Hello All! It was great seeing three of our newest members at the August

meeting plus two more potential new members. Hopefully I will receive the

new members packages and get them sworn in at the next meeting. The two

visitors are both interested in joining us and one has already completed his

package and it has been forwarded to division. We currently are 88 strong

and growing. Remember, helping new members learn about the Auxiliary is

everyones job. Have you been doing your part: Please contact Paul Thomas,

FSO HR, and ask how you can help these new and potential members begin

a satisfying career in the Auxiliary. Congratulations to Kelly Duncan onbecoming our latest FSOPE. I would to give Bob Orenstein a Bravo Zulu for

stepping up and putting the boating safety course back on track. As of this

August 07, 2012 Jay Bird, Joe Fleming, Barbara Thibodeaux and Paul Berka

represented the flotilla at the Sullivan Lighthouse for National Lighthouse

Day. In addition to our tent the Flotilla Patrol Vessel was also present.

Events for September are as follows:

The Parachute Jump at Lake Murray will take place on September 06,

    2012.

An ABS class will be held in the Brass Buckle on September 22, 2012.

Vito Giardina has sent in the consolidated orders for the ODUs. We are now

    waiting for feedback.

AIS (Automatic Identification System) was established as a result of 9/11 to enable vessels to be

able to navigate safely by visually seeing each other while underway. Static and dynamic

navigational data is then sent via VHF from ship to ship and, thanks to GPS technology, this data

includes the vessel's position. The Charleston Harbor Pilot's website shows where all vessels so

equipped are located in and around the harbor. The link below will take you to the Charleston

Pilots Association home page. If you look under AIS Live, youll be able to see this technology in

    use.

Also Standard Horizon sells a radio that has a built in AIS receiver

that aids in collision avoidance when connected to GPS and VHF

antenna. Its their MATRIX AIS+GX2150 and goes for about $400.00.

The flotilla will have amassed in excess of fifty-five hundred hours by the time you read this.

Unfortunately, there are still hours which are going unreported. I would like to request that you

submit your 7029s on a monthly basis rather than hold them for two or three months and please

play close attention in which column you report those 7029 hours. I had four 7029s to enter this

past weekend and on all four of them I had to move hours from one column to another. Those four

forms went back as far as April.

In this day and age it is very important that everyone keep a close eye on their e-mail accounts for

any signs of phishing or other such scams. The other day I received an e-mail that was supposedly

from my account provider. It even contained their logo in the heading, and stated that my e-mail

provider was updating its database to purge unused accounts. It then said I had to click on a link to

verify my information to prevent my account from being deactivated.

I hadnt finished reading the first paragraph when I figured out this was a scam. First, your e-mail

provider, just like your bank, will never contact you asking for personal information since they

already have this it on file. Secondly, in the case of deleting an unused account, providers have

software built into their mainframes which will automatically suspend an account after 90 days

without activity. And finally, if something looks like a scam, chances are, its a scam. Below are a

few basic rules of thumb to keep your account safe:

Never open an e-mail from someone you dont know.

Make sure your password is at least 16 characters in length and include both upper and lower-case lettering, numbers, and symbols.

Unless you have just gotten off the phone with someone who has said they are sending you a

link, never click on a link sent to you by anybody, including a random link sent to you by

someone you know. If you receive an e-mail from someone you know, and the e-mail contains

a link and a message saying check this out or this is awesome, DO NOT CLICK ON IT!! Your

friends account has been compromised and they should be warmed immediately.

Think of opening your e-mail account like opening a credit card statement. Always check your

sent messages file. If you see something you did not send, e-mail a warning to everyone on yourcontact list to disregard the suspicious e-mail and change your password immediately.

Also, if youre uncertain and in need of a second opinion you can always

e-mail me and Ill help you out any way I can.

The members of the Citadel Auxiliary Detachment are

excited to jump right back into training as we begin the

new school year! After a summer filled with Coast Guard

internships and other training, they are very eager to

continue with the enhanced Auxiliary University

Program curriculum. Several cadets participated in this

program with internships this summer. Sasha LaRiviere,

Margaret LaRiviere and Eugene Pak spent the summer atCoast Guard Headquarters. They have experienced the

real world Coast Guard at both working local field

stations and in the office environment that supplies the

    equally important organizational structure. Matthew

Bowden spent a week at Mobil Air Station in Mobile,

Alabama where he witnessed life in the pilot's seat first-

hand. Christopher Zeller began his career in the United

States Coast Guard Reserve Force by graduating boot

camp as a Seaman at Training Center Cape May. Recentlypromoted, BM3 William Singletary continued his train-

ing in the Coast Guard Reserve Force in Yorktown, VA at

the 'A' School. Overall it was a tremendously successful

summer, filled with new and educational experiences.

The cadets are pleased to welcome new freshman to the

detachment this fall. There is a busy agenda in the next

few months, including physical fitness training, Field

Training Exercises, and information labs. Cadets will beexposed to Coast Guard training methods and more of

what the active force and auxiliary do to support the

mission. This will be an exciting, promising semester

with more site visits, and leadership courses. The cadets

anticipate this year to be more educational and fun than

    the last!

There is not very much to report from the silver side in publications. On the gold

side however, Will Singletary wrote an article which appeared in the most recent

issue ofThe Reservist. The title of the article is A Tale of Two Coasties and can be

found by clicking on the image to the left, or from the link below.

    The Reservist, Issue Two, 2012

Paul Thomas spoke to the issues we are experiencing with Public Education. We need help making

people aware of the boating safety classes and this is a team effort. One way to fill classes is by

partnering with businesses, organizations and corporations and offering the class to their staffs

and/or participants. If anyone has contacts with businesses, organizations, etc. please let me know

so I might contact them about hosting a class. Although, it is not as potentially going out on patrol

and possibly pulling someone from the water; making a phone call and having a business host a

class could help save more than one life. Please join me in our mission!

can read back issues of the magazine by visiting this page:

The image to the left is the cover of the most recent issue of Coast GuardMagazine. Check it out when you have time. Its available in PDF format

In this issue there is a particularly heartwarming story of a child from

the Make-A-Wish Foundation whose dream was to become a Coast

On August 7, Joe Fleming, Paul Berka, Barbara Thibodeaux and Jay Bird spent the day at the

Sullivans Island Light, for National Lighthouse Day. For many years, 12-8 maintained this light, and

it holds especially fond memories because of the volunteer time and efforts spent there. The Public

Affairs tent was stocked with safety materials. Barbara Thibodeaux brought child-safety specific

materials which the children enjoyed greatly. Attendance was especially good, across the entire age

spectrum, from newborn to long-since retired. Several retired Coasties came for the day, including

a gentleman who was stationed at the Lighthouse as a cook in the late 1950s. We presented themessage of boating safety to those in attendance. Joe Fleming was interviewed for a broadcast on

the television news, later that night. Below you will find photos from the event. On the website we

have additional photos posted. Make sure to check them out when you get a chance.

Nothing to report for September from the Materials department. Id like to extend a thanks to all

the members of our flotilla for their hard work this year. Boating season will soon be drawing to a

There is nothing to report other that the fact that we have just over two hundred and thirty-eight

Marine Safety hours for the year. I had hoped that our flotilla would have had multiple training

opportunities this year but that has not materialized. Dont give up though. Ill continue to shake

the bushes and hope that something falls out.

Weather has continued to derail our day/night ATON Patrols. We only have the Upper Cooper

River yet to complete. Storms canceled the last patrol. As it turned out this was the storm that

resulted in a drowning on the Lake. Our patrol would have been right there in the middle of the

storm. As badly as we want the ATON Patrol to move forward we must respect and practice TCT.

Another day and better weather will see the completion of the Upper Cooper River in September or

early October as the stormy season dissipates.

The securing of property, especially the covering of it with protective sheeting, is called 'battening

down'. It has a nautical origin and 'battening down' of walkways and hatches was done on ships

when bad weather was expected. The earliest known reference to this practice is in William

Falconer's An universal dictionary of the marine, 1769:

The battens serve to confine the edges of the tarpaulings close down to the sides of the hatches. A

batten is a strip of wood. Ship's hatches were often open or covered with a wooden grating to allow

for ventilation of the lower decks. When bad weather was imminent, the hatches were covered

with tarpaulin and the covering was 'battened down', that is, edged with wooden strips to prevent

it from blowing off. The first citation of the explicit use of the phrase 'batten down the hatches' is

    from the 1883 Chambers Journal:

"Batten down the hatches - quick, men."

not have their 4 hours for the year. Currently there is one ABS class scheduled for September. If

you havent met your requirement for the year, this would be a good opportunity to do so. Also, a

number of our members who are qualified crew do not have their 12 hours in for the year.

Please double-check to make sure you have the required hours. REYR is a terrible thing to be.

number and give it to Kelly Duncan, FSOPE.

Kelly will take care of the rest. Lets try to make

fall a great time to take a boating course, word-of-mouth marketing is one the best ways to make

    this happen.

We are two months away from flotilla elections,

if you are interested in being the FC or VFC then

you need to get your paper work in order and

pass it on to Bob Orenstein. Anyone wishing to

be an FSO please let Bob know.

I would like to welcome The Citadel Detachment

back from summer break and look forward to

working with them as they start the new school

    year.

Operations have slowed down a little due to

fuel budget restraints. We are working with

station as best we can to save fuel on patrols.

ATON will do one more patrol for the team to

complete all the Charleston area needs for

    coverage.

National Lighthouse Day was celebrated at

Sullivans Island with very good turnout of

spectators and former Coast Guard members

stationed there. Our Flotilla set up a boating

safety display along with the flotilla Opsfact.

The Children loved getting in the boat looking

around at all the equipment. Many of the

coasties we met wished they had a boat like

    ours back then.

On July 30th the invoices for the 2013 dues

went out to eighty-eight members. The pay date

is August 30th. So far only twenty-six have paid, which is just thirty percent! Any member who

cannot pay because of financial difficulties

should let the leadership know. If you do not

wish to remain in the Auxiliary please let Paul

Thomas FSO-HS know. Everyone else is urged

to send your check made out to USCG Auxiliary

The Lake Murray air jump will be September 6.

We hope to have a great turnout and good

weather. Thanks to all our Coxswains and Crew

members for a Great job this year. We cant do it

without good people like we have.

Its that time of year again, we need to keep a

watch out on the weather and be ready in case a

hurricane heads this way. The Everbridge

system has been tested a couple times, and

hopefully we dont need to use it for real. As you

all know, if we evacuate, let a staff member

    know where you go.

The flotilla has completed 229 Vessel Safety Checks (VCSs) year to date. We are 44.73% of our

2012 target of 512 VSCs. On August 05, 2012 the Blitz Team of Paul Thomas and Paul Berka

completed 22 VSCs at Leeds Landing. For the month of September the plan is to have blitzes at the

    following landings:

September 09, 2012 (Sunday) from 0900 to 1300 hours at Limehouse Landing.

September 23, 2012 (Sunday) from 0900 to 1300 at Folly Landing.

Changes to this schedule may have to be made based on weather conditions and Vessel Examiners

availability. DNR is scheduled to do safety checks at Wappoo and Leeds landings in September.

Fourteen out of the fifteen Flotilla Vessel Examiners have completed the minimum of five VSCs for

    the year.

There is nothing much to report for September in RBS Visitation. Our Flotilla has exceeded its goals

for the year and we still have four months left in 2012. With the recent increase in gas prices this

has caused a reduction in weekly visits, so hopefully this situation will only be temporary. Our RBS

Visitation team has done a terrific job for this year, and I look for things to keep improving for

2013. If you dont have qualifications for RBS Visitation I would encourage you to look into this

program. RBS provides a direct line of communication between the Auxiliary, as well as the Coast

Guard, with area businesses. This goes a long way in helping to educate the boating public.
