The (1950s)

Thanks to those of you who recently wrote in with news. Here’s who I heard from since the last class newsletter:

Gay Gilbert Anderson, G’55, and her husband James have retired and moved to Hermitage, Tenn., to be near their daughter and grandchildren.

John Fleming, G‘50, lives in Minneapolis, Kan., and owns Fancie Baux Companie. If you need a “fancy box for a fancy lady” call John at (785) 392-2500 or send him an email at jrf1717@gmail.com.

Joyce (Hadley) Grimm, G‘51, moved to Westminster, Colo.

John, G’50, and Lola (Lindamood) Struthers, FS’51, live in Clearwater, Kan., and are retired. They welcomed a great-granddaughter on Feb. 10, 2011.

Francis Spear G‘54, is ministering as a chaplain counselor at the Sedgwick County jail in Wichita.

Dr. Floyd H. Price, G’51, and Phyllis A. (Mcguire) Price, G’50, have moved into a retirement community in Newton, Kan.

Dr. Price retired in 1996 from Kansas State University and was awarded emeritus faculty status at that time.

Unfortunately, I also received notice of several of our classmates having passed away.

Alvin Kauffman, G’58, passed away last Nov. 14, 2010. He had been living in Fox Lake, Ill.

In January of 2011, Hal W. Hawkins, G’53, and Darrell J. Denney, G’58, both died. Hal was a retired US Navy Chaplain, and Darrell taught English as a second language.

Mary Emily (Perisho) Lilly, G’59; Dr. K. Stanley Gale, G’52; George W. Hirst, G’52; and Sybil A. (Marshall) Washburn, G’56, all passed away in February 2011.

Hubert J. Wiebe, G’52, died on March 14, 2011. He taught industrial arts at Friends University for 18 years.

Joslyn B. Shelton, G’58, passed away on April 27, 2011. He resided in Bristol, Tenn.

Eleanor H. Bell, G’50, and Max Hapner, G’52, both passed away in May 2011.

Once again, Wichita students at Friends University can tell the time by sound at the beginning of the hour and at each half hour.

After more than two years of silence, the Davis Administration Building clock tower bell received a much-needed repair and began ringing again June 23, 2011.

Funded by money set aside by the Student Government Association starting 2009, the repair included a digital device that bypasses the original gears, keeping the clock on time while preserving the historical components of the 80-year-old clock.

As an additional bonus, the digital component adjusts automatically for daylight saving time and standard time.

The project experienced a few setbacks, but fortunately, the clock tower repair cost around $8,000, which was less than the amount that SGA planned for in 2009.

Fall 2011 • The (1950s)

Leslie “Les” Davis, G’56, passed away Feb. 27, 2011. After he graduated from Friends University with his bachelor’s degree, he began his coaching career in 1956 in Grenola, Kan. For the next 50 years, he would coach in different high schools all throughout the state including Greeley, Wichita, Towanda and Sedan.

In 2001, Les was inducted into the Friends University Athletic Hall of Fame as a three-sport athlete having

played baseball, football and basketball during his college years. In 1961, he returned to Friends and worked for a year as the head baseball coach and assistant basketball coach.

After leaving Friends University, Les went on to become the second coach in Kansas high school history to win more than 300 football games. His basketball team in Sedan, Kan., holds the regular season winning streak record at 65 games. Additionally, Les claimed 512 baseball wins, one state championship, the state record 42-game winning streak, and a dozen consecutive appearances at the state baseball tournament. Other awards received included being named Coach of the Year for baseball in 1979, District #5 National Coach of the Year in 1981, and Area Football Coach of the Year in 1999-2000.

Knowing that it is because of former student athletes like Les Davis and others who have already been inducted into the Friends University Athletic Hall of Fame as well as those to come in the future, our Falcon athletics would not be where it is today.

Remembering Les Davis

Friends University established the Family of the Year Award in 2010 as a way to recognize the legacy of those families who:1. Have shown longevity in the number of years their family has attended Friends;2. Are able to document that multiple members of their family tree have attended Friends; and3. Have a history of dedicated service to the University.

The Alumni Office is pleased to announce that members of the Joseph and Olive Schoonover family tree have been named the 2011 Family of the Year. They will be recognized at halftime of the Sept. 24 home football game vs. the McPherson Bulldogs.

FAMILY of the YEARWe here in the Alumni Office thought that you, as a graduate of the College of Business, Arts, Sciences and Education, would like to know more about the current dean.

Dr. Peters earned a Master of Arts in theater arts from Baylor University and a Ph.D in theater and arts administration from Texas Tech University. He most recently served as associate dean of Academic Affairs and Research for the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. Prior to Wayne State, he was director of Wichita State University’s School of Performing Arts.

As President of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) since 2007, Dr. Peters also serves as ATHE’s representative to the Coalition for Theatre Education, a national coalition of arts organizations that brings together the leadership of all major membership organizations for teachers in K-12 and university educational theater.

Dr. Peters has directed more than 50 productions, including “Hamlet,” “The Cherry Orchard,” “The Glass Menagerie” and “Our Town.”

Dr. Peters lives in Andover, Kan., with his wife, Sandy, and their sons James and Matthew.

those who you remember from your time as a student as well as those who you interact with through work, church or social circles but had no idea they were also Friends alumni.
