A member of Canada’s national women’s hockey program from 1989-2008, Sunohara comes to U of T in 2011-12 after serving two years as the director of women’s hockey at The Hill Academy in Vaughan, Ont. She was previously an assistant coach with the Blues in 2004-05, as well as an assistant coach with Hockey Canada’s under-18 and -19 women’s programs.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist served as an assistant captain for seven years with Team Canada before retiring from international competition in 2008. In addition to the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics, Sunohara has represented Canada in several international ice hockey competitions. In total, she won 15 gold and three silver medals as a member of Canada’s national team, fi nishing her career with 118 points (56 goals and 62 assists) in 164 games.

Sunohara also served as team captain for 10 seasons with the Brampton Canadette-Thunder in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), leading her team to two provincial and one national title.

SEASON PREVIEW

V A R S I T Y B L U E S 8

The Varsity Blues women’s hockey team begins their 2012-13 quest this Friday, October 5 as they take on cross-town rivals Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The Blues home opener is scheduled for the next day (Oct. 6) as they host the Queen’s Gaels at 4 p.m. The season wraps up when the University of Toronto hosts the 2013 CIS women’s hockey championship, March 7-10, at Varsity Arena.

“This is a big year for us,” said Vicky Sunohara, who is entering her second season as Blues bench boss. “The automatic berth into the national championship is great, but it’s up to us to prove that we belong there and can compete with the best in the CIS.”

U of T has had a busy off season of training as they look to improve upon last season’s third-place fi nish. Having already solidifi ed the host’s berth at the national championship, Toronto will be vying for their fi rst OUA Final Four fi nish since the 2007-08 season.

The Varsity Blues return two of the hottest goaltenders in the OUA in third-year veteran Nicole Kesteris and sophomore standout Krista Funke. Together, the duo combined for a 0.926 save percentage in 2011-12 and will look to backstop the Blues to success this season.

Fourth-year veterans Brittany Kirby and Marlie McLaughlin are set to lead U of T’s defensive corps in 2012-13. They will be joined by familiar faces in April Looije, Mary Claire Geneau, Kaitlyn Bannon and Caitlin Maikawa. This unit helped To-ronto to rank third in the OUA with 62 goals against last season.

Team captain Kelly O’Hanlon leads a mix of veteran and rookie talent up front. She, along with Ragan Danford, Amanda Ricker and Callie Bazak, are all smart technical players that will steer the ship this season.

They will rely on sophomores Courtney Tougas and Jacqueline Scheffel to create opportunities around the net, while new-comers Taylor Day and Kristi Riseley have already proved to have a vital strong scoring touch this preseason.

The University of Toronto women’s hockey program is rich in history and tradition. The Varsity Blues fi rst iced a team in 1921 when a student-athlete named Marion Hilliard put together a team to play against McGill Univer-sity. The women’s team won the fi rst ever intercollegiate championship and would go on to win 11 more before the league was disbanded in 1933 due to the Depression. Hilliard’s activism left a lasting effect on women’s hockey in general and specifi cally at the Uni-versity of Toronto, where the program has thrived.

In the late 1960s league play was re-established among Ontario universi-ties and the Varsity Blues have been a dominant force in the province and the country ever since. Starting in 1971-72 the Varsity Blues have captured 17 conference championships, more than any other team in the Ontario, and U of T was the team of the 1990s, winning six OUA championships and placing fi rst in the OUA every season.

In 1997, women’s hockey became a CIS sport and the Varsity Blues are one of only fi ve teams to capture the coveted national title. They fi nished an unbeaten 35-0 season in 2000-01 winning the national title with a 4-3 victory over the Regina Cougars.

Since the fi rst International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sanctioned Women’s World Championship was held in Ottawa in 1990. U of T has enjoyed a strong relationship with Canada’s national team ever since. Eight Varsity Blues players have gone on to play for the national team: Lori Dupuis, Heather Ginzel, Jayna Hefford, An-drea Hunter, Leslie Reddon, Nathalie Rivard, Laura Schuler, and Vickey Sunohara. Dupuis, Hefford, Reddon, Schuler, and Sunohara also joined the Canadian Olympic team. In addition to the senior national team, the Varsity Blues have had fi ve players on the Under 22 National Team. Susie Laska, Kim Malcher, Safi ya Muharuma, Lisa Robertson, and Jill Savin have all worn

the red and white for Canada while also wearing the blue and white of the Varsity Blues.

U of T’s coaching staff has also been well represented nationally as both Karen Hughes and Dave McMaster have been with Canada’s national team. Hughes, the Varsity Blues head coach since 1993-94, has been involved with Canada’s national women’s team since 1996. From 1998 to 2001 Karen was an assistant coach with Canada’s gold medal winning na-tional women’s team at the World Championships. She represented Canada as an assistant coach in 2002 at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In addition, Hughes was head coach of the U-22 Na-tional Team in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and was head coach of the Senior National Team when they captured gold at the 2004 World Championships.
