“I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after grad-uation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercolle-giate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have beencompleted in Belk Arena and atSmith Field at RichardsonStadium.

ATHLETICS

Carol Quillen, who waspreviously the vice presidentfor international and interdisci-plinary initiatives at RiceUniversity, became the 18thpresident of Davidson Collegeon August 1, 2011.

Quillen has had a long anddistinguished career at Rice. She joined the faculty as an assistant pro-fessor of history in 1990, and she earned promotion to associate pro-fessor in 1996. From 2004 to 2008, she served as the first director ofRice's Boniuk Center for the Study and Advancement of ReligiousTolerance, leading development of the center's new mission and shap-ing an agenda that helped distinguish the center from other organiza-tions.

From 2006 to 2010, Quillen served as Rice's vice provost for aca-demic affairs, focusing particularly on developing initiatives that crossacademic schools, faculty diversity and faculty development, andresource development. During this time, she worked with faculty todevelop and secure funding for a new Center for Asian Studies and anew Institute for Urban Research. She co-chaired the president's diver-sity task force, and instituted mentoring programs for junior faculty.

As vice president for international and interdisciplinary initiatives,Quillen was responsible for developing and implementing Rice's over-all global strategy, which includes research partnerships, recruitingstrategies, curricular revision and international opportunities for stu-dents. She also facilitates implementation of university-wide initia-tives, including the Institute for Urban Research, Rice 360 (a globalhealth effort), and collaborations with Baylor and other institutionswithin the Texas Medical Center.

James W. Crownover, chair of Rice University's Board of Trustees, said, "It's an honor for Rice that one of ours has been chosen to lead aplace as respected as Davidson. She will work hard, and she will suc-ceed there."

Quillen grew up in New Castle, Del., a small town where she says"it was second nature to support the community and look out forother people." A Presbyterian, she attended Quaker schools from pre-kindergarten through high school. She earned a B.A. degree inAmerican history from the University of Chicago, graduating Phi BetaKappa with special and general honors, then received a Ph.D. degreein European histo-ry from Princeton.A humanist whoseacademic interestsinclude early mod-ern European his-tory, Europeanintellectual historyand gender stud-ies, Quillen haswritten two bookson Petrarch, aswell as a numberof scholarly arti-cles, reviews andpapers. She hasreceived a numberof teaching awardsduring her tenure at Rice.

Quillen's daughter, Caitlin, will be a first-year student at theUniversity of North Carolina next fall. Quillen's husband, KenKennedy-a computer pioneer who founded the computer science pro-gram at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift tome, and to the Rice community, was in living the life he would havechosen," Quillen said. "That's something I think about in a very pro-found way every day."

At Davidson, Quillen succeeds Tom Ross '72, who announced inAugust 2010 that he would step down to become president of theUniversity of North Carolina system in January 2011.

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 footballplayers traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson Collegeagainst Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first fouropponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, andundefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup.Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, out-gaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R.“Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliveringa “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that cap-tured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved over-whelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake ofthe Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team,“No other team ever put together in these UnitedStates of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s teamcould ever get the verdict over the flock of wild menfrom North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and ithas been used ever since, replacing former, milder ref-erences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and“Preachers.”
