Over the next week or so we will acknowledge and present the above students who have recently been appointed to these positions of responsibility at the relevant assemblies. It is a great thing to present them with the appropriate badge of office and I wish them well as they begin their time in these positions of responsibility.
I also take time to acknowledge those students who may have nominated for leadership positions but who have, on this occasion, missed out. It is important that they realise that the College recognises and thanks them for their interest in these important positions. Unfortunately, not everyone can be appointed to these roles and I commend all students for expressing their interest in these positions. I would encourage them to apply again next time and know that through a consistent effort they will be acknowledged appropriately by the College!

Car Park – Important Safety Reminders I take this opportunity at the beginning of the new school year to remind all members of the College community of some of the key issues relating to the safe use of car parks and driveways at the College.
The car parks and driveways are very busy both in the morning and afternoon each day and I remind everyone that it is vital that extreme care is taken when driving in this area. There is a 15km speed limit in place at the College, designated spaces for handicapped vehicles are available, and I urge everyone to be patient and take their time when driving on College property. It is disappointing to see vehicles regularly using the spaces reserved for handicapped vehicles, or parking in areas which are not designed for parking and some vehicles being driven well above the designated 15km per hour speed limit!
I would ask that parents give clear instructions and regular reminders to their sons and daughters to use the pathways adjacent to the car park rather than walking or running across the parking bays. It can be difficult to see little people when sitting in a car and it is vital that we take every step possible to avoid any tragic accidents in our car parks! To help minimise the risk of an accident, it is important that all pedestrians stick to the pathways and that all drivers take great care and employ patience when driving on College property!
These guidelines about entering and using the car parks are regularly addressed with students at both campuses of the College! Reinforcing these at home with your children will assist us in keeping the College a safe place for everyone!
Swimming On Monday evening the College conducted its Swimming Championships at the Albury Swimming Centre. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those students from Years 5‐12 who competed in various events in the twilight meet! The evening was a perfect setting and there were some tremendous performances across the age groups and for some students it was a pretty busy night with little time between the events for the various strokes!
Thanks must also go to Mr Nick Payne, (Acting) Head of Sport at the College and his troop of staff and student helpers. The event was well organised and ran very smoothly – well done to all involved, especially Mr Payne!
This event has provided the College with a good opportunity to select a competitive team to represent Trinity at BISSA. I take this opportunity to thank
Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, Week Ending 10 February 2012Page 4
all students for their contributions to the Swimming Championships and wish those chosen to represent the College at the next level the best of luck in the coming weeks!

From the Deputy Principal
At Trinity, our students have an excellent record in performing well in academic competitions. Please discuss these competitions with your children and register using the nomination form that is part of this newsletter. To enter you need to fill in the nomination form and return the form (without payment) to your child’s Pastoral Care Tutor. The entry amounts will be included as part of your Term 2 Student Accounts.
Students can test themselves against other students of the same age, from different schools, and from different parts of Australia by entering all or some of the student academic competitions on offer. These competitions are for students in Years 3 through to 12.
Please check carefully that the age group for the competition is appropriate for your child. The nomination form should be returned with the students name and Year group filled in by Monday 12 March. As these competitions have strict rules associated with closing dates no nominations will be accepted after this date. From the Senior School
The start of the school year has been very smooth for most students. Apart from some problems finding the right classrooms and having the right books for class all students have settled in well and are getting back into the routine of school.
The Year 7 Camp has once again proven to be a great success. I was lucky enough to spend an evening with the students and it was really good to see friendships being formed and all new students being integrated into activities and performances. The feedback from the staff who attended the camp was that the behaviour of our students was fantastic and they were all impressed with the level of participation in the activities.
All students in Year 7 and 10 received an immunisation form last week. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, these need to be brought back to school if you wish your son/daughter to be part of the immunisation programme. If you haven’t yet received your form, it may be a good idea to check your son/daughter’s school bag.
Can I remind parents about our policy regarding the use of mobile phones at the College. All mobile phones need to be turned off before the bell rings for the start of the school day and are not allowed to be turned on again until the end of the school day. All students are aware of the consequences if they do not adhere to this policy. If a parent needs to contact a student through the school day can you please do so through the front office (6049 3400).

From the Campus Coordinator – Wodonga
Welcome back to all students, family, and staff of Trinity College to what promises to be a productive and busy 2012. We welcome a large number of new families into the Wodonga campus Junior School and ELC community. It has been pleasing to see how quickly each of our students has settled into the College and is a great reflection of not only those students, but the welcoming nature of our student body.
Our Active After School Sports programme commenced on Monday, 13 February and will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm. Our two coaches, Matt Shirley and Jarrod Lindner come with great experience in this programme and it will be an excellent programme in 2012 for your child to be involved with. Already on Monday, 25 students attended.
A number of correspondence items have gone home to start the year and I remind parents of the importance of checking their child’s diary and bag to make sure they are getting all the information the College is sending home. It is important that on letters containing permission slips, medical details or family verification information that they are returned as soon as possible so that we can make sure our records are accurately maintained.
We are looking for parent helpers to assist with a range of classes across the Junior School, but particularly in the Prep class and Year 4‐6 Food Technology sessions. A Parent Induction session was held on Thursday, 9 February which was well supported. Any parent who missed this session and is still interested in becoming a parent helper can speak to Mr Fairall, either in person or via email to arrange a time to complete the College Induction session.
It has been great to see the students return in such as positive manner. I have been happy with the way the students have presented in their uniforms, hair and general presentation. I do remind parents and students to read the front of the students College diary so that all members of the College are clear on our rules. I ask all parents to support the College and make sure your child is complying with our expectations.
With Term 1 well under way, I encourage families to continually look at the College calendar to see events that are coming up this term at the Wodonga campus.

Junior School News ‐ Albury
The You Can Do It (YCDI) programme is off and running in our Junior classrooms. Students are actively engaging in activities and developing the language within the program. Merits are being awarded on a daily basis for one, many or all of the keys (as described below).
You Can Do It! Education’s main purpose is to support communities, schools, and homes in a collective effort to optimise the social, emotional, and academic outcomes of all young people. Its unique contribution is in identifying the social and emotional capabilities that all young people need to acquire in order to be successful in school, experience wellbeing, and have positive relationships including making contributions to others and the community (good citizenship).
YCDI’s mission is to realise, through the following beliefs and actions: The building of social, emotional, and motivational capacity of young people
rather than on their problems and deficits. The encouragement of prevention, promotion, and intervention efforts
(school, home and community) in order to build the social and emotional strengths of young people.
The development of a strength‐building approach, where YCDI seeks to build the capabilities of adults (community, school, home) associated with positive outcomes in young people.
The 5 Keys of YCDI! Education Our core purpose is the development of young people’s social and emotional capabilities, including:
1. Confidence (academic, social) 2. Persistence 3. Organisation 4. Getting Along, and 5. Resilience.
Careers
Library “Careers Wall”
Chris O’Loan Head of Junior School
Students may have noticed an addition to the library this year. The red and grey “careers wall” has lots of information about universities, TAFE, careers,
Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, Week Ending 10 February 2012Page 9
apprenticeships, scholarships, and Youth Allowance. It is updated regularly. The information is available for student or parent borrowing. Currently I am organizing the DVD’s ready for borrowing as well.
Focus On Early Information Sessions for TAFE and University It’s never too early to start considering your future career directions. Making decisions about what you would like to study after school can be both stressful and exciting. Many students often feel lost about what they would like to study and many feel like they don’t know where to start!
There are so many things to consider‐ complete year 12 or leave early? TAFE or University? Have a gap year or go straight into further study? Can I afford to move away if I can’t study locally?
For students and their families who haven’t been to a University or TAFE information session, there are even more questions ‐ where can I study the course I am interested in? How do I choose between several courses across several institutions? How much will my course cost? How do I find out about scholarships? What if I don’t get the ATAR I need? What is University and TAFE actually like?
These decisions can be difficult to make, and then you have the added pressure of focusing on your studies and other commitments like sport and employment.
Not only can it be tough for students, but also for parents! Where do we access information? How do we best support our child? How can we afford the costs associated with further study? Will Youth Allowance and HECS‐HELP be available?
Apart from meeting with your career adviser early in the year, it is a great idea to attend information sessions run by tertiary institutions. Many run focus days and information seminars throughout the year, and all run Open Days in August.
By attending information sessions ‐ you and your family will be able to do the following:
Speak directly to current students and lecturers and hear from them about the courses in which you are interested.
Look around the campus and get a feel for the culture of the institution (i.e., does it have a modern or traditional feel? Do you think it would be easy to meet people? Would you prefer to study at a small campus or a large one?)
Learn about scholarships, course costs, government fee assistance, global exchange and accommodation options
Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, Week Ending 10 February 2012Page 10
Ask about alternative pathway programmes available as a backup in case you don’t get the ATAR you need for your course
Attend workshops and sessions on the courses you are interested in and compare facilities and students services between institutions.
Attending information sessions will assist you in setting new career goals or firming up ideas you already have. Having a course or courses in mind can also assist you in feeling more motivated to work hard at school.
Information sessions are usually free and you have to register. Start to map out session dates on a calendar and pick the ones you will be able to attend. Here are some tertiary information programmes to get you started:
University of Melbourne ‐ ‘Meet Melbourne’: sessions will be held in various locations across Victoria between March and August. To find out when the closest Meet Melbourne seminar is being run and to register, go to www.futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/meetmelbourne
University of Melbourne ‐ ‘Access All Areas’: sessions are run on campus and are for year 12 students only. The first session will be held Friday 13 April at the Parkville Campus. For more information please contact http://futurestudents.unimelb.edu.au/explore/events
Charles Sturt University ‐ ‘MyDay’ CSU: will showcase over 40 courses on various dates up until June. March events include environmental science, teaching, arts, psychology, social work, business, IT & computing. To register, contact Judy Walsh at [email protected] or 02 6338 6010
RMIT ‐ ‘Get Real Experience’ School Holiday Programs: If you are in years 10 – 12 and are passionate about science, engineering or health, you have the opportunity to attend a ‘Get Real Experience’ School Holiday Program at RMIT in your area of interest. To find out what workshops are running and when, go to www.rmit.edu.au/experiencedays
La Trobe University ‐ ‘Talk and Tour’: held on Friday April 13 (TBC).
Monash University ‐ ‘At Monash Seminar Series’: showcases different faculties within the University. The seminars run over several months and students have to book in advance. Students will be able to attend seminars in areas such as engineering, arts, sport, education, health, design etc. Check the following link for dates: www.monash.edu.au/study/options/schools/at‐monash.html
Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, Week Ending 10 February 2012Page 11
Deakin University ‐ ‘Discover Deakin’: events run at different campuses over several months. Dates for 2011 have not been released yet. More information will be released in a future newsletter.
HSC & Careers Expo The Western Sydney HSC & Careers Expo will held on 23 – 24 June at the Sydney Showground. See Ms Widdicombe for more details.
UMAT Preparation I have received information about preparation for the UMAT test using the services of MEDENTRY. The UMAT test is designed to be an aptitude test, and as such, is difficult to prepare for. There is similar value in completing the online sample questions, for free. Therefore, I am not recommending this course. However, if you would like to access the information you can contact www.MedEntry.edu.au or see for the brochure which I have in the careers office.
The UMAT is an aptitude test used as entry selection criteria to a number of medical and health related courses. Year 12 students considering entering any health related field should check the ACER website for the list of courses that require applicants to have completed the UMAT. http://umat.acer.edu.au/ Applications open in April.
Student Exchange Programmes A lot of information comes my way about student exchange programmes and “GAP” programs. The information for these is displayed for students in the Library next to the red and grey “Careers Wall” on the western wall in the library.

P & F News
The Trinity College P&F Association would like to wish all families a happy and successful new school year and we extend a huge welcome to the large number of families who are new to the College. Our role in the College is varied, but can be basically broken down into two main areas. We provide financial and physical support as identified and requested by the College and, most importantly, we work to build on what is already a strong sense of community at the College.
Our first meeting for the year is being held on Tuesday, 28 February at 7.00 pm in the Albury Campus library. At this meeting all executive positions will be declared vacant and elections held. New faces and new ideas are what keeps our Association vibrant and fresh, so could I ask all parents to consider nominating for a position or, alternatively, becoming a regular contributor at P&F meetings throughout the year.
