CONVOCATION CENTER

THE CONVOCATION CENTER AT CAL U The Convocation Center at Cal U is the latest addition to the campus of Cal U. The facility is the new home of Vulcan basketball. The arena also is used for Commencement, convocations and other campus gatherings. Cal U plans to host athletic tournaments, trade shows, job fairs, country music concerts and other public events in this spacious facility. The Convocation Center is available for executive-level conferencing. Located on the shores of the Monongahela River, just 35 miles from Pittsburgh, it is the heart of River’s Bend, a full-service conferencing service. The 142,000-square-foot Convocation Center is a model of “smart” technology, the hub of campus activities and a destination for visitors from southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.

It took approximately two years for this landmark structure to rise at California University of Pennsylvania.

This state-of-the-art building houses a 6,000-seat arena, the largest indoor venue between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, W.Va.

This 142,000-square-foot building gives Cal U much needed space to welcome the families of graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates to enjoy Commencement together in comfortable surroundings.

An 80-foot tower that stands alongside the building announces its high-tech character with scrolling text and digital images displayed along its sides.

The Convocation Center was a $59 million project. Nearly 400 laborers and skilled workers have worked at the Convocation Center site.

The Vulcans endured a tumultuous start last season, but still finished the year with 17 victories and made a 12th-consecutive appearance in the PSAC Tournament. Cal U boasted the PSAC West Athlete of the Year for the second-straight season and seventh time in 10 years. However, the Vulcans missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade. The goal under Jess Strom, who is in her first full season as head coach, is to lead the program back to the national prominence it warranted with four appearances at the Elite Eight from 2003-09, including the 2004 National Championship. The Vulcans will look to several returning players to provide the offense this year, as PSAC West Athlete of the Year Amy Johns and All-PSAC guard Danielle Luckett combined for nearly 45 percent of the team’s scoring last year. Senior captain Stephanie Michael is the most veteran player on the team with 51 career starts and should be one of the top three-point shooters in the PSAC. She averaged 5.3 points last season while battling injuries, but showed the ability to be a dynamic scorer. In the first three games after Strom was appointed interim head coach, Michael scored 49 points and made a combined 12 three-pointers. Sophomore guard Chelsea McKnight is back as the team’s top returning scorer at 6.5 points per game. She made 12 starts as a true freshman and proved to be a capable defender, finishing second on the team with 51 steals. The backcourt boasts a pair of talented and experienced point guards in juniors Ryah Gadson and Kate Seebohm. Gadson has made over 30 starts and totaled nearly 125 assists in her career. Seebohm was forced to see limited action last season due to medical reasons. However, she appears poised to return to the starting lineup and regain the form she displayed as a freshman when she led the team in assists while playing nearly 22 minutes per game. Cal U features added depth at the guard

position with the addition of freshmen Jasmine Hill, Caela Tindilia and Kaylynn Waters. Hill was a prolific scorer in Maryland and led the state in steals, while Tindilia battled injuries and still earned all-conference honors while playing north of Baltimore. Waters was a two-time all-state selection and 1,000-point scorer while playing at New Castle. Junior forward Elena Antonenko is poised to move into the starting lineup this season. She set career highs in both points and rebounds last year while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, Antonenko led the team and ranked among the PSAC leaders with 1.2 blocks per game while averaging just 15 minutes per game. Sophomore forwards Irina Kukolj and Emma Mahady combined to start 12 games at the end of last season. Kukolj posted her best performances of the year down the stretch, finishing with 15 rebounds in two games at eventual-PSAC Champion Edinboro. Mahady, who also started the first three games of the year, displayed the ability to score in double-figures even while coming off the bench as a true freshman last year. The forward position will be solidified with the addition of junior transfer Ashley Hines and freshman Ayonna Richardson. Hines played the last two seasons at Potomac State (W.Va.) and averaged a double-double last year, scoring over 20 points per game. She also helped lead Potomac State to a pair of conference championships. Richardson was an all-conference selection in both basketball and volleyball while in Maryland. She possesses tremendous length and could develop into a skilled shot-blocker with her 6-foot-2 frame. Cal U was selected to finish fourth in the preseason PSAC West poll, its lowest position in recent years. Under the guidance of Strom, the Vulcans look to challenge not only for a berth in the PSAC Tournament, but also contend for an appearance in the NCAA Tournament and reestablish the program on the national scene.

The California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team has been a program with tremendous success over the years. Dating back to the inception of the program in the 1970’s, the women’s basketball program has produced talented individuals both on and off the court. From a perennial conference power throughout the 1980’s and 90’s to a program now that garners the national spotlight each and every year. In 1985 when Paul Flores took over the Cal U program, he had his work cut out for him. It was a relatively new program that hadn’t experienced a great deal of success. As he struggled in his first year finishing the season with a 2-24 overall record, he set out to turnaround the program and he did just that. In his second and third seasons, he improved the Vulcans’ records to 10-16 and 15-12, respectively. Then in his fourth year controlling the reigns to the program, the Cal U women’s team took a turn for the better and hasn’t looked back since they finished the 1988-89 season with a 19-8 record. Coach Flores then guided the Vulcans over the next six years with an impressive 106-56 record. During his tenure, he coached some of the Vulcans’ all-time greats. Current assistant coach Anne Malkowiak played for Coach Flores and still holds the career record for three-point percentage and single-season records for free-throw and three-point percentages en route to being inducted in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Other Hall of Fame inductees that played for Coach Flores include Lara Thornton who finished her Vulcan career with a then-school record 1,892 points, Corinne Vanderwal who still holds the career record for field-goal percentage at an astonishing 67.7 percent, Sandy Stodolsky, Traci Cox, and Tammy McIntire, who holds the all-time record for free-throws made. Once Coach Flores decided to retire, the Vulcans looked to Tom Kendall to continue the successful ways that had been laid down before him. During his short five-year stint, Kendall had a combined record of 76-56. When Tom Kendall decided to step down, the Cal U athletic administration decided to go in a different direction and hire up-and-coming coach Darcie Vincent. In her first season, Vincent led a well-balanced team that showed a lot of promise and finished the year with an overall record of 19-10. This was the groundwork that needed to be laid as the next seven years proved to be some of the best the Vulcan program had seen as Coach Vincent tallied a 212-47 record. She led the Vulcans to a pair of Elite

Eight appearances, two Final Four a p p e a r a n c e s and the ultimate goal of a National Championship in 2004. Vincent also coached some of Cal U’s most successful student-athletes in school history including Hall of Famers Sara McKinney, Sameera

Philyaw, Beck Siembak and Megan Storck. McKinney broke Thornton’s scoring record and finished her career as a three-time WBCA All-American, and Siembak was tabbed the National Player of the Year as a junior in 2003. After Vincent left following the 2008 season, long-time assistant Heather Kearney took control of the program, leading the Vulcans to the NCAA Elite Eight where they were defeated by Franklin Pierce. After just one season Kearney decided to coach with Vincent at A p p a l a c h i a n State in North Carolina and the search began for another head coach. The next year Cal U posted a 24-8 record and advanced into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Leading the Vulcans was guard Brooque Williams, who reset the school’s

scoring record. Forward Kayla Smith also played a vital role in leading Cal U throughout the year, as she garnered all-conference and all-region recognition. Last season, Smith earned WBCA All-America honors

and was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Year after setting the all-time school record for rebounds and leading the PSAC in scoring. The 2010-11 campaign marked the end of an era, as the men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out play in Hamer Hall. Many victories were won

and memories made in Hamer Hall, but the Vulcan basketball programs have a new home in the 6,000-seat Convocation Center. Cal U opened the state-of-the-art facility last season with a 79-52 victory over Mansfield before making a 12th-straight appearance in the PSAC Tournament.

*Please contact the Sports Information Office with any stories or facts as we are constantly trying to update and preserve the history of the women’s basketball program.*

HISTORY

Cal U claimed the 2004 NCAA Division II National Championship with a 75-72 victory over Drury in St. Joseph, Mo. The Vulcans finished the year with a 35-1 overall record.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
