station

• space of 2188 square feet. The building’s interior shell measures roughly 20’ x 120’ –making it an extremely long building

• serves small plate food ($10-11 per plate), raw foods, creative and experimental endeavors. “modern American tavern”

• uniquely-combined ingredients and textures, locally-sourced , hand-crafted cuisine from local, innovative and experimental chef, Neal Brown, and the third restaurant opening of his career

• drinks menu will feature creative, artisanal cocktails – a level of quality rarely ever seen in the last hundred years

• bartenders will be showmen and purveyors on information• encourages a pace that is not rushed, it should be an experience• place for everyone, introduces fun into the experience - attracts rebels and artists – this is

not a stuffy place

The Client…• "As a restaurant owner, my responsibility is to offer people meaningful time together. The food is the catalyst for that time." - Neal

Brown• Prides himself on housemade supplemental ingredients and use only the finest ingredients. “You won’t find a maraschino cherry

anywhere in The Libertine!”• Delights in combining food together in interesting and unique ways – menu items include the unexpected take on chicken and

waffles and flights of bacon• Considers his brand high-end where technique and polish is extremely important. He will deliver exceptional quality and creative

pairings by a staff that is friendly and knowledgeable.• Needed to open the restaurant before the conclusion of this project, so we agreed that the scope

of this project would focus around a second renovation that would occur after the first year’s proven success.

38 East Washington is one of the oldest buildings in Indianapolis is referenced in Historical documents for the City of Indianapolis as early as 1859, but other historical documents indicate that it was a mercantile as early as 1839.. It was built in the early- to mid-1800’s by one of the founders and first surveyors of Indianapolis who came here as early as 1821. Daniel Yandes ran a general store here and then as early as 1857, it was a leather goods and hides store. After Yandesdied, the store became a men’s tailoring shop and haberdashery. Around the turn of the century, it was a shoe store.

Because the current layout is fixed at this time, I developed bubble diagramming and activity mapping to help understand movement throughout the space There will be three bartenders at peak times. The only movement they would have would be to refill ice bins during non-peak times. Due to all staff members using the small corridor, it could create congestion during peak time

• Short and squat exterior with little architectural interest, aesthetic draw and

incongruence between branding and visual appeal

• Lack of Host/Hostess Area to Guide Patrons

• Small seating capacity and lack of comfortable waiting area space

• Inefficient travel pathways for bartenders

• Limited and non-flexible seating arrangements

• Too loud for comfortable patron conversation levels when near capacity

• Sole server area is located in the middle of the bar in prime patron real estate

• Restrooms lack any sort of indication of the bar’s brand and the finishes are

not durable and appropriate for a commercial restroom

• While the bar design is clearly nice, there is not a specific focus on the bar area

where all the main entertainment occurs

• The exhibition kitchen bar height is too high for comfortable dining

• Lack of electrical outlets and storage in small kitchen

A space masculine enough to make men feel confident and strong and…handsomely beautiful enough to make the women swoon

The design for The Libertine harkens back to a day when quality and showmanship mattered. The design should have historic references while maintaining a modern and hip feeling. It should be somewhat dark and brooding to appeal to the rebel and artist who will be drawn to Brown’s unique flavor of culinary artistry. But it should not be taken too seriously and should foster a lively crowd. It is important to infuse an element of fun, unexpectedness and creativity inthe space and reject strict seriousness.

• Antique Elements• Masculine touches• Feminine Glamour• Classical architecture• Mood Lighting
