Battle Royal the ultimate Karaoke contest

Karaoke... an ancient art form that is both respected and appreciated across all of Asia more than any other place in the world. But on one particularly cold Thursday night in December, it was Chinatown LA that would hold the title of karaoke capital of the world.

Like all karaoke outings, the night started cool and calm. Some catching up and chatting among friends, a few drinks to take off the edge... If there is one thing of note at Pickled Possum, besides cold beer,is it’s the massive song selection... one of the grander selections of songs I’ve seen in LA. Rock, rap, metal, chick stuff, classic rock, etc... it’s all there. I remember us tackling a varied selection of tunes ranging from Eminem to Def Leppard and Wham to the Backstreet Boys,... all kinds of stuff and we rocked the house indeed.

Late into the night, another party of karaoke’s entered the room and suddenly a new game was a foot, the game of “which group can out perform the other”, a delicate and scheming game indeed. Our opposing crew opted for a song selection chock full of show tunes and girlie music... argh! How can I be expected to rock out to Korn when I’m following up a song by Britney.... honestly I don’t remember what songs exactly they were picking, but I do remember their selection was killing our momentum.

After a long, intense and physical battle, in the end, a truce was called. All that remained was their final song selection “A Whole New World” and they were missing a qualified male lead for the duet... so I stepped up to the mic…

Tough ol’ bag Benefits of the old stalwart suitcase of the good old days

What a day! We made it back at the hotel and I’m in pain!!! Jumping on the bus bright and early this morning we experienced the world’s worst driver!!! He did not stop jabbering the whole time to Chatuchak markets, oh my God!! He was even pointing out bloody McDonalds! Huh?

Dropped by the side of the road, with our trusty suitcases ready to compete for the ultimate prize, we headed in to the deep dark depths of the famous crowded market. The sights, smells, sounds of these markets are hard to describe, however picture yourself at the boxing day sales, jammed in to lift with fifty other frenetic shoppers all thinking that they are after the same cheap t-shirt. Not everyone would have showered, the temperature is rising past forty degrees and the smell of stir fry is in the wafting through the air.

After some frenetic shopping, hard driven bargains and a few bumps and bruises my trusty “old school” Caribee suitcase was bulging at the seams! This is it’s twelfth tour of duty to the Chatuchak markets and it has never let me down. It’s solid square construction, lightweight aluminium trolley and skimmer free flow wheels have stood the ultimate test and got my precious bargains back to base once again.

Hydration is an essential part of fitness and wellbeing. Any dehydration is serious as it will take 24 to 36 hours to recover from the effects, and that’s considering that the fluids are replaced.

What is the cause of dehydration.The body sweats to cool itself - this advanced system of external cooling allowed our ancestor to chase down sprinting animals in marathon hunting sessions. Now with so many modern distraction we don’t focus on servicing this essential feature of our body. Sweating with exercise especially in hot weather will quickly drain the body of essential hydration. Many will compound this with not drinking enough water at the right times and only drinking when thirsty.

What are the effects of dehydrationYour body is 60-65% water, a 1% loss of water will begin to reduce your performance. From 2% on the body will no longer be able to regulate heat and there will be a loss of strength and general endurance. 3% dehydration reduces muscular endurance and increases physical and mental fatigue. At 4-6% you can suffer further reduction in muscular strength, further reduction in endurance and also heat cramps. At greater then 6% loss of water dehydration can lead to some of the following effects: Severe heat cramps, Heat exhaustion, Heatstroke, coma and death.

Watch for the signs of Heat illness: Headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, mental and physical fatigue, confusion and lack of concentration. Most of us will be familiar with some of these symptoms due to have hangovers (alcohol induced dehydration causing some of the same effects in the body.

A quick guide to how hydrated you are can be easily accomplished with urine-watching, dark urination means your body doesn’t have enough water to flush all the toxins from the kidneys. Clear urination means over hydration or alcohol has stunned kidney function. Apple juice is a quick guide for a good healthy urine/hydration colour.

When to hydrateIt is essential to drink when thirsty but often too late. It will take you 24 to 36 hours to recover from dehydration ‘damage’. Thirst-drinking will only replace up to 50% of an athletes hydration needs. Even without exercise your body likes to have

approximately 20 mouthfuls of water for women and children and 30 mouthfuls of water for men per day.

At high altitude, in hot conditions or during exercise you will increase your need to hydrate. You should also find what rate you sweat out water. As a guide you can Weight yourself before and after

exercise, this will tell you how much water you lost. If you loose 1kg in 1 hour then you’ve lost 1L of water and therefore need to drink 2 mouthfuls every 15 minutes of exercise.

How to choose a hydration pack1. How long will I need to be hydrating for:

A. Sprint - Under 1 hour = 1.5L bladder

B. Event - Up to 2 hours = 2L bladder

C. Tour - 3 hours or over = 3L bladder

D. Various - Get a 3 litre, fill as needed and remove the excess air

2. Do I need cargo space: Consider hydration ready daypacks Urban environment: Fugitive, Retreat Sport: Aquatec, Recon, Patriot, Merlin, Ridge Runner Snowboarding/Skating: Pivot Hiking/Trekking: Trail, Adriatic

3. How agile do I need to be: slimline packs like Hydra, Oasis, Nuke and Stealth will allow hydration without the drawback of increased encumbrance.

Thieves everywherejust don’t wear your back pack on your front!

Thieves are everywhere, especially pick pocketers. This age old profession is has been around for hundreds of years, here is an insight into their slimy trade. Three key necessities for a pocket thief are: a backpack (not a Caribee pack) or “hoodie” with large pockets, a razor blade to cut closed pockets and a place to dump unwanted stolen goods.

These undesirables usually loiter in crowded areas, so any tourist area is high on their preference. The hustle and bustle of a famous landmark or the tight confines of public transport allow their unwanted tentacles to circulate with little or no awareness. Their “mark” is any typical person, minding their own business, who will just happen to lose their wallet to you today. Their easiest targets tend to have their wallets just peeking out of their back pocket. These thieves don’t feel guilty nor to they harbour any remorse, you are just another lemming in their quest to feed their insatiable thirst.

What do we recommend? Well you don’t need to over compensate and look like the ultimate tourist, you know the ones, the numb nuts who wear their backpacks on their front – doesn’t this just scream, “I don’t belong hear, look at me!”. Be wary and vigilant. Any thing you don’t need with you, don’t take. Leave it in your room safe. Wear jeans, their tough material and tight pockets make theft more difficult and finally, have your Caribee back pack on you, it may not stop the pick pocketers, but when you notice them it will give them a nice wack to the back of their heads!

Synthetic sleeping bags are very easy to care for, simply handwash in a mild solution of soapy water. Thoroughly rinse in fresh water and hang out in a warm dry place out of direct sunlight. Do not dry clean.

Heat shield technology

“Heat Shield Technology” employs a layer of specially developed silver non-woven lining into the fill of the Cosmic X sleeping bags. This improves heat insulation through reflection of radiated heat by 20% compared to sleeping bags without this technology. The heat shield lining has been tested and approved by the C.S.I.R.O. and provides superior thermal comfort while it affording a reduction in the overall bulk of the sleeping bag.

The large main bedroom, with 2m headroom, and a fully enclosed front vestibule provide a vast amount of living space. What is a water column test and how does it affect my tent?The water column test measures the level of PU coating, which is being used for making nylon and polyester tents waterproof. Eg: 1000mm, means that there can be 1000mm water pressure per 1cm² on the tent fabric, before it starts leaking through. From 800mm on the material can really be called waterproof however it’s better to have a higher value, because there is a possibility that the coating wears out and the value decreases.

Caribee was the first company in Australia to introduce the folding camp chair.
