Tonight, you are part of a monumental evening here at the Center for the Performing Arts. Together with the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative, we will unveil the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Designed to honor America’s musical legends, the evening is packed with musical tributes, an induction ceremony, an exquisite dinner and an after party filled with music and dancing.

The musical contributions of Barry Manilow, Cole Porter and Alan and Marilyn Bergman will take front and center. These artists – and those honored in the years ahead — represent the lyricists, composers and performers responsible for creating America’s soundtrack. It is a delight to have Barry Manilow and the Bergmans accepting their Hall of Fame awards in person on the Palladium stage. It is equally delightful to have members of the Porter family accepting on behalf of Cole Porter.

Tonight we are also welcoming an extraordinary young vocalist. Just last evening we concluded the third annual Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy & Competition. We are showcasing this year’s winner tonight with a special performance.

ANDREA MCARDLEAndrea McArdle first captured the hearts of theatergoers everywhere in 1977 when she originated the title role in the mega-musical Annie, based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” Since then she has starred in numerous Broadway musicals and appeared in theatres in New York, nationally and internationally.

She has performed in concert halls from Carnegie Hall to Hong Kong Philharmonic and in showrooms in both Las Vegas and Atlantic City. She has honed her craft by working with some of the great legends of the entertainment industry including Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, Liberace, Frank Sinatra, Steve Martin and Martin Short, to name a few, and was privileged to have appeared on television with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin and Dinah Shore.

LARI WHITE Lari’s music has earned three Grammys (The Apostle Soundtrack, Amazing Grace and A Country Tribute), and RIAA Gold status (Wishes/RCA Records). Her most recent studio albums include the R&B flavored Green Eyed Soul, hailed by the London Times as “the best soul album this year,” and My First Affair, music from her 2007 live show at the Oak Room in New York City.

As the first female producer of a male superstar, Lari recently made music history by producing Toby Keith’s platinum album White Trash with Money. Her songwriting credits include Tammy Wynette, Toby Keith, Lonestar, and most recently Danny Gokey, Pat Green and Sarah Buxton. Lari turned heads around the world with her role opposite Tom Hanks in the blockbuster movie Cast Away (as the “Angel at the Crossroads” in the final scene). She has also starred in films for Lifetime TV and CMT.

CLAY AIKEN After winning over millions of viewers on “American Idol” with his phenomenal voice and down-home charm, Aiken parlayed his success into full-fledged stardom. He has sold more than six million copies worldwide of his four albums: the double-platinum Measure of A Man (featuring the hits “Invisible” and “This is the Night”), 2004’s platinum holiday CD Merry Christmas With Love, 2006’s gold-certified A Thousand Different Ways, and 2008’s On My Way Here — all of which debuted in the Top 5 on the Billboard chart. In addition, Aiken has launched nine live tours, made the New York Times best-seller list by co-authoring the inspirational memoir “Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music In Your Life,” executive produced and starred in his first TV special, A Clay Aiken Christmas, and won several American Music and Billboard Music Awards — all while donating a significant amount of his time to such charities as his own foundation, National Inclusion Project and acting as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. In January 2008, Aiken made his Broadway debut in the role of Sir Robin in the Tony Award-winning musical Monty Python’s Spamalot.

MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Michael Feinstein, the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy-nominated entertainer dubbed “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” is considered one of the premier interpreters of American Popular Song. More than a mere performer, he is nationally recognized for his commitment to the American Popular Song, both celebrating its art and preserving its legacy for the next generation. In addition to serving as Artistic Director, Mr. Feinstein performs frequently at the Center for the Performing Arts and assists with programming.

Honors have been established to acknowledge those that have made significant contributions to the Great American Songbook. New members will be inducted to the Hall of Fame in an annual ceremony and Gala performance. It is exciting to bring together people who have experienced this music in different ways. The Hall of Fame will elevate the Great American Songbook, much like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame have done for their respective musical genres. The Great American Songbook Hall of Fame will induct new members annually. The Palladium serves as the official home of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative and the Hall of Fame. The Honorees will be recognized in the

south lobby on the gallery level of the Palladium. Plans exist for the construction of the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame Museum and Archive on the campus of the Center for the Performing Arts.

AWARD CATEGORIES INCLUDE:

Legend: Awarded posthumously to an artist who made a significant contribution to the Golden Age of American popular music, typically defined as the period from the early years of the 20th century through the 1960s. Inductee: Cole Porter, 2012.

Songbook: Awarded to living songwriters, both lyricists and composers, who have made a significant impact on American pop culture by creating the most beloved songs from the American popular songbook. Inductees: Alan and Marilyn Bergman, 2012.

New Standard: Awarded to the artist, songwriter and/or performer, who continues to create the soundtrack of our lives by writing and/or performing music that will stand the test of time and become the pop standards of tomorrow. Inductee: Barry Manilow, 2012.

THE COMMEMORATIVE AWARD

Tonight, the Hall of Fame Honorees will receive a unique glass sculpture that was created by GRT Glass Design. “The award is designed to reflect the innermost soul, from where out of nothing art is created. The art is the music. Each award is a one of a kind piece, just like every unique song ever written.” (Gregory Thompson, glass artist).

The Awards are generously underwritten by Irwin Helford, former Chairman of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative. When asked about his clear passion and deep connection to American standards, Mr. Helford explained:

“Melody and meaningful lyrics are, of course, the basis of a great standard. But it’s more than that. The words and music of the Great American Songbook reflect so much of American culture and the history of this great country. Great American songs have expressed the sorrow and happiness of America at the time written; the songs told of the personal, hard times of the depression, lifted our spirits during two world wars, expressed true love and feelings as we fell in love and raised our own families. Among many, two songs that are most meaningful to me are ‘God Bless America,’ written by Irving Berlin and introduced by singer Kate Smith. It’s simple, truthful and expresses our pride in America; the other song most meaningful to my wife, Betty and me today is ‘How Do You Keep The Music Playing,’ written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, our honorees for the Hall of Fame this year. It tells of love in our later years, and how it truly lasts a lifetime.”

Composer/lyricist Cole Porter’s decades-long string of Broadway successes began with the 1928 hit, “Paris,” and the introduction of

“Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love).” He followed with numerous musicals and films including Fifty Million Frenchmen, The New Yorkers, The Gay Divorce, Anything Goes, Kiss Me, Kate, Born to Dance, Rosalie and High Society. Porter’s productions introduced songs that were musically complex with witty, urbane lyrics that audiences loved. Songs such as “You Do Something to Me,” “Love for Sale,”

“Night and Day,” “Anything Goes,” “In the Still of the Night,” “Begin the Beguine,” “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” and “I Get a Kick Out of You” remain popular standards today and have been recorded by well-known artists from around the globe including Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, U2, Artie Shaw, Elvis Presley, Django Reinhardt, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Michael Buble, Jamie Cullum, Cesare Siepi, Sophie Milman, Joan Jett, Alanis Morrissette, and Michael Feinstein.

As successful songwriters, Alan and Marilyn Bergman have contributed to the Great American Songbook for more than five decades. Their professional collaboration has resulted in sixteen Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, three Emmy Awards, and one Ace Award. In 1983, Alan and Marilyn became the first songwriters to be nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Song of the five nominated songs. They are members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and recipients of the National Academy of Songwriters Lifetime Achievement Award and the Songwriters Hall of Fame Johnny Mercer Award. Their creative efforts “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”

“The Way We Were,” “Moonlight,” “It Might Be You,” and theme songs for “Maude,” “Good Times,” and “Alice” have become part of the fabric of American culture. Numerous artists have performed the Bergman’s music including Barbra Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Jose Feliciano, Frank Sinatra, Maureen McGovern, James Ingram, Gladys Knight, Sting, and Beyoncé.

BARRY MANILOWGreat American Songbook Hall of Fame, New Standard InducteeAlthough widely recognized as a singer-songwriter, Barry Manilow is also an accomplished producer and arranger. Manilow dominated the charts in the 1970’s with 10 number 1 singles and five simultaneous best-selling albums while also producing Grammy nominated albums for Bette Midler, Nancy Wilson and Dionne Warwick. Hit songs “Mandy,”

“Even Now,” “Looks Like We Made It,” “Weekend in New England,” and

“Tryin’ to Get the Feeling” defined the period. Billboard magazine ranks Manilow as the “top Adult contemporary chart artist of all time.” His incomparable musical career also included writing and singing commercial jingles for State Farm, Band-Aid, Stridex, McDonald’s, Pepsi and others. Manilow is an inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a recipient of numerous awards, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He continues to write, produce, and perform and is the founder of Manilow Music Project, an organization devoted to providing musical instruments and materials to school music programs. His latest album, Live in London was released in April 2012.

ABOUT THE FEINSTEIN INITIATIVEThe mission of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is to bring the music of the Great American Songbook to our young people today in order to preserve it for future generations. We work to fulfill this mission through a variety of initiatives.

SONGBOOK ARCHIVE

The Great American Songbook Archive exists to preserve the original compositions, recordings, memorabilia and other important artifacts of the Songbook so that current and future generations may experience them.

Currently, our collection contains sheet music, orchestrations, recordings (LP, 45, 78, reel, 16” transcription, cassette, and CD), film (8mm and DVD), and the correspondence and personal papers of some of the music’s creators.

The Archive is the only facility of its kind solely dedicated to preserving the Great American Songbook.

SONGBOOK GALLERY

Through the utilization of current technology we turn our diminutive gallery into a multimedia educational center for the Songbook. A touchscreen monitor allows visitors to see and hear the music as it was performed on stage and screen while digitized images turn the four

walls of the gallery into a life-sized textbook. Exhibit cases showcase pieces from our collections.

Our current exhibit, G.I. Jive: the Music and Entertainers of WWII, highlights the performers who entertained the troops through USO camp shows, as well as the music that unified the nation.

HIGH SCHOOL VOCAL ACADEMY & COMPETITION

The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative hosts the only high school vocal academy and competition in the U.S. dedicated solely to the music from Broadway, Hollywood musicals and the Tin Pan Alley era of the early to mid-twentieth century. The Great American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition has proven to be one of the Initiative’s most exciting education programs.

Students from across the country participate in a competitive audition process for the chance to attend regional music academies and competitions. Winners from these regional academies travel to Indianapolis for a four-day comprehensive

“boot-camp” on interpreting and performing the music of the Great American Songbook.

The first place winner wins $3,000 and a trip to New York City to sing with Michael Feinstein. In addtion to performing at tonight’s Encore Celebration, the winner will also serve as the Young Ambassador for the Great American Songbook, and will have opportunities throughout the year to represent the Initiative. First runner up will receive $2,000 and second runner up will receive $1,500.

ABOUT THE CENTERThe Center for the Performing Arts, with its diverse range of arts programming and educational outreach, has quickly become the Center for community engagement. Home to seven resident companies, not only is the arts campus a haven for local theater, dance and music organizations to perform, it also provides three of the finest stages in the world playing host to the globe’s most gifted performers.

In each of the three venues, the Center provides a subscription series featuring vocalists, orchestras, recitals and special performances. Dance companies perform one evening with jazz presentations staging concerts the following day, all tied together with educational outreach to area schools and community-based organizations.

Equally important to the talents performing on stage is the Center’s architecture. There is no other complex built in North America where so much attention has been paid to acoustics, creating a legacy that will be passed along to our children, grandchildren and for generations to come.
