Dear Friends,

2012 was an exciting year for Girl Scouts on the Delmarva Peninsula and all over the world. We celebrated our 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouting movement and the 50th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay.

The year began with the Year of the Girl Kickoff in Washington, D.C. GSCB was one of only four councils invited to participate in this special event with GSUSA and Congressional female leadership. As you will read in this report, our Girl Scouts returned to Washington for leadership opportunities several times throughout the year, including a trip to the White House.

Locally, we honored our highest achieving Girl Scouts with two On My Honor celebrations. Girl Scouts received their Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards, as well as a new award created by GSCB, the 13-year Pin, recognizing girls who have been Girl Scouts for their entire school career. More than 500 guests attended each event to support their daughters, granddaughters, sisters and friends. (13-year Girl Scouts pictured top of page.)

In October, we were honored by a visit to Delaware by our national Chief Executive Officer, Anna Maria Chávez. Anna Maria’s message of the importance of supporting girls’ leadership was well received. (Pictured to the left with GS Volunteers Pam Yarbough, Joan Przywara, Betsy Wenny, Lyn Gill and First Lady Carla Markell.)

Providing girls with opportunities to develop their leadership skills in a safe and nurturing environment is more important than ever. As we close out our stellar 100th year and enter a new century as an organization, we have more challenges and opportunities than ever before. Girls are busier today, and there is more competition for their time. We are working to meet this challenge by continuing to focus on being the premiere leadership organization for girls through strong programming in financial literacy, anti-bullying and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The smiling faces of Girl Scouts in this report remind us why our mission is important— to create girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. On the cover, you’ll see Troop 1101 from Wilmington, Delaware. This troop of Girl Scout Juniors takes our mission to heart. Last year, they raised funds through the Girl Scout Cookie Program to help take care of animals at the Delaware Humane Society. They are just one example of how our Girl Scouts give back to the community. Partner with us and you can help make a difference too. Thank you for your continued support.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Anne T. HoganChief Executive Officer

Fund development raised more than $933,000 through public support, United Way, In-Kind Donations and Special Fundraising Events. Highlights for the year include the Today Media Foundation’s Best of Delaware, the Centennial Celebration at the Queen, the 2nd Annual Thin Mint 5K Run/Walk and Women of Distinction events across the peninsula.

while new programming was developed around the badges in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. GSCB continued strong science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming as well as focusing on battling bullying through the new Be a Friend First (BFF) anti-bullying program launched in 2012.

A special thank you to Capital One (formerly ING Direct), for their Orange Days of Caring at Camp Country Center, where 75 volunteers did landscaping and maintenance. Capital One also provided a $25,000 grant for supplies for the day. Additional projects were completed by DuPont volunteers and AmeriCorps at various camps valued at more than $10,000.

GSCB’s “best” were recognized in 2012 at On My Honor: A Celebration of Achievement, held in May and November. More than 500 people were in attendance for each event . On My Honor recognized Girl Scout Gold, Silver and Bronze Award recipients, 10-year Girl Scouts and graduating Seniors. In November, the new 13-Year Pin was presented to 13 Girl Scout Ambassadors. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award girls can earn in Girl Scouting and represents the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “Going for the Gold.” Approximately 5 percent of girls complete the Award.

Three women were honored as Women of Distinction: Delaware’s First Lady, Carla Markell, Maureen Scott-Taylor and Connie Strott.

At the Annual Meeting in April, top volunteers received awards, including Years of Service pins. (See page 3.)

The Year of the Girl2012 marked the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA and the 50th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay. Special anniversary events and programs took place all year. Highlights included a three day Ocean City birthday celebration with 1,200 girls and adults, the Centennial Celebration Gala at the Queen and an archive exhibit at the Delaware History Museum.

Legislators and government officials recognized the Year of the Girl, including Governor Jack Markell, the Delaware General Assembly, the City of Wilmington, New Castle County as well as Maryland Delegate Addie Eckardt and numerous other towns throughout the peninsula.

GSUSA CEO Anna Maria Chávez visited Delaware on Thursday, October 18. Ms. Chávez brought a dynamic message about the importance of supporting girls’ leadership to the Rotary Club of Wilmington, Girl Scouts and adult volunteers, and an evening reception for donors and supporters. Chávez also visited with U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Delaware First Lady Carla Markell.

Just for fun, the Flat Juliette program encouraged girls to bring Juliette with them on their travels, and girls planted daisies all over the peninsula.

Girl Scouts of Accomack and Northampton Counties, VA recovered a 25-year old time capsule which was buried by Girl Scouts in 1987.

GSCB visits its nation’s leaders

...and to respect myself and others...

In February, 28 girls along with staff and volunteers were part of the national kickoff for The Year of the Girl and the ToGetHerThere campaign. Four Girl Scout councils joined GSUSA and Congressional Women leaders for the event. Afterwards, the girls had lunch with the Delaware Congressional delegation. 900 from GSCB attended the national sing-a-long and celebration, “Rock the Mall.”

Girl Scout Senior Kristen Parker introduced Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States, to an audience of GSUSA executives and council CEOs and board chairs from all over the nation.

Two GSCB girls were among five from across the United States who attended the presentation of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the family of Juliette Gordon Low at the White House, where they met President Barack Obama.

ToGetHerThere is the largest, boldest advocacy and fundraising cause dedicated to girls’ leadership in the nation’s history. Kicked off in New York City

on January 31, and with GSCB girls in D.C., the multi-year effort will seek to create balanced

leadership — the equal representation of women in leadership positions in all sectors and levels of society — within one generation. GSCB used

the ToGetHerThere message in advocacy meetings with legislators, in speeches by Chief Executive Officer Anne T. Hogan to Rotary clubs and other organizations, as well as in advertising.

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay represented the Girl Scouting movement in Washington, D.C. many times in 2012.

These unique opportunities brought our message of the importance of girls’ leadership to national leaders.

The Delaware General Assembly passed House Joint Resolution No. 35, with joint sponsorship from Honorary Troop 1912, encompassing all of the women legislators in the General Assembly. Governor Markell also presented GSCB with a proclamation declaring 2012 as The Year of the Girl.

Maryland Delegate Addie Eckardt presented GSCB with proclamations in honor of the Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary.

When girls succeed, so does society. Take the pledge today! www.togetherthere.org
