The Problem
Too much paper
Too many manual processes
Too many data errors
Too much time spent

Mobile Barcode Scanning, RFID and Beyond
Background
Electronics have allowed companies to be more efficient for
many years
Transition to mobile collection devices in certain industries
and environments has been VERY slow
Due to horror storiess of bad implementations, cost, fear of
work force reductions, misinformation, among other factors
have kept corporations from realizing the full benefits

Mobile Barcode Pros/Cons
Typical cost for label is less then .$01 per tag
Line of sight technology, the mobile collection device must havevisibility of the barcode in order to scan it
Since each tag must be scanned in order to collect data, otherinformation can be collected at read time besides just locationinformation
To re-write data a new label must be printed and placed on item/bin
Data can be encrypted but then software must be updated to decryptthe data
Barcodes are less durable then RFID tags

RFID Pros/Cons
$.20 to $3.00 per tag
Metal and liquids can interfere with communication between tag andreader
Multiple tags can be ready almost simultaneously
No review process, blind scanning and collection
Initial investment is higher, but once infrastructure is obtained andimplemented, requires much less human labor going forward

RFID Pros/Cons Cont
Data that is held on the tag can be changed dynamically by the reader atscan time
RFID cannot count quantities, if you are inventorying material you stillhave to count how much of each item you have in each bin
Security, data on the RFID tag can be encrypted or password protected
RFID tags are much more durable and since line of sight is not required, tags can be placed inside the item

Moores Law
Moore's law describes a long-term trend in the history ofcomputing hardware. The number of transistors that can be
placed inexpensively on an integrated circuit doubles
approximately every two years.[1] This trend has continued for
more than half a century and is expected to continue until
2015 or 2020 or later.
