A New Year —A New Journey

Many years ago I would visit my grandparents inBrown County. As I went from room to room Iwould cross a raised threshold. There weretimes that I would trip over the threshold as myfoot hit it or other times I crossed into the nextroom with ease. Today most homes do not

have a distinct threshold that separate rooms. Yet, you can think of

the threshold as a point of entry, a new beginning, or a rite of passage. You can either pass through the doorway tripping or passover the threshold into the next room with ease. Going from room toroom may suggest life transitions. You may think of going fromchildhood to becoming an adult to retirement as entering new rooms

or life transitions. Or you can think of going from one year to thenext.

As I look at the room we just left I can state with assurance we haveaccomplished much. Staff and volunteers have made a difference inthe lives of so many senior citizens.

So—what do we expect upon entering our new room—2012? Anew year is a new beginning. We can hope, predict, vision anddream. We can…

Take our past successesEmbrace best practices

Assess our programs & services, andManage our financial resources

2012 will be a new beginning for me. It will be the first year withoutmy mother which means Chuck and I are the oldest generation inour family—the patriarchs so to speak. This New Year I will be

entering a new room on my journey of life.

May you have a great journey during 2012!

The abuse of prescription drugshas taken place quietly among asegment of the population whereyou would least expect it: theelderly. Drugs commonly abused

by senior citizens belong to agroup called the benzodiazepines. These drugs slow the activity of the brain and are used to treatanxiety and sleeplessness. Theycan easily veer off into the danger zone of abuse:Diazepam (Valium)Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride

(Librium)Alprazolam (Xanax)Triazolam (Halcion)Estazolam (ProSom)

The National Instituteon Drug Abuse recommends thatsenior citizens use those drugs for no longer than 4 months becauseof the risk of addiction. Signs of trouble for users include: Memoryloss or forgetfulness, excessivesleepiness and frequent falls or stumbling. If you or a family

member have any of thesesymptoms, experts recommendthat you talk with your doctor.Source: www.USATODAY.com

The winter season presents manychallenges for seniors, who are

statistically more prone to hypothermia,

driving accidents due to severe

conditions, home fires, and injuries

resulting from falls. While many families

look forward to the beauty of winter, concerns for a senior loved one’s well-

being can cause undue stress. The key to

enjoying a safe and healthy winter is

 being prepared.

Hypothermia-Avoid, or limit your time,

outdoors. If you must go outside, bundle

up with multiple layers of

loose-fitting clothing, a hat,

scarf and gloves. When

inside, set the thermostat to a

comfortable level (suggested

65-70 degrees) and consume warm meals

and drinks. If you believe you, or

someone else, may have hypothermia,

seek immediate medical attention.

Home fires-Keep areas around space

heaters clear of clothing, bedding, blankets, curtains, etc. Do not use

kerosene heaters, gas stoves, or charcoal

grills for home heating. Have your

fireplace and chimney inspected and

cleaned yearly, keep an operable fire

extinguisher readily available, and ensure

smoke alarms/carbon monoxide detectors

are properly functioning. Finally, avoid

smoking indoors or leaving

candles lit while out of sight.

Falls-Shovel your sidewalks

and walkways often or

arrange to have someone do it for you.

Wear proper, skid-resistant footwear and

avoid icy areas or snowy sidewalks if  possible. Recruit the assistance of a

friend or loved one to help you safely

navigate uncertain terrain if you must

venture out. If you use a cane or walker,

attachments and accessories, such as ice

 picks, are available.

Driving safety-Winterize your car,

checking antifreeze levels, tire tread and

 pressure, and the windshield wipers.

Before driving, stock your car with basic

emergency supplies, blankets, and food.Check weather reports and road maps

and use tire chains when possible.

Always take a cell phone with you

during any trips. While driving, stop

gently to avoid losing control, reduce

speed, keep headlights on, and proceedwith caution on bridges or overpasses.
