2012-13 ANNUAL REPORT 1

DEAR YELLOW JACKET FANSJust a few months into my fi rst year at Georgia Tech, I have been impressed by the passion and pride of our fans. However, this came as no surprise to me – that passion is one of the many things that attracted me to the Institute and the city of Atlanta.

Our fans and alumni, who have been so welcoming to me personally, share many of the same goals that I have for Georgia Tech Athletics. We want student-athletes who embrace the challenge of excelling in the classroom at one of America’s top academic institutions while competing for championships at the highest level athletically. We want coaches and staff who will help them reach those goals, including the ultimate goal of obtaining a degree from Georgia Tech.

Academically, it is clear that we are on the right track. In the NCAA’s Academic Progress Report released in June, Georgia Tech’s numbers were at an all-time high. While we are pleased with those results – and with the hard work by our student-athletes, coaches and staff – we want our numbers to continue to climb each year.

I also believe that while there is work to be done, we have a foundation in place to enjoy great success in the coming years in all 17 of our varsity sports.

The Annual Report was created for our fans and alumni. It refl ects the many successes our teams and individuals enjoyed in 2012-13. The Annual Report is a guide to not only our academics and athletics, but also a transparent look at our fi nances. I hope that you enjoy this publication.

As we look back on 2012-13, I look forward with great anticipation to late August. I hope that I see you on the Flats frequently in 2013-14.

I want to personally thank all of you who support the program through your generous donations, your purchase of season tickets and in many other ways. Your continued support is critical to our success, now and in the future.

Georgia Tech is a special place. I feel honored to be a part of it.

Thank you and Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

Mike Bobinski

2012-13 ANNUAL REPORT 11

FINANCIALSFiscal Year 2013

The Georgia Tech Athletic Association projects a net loss of $1.8 million for fi scal year 2012-13. This shortfall will be covered by our GTAA Fund Balance (TABLE A), which essentially serves as contingency account to protect the GTAA from the possibility of such losses. The net loss for FY13 is primarily the result of lower than forecasted ticket sales in both football and basketball as well as ticket costs surrounding both the ACC Championship Game and the Sun Bowl.

The balance in the Facility Quasi-Endowments (TABLE B) is projected to grow $5.2 million, to a new total of $34.5 million. GTAA’s long term fi nancial health is dependent on maintaining and growing this endowment base which supports capital improvements, scholarships, the Total Person Program and debt service.

Fiscal Year 2014

With Georgia on the home football schedule and contracts in place which increase sponsor revenue, the GTAA has $3 million in new funding available for FY 14. This new funding has provided the GTAA with fl exibility to lower ticket revenue budgets so that they are more in line with recent years’ performances. In addition, the ACC has put measures in place to ensure institutions don’t experience fi nancial losses as a result of appearances in a bowl game or the ACC Football Championship Game. Each of these factors increases the likelihood of GTAA fi nishing FY 14 with positive net income. Net income gained in FY 14 will go towards restoring the GTAA Fund Balance Account (TABLE A) to its target balance of $5 million.

ALEXANDER-THARPE FUNDThe Alexander-Tharpe Fund (A-T) is a subsidiary of the GTAA and serves as the primary fund-raising arm. New gifts and

commitments to A-T for FY 2013 were in excess of $15 million. Once again we are extremely grateful to our friends and fans

of Georgia Tech athletics for their fi nancial support.

Gifts and commitments fall into three categories: endowments, current operations and facilities. A-T continues on the very

ambitious goal of fully endowing scholarships for all student-athletes at Tech within the decade.

Special recognition goes out to two groups affi liated with the Alexander-Tharpe Fund.• Golden Jackets: This is our highest level of recognition. These donors have made cumulative cash gifts of $1,000,000 to Georgia Tech athletics.• A-T Board of Directors: This volunteer group of Georgia Tech athletic supporters provide oversight and advice towards the eff orts and direction of the Alexander-Tharpe Fund organization.
