POLLED HEREFORD- In the recent years the Hereford industry has seen a positive turnaround in the interest due to the greater focus on consumer and customer needs. Knoll Crest Farm’s program, designed around the needs of the beef industry through commercial bull customers, has worked well for us with the Polled Hereford breed for over 50 years. We believe there is a great need for Hereford cattle in crossbreeding programs. The black-baldie cow and black baldiefeedercalfhaveandcontinuetobethechoiceofmanyfeedercalfproducersandfeedlotoperators.Theexcellentdisposition of the Hereford breed can be strong asset for a family farm or part time operation. This breed has aggressively embraced new genetic improvement technology that will allow Hereford cattle to be competitive as a component of progressive crossbreeding programs.

American Angus Association$Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollarsper head, to assist commercial beef producers by addingsimplicity to genetic selection decisions. A $Value has mean-ing only when used in comparison to the $Value of anotheranimal. For example, just as with EPDs, variation in $Valuesbetween animals indicates average expected differences inthe relative value of progeny if random mating is assumedand the calves are exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W): an index expressed in dollars perhead, is the expected average difference in future progenyperformance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenueand cost adjustments associated with differences in birthweight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cowsize.

Feedlot Value ($F): an index expressed in dollars per head, isthe expected average difference in future progeny perform-ance for postweaning performance compared to progeny ofother sires.

Grid Value ($G): an index expressed in dollars per head, isthe expected average difference in future progeny perform-ance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of othersires.

Beef Value ($B): an index expressed in dollars per head, isthe expected average difference in future progeny perform-ance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progenyof other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $Fand $G.

$Value Indexes

$Values should be used to complement the criteria that pro-ducers already use when selecting bulls.

The $Values are not designed to be driven by a single trait,as an index is multi-trait by design. These selection tools arethe result of the application of industry-relevant market val-ues to Angus genetics for preweaning, feedlot, and carcassmerit.

The $W, $F, $G and $B values on individual animals and theSire Evaluation Report may be viewed at www.angus.org.

Weaningweights(for205dayadjustedweights)weretakeninMay,approximately30 days prior to weaning. Bulls were weaned on pasture and hay. The “test period” for Average Daily Gain(ADG) was from early June to early October. For that period, bulls continued to graze in 15-30 acre pastures, had access to grass hay and free-choice bull developer composed primarily of commodity ingredients, barley and an intake-limiting ingredient from Purina.Theyearlingweightsarelighterthaninyearspast,butweareconfidentthebullsarehealthier,sounder,andbetterpreparedforthebreedingseasonwithoutneedforextrasupplementation. The bulls were divided into several contemporary groups for “ratioing” purposes at weaning and yearling, as well as, test gain. They were grouped by breed, and pre-wean-ing location and management. ET bulls were put into separate contemporary groups. Our goal is to minimize confusion, while practicing sound genetic evaluation principals. Please give Paul a call if you have questions.

AngusTrue herdsire prospect. Y263 has jumped through every hoop. He is massive, thick, big testicled, big footed, and may be the quietest bull in the pasture. His Pathfinder dam records 6@103 BWR, 6@119 WWR, 6@118 YWR, 6@119 IMF, 6@107 RE. Her 5 natural sons have each been the top yearling weight individual in their calf crop. Her 2010 son, KCF Bennett Homestead, topped our April 2011 sale and is now being used here and at Larry & Helen Hedricks’. This cow line has worked extremely well for us, tracing to the dam of KCF Bennett Index, whose daughters have worked very well. We still AI to the Quality M22 bull, whose unique combination of calving ease and ribeye is difficult to match. His 4th generation Pathfinder dam was one of our all-time best females. We look forward to using Y263 in our AI program.

Note concerning Angus ET Bulls: The ET Angus bulls in the offering generally have lower individual performance than the natural bulls. They were raised at a different location and ,consequently, their actual performance was impaired. With these bulls in particular, it is important to rely more heavily on their EPDs for

accurate evaluation of their breeding potential, especially since this entire group has their EPDs enhanced by the Pfizer HD50K genomic profile. Please call Paul if you have questions concerning this.

" It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit."-HarryS.Truman

AngusThese flush brother present an opportunity to make improvement in so many traits, thus their index values are all over 40 for $W, and 80 for $B. Plus, they’ve all been genomically tested by HD50k for greater EPD accuracy. Very few sons of the original Conneally Con-sensus are available, and these are out of our time-tested Pathfinder 1842, who records: 7@108 WWR, 6@106 YWR, 57@104 IMF, 57@104 RE. Her greatest value may be her ability to improve con-venience traits like feet, udder quality, fertility, structural soundness and fleshing ability.

•Maternal brother to lot 75. Last year’s standout, X337 topped our December 2011 bull sale at $62,500 to Chuck Miller’s Rosecrest Farm in Lexington, KY. We anxiously await his first calves here and are very impressed with his three flush sisters that calved this fall.

Like his maternal brothers X337 and S100, this stud is so complete and fault-free. He’s red eyed, smooth polled, dark red, big testicled and thick. He represents multiple generations of highly reliable, high accuracy calving-ease sires without sacrificing in other traits. His dam continues to be a stellar producer, recording 7@94 BWR, 7@106 WWR, 7@104 YWR, 16@109 IMF. His dam is particularly unique in that she ranks in the top 5% of our herd for udder quality and is our #1 production female with 5@120 WWR and 5@118 YWR. She is a mater-nal sister to Spencer’s S380 sire and the dam of White Hawk’s S342. Smooth Polled.

American Hereford Association Profit IndexesProfit Indexes are not silver bullets! The indexes which have been formulated by the AHA are to be used to assist Hereford breeders in using the genetic evaluations to potentially improve profitability for commercial producers. These indexes have been designed using multiple traits. These indexes are formulated on general representations of beef production systems used in the U.S. and consider a group of economically relevant traits that characterize those systems. Relative economic values for this group of traits are paired up with the EPD to produce a $ index value. The difference in the $ value of the high index predicts the difference in the profit. Each of the indexes utilizes crossbreeding to capture the value of heterosis. The indexes also include cost of production for all phases of production (cow-calf, feedlot and harvest). The income is derived at the carcass endpoint based on the quality, weight, grade and yield. The economic values are based on past values with some forecast for what economists believe the future holds. The economic values assigned to each trait can be changed at anytime that it looks to be necessary.

Baldy Maternal IndexesThis is a maternally focused index that has a production system based off of 1000 Hereford x Angus females with a progeny harvest endpoint directed towards CHB. This index is more critical of CE that the Braham Influence Index and also has significant weight on fertility. There is positive weight on WW and a slightly negative weight on YW which promotes early growth and then a slow down on growth to keep mature size manageable. The weight for IMF is greater that the weight for REA. This is true because of the price difference between the choice-select spread and the fact that there is very little incentive to produce cattle better than a yield grade 3. The question comes up concerning the fact that our branded beef program (CHB) has been successful because of the acceptance of Select cattle. IN answer to this, we are using a crossbreeding production system that could sell cattle on several grids and that our CHB program is installing a choice product. This index is geared to service any commercial program that runs British cross cows.

CHB (Certified Hereford Beef) This is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls sire calves for the CHB market. There is some pressure put on CE and then positive weight on both WW and YW. Remember that all offspring in this index are harvested, so we want then to be born alive and then grow fast at all stages of life. Of course, we have a much heavier weight value on fat in this index, as we want the cattle to stay lean. There is also a significant weight on both REA and IMF with more emphasis again on IMF. This index would be used by producers who have a target of producing bulls for a terminal breeding program. This index could be used heavily in the Midwest where bulls are used in rotational breeding programs to produce cattle in a retained ownership program or simply sold to backgrounders. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that nothing is retained in the herd.

HHybrids. It started with single-cross corn; it has dominated broiler and swine production, the state conservation depart-ment releases hybrid game fish, and now the car companies are promoting hybrids. All for the same reason; there are advan-tages to hybrids.

The movement to hybrid seedstock in beef production is in its infancy and increased usage in commercial beef production is inevitable. Why…because hybrids simplify many of the challenges a commercial beef producer faces and increase profi tability. Hybrids also stabilize breed composition; in turn that provides more, not less, consistency in a calf crop. I remember sitting in Beef Production class and a number of Animal Breeding classes while the professor diagramed crossbreeding systems for beef production. I caught myself wondering how anyone could sleep though such a stimulating lecture. It’s all about heterosis, breed complementarity, maternal heterosis and potentially utilizing terminal breeds, what could be better? I’ve since fi gured out it was all about maximizing complexity, ignoring simplicity and real-world application…the smartest students may have been the ones napping. Let’s take a look at a basic two-breed rotation. The textbook model assumes that you’ll have bulls of each breed and separate your cows into two breeding groups based on their sire breed. In big herds, where it is feasible, it requires extra labor to sort cows and calves, making sure you don’t split a pair, and it doesn’t fi t with improved management practices like rotational grazing. The three-breed textbook model, to take full advantage of maternal heterosis, is just one step more complicated.

The Crossbreeding Reality The reality approach in most herds is to buy a bull of one breed use him two years and then replace him with one from the second breed. This is especially true

in small, single herd sire cowherds, but for simplicity even many big herds rotate breeds every other year. Keeping replacement females every cycle in this system means the resulting calf crop has a variety of percentages, from 50% and up, of the sire breed used in that cycle. How does that provide consistency? The temptation might be to consider straight breeding commercial cows. But the merits of crossbreeding are too great for a commercial cattleman to ignore. Crossbreeding provides heterosis in many traits but in particular the traits that are the most diffi cult to apply selection pressure for improvement. Cow longevity, lifetime productivity and calf survivability, are examples where heterosis can give a 25 percent or higher advantage.

The heterosis advantages in growth and milk are smaller, and in carcass traits we see little hybrid vigor. In these traits breed complementarity, combining breeds with offsetting strengths and weaknesses comes to play.

The Balancer® Advantage As a commercial producer, if I had straight-bred or high-percentage British cattle, I’d use Gelbvieh bulls until I had

some Gelbvieh infl uence in a majority of my cowherd. At that point, I’d switch to Balancers® to stabilize the level of Gelbvieh and British in my herd at a desirable level. Under this scenario, the skeptics argue that somehow the parent breeds will genetically segregate in the offspring, yielding more variability, but this just isn’t the case. Consistency in the calf crop comes from the progeny being very similar in breed composition. The data from the Gelbvieh Alliance and Meat Animal Research Center agree that combining continental and British infl uence at the right levels pay big dividends in feed effi ciency and targeting a desirable, and profi table, level of Yield and Quality grades.

In the pasture, Gelbvieh infl uence in your cowherd that will provide great fertility, milk and growth, while keeping mature cow size in check. There is a reason commercial beef producers appreciate the advantages of Balancer bulls. They take the headaches out of crossbreeding, provide heterosis, and let producers focus on the windows of acceptability for feedlot performance and end product merit. Balancers are the easy shortcut to profi tability.

Why Balancers®? Crossbreeding made easy.Wayne Vanderwert, Ph.D., AGA Executive Director

Bias or Tradition?By: James Bennett

A breed association or seedstock breeder with only one breed has every reason to be bias in support of their breed. I have been there, and done that. Until 1972, I was a second generation biased Polled Hereford breeder. After developing the Red House Bull Evaluation Center, which involved feeding out and performance testing bulls of seven different breeds and working with their respective breeders, I developed the slogan ”Different breeds for different needs.” Our objective at Knoll Crest Farm, to better serve our customers, has caused us to add additional breeds and cross-breeds to our seedstock program.Cross Breeding Advantages Reproduction, Today’s Greatest Advantage – It has been said, reproduction is ten times more important than the second most important trait in cattle production. Research data, but more important to me, Knoll Crest Farm data, would support the advantage you get in conception by crossbreeding. We found our 2012 spring breeding beginning May 10th, to be challenging due to the adverse weather. I contend with dry, 100+ degree weather, is challenging to breed cows or corn. It was evident in our corn with missing grains or ears that did not fill out. Two exceptions to this was some later planted corn that got rain, making high quality and high quantity silage, and our 19 Balancer (Gelbvieh/Angus) heifers that ultrasounded 100% pregnant. All but one bred in the first 21 days. 1 heifer was determined to be carrying a dead fetus. Structural Soundness – Structural soundness, or the lack thereof, can have a great influence in the longevity on an animal. If we increase mature size by 25-40% over time to a breed without a similar increase in the running gear, we might expect to create a problem. Research at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center at Clay Center, NE suggests our primary British breeds now equal or exceed the mature weight of our primary continental breeds. Over the 30+ years of research, the Gelbvieh breed is the only breed that has not increased mature weight. I observe a difference in the structure of our breeds. You can improve structural soundness by cross-breeding. Disposition – Culling is probably the best cure for an attitude problem. As I age, I appreciate Jim’s commitment to eliminate that problem and the risk that goes along with it. That’s not to say that we won’t have bulls get excited there first time in a sale ring or a momma cow that would prefer you not tag her newborn calf. There is a genetic difference in disposition in breeds of cattle. Our Hereford and Hereford cross cattle would be the winners in this category. Of course, if you can fix it by culling, we have been culling the Herefords since 1944. Calves Weaned – Hybrid vigor has a positive effect on a new born calf’s will to live. Under normal conditions the least time it takes to get up and nurse is an advantage, under adverse weather it can be the difference between life and death. My experience with sheep gives me a better appreciation for the will to live, be it at birth or during an illness. I have seen too many tears from our grandchildren unsuccessfully trying to love life back into that crippled, weak, or chilled orphan lamb. They couldn’t understand why the lamb wouldn’t help.

I have often said, “Tradition is the greatest handicap to production agriculture.”
