Former Texas Student Media di-rector Gary Borders said Feb. 15,2012 that his Feb. 8, 2012 resigna-tion came under pressure from theoffice of the Vice President of Stu-

dent Affairs rather than because of personal reasons as had been previ-ously announced.

After serving as TSM direc-tor for seven months, Borders an-nounced his resignation abruptly.Borders spoke out Feb. 15 saying hedid not wish to resign, but chose itrather than being fired. Borders saidhe was not given a warning or validreason for what he said was a forcedresignation by the Student Affairs vice president Juan Gonzalez.

I was called to meet with Mr.Gonzalez last week and he told meI had to resign or be fired, Borderssaid. It was a very brief meeting. Iwas stunned.

    Gonzalez, who announced in July

he will be leaving the vice presiden-cy to return to teaching, told TheDaily Texan in an email that all uni- versity employment policies werefollowed.

Mr. Borders decided to resignafter meeting with my office aboutemployment expectations, Gonza-lez said. Had Mr. Borders not de-cided to resign, UT employmentpolicies would have continued tohave been followed in my office inconsultation with the Board of Con-sultation Trustees.

Members of the TSM Boardof Trustees, which jointly over-sees TSM with the office of stu-dent affairs, expressed frustrationover not being consulted about

Borders departure.Student Media Board Presi-dent Lindsey Powers said she wassurprised by Borders resignationand was unaware of whether theVice Presidents office forced himto leave.

I have not heard anything offi-cially or legally,

Powers said. I would likesome answers.

Borders said Gonzalez told himhe was not collaborative and

was not doing enough to balancethe budget.

As one of his primary responsibil-ities, Borders was expected to helpTSM overcome a projected deficit of about $175,000, according to a letterfrom the vice presidents office. Hesaid the office balked at some of his

suggestions for doing so.Borders said his proposal, whichwas never made official, suggestedselling TSTV and KVRX in an at-tempt to gain $3 million for TSM,and this might have played a role inhis forced resignation. Borders saidStudent Affairs assistant vice pres-ident Jennifer Hammat told himGonzalez did not support the ideaat all.

I had talked to Mrs. Hammatabout the idea before I wrote it up andshe did not say she agreed with it, butshe didnt say it was completely crazy either, Borders said. We talked againafter she showed it to Gonzalez andshe said he absolutely hated it.

Borders said he did not have a

contract and was told he was hiredunder the pleasure of the presidentand could, therefore, be terminatedat any time. Although Borders is up-set by the forced resignation withoutany warning, he said there is no le-gal issue.

I was never evaluated before thatmeeting, Borders said. I was neverbefore given a warning about what Ineeded to change or do differently. Iwas never reprimanded. Nothing.

Powers said the TSM board isplanning a meeting soon to discussan interim replacement for the po-sition.

Borders previously worked fornewspapers throughout East Texaswhere he served as publisher and

columnist, according to his web-site.Previously publisher of Cedar

Parks Hill Country News, Borderssaid he hoped to hold the TSM po-sition for as long as possible, ac-cording to a June 2011 Daily Texanarticle. He replaced Hammat, whoserved as interim director for a yearand a half.

Ten Austin area residents con-nected with Yassine Enterpris-es, operator of several Austinnight club venues, were arrestedMarch 22, 2012 in a federal in-

estigation related to drug andmoney laundering charges.

The FBI, Internal RevenueService, Drug EnforcementAdministration, Texas Comp-trollers Office, Texas Attorney Generals Office, Texas Alco-holic Beverage Commission andAustin Police Department wereall involved in official busi-ness at Treasure Island PirateBar on Sixth Street near Nech-es Street, said IRS spokesmanMike Lemoine. FBI agents andother department officials wereseen at the bar collecting doc-uments and boxes of potentialevidence around 11 a.m. March22, 2012.

Lemoine said the investiga-tion of Yassine Enterprises in-

olves all venues managed by the company: Treasure IslandPirate Bar, Pure Ultra Lounge,Kiss & Fly, Stack Burger Bar,Malaia World Lounge, Roial,Hyde, Fuel and Spill.

Company owner and presi-dent Hussein Ali Yassine, alsoknown as Mike Yassine, 40, wasamong those arrested.

According to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice,Authorities believe that [Hus-sein Ali Yassine, Hadi Ali Yass-ine, 35, Mohammed Ali Yassine,38, and Marisse Marthe Ruales,33] used several business estab-lishments located in downtownAustin to launder over $200,000in cash, which they believed tobe the proceeds of narcoticstrafficking.

    According to the statement,the government is filing crim-inal charges and seeking mon-etary judgements against thed e f e n d a n t s t o t a l i n g a b o u t$300,000, which they claim rep-resents property involved in the

alleged offenses. All defendants are still in

federal custody and face max-imum prison sentences any-where from 20 years to life, ac-cording to FBI spokesman Erik Vasys and the statement. Fed-eral authorities also believe de-

fendants Mohammed Ali Yass-ine and Nizar Hakiki, 32, trans-ferred a firearm with the knowl-edge that the weapon would beused to commit a drug traffick-ing crime.

Mohammed Ali Yassine andAmar Thabet Araf, 29 are ac-cused of dis t r ibut ing largequantities of cocaine betweenDecember 2007 and Jan. 11,2008, according to their officialindictment.

[Three of the defendants]unlawfully, knowingly and will-ful ly did combine conspire ,confederate and agree with oth-ers known and unknown todistribute five hundred grams

or more of a mixture or sub-stance containing a detect-able amount of cocaine, theindictment stated.

The United States Govern-ment sought to hold Yassineand Araf liable for the forfei-ture of $13,600, constitutingthe proceeds of the above-de-scribed offenses, in the indict-ment.

    All defendants appeared in

court yesterday afternoon andare scheduled to have a fur-ther hearing on Tuesday beforeU.S. Magistrate Judge DennisGreen.

Yassine Enterprises is also thesubject of a class action law-suit filed by former employ-ee Jake Webb, who claims thatthe company regularly refusedto pay wages to tipped employ-ees. That case does not appearat this point to be related to thefederal investigation.

APD officers have been as-sisting the FBI with the inves-tigation and were present forthe search, said Lisa Cortinas, spokeswoman for APD.
