We hope that your summer has been relaxing and that you are ready to hit the ground running this fall! In the spirit of progress, we would like to begin this newsletter with a quote from Albert Einstein – “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Semesters will come and go, new members will be initiated and may not come back for years, but our Tribe will always remain. The question is, “How much will we progress?” Recent changes in the Tribe have returned us to a mindset from our roots and have met the standards of a rapidly growing and advancing University. The University of Miami has risen into the top tier of universities, now ranked 38 th in the nation by US News and World Report. We are in a period of incredible innovation and sweeping technological advances. For our Tribe to continue thriving, we must not only embrace, but also seek to improve upon, the changes that previous officers and Councils of Elders have executed. We welcome the advice and support from any and all Tribe members, as we continue on this “pathway to greatness” that was laid down so many years ago. In our last business meeting of the spring semester, several matters were discussed that have created the groundwork for this new academic year. We intend to be more visible on campus. It is our mission as Iron Arrow to uphold the traditions of our Alma Mater and to be its living history. We will work year-round to fulfill this mission, and we will continually ask ourselves if we are doing enough to meet the needs of current students. It is important that we, as a Tribe, are here for students to provide encouragement and advice on how to get involved. To give incoming students a view of how remarkable our Tribe is – we placed an ad in “The Miami Hurricane’s First Impression” issue entitled “Iron Arrow Welcomes U”. In addition, our Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 tap class photos can be found in the 2011-2012 edition of the “Ibis” Yearbook. Working with student publications will provide us with a good start to a great year of engaging with the UM community. Last, but certainly not least, we realize that it can be difficult for members who are not living in Miami to stay connected with the Tribe. With this in mind, we have been working with the Council of Elders to create an online network, open only to the Tribe, through which members can contact each other. However, for this system to work, we need an overwhelming response from current members in their use of the networking system. We hope that through this system, we can all remain active in the Tribe and foster our love for our Alma Mater from anywhere in the world. We look forward to seeing many of you at this year’s Tribal activities and UM community events. We welcome your input and suggestions, and we thank you for your support and dedication to the Tribe. A Message from the Chief Greetings Tribe Members!

On behalf of the officers and myself, welcome to the start of another academic year. The University of Miami has risen into the top tier of universities, now ranked 38th in the nation by US News and World Report.

Iron Arrow Honor SocietySpring 2012 Family Day &

Baseball Honor Court Despite our plans to once again mix together sun, sand, and good food for a perfect Iron Arrow Family Day at Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne, the Great Father of All Things and Mother Nature would not have it. Poor weather forced us to reschedule the Family Day Picnic and eventually combine it with the Spring 2012 Baseball Honor Court.

Due to the timing, the Tribe opted for something a little different. Our (very wise) Advisor pointed out that the Newman Alumni Center’s outdoor terrace overlooking Mark Light Field and in full view of the larger-than-life bronze statue of Sebastian The Ibis would be a perfect spot to host our Iron Arrow Family, and have a bit of a tailgate at the same time.

The Newman Alumni Center was more than happy to oblige and help us out, and provided yummy food and beverages in plentiful amounts for everyone. The result was a terrific turnout despite the nagging sprinkles. We hope that this may become yet another tradition, and that the tribe will gather to celebrate another year of memories made and happy times at the U in the Spring semesters

to come. Following the Fami l y Day P icn ic , members made their way to the field to welcome and cheer on o u r b a s e b a l l t e a m m e m b e r s a s t h e y prepared to do battle w i t h t h e V i r g i n i a Cavaliers in an ACC Conference game.

who attended and took photos to upload them to the IA set, or

Nine and as new as a slate of executive officers that made history upon their election this spring as the first all-female executive board!

The History and Tradition Series was created as evenings meant to bring fascinating and enlightening information to the UM community by having tribe members share their stories and experiences. The first gathering, held in Spring 2011, was the brainchild of the 2010-2011 Chief, Son of Chief and Medicine Man, who organized the event with the help of Marc O’Connor, a dedicated tribe member who also has served on the IA Council of Elders. The topic: ‘How Are Traditions Formed?’ brought together panelists including G. Holmes Braddock, Randal "Thrill" Hill, John Routh and Brandon Mitchell who shared their experiences with an appreciative audience at the UM Sports Hall of Fame. The venue itself was part of the successful evening, rich in ‘Cane lore and memories of sports glory. Fall 2011’s ‘How do "U" Serve? Discover our Links in Community Involvement & Public Service’ featuring Dr. William R. Butler, Jaret L. Davis, Norm Parsons, and Caitlin Giles, was immensely successful. In Spring 2012 the Officers presented ‘The Law and The U-The Colorful and Intertwined Histories & Traditions of the UM School of Law and the School’s Highest Honor’ with panelists Marni Lennon, Elizabeth M. Rodriguez and Dave McDonald.

This fall, the popular and well attended series continues on Wednesday, October 24 with a Tribal Powwow entitled “Tales of the U.” Expanding on suggestions from an undergraduate student’s feedback at the Fall 2011 event, Tribe members from various eras and groups within the U will be on hand to share experiences, answer questions and uphold the proud legacy of the Tribe’s involvement in every phase of University life.

We hope you will come join the Tribal gathering to laugh, remember and help support the Tribe as we share memories and make some new ones together.

Donor Honor Roll The Tribe is deeply grateful to the following members for their faithful generosity in the past year:

Iron Arrow Honor SocietyFall 2012 Luncheon Speaker: Katie Meier

Katie Meier enters her eighth season in 2012-2013 as the head coach of the Hurricanes' women's basketball program. A well known and respected figure in women's basketball, Meier has worked tirelessly to put her mark on Miami's program and to build a winning tradition. All of her hard work was rewarded after the 2010-11 season as she was named both the ACC and the Associated Press National Coach of the Year - sharing the award with Connecticut's Geno Auriemma and Stanford's Tara VanDerveer. A four-year letterwinner (1986-88, 1990) at Duke University, Meier was a 1988 GTE All-American and the 1986 ACC Rookie of the Year. She still ranks tied for first in Duke’s all-time single-game records for assists with 12 and scored the fifth-most points in a game in Duke history with 36 points. Meier lists fifth among all-time Duke career scoring leaders with 1,761 points (16.2 ppg.) and 10th for assists with 409. During her four years on the court Meier helped Duke compile a 72-43 mark and advance to the 1986 WNIT and 1987 NCAA Tournament second round. No stranger to international basketball, after leaving Duke Meier spent three years playing professional

basketball in Belgium from 1990-93 and aided her team to a trio of Belgium Cup titles. Meier got her head coaching start at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where in four seasons (2001-02 through 2004-05) she turned around a program that had not posted a winning record since the 1993-94 season and had only one postseason appearance since Charlotte entered NCAA Division I.Meier led the Hurricanes into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 and its win over Gardner-Webb in the first round was the first tournament win for the 'Canes since 1993. Miami entered the 2010-11 season with high internal expectations, but were picked eighth in the Preseason ACC Poll and were coming off a season in which it was the No. 12 seed in the ACC Tournament. However, the Hurricanes exceeded all of the outside expectations and at one point, won 17 straight games. They were a perfect 20-0 inside the BankUnited Center and finished 12-2 in ACC play - earning their first regular season conference title since joining the league in 2004. As a reward, Meier was named the ACC Coach of the Year and later would be selected as the WBCA/RUSSELL ATHLETIC Region 2 Coach of the Year, as voted on by her peers. Meier continued that success into the 2011-12 season, a year in which the Canes accomplished many firsts for the program. Miami defeated Maryland - the eventual ACC Tournament champ - twice during the regular season, the first when they were ranked No. 5 in the nation. It was the first time in program history that the Hurricanes had defeated a Top 5 team. Later in the year, UM ascended to its highest ranking ever, also at No. 5. The Hurricanes proved to be formidable on the court inside the BankUnited Center as the 2011-12 season saw Miami go undefeated at home for the second consecutive season. Their 16-0 mark on the year, pushed the Canes record win streak to 40 consecutive games. Only Stanford ended the season with a longer active streak. For her dedication to the University of Miami and the athletic department, Meier was signed to a two-year contract extension, securing the Wheaton, Ill. native through the 2017-18 season. An 11-year coaching veteran (2001-02 to present), Katie Meier was named on April 19, 2012, as head coach for the 2012 USA Basketball Women's U18 National Team.

Fall 2012 Family Day: Canoeing Everglades National Park You are invited to experience Pa-Hay-Okee, and more, on a special Family Day canoe trip on November 18, 2012 when we will explore the River of Grass in Everglades National Park. Don’t miss this chance to spend a quiet day reflecting on and appreciating our tribal heritage. Close to the city and yet so far away, the Everglades provides stunning views of nature in its majesty. We are grateful to Terry Helmers for making this happen. Terry is a volunteer at Biscayne National Park and an avid canoeist. His skills are highly valued by the park service staff, as well as many others, as he continuously maps out and then publishes canoe trails through the Everglades. For more information, please email us at [email protected] and check the online calendar at the Tribe’s website at www.ironarrow.com for more information as the details of the event are confirmed, including when we reach capacity, meeting times and locations, and other pertinent information you will need to enjoy the day in the River of Grass.
