage all Rotarians to take advantage of training opportunities such as Rotary Leadership Institute, Foundation Seminars and other training vehicles such as the District Assembly and District Conference. Again this year, membership recruitment plus a dedicated effort towards membership retention are a must if our clubs are to remain strong and vibrant. Don’t be shy about extending an invitation to someone to join Rotary and reach out to current members if they don’t seem to be engaged! This year, I will be introducing my Governor’s Challenge “Go for the Pure Gold” that rewards Rotarians for their efforts in supporting the Foundation, attracting new members and participating in District events along with several other areas focused on the Five Avenues of Service.

RI President Kalyan has two prominent awards that clubs can achieve: 1) The Presidential Citation that focuses on membership retention and growth and 2) the Changemaker award where the focus is on the five avenues of service. Support your club President toward accomplishing these goals and challenges.

Lastly, I look forward to my 61 official visits to not only bring the clubs up to date on what’s happening at the District and International level but to learn of the many great accomplishments that are happening at each and every one of the clubs. I look forward to a giant celebration on May 31 and June 1, 2, and 3rd at our District Conference in Frankenmuth, Michigan.Yours in Rotary,Joe ReynoldsDistrict Governor 2011-2012

District 6330 Says Welcome Home and Farewell at Central States Rotary Summer Conference By Don Moore, District Youth Exchange Chair

Since being formed in 1972, Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Program Inc. has had another successful Summer Conference in Grand Rapids, MI where 1223 Rotary Youth Exchange students, parents, and Rotarian volunteers gathered over the weekend of July 8th-10th, 2011. Students¸ parents, and Rotarians from District 6330 were there in force … all 134 of us!

All 18 Rotary districts which make up Central States had representatives present. Rotary President-Elect Sakuji Tanaka and his wife Kyoko were present and represented RI President Kalyan Banerjee. Central States Chairman, David Smith (D6310) and Conference Chair, PDG Bruce Goldsen (D6400) welcomed everyone at the opening ceremonies after a fantastic parade of flags which represented all the countries of students who were present at the conference. Besides President-Elect Tanaka, other keynote speakers included outgoing General Secretary of Rotary International, Ed Futa who gave some excellent advice to all of the students … our future Rotarians and peacekeepers.

Central States has eight (8) country correspondents who work on behalf of the Rotary Clubs in all 18 districts in obtaining “partners” with which to exchange each year. We are fortunate that 2 of the 8 correspondents are from District 6330 … John Stuart (London RC) looks after Asia-Pacific North countries, and Cathryn Buckley (Lions Head RC) looks after Latin American -2 countries which include Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Polio Wake-Up Across the Continent 2011continued from page 1During that week, Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs in Canada and the USA can do something/anything to raise

awareness for Polio – this could be a walk, run, proclamation, etc. The level of organization can differ from club to club. Some may just encourage their members to get out for a

walk on their own and record the activity in number of kms or miles, another might organize a marathon or spin-a-thon.........another might march from their Club to City Hall for a peaceful demonstration. Maybe it’s a “Purple Pinkie Project,” Pennies for Polio or other Polio Awareness activity that you already practice.

Each club is invited to participate in their own way and is given a chance to brag about their activities on a specially set-up Facebook Group page and be included in a You Tube video to follow. Please join the group, share ideas of what you will be doing, and then post your images at: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_158711824183179

We can garner a good amount of media coverage if Rotary clubs will participate en masse during this week. We would like to encourage you to foster this initiative in your own club and throughout the Family of Rotary in your area. We Are "This Close" to Ending Polio!Yours in Rotary Service,PDG Tanya F Wolff [email protected]: Polio Wake-up Across the Continent 2011

MemberTips continued from page 1Rotarians.

Looking closer to home, we had about 2,500 members in District 6330 a decade ago and we are down to about 2,000 today. We are shrinking by about 50 members per year. Governor Joe’s challenge to us this year is to grow by 100 members district-wide. If we are on a path to lose 50 Rotarians in our district we must really plan on recruiting 150 additional members district-wide to net 100. This is a TALL order.

Wouldn’t membership growth be easier if our clubs weren’t constantly trying to make up for members resigning? In theory, this is an easy task. Simply find out why our members quit then remedy the problems. In theory…

In practice it is difficult to figure out why members leave Rotary and sometimes even harder to address the real issues. Fortunately, we can offer you some help. Each area of the district has a trained membership specialist available to the club for consultation and resources. Your job is to invite him or her to your club to talk about strategy. If you don’t know who your membership rep is, check with your Assistant Governor. Also, check out the many resources available to you on the district website. Navigate to rotary6330.org and look for the link “Membership Corner” under the “Site Pages” section.

Next month we will look at the concepts of club membership committees and member survey tools. In the meantime, Get Your Ask in Gear!Dennis Dinsmore, PDGDistrict Membership [email protected]

Rotary Summer Conference continued from page 2District Governor Joe Reynolds and Linda attended the

conference and were energized by the level of energy these students displayed. In DG Joe’s words, “This is a great way to start my year as Governor!” The conference welcomes District Governors, DGEs, and DGNs each year and they have an opportunity to meet either the RI President or his representative. The conference also provides the students with sessions with their country correspondents as well as other students who have “been there”. Parents also have similar session where they can find answers to their many questions. Feedback from parents is very positive and they appreciate the opportunity to attend this weekend conference. Rebound parents are also invited to attend when their student returns home.

District 6330 had 22 Inbound students in 2010-11 and 24 Rebound students. For the 2011-12 exchange year, we have 25 Outbound students from 20 Rotary Clubs who are in this fantastic program. If your club is interested in participating in the 2011 OR 2012 inbound program, please contact Don Moore, District Chair at [email protected]. (519-881-7564). Also visit www.csrye.org .
