IMPACT is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization, founded by a group of young professionals to foster civic engagement, to increase knowledge in the political and legislative processes, and to enhance economic empowerment opportunities for other young professionals ages 21 to 40. impact’s three core principles:
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT | POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT | ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT IMPACT is governed in all its activities by three core principles: civic engagement, political involvement, and economic empowerment. Focusing on ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT provides unique opportunities for IMPACT leaders to accumulate and preserve wealth, while imparting the skills and experiences needed to enable others to do the same. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT activities identify and enable IMPACT leaders to utilize resources to ensure the preservation and advancement of our communities. Through POLITICAL INVOLVEMENT, IMPACT facilitates and supports the engagement of our peers in politics, policy development, and advocacy. By connecting young leaders to one another and to resources that can assist them in creating positive change in the communities from which they come, we collectively strengthen the IMPACT that our generation makes on the world today, tomorrow, and in the future. IMPACT’s target demographic consists of corporate executives, legislative and policy professionals, nonprofit and community leaders, and elected officials. IMPACT partners with businesses, organizations, and leaders to host candidate forums, round table discussions, lecture series, workshops, and strategic networking events to support and empower emerging leaders and young professionals of color.

nations best advocates: 40 Lawyers under 40 IMPACT, in partnership with the National Bar Association (NBA), is hosting the Inaugural “Nation’s Best Advocates: 40 Lawyers Under 40” during the 2010 National Bar Association Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Designed to recognize talented individuals (age 40 and under) within the African American legal community who have achieved prominence and distinction this event will also serve to strengthen the connection between young lawyers and the National Bar Association. This year’s cadre of exceptional young lawyers represents a cross-section of legal professionals including: solo practitioners, government lawyers, judges, academicians, corporate counsels, young elected officials, and others lawyers who are using their law degree and legal training in innovative ways.

The Emerging Leaders Series (ELS) provides a unique experience for youth, college students, and young professionals seeking to enhance their careers and public engagement. Hosted during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference—the premier gathering of African American politicians and policy makers—the ELS provides emerging leaders with the information and resources needed to effectively engage in the policy making process.
Since 2008, IMPACT has partnered with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation to enhance the Annual Legislative Conference events for young professionals. Specifically, IPMACT has produced two signature ELS events: The Annual Town Hall and the Roundtable with Young Elected Officials, Policy Professionals and the Obama Administration.
Through this Emerging Leaders Series IMPACT facili-tates the participation of young professionals in contributing to a national emerging leader’s agenda that will serve as the blueprint for change.

PREVIEW provides guests with an intimate and elegant venue to interact with Members of the Congress and other notable, national leaders. Since its inception in 2006, PREVIEW has been a tremendous success.
In 2009, PREVIEW was attended by hundreds of guests, principally community leaders and young professionals from all over the world. Guests have included candidates seeking public office, senior executives in the private sector, young professionals from the non-profit community, members of the Young Elected Officials Network and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Emerging Leaders program.
Each month IMPACT highlights young leaders excelling professionally while simultaneously transforming communities. The “IMPACT Leader of the Year” is honored at Preview during the Annual Legislative Conference (ALC). At Preview new relationships are forged, friendships are strengthened and young professionals have opportunities to make meaningful connections that can assist them in effecting and sustaining positive change.

interns of color ReceptionIMPACT celebrates young professionals working in the politics and public affairs around the Nation’s Capitol—this is especially true for our interns who work for free in exchange for experience and opportunity. IMPACT’s quarterly reception serves as an opportunity for interns to learn about professional resources available to them while also providing them with an opportunity to network and enhance relationships.
Young elected officials networking ReceptionThis year, IMPACT hosted the first Young Elected Officials Network reception. The event, hosted during the Network’s 5th Annual convening, provided the 200 members with an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments while networking other young professionals working in policy and politics.

IMPACT was founded and is directed by young professionals of color who have been successful in high-ranking roles in the public and private sector. The vision of IMPACT is currently carried out by Directors: Joe Briggs, Strategic Operations; Angela Rye, Strategic Partnerships; and David Johns, Development. The team also includes Kendra Briggs, General Counsel and Michiel Perry, Deputy Director of Student Engagement.

Joe d. briggs, esq.Founder and Director of Strategic Operations
Born and raised in Dundee, Florida, Joe Briggs, a scholarship athlete, earned three varsity letters while also serving as a committed student leader at Texas Christian University. After working in corporate America, Mr. Briggs transitioned into education serving as the Special Assistant to the President of Florida A&M University while simultaneously pursuing a master’s degree at the same institution as a State University System Fellow. Mr. Briggs obtained a juris doctorate at Florida State University College of Law in 2006. During his time in law school, Mr. Briggs was employed as a law clerk for Bryant Miller Olive. He was also selected as a United States Senate Legal Extern. Mr. Briggs also completed two years of national leadership on the National Black Law Students Association Executive Board while also serving as a Lieutenant Governor in the ABA Law Student Division, Vice President of the Student Bar Association and as a member of his law school trial team.
After the completion of his externship as a US Senate Legal Fellow, Mr. Briggs was hired by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to manage their Financial Programs Department. Currently, he serves as the Public Policy Counsel of the NFLPA and first individual to lead the NFLPA Government Relations Department. Mr. Briggs is also a professor at Georgetown University and is a sought after public speaker on subjects ranging from politics to sports and everything in between. david JohnsDirector of Development
David J. Johns graduated with honors from Columbia University in 2004 with a triple major in English, Creative Writing and African American Studies. His research as a Mellon Fellow served as a catalyst to identify, disrupt, and supplant deleterious perceptions of black males both within academia and society. Following graduation, Johns obtained a Masters degree in Sociology and Education Policy at Teachers College, Columbia University graduating summa cum laude, while simultaneously teaching elementary school in New York. His Masters thesis, “Shadowboxing: Black Male Identity and Independent Schools,” examined how Black male adolescents at elite, self-selecting independent schools understand and respond to perceptions and expectations of Black males.
Johns currently serves as a Senior Education Policy Advisor to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions under the leadership of Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). His policy portfolio includes issues affecting workforce development; low-income and minority students; immigrants and English language learners; neglected youth and foster children; early childhood education; Historically Black institutions, Hispanic Serving institutions, and Tribal Colleges. Johns was named one of Ebony Magazines “30 Top Leaders Under 30″ in 2007 and his essays “Re-Imagining Black Masculinity” and “If Not For Me…Then For My Children” have been published in the National Urban League’s 2007 and 2009 State of Black America Reports, respectively.
An avid volunteer, Johns is a member of the Magic Johnson Taylor Michael’s Scholarship Program committee and is also on the board of Plan for Success, a nonprofit commit-ted to diversity in the workplace. He is currently working on several projects to improve literacy among adolescent minority males, strengthen resources available to minority students at elite private schools, and a book project designed to help students navigate the college admissions and financial aid process.

angela Rye, esq.Founder and Director of Strategic Partnerships
Angela Rye currently serves as Senior Advisor and Counsel to the House Committee on Homeland Security under the leadership of Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman. She is charged with developing the general political strategy for the Committee with a focus on assisting disenfranchised, small minority owned businesses.
Ms. Rye began her career in legislative advocacy at the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO)—the umbrella association for the Nation’s 120 historically and predominately black colleges and universities. At NAFEO, she served as the Coordinator of Advocacy and Legislative Affairs. Prior to her work at NAFEO, Ms. Rye had the privilege of serving as a Legal Extern in Congresswoman Maxine Waters’ Los Angeles office. In this capacity, Ms. Rye learned about legislative procedure and organization, as well as developed favor-able public policy for constituents, and assisted in the mobilization and organization of community members to make a difference locally.
Angela Rye graduated from Seattle University School of Law and has served as the Western Region Director for the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) where she managed and supervised the Western Region Executive Board. Formerly the Legislative Affairs Chair of the Greater Washington Area Chapter (GWAC) for the Women’s Law Division of the NBA, Ms. Rye is committed to shoring up efforts to increase knowledge of the political processes for her colleagues and peers. Ms. Rye’s reputation for advocacy led to her appointment to the American Bar Association’s Government Affairs Committee, where she serves as the YLD Liaison. She is also Chair of the Legislative Committee for the National Bar Association Young Lawyers Division.

Kendra briggs, esq.General Counsel
Kendra practices in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Litigation Division in the D.C. office of Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP (SHB), where she assists clients in the defense of products liabil-ity lawsuits. Prior to joining SHB, Kendra worked as a civil litigator in Florida at Parks & Crump, LLC and the Florida Department of Transportation. Kendra graduated cum laude from the University of Miami School of Law in 2002.
In the summer of 2000, Kendra served as a law clerk for Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince. During law school, Kendra was the recipient of the Dean’s Honor Scholarship and served as vice pres-ident of the Black Law Students Association. She also served as vice president of the Society of Bar & Gavel, the highest honor afforded to students at the University of Miami School of Law. Kendra received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Civil Procedure, awarded to the student who receives the highest grade in the class, and also received honors in Litigation Skills I. Kendra was also a member of the Moot Court Board and the supervising dean’s fellow in the Writing Center.
She is a member of the Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the National Bar Association, the Florida State University Black Alumni Association (National Board of Directors) the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, and the Alpha Epsilon Lambda Graduate Honor Society.
