Classical series

Celebrate the 90th Birthday of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Senator George McGovern. Opening Night at the South Dakota Symphony shines as Senator McGovern narrates Copland’s iconic Lincoln Portrait. Italian pianist Emanuele Arciuli, who has dazzled audiences around the world with his flawless skill, returns to South Dakota.

It’s time to celebrate! For 90 years, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra has brought you the world’s greatest music season after season, concert by concert. Staying true to its mission, the SDSO has enriched the lives of people living throughout our region by inspiring audiences, educating children and adults alike, and building bridges in our increasingly diverse community. Along the way, your orchestra has been recognized nationally as a leading regional ensemble for its excellence in performance and community engagement. We play music for you, our audience. Concert by concert we strive to present a broad range of music written over the last 400 years at the highest possible level. The dedication of our musicians is palpable in every performance; displaying passion, energy, and excellent musicianship to bring you the very best, now and into the future. Join us as we continue our adventure! Maestro Delta David GierMusic Director

Among the most spectacular and best loved pieces of the Baroque era, Bach’s six masterpieces present a uniquely wonderful opportunity to feature the musicians of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. The concert will also highlight guest conductor and Baroque music specialist Kent Tritle, who has been described by The New York Times as “…the brightest star in New York’s choral music world.”

Listening to and singing Handel’s Messiah has been a tradition throughout the English-speaking world ever since it was composed over 250 years ago. The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Chorus continue that tradition in the beautiful setting of First Lutheran Church.

In January the orchestra brings to life Rachmaninoff’s expressive third symphony and celebrates the Lakota Music Project with Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s new song cycle. Inspired by Rachmaninoff, Tate began his work as a pianist and has become one of the most prominent American Indian classical composers alive today. “Tate’s connection to nature and the human experience was quite apparent in this piece…rarer still is his ability to effectively infuse classical music with American Indian nationalism.” -The Washington Post.

Be moved by the passionate works of these legendary Russian composers. Be swept away with the return of Alessio Bax, who has been described by the Dallas Morning News as “ …one of the most compelling pianists around…There’s a dazzling virtuosity where called for, but more impressive is his way of shaping the music, warmly caressing phrases.”

The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Chorus continue their 90th anniversary celebration with a mighty and beautiful masterpiece. The last work of a master composer, the Requiem represents the perfect marriage of Mozart’s dramatic, symphonic, and sacred writing. Full of power and subtlety, this work expresses the complete range of Mozart’s emotion and spirituality.

Described by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the most consequential performers of our time,” the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra welcomes vocal superstar Dawn Upshaw. “Leaping effortlessly across language barriers and chasms of mood, the astounding Upshaw spanned the full breadth of her vocal and emotional range. Upshaw’s instrument has the kind of power, clarity, and pure beauty that can transfix a listener.” – St. Paul Pioneer Press.
