Ride theWind

STORY BY CARYN HALLER I PHOTOS BY SHANNON LITZ, JIM GRANT

Amazing. That’s how I’d describe my first glider ride last November at SoaringNV. It was a cold morning after the first storm of winter hit the Valley, but when asked what the best

time of the year to fly is, my pilot Jeffery Hazlegrove said, “Anytime you get into the air is a good time.” Jeffrey, a master flight instructor for SoaringNV, teaches eight months out of the year, although the company is open year-round.

Glider ride offers different perspective on Valley

Page 32: 2012 Carson Valley Almanac

32 CARSON VALLEY ALMANAC 2012

In the Minden area, the mountains, deserts and clouds all combine to create perfect gliding conditions. According to Jef-frey, there are only three places that compare to Minden; New Zealand, South America and Africa. “Minden’s been on the map as a soaring destination since the 1920s. It’s world famous. If you’re racing cars you want to go to the best track. If you’re a glider pilot, you want to go to the area with the best conditions,” Jeffrey said. “People might not be able to do this kind of flying in Washington or Oregon or Germany, so they come here.” On our way out to the glider I asked if I’d be able to take notes while in the air. Jeffrey said I wouldn’t need to because, “this is not something you’ll soon forget.” Sitting on the tarmac waiting to take off I was pretty nervous, even though I knew I was in good hands. Jeffrey, 55, took his first solo glider flight at age 14. He has logged 11,700 glider flights in his career. “It grows on you more and more and more. By the time you do several flights it’s in your blood. It’s a passion,” he said. “It’s still quite a thrill taking a person up for their first flight. And seeing my students soloing brings a smile to my heart.” After we lifted off I thought, “Oh this isn’t so bad,” but then we hit a little down draft and my stomach dropped. Being

towed by the plane, it was hard to tell that we were ascending, or even moving at all. We reached 9,800 feet and my body was still a little tense with apprehension about what was going to happen next when Jeffrey said, “you see that yellow knob right there on your left, pull it. That will release us from the tow plane.” I pulled it, and we were off on our own heading for Genoa Peak and Lake Tahoe. I was beginning to relax by this time and enjoying the views of the snow-dusted Valley below. Our air speed was about 60 knots, but it felt like we were standing still. When we reached Genoa Peak and turned around, it was amazing to have a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. All the circular fields, which on the ground seem square, and a large section of the Carson River, combined with a close-up look at the mountains, really made for a spectacular experience. Off to the north I caught a glimpse of Washoe Lake. Soaring was totally different from flying in a commercial plane because I could see so much more and really felt the plane moving with the air around it.

I was beginning to understand why thousands of people visit SoaringNV every year to experience for the first time or the hundredth time what I was. “Somewhere in the back of their minds they’ve always wanted to do this. We hear ‘bucket list’ a lot lately,” Jeffrey said. “It’s the love, the drive, the desire. It’s a part of you. I feel like something is missing if I haven’t flown in a while.” He also told me about a 92-year-old Carson Valley man that goes up regularly with him, and SoaringNV had their first wedding performed in a glider over the summer. We were beginning to descend when Jeffrey gave me the rundown on how the stick works. Move it forward to make the nose go down, and up to make it go up, right to go right and left to go left. He then asked, “Are you ready?” My entire brain was screaming no, but I took control and went for it. My first reaction was to just keep it steady and not move the plane at all, but Jeffrey coaxed me to move the stick around using small movements, and I got the hang of it. I piloted for a few minutes doing my best to keep the wings even and the nose pointed in the right direction. It’s wasn’t as easy as it looks on television. It’s constant little adjustments. I’m glad I had the opportunity to do it, but I was really glad when he took back the controls.

I couldn’t imagine soloing in a glider, but Jeffrey explained that having a pilot’s license provides a sense of freedom. Depending on the person, getting a license can take three days to six months. “If you’ve ever thought you wanted to do it, go fly. Don’t let somebody tell you that you can’t,” he said. “Gliding gives you that freedom. You are in control, it’s not somebody else telling you. It is using Mother Nature, and about as green as you can possibly be.” He then asked me if I was ready for some tricks. That I was totally ready for. By this time I was feeling really relaxed and, since my breakfast was still intact, I figured why not. He first did a wing over where the glider tips completely sideways and floats to the side. It reminded me of a feather floating back and forth. It was as if we were weightless just hanging out in the open sky. Jeffrey then asked if I wanted to do a loop. Of course I did. As soon as he pointed the nose upward I could feel the G’s working against me. He told me to look around, and I tried, but it was a little difficult to move my head. We were then upside down and finishing our loop. All I could say was “Wow!” Way better than any roller coaster I have ever been on. The ride was then near the end, and we came in for our landing. Jeffrey used spoilers on the wings to slowly bring us down. I thought touching down would be a lot bumpier than it was, since the aircraft only weighs 850 pounds. It was so easy, and not scary at all. We landed quite gently and came to a stop right where we left off from. I didn’t want to get out. I felt like I was in a dream, and completely speechless. Then Jeffrey pointed the camera at me that was mounted on the wing to document our flight, and asked what I thought. All I could do was smile and giggle while stuttering out a few nonsensical words. My first glider ride will most likely not be my last. Jeffrey was right, it definitely wasn’t something I’ll soon forget. To schedule a ride, or for more information on learning to fly, visit www.soaringnv.com, or call 782-9595. ■

TakingFlight

STORY BY KURT HILDEBRAND I PHOTOS BY GORDON BOETTGER, SHANNON LITZ

Most people look at a 14-hour flight as an ordeal. But Minden resident Gordon Boettger looks at spending that amount of time in an aircraft cockpit that’s not quite as long as he is as an

opportunity for adventure. Folding his 6-foot, 6-inch frame into the cockpit of his 1972 Kestrel sailplane, he knows that with each flight he is heading into harm’s way, and that coming home safely is the real task.

The scene from inside a Duo Discus glider from a flight along the Sierra Wave in February 2011.

Preparation key to breaking glider records

Page 38: 2012 Carson Valley Almanac

38 CARSON VALLEY ALMANAC 2012

“People ask me ‘how do you sit in a place for 14 hours?’” he said. “What’s amazing is that the only thing separating you and the elements is an eighth-inch piece of canopy and a thin shell of a cockpit. It’s pretty harsh up there.” Boettger has broken records for solo flying, and was honored during March in Washington D.C., along with friend Hugh Bennett, for a record flight in Bennett’s two-seater. When flying at altitudes as high as 27,000 feet, at a surface speed averaging 80 mph, being prepared is the key to survival. “I won’t fly without a parachute,” he said. “If a wing comes off the plane, you need to be able to survive. Bailing out is bad news. If you get clear of the aircraft and get the chute open, you’re probably going to break a leg or two when you land.” While his survival suit keeps him warm, and auxiliary oxygen in his bail-out bottle will give him three minutes to get where the air is breathable, the real challenge is being found once he lands.

“You never know how far you’ll be from rescue,” he said. “It’s a huge desert out there. It takes days for people to be found.” That’s why he carries not one or two emergency locator beacons, but three. “I play the scenario in my head,” he said. “You’ve got to get clear of the aircraft and get the chute open. You can land 30 miles downwind, and still on the way down, there’s a signal.” Boettger has never had to use his emergency oxygen or his parachute. But even the act of flying the aircraft is a challenge that requires preparation. “You always have to think of the worst-case scenario. I have an emergency landing transmitter and three back-up devices,” he said. He doesn’t give up breathing, eating, drinking or even urinating for 14 hours while he’s packed into the cockpit of the Kestrel. With temperatures of -40 degrees at upper altitudes, just staying warm is a critical issue. There’s no heat in the Kestrel, but fortunately, it has a clear plastic nose that allows the sun to warm his feet and legs. “It’s cold, but with my feet in the canopy, it lets solar energy warm me up,” he said. “When there’s cloud cover, sometimes my legs get so cold I lose the ability to move them.” There isn’t enough oxygen at high altitude for a person to breathe, so Boettger carries 15 hours of oxygen with him in two large tanks under pressure. He also carries back-up regulators in case one fails. Staying hydrated is critical to maintaining his focus, so he brings up to 64 ounces of water, and after he’s consumed that water, a catheter gives him the means to get rid of it. A couple of sandwiches and he has all the ingredients for a record-breaking flight. Having all the ingredients doesn’t do any good unless Boettger can reach them.

“When it’s all laid out the night before it’s got to be just perfect,” he said. “Everything has to be in reach.” He said each flight is a three-day event. “The first day you spend ramping up for it physically, you have to be ready. There’s a lot of stress,” he said. Boettger uses a checklist to put everything where he can get it. “Little things can add up,” he said. “The cockpit is claustrophobic. It takes an hour to fit everything in. It’s all Velcroed in place. Don’t expect much sleep the night before. You have to be ready to go at 4 a.m.” Dealing with all the safety issues in advance is how Boettger allows himself to focus on flying. “I don’t want all the safety issues to overwhelm me,” he said. “None of this is worth losing your life.” He describes the conditions as pretty cramped during the flight, but the payoff comes with the ride. “The scenery is just incredible,” he said. ■

SeniorsHelping

STORY BY CARYN HALLER I PHOTOS BY JIM GRANT

If the Young at Heart Senior Citizens Club had a motto it would be, “Seniors helping seniors.” And they are always in need of new members. The club was founded in 1975 to operate and

maintain the Douglas County Senior Center. Since then it has transitioned into the fundraising arm of the center leaving day-to-day operations up to the county.

“I would encourage people to join the board so we can have new people to help with our events and get new ideas. It’s giving back to the community. It’s a senior helping a senior,” President Andrea Rajeski said. “We need volunteers to drive seniors, serve meals, help out at bingo, set up raffles. We’re always looking for help.” Membership costs $3 a year, and is open to anyone age 55 and older. Each month the Young At Heart board meets with the senior center management to discuss what the center’s needs are. In the past, they have paid for new furniture in the dining room, a walk-in freezer, an ice machine, a refrigerator for the dining room and built the gift shop. “It’s rewarding that I can be there to give back and help a senior who’s in need,” Rajeski said. “We have a ton of seniors in this Valley.” In 2011 the group donated more than $5,500 to various senior center causes including 90 and older birthday meals, Mother’s Day flowers, Father’s Day treats, an inventory control program for the kitchen and upgrades on the dining room speaker system. “Our goal is to support the senior center and that’s what we do,” board member Paul Lockwood said. “Ever since I’ve been there, whenever they’ve asked for something we’ve gotten it for them.”

Lockwood joined Young at Heart 14 years ago as a way to keep himself active. “I really believe God helps those who help themselves, so we seniors should get involved with helping other seniors,” he said. “The more involved you get, the more activities you do. It helps keep you young. Sitting at home doesn’t do anything mentally or physically for you, so getting involved is a good thing.” During the year, the organization holds many fundraising events such as monthly and lunchtime bingo, bake sales, a holiday craft fair and raffles. They are also involved in the adopt-a-senior program that provides funds for seniors to pay for dental care or eyeglasses, they donate to the Meals-on-Wheels program and organize the holiday gift bags for the homebound. Rajeski said the building of the new Douglas County Community & Senior Center in the fall of 2014 is a long-time coming. “It’s wonderful. It’s more practical right now and it’s needed,” she said. “The center now can only hold 126 people for meals and there are days that it’s packed. We certainly need the space.” She also said the club is brainstorming new ideas to increase future revenue. “We do pretty good. We have people serving all the time,” she said. “If something is needed at the center we talk about it and see what we can do to get it for them.” With 400 members, not all active, Young at Heart has a goal of reaching 500 members this year. Ann Smutnak has started taking Young at Heart membership dues for 2012. She is available at the senior center Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to enroll new members or renew returning memberships. “It’s a fun organization where people get together and give back to the community,” Rajeski said. For more information about Young at Heart, call 783-6455 ■
