For the 2012 season, the NJCAA will release seven

Division II baseball rankings on a bi-weekly basis at

the beginning of the season and then weekly the

last three weeks of the season based on the

following schedule: March 14, March 28, April 11,

April 25, May 9, May 16 and May 23. The final poll

date is determined by the start of the DII World

Series.

Each NJCAA Region Director with Division II baseball

will report the top teams in their respective region

to NJCAA Headquarters each Monday, which is then

compiled into a weekly region report. This report is

then sent out to the NJCAA Division II voting panel,

which consists of the 10 District Directors. Each

District Director then compiles a Top 20 based on

this report. (Rank order submitted by each region is

honored.) In order to be eligible for ranking, a team

first must have their schedule/results and stats up

to date on the NJCAA website. They must also then

be submitted by their region director to the national

office for poll consideration.

NJCAA Headquarters will compile all votes and

release the rankings to the public on each poll date

online at www.njcaa.org.

David Freese - World Series MVP

Former-St. Louis CC Player David Freese

Wins World Series MVP

St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman David Freese was largely an unknown player entering the 2011 season. Little did the Cardinal fan base know that in October he would be raising the World Series MVP trophy. Following his heroics in the Fall Classic, Freese quickly became a household name that will be remembered in baseball lore for decades to come. Freese’s journey to the top of the baseball world began at St. Louis Communi-ty College - Meramec (Mo.). After suffering from a broken wrist during his freshman season, Freese had his coming-out party in 2004. With drastic improvements to his swing, Freese earned himself first-team spots on the All-Region, All-District and All-American teams. Following his commendable season at Meramec, Freese went on to finish his collegiate career at South Alabama where he was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. Once Freese advanced to professional baseball, his stock began to rise as a up-and-coming prospect. The Cardinals thought so much of his abilities that they traded star outfielder Jim Edmonds for him prior to the 2009 season. Unfortunately, Freese suffered injury after injury and didn’t meet his high expectations until the 2011 season. During the playoffs, Freese boasted a .397 batting average and tied playoff records with 21 RBI’s, 50 total bases and 25 hits. Freese showcased his flare for the dramatic in Game 6 of the World Series. With the Rangers one strike away from becoming champions, Freese hit a two-run triple to tie the game and force extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Freese forced Game 7 with a walk-off home run. The game has largely been acclaimed as one of the greatest in the history of the World Series. Freese went on to bat in two runs in Game 7, as the Cardinals claimed their 11th World Series title in club history.

Western Oklahoma State’s Veras and Des Moines Area’s Schmit Named 2011 ABCA and Easton Players of the Year

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), in conjunction with the NJCAA, selected Jhiomar Veras (Western Oklahoma State) as the 2011 ABCA Division II Player of the Year. Blake Schmit (Des Moines Area CC, Iowa) was chosen as the 2011 Easton Division II Defensive Player of the Year.

ABCA Division II Player of the Year Jhiomar Veras (OF - Western Oklahoma State College)

Jhiomar Veras, Western Oklahoma State’s sophomore outfielder, compiled an impres-sive season for the Pioneers. Veras led all players in the NJCAA Division II with a .503 batting average and finished third in runs batted in with 74. The DII Player of the Year also topped the list in total home runs with 23; four more than the second place play-er. Additionally, Jhiomar finished with 74-for-147 with 63 runs, 15 doubles, and two triples in only 44 games played! Veras proved he not only had a powerful bat, but quick legs as well, stealing 13 bases over the season in 15 attempts. In the NJCAA DII World Series, Veras contributed to the Pioneers’ National title, recording a hit, an RBI, and a run in the championship game against Jones County Junior College. Veras was drafted in the 15th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Florida Marlins on June 7.

Easton Division II Defensive Player of the Year Blake Schmit (SS - Des Moines Area Community College, Iowa)

Blake Schmit, Des Moines Area’s shortstop, put together a .976 fielding percentage in the 2011 season to go along with 55 putouts and 106 assists while committing just four errors. The freshman also contributed to 23 double plays on the year. At the plate, Schmit went 51-for-147, posting a .347 batting average over 51 games and scored 33 runs and 25 RBI’s. He managed 12 doubles, a triple, a homer, and seven stolen bases as well. A .393 on-base percentage made him incredibly valuable in all facets of the game for the Bears. Additionally, Blake earned 2011 NJCAA DII Rawlings Gold Glove® honors.

The Rawlings Gold Glove Award® is the benchmark of excellence and

performance on the diamond in Major League Baseball. However, in

2007 the award began to also symbolize the best of the best at the

collegiate and high school levels. For the fourth consecutive year,

college and high school players flashing serious leather were awarded

Rawlings Gold Glove Awards as Rawlings celebrates its 53rd year of

the Rawlings Gold Glove Award®. In partnership with the American

Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Rawlings presented the first-

ever Rawlings Gold Glove Awards in 2007 to players in NCAA Divisions

I, II, and III; NAIA; NJCAA Divisions I, II, and III; and High School.
