The remaining 40 at-large qualifi ers will be chosen after all qualifying tournaments have been completed and will be announced on March 7. The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in person to determine these at-large bids.

High ExpectationsAmerican is projected to fi nish fi fth at the 108th EIWA Championships behind defending team champion Cornell, Lehigh, Rutgers, and Penn. American fi nished a program-best fourth at last year’s tournament, building the momentum en route to a fi fth-place team fi nish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Owning the PodiumAU returns two defending EIWA Champions for this year’s event -- No. 1 heavyweight Ryan Flores and No. 13 Matt Mariacher at 141 lbs. American University WrestlingAmerican University WrestlingChasing PerfectionFlores has been the No. 1 nationally-ranked heavyweight for the last 14 weeks. The returning national runner-up, All-American, and NWCA Academic All-American has posted a perfect 13-0 record this season with 10 falls. The senior from Clovis, Calif., has captured two EIWA titles in his career, which came last season as well as in 2009 when he attended Columbia. Flores is preseeded as the No. 1 heavyweight wrestler at this year’s tournament.

Flores and Rey to Meet Again?Flores and Lehigh’s Zach Rey, the current No. 2-ranked heavyweight and defending national champion, squared off four times last season, including on the biggest stage in college wrestling at the NCAA Championships. Rey won the fi rst two matchups, a 5-2 decision at Midlands and a 5-3 decision in a dual meet at Lehigh. Flores got the better end of it in the EIWA Championship bout, a 4-2 overtime decision to win the title, although Rey earned a tight 2-1 decision in the national championship match in Philadelphia in front of a nationwide audience on ESPN.

National RecognitionOn the heels of the program-record fi fth place fi nish at the 2011 NCAA Championships, the Eagles have been ranked in the top-12 all season long in InterMat’s tournament-strength rankings. AU has climbed to as high as No. 7 in the polls.

NCAA OutlookLast week, the NCAA released the fi nal coaches’ panel rankings and Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) for the 2011-12 season, two of the criteria for selecting at-large bids for the upcoming NCAA Championships. Flores was tabbed as the No. 1 heavyweight in the coaches’ panel rankings, while Sanjaa was No. 2 in the RPI and No. 3 in the coaches’ poll. Other Eagles to fi nd spots in the rankings included Mariacher (No. 14 in RPI, No. 14 in coaches’ panel), Mitchell (No. 10 in RPI, No. 18 in coaches’ panel), Williams (No. 28 in RPI, No. 32 in coaches’ panel), and Tao (No. 32 in coaches’ panel).

Twice as NiceFlores and Sanjaa were both selected to compete in the 2011 NWCA All-Star Classic this past November, marking the fi rst time in program history that multiple wrestlers have participated in the prestigious event. For the second straight year, Flores picked up a victory at the event, defeating then No. 6 Spencer Myers of Maryland, 11-2. Sanjaa, meanwhile, dropped a tight 8-5 decision to No. 3 Jason Welch of Northwestern.

New Face of American WrestlingHead Coach Teague Moore is in his fi rst season at the helm of the AU wrestling, taking over for last year’s NWCA National Coach of the Year Mark Cody. Moore, formerly the head coach at Clarion, was named the PSAC Coach of the Year last season. He has experience with the EIWA as he served as an assistant coach at Harvard in 2005-06 in a season, where the Crimson crowned two EIWA Champions and registered four total fi nalists. Moore graduated from Oklahoma State in 1999, and was crowned the 1998 National Champion and earned All-America status three times in his wrestling career.

American University Director of Athletics and Recreation Keith Gill announced the hiring of Teague Moore as the university’s new head wrestling coach on May 13, 2011.

Moore was the head coach at Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania for fi ve seasons. He led the Golden Eagles to a fourth-place fi nish at the 2011 Eastern Wrestling League Championships and the program’s fi rst Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship since 1994. He was named the 2011 PSAC Coach of the Year.

“We are very excited to welcome Teague Moore to American University as the new head coach of our wrestling program,”

Gill stated. “Teague has the skills, experience and drive to lead our student-athletes to continued success on the mat and in the classroom. His values are in alignment with our institution’s principles of commitment to academic and athletic achievements.”

Moore sent eight student-athletes to the NCAA Division I Championships in fi ve years at Clarion and this season was one win shy of crowning the program’s fi rst All-

American since 2005. Sophomore James Fleming won the 157 lbs. title at the EWL Championships and was named the Outstanding Wrestler, marking Clarion’s fi rst EWL Champion since 2005 and fi rst “OW” since 1980. Moore’s squad also boasted this year’s PSAC “OW” in 197 lbs. sophomore Alex Thomas and three PSAC Champions.

Moore inherits a team coming off a program record fi fth-place fi nish at the NCAA Championships. American return two All-American’s in national runner-up Ryan Flores and fourth-place fi nisher Ganbayar Sanjaa, two EIWA Champions in Flores and Matt Mariacher and nine of 10 starters from a

team which won a program record 14 dual meets in 2010-11. Moore replaces Mark Cody, who after nine seasons at American, was named the head coach at Oklahoma.

“I am grateful to the American University Athletics Department for their support and confi dence with this decision,” commented Moore. “AU’s wrestling program has proven to be a strong national contender with a very successful record in academics. Both of those elements have been the key to my approach and focus. I’m eager to continue building upon the recent successes of the American program.”

Moore was a four-year starter at Oklahoma State under Head Coach John Smith, winning the 1998 118 lbs. NCAA Championship with a pin of Michigan State’s Dave Morgan in the fi nals. A three-time All-American, he also placed third in 1999, fourth in 1997 and qualifi ed for Nationals as a freshman. Moore was a two-time BIG XII Champion and runner-up as a senior, and currently ranks 18th in Cowboy history with a career record of 118-25.

Moore continued his wrestling career at the international level following his graduation from Oklahoma State, placing third at the 2000 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials and winning the 2000 University World Freestyle Championship and 2002 U.S. Open National Championship. He was a three-time member of the National Team, earning a silver medal at the 2003 World Cup and placing second at the 2002 World

Team Trials. He also took third place at the 2003 World Team Trials, 2003 U.S. Open National Championships and 2004 U.S. Open National Championships.

He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping the Sooners to a third-place fi nish at the 2003 NCAA Championships, after beginning his career as an assistant at Pittsburgh.

Moore was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008. Wrestling for North Allegheny High School he was a three-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association placewinner and 1995 State Champion. He was also a three-time Pennsylvania State Freestyle Champion,

Volunteer Assistant Coach Steve Fittery joins the AU wrestling coaching staff in 2011-12 for his fi rst year.

Fittery fi nished his career in 2011 with a 67-5 overall record, including 54 bonus point wins and a

32-1 dual meet record. He fi nished third in the 2011 NCAA Championships to earn All-America status for a second straight year.

He was named American University Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and also selected as an NWCA Academic All-American for the second straight year. He captured the 157 lbs. He also won the Keystone Classic two years in a row and had beaten seven nationally-ranked opponents in 2010-11 with three falls and one major decision.

His 33 wins last season places him second for most single-season wins by an AU wrestler. Fittery also set a record with

Pete Friedl starts his fi rst season as an assistant coach for the American University wrestling team.

Friedl comes to American after one season as an assistant coach at Appalachian State.

Friedl helped guide two Mountaineer wrestlers to the NCAA Championships last season as Appalachian State registered a 56th-place fi nish as a team. In the classroom, the Mountaineers placed 13th in the country with a 3.09 team GPA last year.

Friedl was a standout collegiate wrestler at Illinois where he was a four-time NCAA qualifi er (2003-06) and three-time All-American (2004-06), placing as high as third at 184 lbs. in his senior season. He captured the Big Ten conference championship in 2005, leading the Ilini to the team title that season. Friedl was also a 2006 Midlands Champion, propelling Illinois to its third straight championship at that event. He graduated as the third-winningest wrestler in Ilini

history with 125 career victories.

“Pete brings a number of great attributes to our program,” Head Coach Teague Moore said. “His Big Ten success and national accolades combined with his desire to succeed as a coach are going to bring this program big results. Pete is a tremendous addition to our program.”

Friedl graduated from Illinois in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health. Following his graduation, he remained at Illinois for four years where he served as an assistant with the strength and conditioning program.
