Course Catalog!

The Training Fund offers a wide range of industry and basic education programs designed

specifically for building service workers. These courses are developed with input from

building owners and union members to give you the skills you need to succeed. Best of all

it is completely free of charge for eligible members! Below are just a few of the highlights

you can look forward to this upcoming school year:

New Training Headquarters

manhattan, ny: The Training Fund has moved

to a new facility with 22 brand new fully-equipped

classrooms that allow for enhanced hands-on

learning opportunities in carpentry, plumbing,

electricity, and computer classes.

new haven, ct: The Training Fund is now in a

new building on the Gateway College Campus.

This building is the first gold-certified LEED

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

public building in Connecticut.

32BJ Thomas Shortman Training Fund The 32BJ Training Fund is a joint labor-management partnership that offers training to eligible participants at no cost. The fund is supported by contributions negotiated between 32BJ SEIU and participating employers.

Our mission is to train every participant to grow to the next level. We want to continually raise the standards of our industry by providing 32BJ members with the tools they need to meet the challenges of a changing industry.

Advisory Committee The Advisory Committee informs the Board of Trustees about industry practices and suggests courses based on the needs of the building maintenance and real estate industry. The Advisory Committee is composed of both labor and management representatives. The committee is co-chaired by:

EligibilityEligibility for the 32BJ Training Fund is fully detailed in the Summary Plan Description (SPD) available online at training.32bjfunds.com or by calling Member Services at 800-551-32BJ (3225), Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm.

Your eligibility depends on the particu-lar collective bargaining agreement or participation agreement covering your employment. Generally, the waiting period for training is 90 days unless otherwise specified in your collective bargaining agreement or participation agreement. If you work for the Public School Division, you must be employed for 3 months, working an average of 60 hours a month, to take classes.

If you become ineligible and are out of work for more than 90 days, you will be required to complete the waiting period again. If you are taking a class when you become ineligible you will be allowed to complete your classes for that trimester.

On-Site Classes If you, a management company, or building owner have 10 or more eligible participants interested in attending a class and have appropriate space, the 32BJ Training Fund can present classes marked with the symbol at your build-ing. Call 212-539-2808 for more details.

Creating an Environ-ment for LearningParticipants who take courses through the 32BJ Training Fund are hardworking people who make a commitment to their personal and professional development. Our Rules & Regulations are distrib-uted at the start of each course. You are expected not only to read the Rules & Regulations, but also to show your fellow students the respect they deserve by abiding by these rules.

Attendance PolicyMinimum attendance of 80 percent is required.

Course/Seminar Prerequisites Some courses and seminars require you to complete a prerequisite—a prepara-tory course—before you enroll. Some courses require minimum reading and math skills. Mastery of these skills can be established by presenting a U.S. high school diploma, or GED, or by passing a standardized test at registration. These prerequisites are noted above the course description if they are required.

Test Out AvailableThe 32BJ Training Fund allows members to test out of some prerequisite courses, where available. This is indicated above the course descriptions.

Enrollment in high-demand courses will be determined by lottery, not on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that courses may be canceled if enrollment is less than anticipated.

2) Your Log in ID is your first initial + last name + the last four digits of your Social Security number. For example: John Smith with a Social Security number of 123-45-6789 would format his username: jsmith6789 (Note: no hyphens are included in the Log in ID).

Courses & seminarsAir Compressors: Certificate of Fitness Test Preparation TWO 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Prepare to take the FDNY Examination for Certificate of Fitness to Operate Air Compressors. Certificate holders are equipped to make minor repairs and perform maintenance on air compressors, including changing the oil and the air filter. Note that third party testing fees are the responsibility of the member.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration I 11 WEEKS

Prerequisites: Electricity Basics and Plumbing Basics Gain an understanding of basic refrigera-tion theories and principles. Learn the principles of heat, heat flow, refrigerants, temperature, and the pressure-tempera-ture relationship within the refrigeration system. Review proper soldering and brazing techniques through hands-on practice. Learn about new environmen-tally friendly refrigerants.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration II11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration ITroubleshoot and make mechanical and electrical repairs to domestic refrigera-tors. Learn the basic cycle of a domestic refrigerator, and the tools and techniques used to install pressure gauges as per EPA regulations. Understand system pressure, recovery, evacuation, charging, and meth-ods used to leak-check systems. Read electrical schematics and understand basic motor principles and operation.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration III 11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration IIPrepare to take the EPA Universal Refrig-erant Handling Certificate Test. Trouble-shoot and make mechanical and electrical repairs on domestic and light commercial AC systems and refrigeration controls.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: Absorption Systems 11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration IIILearn basic absorption theory, opera-tions, and maintenance. Understand the internal cycle of the absorption machine.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: EPA Certification for Refrigerant Recovery

FIVE 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Prepare and take the EPA Certification for the Refrigeration License Prepara-tion Course or for Refrigeration License renewal. Learn about the test format, core general knowledge, the Clean Air Act, dehydration, safety, leak detection, and Type 1, 2, and 3 requirements. The exam will be administered in the final class. Note that third party testing fees are the responsibility of the member.

About Courses & SeminarsCOURSES (indicated in blue) take place over an entire trimester, which are 11–16 weeks long. The length is indicated under each course title and is shown in the following format: 11 WEEKS.

SEMINARS (indicated in orange) vary in length, ranging from a single session up to nine sessions. The number and length of ses-sions is indicated under each seminar title and is shown in the following format: TWO 3-HOUR SESSIONS.

Please check pages 27–43 to be sure that the course or seminar you are interested in is offered at your preferred location, and at a time when you can attend. Courses and seminars are offered at day, evening, and weekend times.

WEEKDAY SESSIONS last 2–3 hours and meet once or twice per week. WEEKEND SESSIONS last 2–6 hours and meet once per week.

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: Variable Air Volume THREE 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Prerequisite: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration IIIAcquire an understanding of air flow con-cepts and associated standards. Learn how to set and maintain thermostats as well as how to troubleshoot air volume issues.

Air Pollution Control 11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Appropriate reading and math level, or high school diploma, or GEDPrepare to take the New York City Depart-ment of Environmental Protection’s Air Pollution Control Examination and the

Blueprint Reading11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Appropriate reading and math level, or high school diploma, or GED Learn to read and understand blue- prints. Review symbols, scale, and other basic concepts related to repair and renovation projects in residential and commercial buildings.

Blueprints: An Introduction ONE 3-HOUR SESSION

Interpret basic blueprints and schematics. Review blueprint symbols and learn what will be covered in the Blueprint Reading course.

Boiler Feed Water Testing and Treatment ONE 6-HOUR SESSION OR TWO 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Prerequisite: Heating Systems IAcquire the skills and knowledge to test and treat boiler water properly. Assess the type of water; learn to control corrosives, chlorides, and pH; feed water testing, operation of the shunt feeder, and chemical safety.partner: new york city housing authority

FDNY’s Certificate of Fitness Examination for #6 Low PSI Boiler. Review methods of energy conservation, identify types of fuel oil, and learn how to protect air quality. Note that third party testing fees are the responsibility of the member.

Alarm Systems 11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Electricity Basics Select the right alarm system for a build-ing facility, construct a basic system, or supervise installation. Review various alarm systems’ methods of installation. Study circuits, switches, and panels.

Appliance Troubleshooting11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Electricity BasicsTroubleshoot root causes of appliance malfunctions. Working with a wide range of appliances, learn to identify and repair basic problems and make environmen-tally sound decisions on when replace-ment is warranted.

Asbestos Awareness ONE 2-HOUR SESSION

Learn about asbestos health hazards, where they are likely to be found, and how to handle a situation where asbestos will be disturbed.

Building Insurance: Who Is Covered? ONE 2-HOUR SESSION

Understand who and what is covered by a building’s Certificates of Liability Insurance and Workers’ Compensation Insurance. Learn the differences between Home Owners’ Insurance and Building Insurance policies and what additional coverage should be in place during renovation projects or special events in the building.

Building Management I: Budgets and Preventative Maintenance11 WEEKS

Prerequisites: Appropriate reading and math level, or high school diploma, or GED, and Computer IIUnderstand the budget review process, develop an operating budget, and inter-pret building financials. Understand how preventative maintenance affects a build-ing budget and financials. Create budgets and preventative maintenance schedules in Microsoft Excel.

Building Management II: Documentation and the Law11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Building Management I: Budgets and Preventative MaintenanceUnderstand the legal requirements of property management, including OSHA, Fair Housing, EEOC, and compliance with

NYC Administrative Codes and Local Laws. In Microsoft Excel, create work schedules, payroll timesheets, and building mainte-nance records. Access compliance informa-tion, license status of tradespeople, and building violations online.

Building Management III: Project Management11 WEEKS

Prerequisites: Building Management II and completion of, or concurrent registration in, OSHA 30-Hour Outreach Training Complete rehabilitation projects on schedule and within budget. Under-stand construction contracts, alteration agreements, payment breakdowns, and requistioning. Adhere to building codes and safety procedures and identify nonconforming work. Know when to use outside contractors and how to interact with them. Complete punch list items. Develop a capital budget.

Building Management: Ethics ONE 3-HOUR SESSION

Explore ethical issues in simple terms and develop models necessary to evaluate situations and make sound ethical deci-sions. Topics include models of ethical decision making, ethics in fair housing, and conflicts of interest.partner: new york association of realty managers

Learn how a management company operates on a day-to-day basis. Discus-sions will include a review of procedures on back office, staff management, and hiring building staff.

Citizenship Exam: Test Preparation VARIOUS

Prerequisite: English as a Second Language I or the proven ability to speak and write EnglishPrepare for the U.S. Citizenship Examination. Study U.S. history and gov-ernment structure, practice the citizen-ship interview, and review the questions on the newest version of the citizenship exam. Cleaning: Products and Techniques SIx 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Prerequisite: Appropriate reading level, or high school diploma, or GEDUnderstand how to safely use cleaning chemicals, machinery, and equipment according to industry and OSHA guide-lines. Learn which cleaning agents, equip-ment, and techniques are appropriate for various surfaces. Acquire strategies for low-impact environmental cleaning and housekeeping. Learn to operate and maintain floor care machines. Training will include lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on practices. partner: new york city housing authority

Combustion Safety Testing ONE 3-HOUR SESSION

Learn to identify the CAZ (Combustion Appliance Zone) worst-case scenarios, calculate depressurization limits, calcu-late proper chimney draft according to outside air conditions, and be introduced to the tools (manometers, combustion efficiency analyzers) to perform these tests. Also learn to properly evaluate the results of diagnostic testing and the current BPI guidelines to address deficiencies or hazardous conditions uncovered during testing.

Business Writing 11 WEEKS

Prerequisite: Appropriate reading level, or high school diploma, or GED Improve your writing and enhance your communication skills. Learn to write an effective business letter and memo, and how to update your résumé. Through interactive exercises and one-on-one feedback become a more effective writer.See page 19 to learn more about taking this course online.

Carpentry Basics 11 WEEKS

Prerequisites: Appropriate reading and math level, or high school diploma, or GED, successful completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, Tools of the Trade (Test Out available)Operate tools within industry guide-lines; make minor floor, wall, and ceiling repairs; and perform basic carpentry tasks. Identify materials, tools, and repair techniques. Learn to diagnose problems and perform minor repairs through hands-on experience.

Chemical Safety in the WorkplaceONE 3-HOUR SESSION

Learn about the hazards associated with common chemicals found in the workplace and how to best protect yourself. Gain knowledge of OSHA’s hazard communication requirements, hazardous materials, material safety data sheets, and personal protective equipment. Also learn about the safe handling and use of chemicals and spill-prevention techniques.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Undergo an intensive training program that raises awareness about emergencies and disasters and provides basic response skills needed for fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, and traffic control. Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) 11 WEEKS

Prerequisites: Blueprint Reading and Computer IIILearn the fundamentals of Computer-Assisted Design (CAD), utilizing Auto-CAD. The course focuses on the principles and conventions of CAD as used by the drafting/engineering professional, including drawing tools, poly-lines, layers, text, and dimensioning.

Prerequisite: Must hold FDNY Certificate of Fitness for Standpipe and Sprinkler SystemsMaster material needed to success- fully pass the FDNY Certificate of Fitness Exams for S-11 (Residential Sprinkler Systems), S-12 (Citiwide Sprin-kler Systems), S-13 (Citiwide Standpipe Systems), and S-14 (Multi-Zoned Standpipe Systems). Inglés como segundo idioma II: Conversación y comunicación11 SEMANAS

Requisito previo: Finalización satisfactoria del curso de inglés como segundo idioma I, referencias del instructor o puntaje adecuado en el examen estandarizado de inglés como segundo idioma. Aprenderá a conversar en contextos laborales y socia-les y a escribir mensajes cortos. Analizará temas relacionados con el lugar de trabajo y repasará las lecturas realizadas dentro y fuera del salón de clases. Se sentirá más cómodo con el inglés oral y escrito.

Inglés como segundo idioma III: Debates, lectura y escritura11 SEMANAS

Requisito previo: Finalización satisfactoria del curso de inglés como segundo idioma II, referencias del instructor o puntaje adec-uado en el examen estandarizado de inglés como segundo idioma. Podrá expresar ideas complejas y comunicarse de manera efec-tiva en el entorno laboral. Comprenderá el significado y el uso adecuado de todos los tiempos verbales y estará preparado para tomar el curso de lectura y escritura. A través de debates, lectura y escritura, los estudiantes aprenderán a utilizar expresiones idiomáticas y a intercambiar información de complejidad.

Limpieza ecológica y mantenimientoUNA SESIÓN DE 3 HORAS

Adquiera estrategias para la limpieza y mantenimiento ecológico de bajo impacto y la disposición apropiada de desperdicios líquidos. El objetivo del “mantenimiento ecológico” es minimizar la contaminación de las áreas ocupadas por parte de los contaminantes químicos, biológicos o de partículas, y también reducir la polución en la tierra, agua y aire.

Limpieza ecológica para la salud y la eficienciaCINCO SESIONES DE 2 HORAS

Comprenda los principios de un pro-grama de limpieza ecológico y aprenda cómo los limpiadores de oficinas pueden ayudar a que los edificios reduzcan el desperdicio y mejoren la calidad del aire en interiores. Los limpiadores de oficinas son los ojos y oídos de un edificio com-ercial ya que trabajan regularmente en espacios de inquilinos y áreas comunes.
