Board of Directors Report

Minnesota Waters Closes Its DoorsThe Lone Lake Associations’ Board of Directors

is sad to report that Minnesota Waters has closed itsdoors in mid-May. MW acted as parent organization forall of the lake associations in the State of Minnesota.MW provided training and grant programs for lakeassociations and conducted a vigorous legislative programto protect the rivers and lakes of Minnesota. TheLLPOA had been a long time member of MW andreceived its website hosting from it. Shortly after theclosing it was announced that Minnesota Waters wouldbecome part of Conservation Minnesota and they wouldnow host the MW members’ websites.

This prompted the LLPOA to act quickly topurchase our own domain name which will bewww.lonelake.org in the future in the event that we mayneed to transfer our website to another provider. However, for the moment our website is up and runningand we will keep members informed of any websitechanges. The Annual Gathering Set For July 28th

You will notice that the Annual Meeting and PotLuck is now the Annual Gathering that takes place onSaturday, July 28th. The Board adopted the change fromthe 2nd weekend in June to the fourth weekend in July fortwo important reasons. First because June is the primesummer month for inviting company to the lake and theBoard realized how precious that time is and the difficultyfor many members to attend. Secondly the Board alsofelt that our late summer Variety Show was not being wellattended and that if we combined the two events into oneand make it a month later in the summer that we mightattract more members and their families to attend.

So we now have the Annual Gathering that willbe held on Saturday, July 28th from 11:00 to 1:30 at thePreiner Storage Building at 30353 Oak Avenue. Asalways we encourage you to bring a hot dish, salad ordessert to share (with copies of your recipe!) and foldingchairs. The Association will provide tables, plates andtableware, coffee, pop, popcorn and lots of door prizes. There will be games for the kids like the bean-bag-tossand Minnow Races with prizes!

Stan Tekiela will be our speaker and hispresentation will focus on the Loons of Minnesota and hewill absolutely keep you captivated with his knowledge ofLoons and their behaviors. Stan is an award winningnaturalist, wildlife photographer and writer and is theoriginator of the popular Birds of Minnesota Field Guide,

Wildflowers of Minnesota and Trees of Minnesota.Over the past two decades Stan has authored more than100 field guides, nature appreciation books and wildlife

audio CDs for nearly everystate in the nation, presenting many speciesof birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, trees, wildflowers andcacti.

Holding aBachelor of Sciencedegree in NaturalHistory from theUniversity of Minnesota

and as an activeprofessional naturalist for

more than 20 years, Stan studies and photographs wildlifethroughout the United States and has received variousnational and regional awards for his books andphotographs.

Stan is also a well-known columnist and radiopersonality, his syndicated column appears in over 20newspapers and his wildlife programs are broadcast on anumber of Midwest radio stations. He is a member of theNorth American Nature Photography Association andCanon Professional Services along with many otherprofessional organizations. The Association will beholding a drawing to give away his famous Birds ofMinnesota Field Guide with Bird Songs CD.

The Lone Lake Singers will be on hand to sing acouple songs, we’ll have a Loon Photo Contest (Startnow!) and a Loon Calling Contest. The meeting will endwith a brief election of the LLPOA Officers. We hopeyou will make it a point to reserve July 28th on yourcalendar and come and celebrate Lone Lake and ourLoons!

This Is The Year To Test The Water!

Every five years the LLPOA conducts testing andanalysis of the water in Lone Lake. Jerry Baker andDavid Scott are doing the testing and taking samplestwice a month from June through August and one samplein September. The biweekly samples taken will beanalyzed for Total Phosphorus (TP); Chlorophyll a, andPheophytin. Secchi Disk transparency reading will alsobe taken on the same schedule. Secchi Disk readings aretaken on a biweekly basis yearly. Water clarity in LoneLake in the month of May was 28feet! This year’s wateranalysis of the indicators will be used by the LLPOABoard to update the Lone Lake Management Plan in2013. The cost of the water sampling analysis will beshared between the LLPOA and the Aitkin county Soiland Water District. Dave Scott said, “Testing the waterevery five years will give us reliable data to determine ifwe are maintaining our high quality of water in LoneLake and if gradation has occurred we can take steps tocorrect it.”

The LLPOA and members appreciate the effortsof Jerry Baker and David Scott for their willingness toconduct the tests and collect the samples under stringenttesting procedures that will help us monitor the quality ofthe water in Lone Lake.

Loon Stories from Lone Lake(Continued from page1)

Loon Lagoon is located in the West Bay of LoneLake and there is where you will see the Association’sLoon Nest. Pat Humphreys also lives on that lagoon andis our resident observer of the Loon nest.

Hi Lone Lakers. Walt, Bob and I braved the thin ice(those big dudes forced me to go first) went to the otherside of the Loon Lagoon and set the nest in place inanticipation of the ice melt in March. The loons showedup early and we saw the birds looking over the nest fouror five times. We could not distinguish if it was thesame bird or different ones (they all wear the samesuit). This year there was a lot of squawking (maybebecause of the other pair on the East end, or we are soclose to the beaver house) anyway, for a while we did notthink anything would happen - on the nest for a fewminutes then off the nest for a day or so. Finally, Isurmised they were finalizing the 2nd egg. Earlier in theyear I read a report written by a noted Loon Expert whostated Loons can lay multiple eggs over a couple weekperiod (usually two) and they will not begin to incubateuntil the birds body-heat starts it. The report blows ahole in the theory that Loons mate for life. In fact, when a stronger male comes along and drives the otheroff, she gets the homestead and he moves in.

Anyway, they settled into the nest about May14th and incubation is approximately 29 days so weshould see the little one/ones after June 12th.

On Saturday, June 9th we received this reportfrom Jane Humphreys. “ Birth Announcement – Surprise!Good Morning! The loons were really carrying on thismorning so Pat walked down to the shore. One loon hasa baby on its back, the other swam around for a fewminutes then she/he is back on the nest so perhapsanother baby will be born/hatched today. We will let youknow.” At press time Naomi Wagenknecht called andexclaimed “We have two baby Loons and they are doingfine!”

We look forward to more sightings and moreLoon stories. Mark Williams has a place on Stephan’sPoint and he had some decoys out in the water this springand sureenough theLoon cameover toinvestigateand scout-out theintruders!

52 Boat Inspections Made Over theMemorial Weekend

Memorial Day weekend LLPOA BoatInspection was an interesting experience. Between theblistering heat and sudden thunderstorms our AIS BoatInspectors inspected 52 boats. Our volunteer inspectorsput in 51 hours at the Public Access inspecting andeducating the public. We had three empty slots but wereable to cover most of the weekend boat access traffic.

During the twelve shifts that our Boat Inspectorswere on duty we had three boats that had last been in thewater at Mille Lacs prior to coming to Lone Lake.Thank heavens that one had been in Mille Lacs 8 dayspreviously and for the other two it had been 14 days. If aboat is cleaned and dry then most zebra mussels will onlysurvive up to 5 days although some experts suggest 12days. Two of the three were from Lone Lake and tookprecautions to clean their boats inside and out.

The greatest threat to Lone Lake is ZebraMussles. Our proximity to Lake Mille Lacs puts our lakein danger every time it is windy and rough on Mille Lacsand fishermen leave to find quiet waters on small adjacentlakes. A professional fisherman visiting Lone Lake toldone of our inspectors that the best way to inspect a boatthat has come from Mille Lacs is to run your hand downthe lower portion of the bow and if it feels gritty it is mostlikely Zebra Mussels and will most likely infect the lake.He went on to say that the best way to deal with it is tosuggest that they not launch prior to going into thecarwash in Aitkin where the water temperature is 106degrees and to power wash their boat inside and out andall of their anchors and tow lines. He even suggested thatthey wash their car because of backing their vehicle intothe water. His solution for the live well is to put a half acup of breach in a gallon of water and rinse it out on landaway for the lake.

The pro-fisherman went on to say that if theboater does not cooperate then notify him that he hasbeen warned that he is most likely transporting ZebraMussels and tell him that you are notifying the authorities

and take out yourcell phone

and dial911!

Wewant tothank theMemorialDayInspectorsfor theirimportantservice to

inspect but more importantly to educate boater andsupply them with the current information on AquaticInvasive Species. Specifically we want to thank Julie andJerry Nelson, Jon Tremmel, Rick Napurski, SeanHawkinson, Linda Szymanski, Jeanne Thompson, PeggyBragelman, Naomi and Jerry Wagenknech (Pictured hereand first time inspectors with Jeanne and Peggy!), DavidWilke and Karen and Steve Frazier.

Let’s now turn our attention to the upcoming 4th

of July and Labor DayWeekends. We have fiveopen shifts for the heavy 4th ofJuly Week and three openshifts for the Labor DayWeekend. We know thatlake time is precious but so isserving and trying to protectthe lake from invasive speciesand careless boaters anduninformed personalwatercraft operators. ContactSteve Frazier [email protected] with your

name(s) and desired Date and Shift you would like toserve. In turn Steve will send you an instruction letterthat describes the inspection process and a Pdf file thatdescribes how inspections are conducted on Lone Lake.If you are a DNR Certified Boat Inspector and havealready signed–up to do a shift the LLPOA AIS Fundwill pay you $15/hour to take on an additional shift(s).

How about some good news?! Bev Napurski hasmade-up new Boat Inspector Badges that make an officialimpression to boaters using the Public Access and will beready for the 4th of July Inspectors.

Are the Beavers Destroying Your Shoreland? The LLPOA’s Policy on beavers is that we will

pay for trapping the beavers if they are inhibiting the flowof water out of Lone Lake. However if the beavers arecausing damage on your shoreland it is your owndetermination what action you may want to take. This isa touchy subject of nature versus shoreland preservationand the Association leaves that decision up to you. If youneed a trapper he is Wayne Davies 218-927-6817
