With the same innovative spirit that has been at the heart of Longwood for over 100 years, we scoured the globe to bring you performances this season with an international flare, featuring seven Grammy Award winners. Delight in the spectacular jazz, organ, and classical performances you love, while sampling a new lineup of artists in our A World of Music Series. Globe-trotting doesn’t stop there as we debut the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition, where young artists compete for the world’s largest organ prize.

2012–2013 Performance Series

Come Be Inspired Our Gardens are a living canvas that showcase an unmatched lineup of artists. This year we offer six different performance series that span our artistic history and vision.

A World of Music Series

Open yourself up to new worlds and embark on a journey of Celtic lore, flamenco fusion, tribal vocals, classic Americana, and more. We present international artists from Spain, Ireland, the US, South Africa, and more in this diverse series.

Carillon Series Meet The Longwood Carillon, an instrument that spans the ages. Our Carillon, crafted in The Netherlands, features 62 cast bells that ring throughout the Gardens.

Classical Series Akin to classical garden design steeped in tradition yet made fresh in our horticultural displays, our classical series presents some of today’s best artists making masterworks for the piano, violin, voice, and chamber ensemble new again.

Jazz Series

This season’s series features classy veterans who have set the standard to young lions taking the jazz scene by storm, all capturing the spirit of jazz that knows no boundaries in exhilarating, intimate performances.

Organ Series The Longwood Organ is among the world’s great concert organs, with 146 ranks and 10,010 pipes. Newly restored in 2011, the organ captures an orchestral sound like no other. Hear it played by the most talented organists of today in our Ballroom.

OrKID Day Series

OrKID Days are fun for the whole family and help our youngest visitors appreciate gardens through music! Enjoy a free family concert and explore orchids first-hand at discovery stations.

A World of Music SeriesPeter Yarrow Friday, October 19 8 pm Platinum recording artist and Grammy winner Peter Yarrow, known for his legendary trio Peter, Paul & Mary, now performs as a solo artist. He is renowned for his creative, touching, and engaging folk music that has inspired audiences for generations with songs such as “Puff, the Magic Dragon.”

Organ SeriesOlivier LatryFriday, October 268 pm Olivier Latry is the titular organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris. One of the world’s most distinguished organists, Latry has received numerous awards and honors, including the Prix Del Duca in 2000 and the 2007 Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Organists.

Jazz SeriesChristian McBride and Inside Straight Saturday, November 10 8 pm Bandleader and jazz bassist Christian McBride presents hard swing-to bluesy groove tunes with his acoustic jazz quintet Inside Straight. He has been a go-to bassist for many artists, including Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Diana Krall, and Sting. McBride won his first Grammy Award in 2012.


Organ SeriesJeff Fowler Sunday, November 11 1 pm Organist Jeff Fowler has been a church musician since 1970 and the minister of music at Wayne Presbyterian Church since 1992.


A World of Music SeriesBuika Saturday, October 27 8 pm Flamenco singer Buika has been hailed as the “Flamenco Queen.” Buika is part of a new generation of flamenco performers who are engaging audiences by mixing in other influences. A World of Music SeriesBarbara Cook Thursday, November 1 8 pm Barbara Cook’s silvery soprano, purity of tone, and warm presence have delighted audiences for more than 50 years. Considered “Broadway’s favorite ingénue” during the heyday of the Broadway musical, Cook has launched a second career as a concert and recording artist.

We’ll put the stars in your eyes this holiday season as you wander through half a million twinkling lights, thousands of poinsettias and magnificent Christmas trees. Holiday Jazz with John PizzarelliThursday, December 68 pm Jazz up your holiday season with John Pizzarelli—a world-renowned jazz guitarist and singer. He is part of a select group of Ella Fitzgerald Award winners along with names like Aretha Franklin, Tony Bennett, and Harry Connick, Jr.


An Nollaig in Éirinn with DanúSunday, December 23 & 7 pm Irish ensemble Danú celebrates a traditional Irish Christmas with An Nollaig in Éirinn. Celtic music lovers are thrilled by the ensemble’s virtuoso players on fiddle, flutes, button accordion, percussion, and the voice of Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh.

A World of Music SeriesLadysmith Black MambazoSaturday, January 268 pm Ladysmith Black Mambazo rose to worldwide fame as a result of their collaboration with Paul Simon on his album Graceland, and since then have won numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards. As South African cultural ambassadors, they sing in the traditional vocal styles of isicathamiya and mbube.

Recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994 and the 2008 ‘Genius Grant’ from the MacArthur Foundation, she performs a program of works by Brahms, Schumann, Beethoven, Falla, and Kurtag.


A World of Music SeriesMolly RingwaldSaturday, February 238 pm Featured in the films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink, iconic ’80s movie star Molly Ringwald is an actress, singer and dancer. Introduced to jazz by her father, Ringwald is now fulfilling her lifelong love of jazz and the great American songbook by releasing her new CD in 2013.

Performing interpretations of Renaissance music with hints of jazz, gospel, and other bold, new music, it is known as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker magazine.

Organ Series Peter Richard Conte, organand Jeremy Filsell, piano Friday, May 3 8 pm Peter Richard Conte is Longwood’s Principal Organist and the Grand Court Organist of the Wanamaker Organ.

Pianist and Organist Jeremy Filsell is the Artist in Residence at the Washington National Cathedral.

Together Conte and Filsell will perform an arrangement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 for organ and piano.

International Organ Competition June 18–22, 2013

Organists from around the globe compete in the inaugural Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition for the $40,000 Pierre S. du Pont First Prize, the largest cash prize of any organ competition in the world. Experience the preliminary and final round as 10 of the organ world’s brightest young talents compete before a panel of renowned judges in a quest for the top prize.
