WhilstNorthernNSWFootballhascelebratedarichandvibranthistorydatingbackmorethan125years,2012hasbeenverymuchaboutpreparingforanevenmoreexcitingfuture.

Thestartoftheyearwasadisruptiveoneandthedevelopmentsthattookplaceattheendof2011andinearly2012weredealtwithpromptlyandeffectivelybyMemberZones,ExecutiveManagement,StandingCommitteesandstakeholderswithanunquestionablevoteofconfidencefortheincumbentCEODavidEland.

Iwouldliketoacknowledgethededication,commitmentandfocusdisplayedbyourExecutiveandstaffwhocontinuedtomeetorganisationalobjectivesandmemberexpectationsthroughoutthisdifficultperiod.

WithDavidandaproactivenewBoardofDirectorsinplacefromearly2012,NorthernNSWFootballhassetaboutgettingbackontrackwiththeimplementationofanexcitingnewpathforthegrowthanddevelopmentoffootballacrossNorthernNSW.

ToquoteourCEO,‘qualityplayersneedqualityfacilities’andtothisendwehavecommencedpreparationsforthedevelopmentofanelitefootballfacilityatSpeersPoint.

ThefacilitywillservenotonlyasafirstclasscentreforathletedevelopmentbutalsoarevenuestreamtoallowNorthernNSWFootballtocontinuetoprovidecosteffectiveopportunitiesforpeopleofallagesandskilllevelstoparticipateintheworldgameacrossNorthernNSW.

InSeptemberwesawanexciting,integratedtalentedplayerpathwayannounced,inconjunctionwiththeNewcastleJetsandFootballFederationAustralia,foryouthplayerstoaspiretoonedayrepresentNorthernNSWonthenationalstageatA-LeagueandW-Leaguelevel.

Whilstatgrassrootslevel,wehavejoinedwithavibrantcorporatepartnerinNewcastlePermanentBuildingSociety,togethercreatinganexcitingenvironmentforjuniorfootballthathasseen12%growthinentrylevelregistrationsin2012.

MayItaketheopportunitytothankthemanydedicatedandpassionatestakeholdersinourgreatgameacrossNorthernNSW,whetheravolunteer,aplayer,asponsor,matchofficial,aparentorclubofficialforyourownpersonalcontributiontowhathasbeenagreatyearoffootball.

Inparticular,ourMemberZonesandStandingCommitteesthathaveonceagainworkedconscientiouslytowardstheadoptionandimplementationofkeyinitiativeswithintheorganisation’sStrategicPlanandoperationalplanswithintheirrespectivegeographicalareasofoperation.

Asparticipantsinourgreatgame,youareALLwinners-withtheprizebeingtheenjoymentandsatisfactiongainedbythethousandsofplayers,youngandold,maleandfemalewhoparticipateinourgameacrossNorthernNSWeachyear.

ItiswithgreatpleasurethatIprovidetheChiefExecutiveOfficer’sReport,whichaimstoprovideabriefoverviewoftheorganisation’smajorachievementsin2012andprogresstowardstheachievementoftheobjectivesidentifiedwithinourStrategicPlan2010–2014.

Infootballterms,NNSWFgotofftoaveryslowstarttotheyear.Afterthreemonthsofupheaval,memberswerefinallygrantedtheiropportunitytoelectanewboardofdirectorsattheAnnualGeneralMeetingon10January,2012.

Thenewlyelectedboard,ledbyChairman,BillWalkerandDeputyChairmanMichaelGaertnerrespondedimmediatelybyinitiatingaraftofessentialgovernancepoliciesandreengagementinitiativeswhichaimedtoreassurestakeholdersthatNorthernNSWFootballwasonceagainfirmlyfocusedonthebestinterestsofitsmembersandthegrowth,developmentandpromotionofthesportthroughoutNorthernNSW.

Thenewboard’sapproachreinvigoratedtheexecutiveandstaffandthenewgovernancepoliciesfacilitatedmoreeffectivemanagement.TheMemberZoneStrategicRetreatandWomen’sFootballForumledtotheadoptionofanamendedstrategicplan,whichwillguidetheorganisationforthenexttwoyears.

ThetotalnumberofplayersthroughoutNorthernNSWremainedsteadyin2012comparedtothepreviousseason.DiscountedregistrationfeesandtheprovisionoffreeshinpadsandafootballthroughthegroundbreakingsponsorshipwiththeNewcastlePermanentBuildingSocietyledtoa12%increaseinEntryLevelparticipation.

TheappointmentofNNSWF’sinauguralFemaleParticipationOfficerresultedincoachingandmatchofficialcoursesjustforfemalesandthepilotingofagirlsonlyOptusSmallSidedFootballhubinNewcastle.

ThelaunchesofGirlsQuickKicksandSummer6’swereverysuccessful.Ananticipated6000playerswillcompeteinsanctionedoff-seasonactivitiesin2012generating$150,000,whichwillbeavailableforfurtherinvestmentinprogramsandservices.

TheestablishmentoftheEmergingJetsinpartnershipwiththeNewcastleJetsandFootballFederationAustraliawillensurethataspiringprofessionalfootballershaveaccesstothecoaching,supportservicesandcompetitionsrequiredtoachievetheirdreams.Thispartnershipaimstoreinvigoratetheregion’sproudhistoryofproducingSocceroosandMatildasthatinspirefuturegenerationsofparticipants.

Worldclassplayersneedaccesstoaworldclassfacility.NorthernNSWFootballhasidentifiedanidealsiteatSpeersPointPark,SpeersPointandcommittedupto$4mofMembers’Equitytowardstheproject.LakeMacquarieCityCouncilhasthrowntheirfullsupportbehindtheprojectthroughthesubmissionofa$7.3mfundingapplicationtotheHunterInfrastructureandInvestmentFund.TheNSWGovernment’sfinancialsupportwillprovidetheregion’slargestsportwiththefacilityitsodesperatelyneedstoopenupthegametoanewmarketanddevelopchampionsofthefuture.

ByanymeasureNNSWF’sPremierCompetitionsexceededallexpectationsthisseason.TheJetsYouth’sparticipationintheflagshipNBNStateLeaguewasaboonfortheLeagueandtheclubs.ThebumperattendancethroughouttheGrandFinalSerieswasreflectiveofthesupportandstandardofthePremierCompetitions.

FirstTouchFootballSuppliesgrewagainthisyear.Turnoverhasincreasedby42%inthepast3years,whichhasdramaticallydecreasedNNSWF’sheavyrelianceonplayerregistrationfees.

Footballeditorialinprintmediaalonethisseasoneclipsedatotalcumulativeaudienceof21million.Thenewbrandarchitecture,whichwasimplementedthroughouttheorganisationdeliveredconsistencyandcutthrough.Theintegratedwebsitenetworkandcompetitionmanagementsystempeakedat61,000uniqueusersinJuneandmorethan11millionpageviewsweregenerated.NNSWF’sFacebookpage’sreachextendedtoover3000Likes,whichhasresultedinthefootballcommunitybeingbetterinformedthaneverbefore.

KlosterHyundaijoinedtheteamastheOfficialSupplierofMotorVehiclesand#10TeamwearcommittedtoprovideappareltotheNewcastleJetsW-Leagueteam.ThesenewpartnershipsarereflectiveofNNSWF’sandthesport’sstatuswithinthecommunityandfreeupvaluableresourcesforfurtherinvestmentinthegrassroots.

ThesurpluswhichwillbereportedtomembersattheAGMisindicativeoftheeffectivegovernanceandmanagementoftheCompany.InresponseNorthernNSWFootball’sBoardhasdeterminedthattherewillbenoincreasestoplayerregistrationfeesorcompetitionfeesin2013.

OnbehalfofNorthernNSWFootball’sBoard,ExecutiveandStaff,IacknowledgetheselflessserviceofeveryvolunteerandIalsoextendsincereappreciationtothefootballwidowsandwidowerswhotoleratetheirpartnersgivingsomuchtimetoourgame.

Despiteadecreaseintotalregisteredplayersin2012,boththeentrylevelandnon-traditionalparticipationsectorsgrewsubstantiallythankstotargetedmarketingandadvertising,afreezeonregistrationfeesforentrylevelparticipants,theintroductionofSummer6’sandQuickKicks,theloweringoftheentrylevelagerestrictiontoincludefouryearoldsandtheprovisionofafreefootballandpairofshinpadstoeveryentrylevelparticipantaspartoftheNewcastlePermanentJuniorFootballsponsorship.

ThecontinuedimplementationoftheFFASchools5-a-sideGalaDaysandtheintroductionofNNSWF’sGirlsOnlyHighSchoolGalaDayeventsprovidedover3200studentstheopportunitytoparticipateinmodifiedfootballmatchesaswellasengagewithcurrentNewcastleJetsA-LeagueandW-LeagueplayersthankstoapositiveworkingrelationshipwiththeNewcastleJets.

NyssaSuchanowwasemployedinthefull-timeroleofFemaleParticipationOfficerandchargedwithimplementingprogramsandservicesaimedatincreasingfemaleparticipationatalllevelsoffootball.Nyssa’sappointmentsawtheimplementationofNNSWF’sfirstever‘GirlsFootballWeek’,aGirlsOnlyOptusSmall-SidedFootballcompetitionpilotedinNewcastle,GirlsOnlyHighSchool6-a-sideGalaDays,FemaleOnlyCoachandMatchOfficialeducationcoursesandthefirsteverWomen’sFootballForum,whichwillbecomeanannualevent.

Throughout2012NorthernNSWFootball,inpartnershipwithSpecialOlympicsAustralia,providedparticipationopportunitiesforover250athleteswithadisability.ThispartnershipwasformalisedbythesigningofaMemorandumofUnderstandingonAugust28whichwillseeSpecialOlympicsAustraliaandNNSWFworktogetherontheprovisionanddevelopmentoffootballforpeoplewithanintellectualdisabilityinNorthernNSW.

GaryFisher,ClubDevelopmentOfficerinitiatedtheNationalClubAccreditationScheme(NCAS)whichsawEastArmidaleFCawardedastheinauguralLevel1accreditedclubinNorthernNSW.14moreclubshavesinceachievedLevel1accreditationwiththisnumbersettoincreasethroughout2013.

NNSWF’sinauguralIndigenousFootballFestivalwasconductedinAugustproviding90indigenoushighschoolstudentswiththeopportunitytoparticipateina6-a-sidetournament.Thewinningteams,CoffsHarbour(FemaleDivision)andMoree(MaleDivision)representedNorthernNSWattheNationalIndigenousFootballFestivalheldinAliceSpringsinNovember.

Therewasapositiveincreasein2012inthenumberofcoacheswhogainedGrassrootsCertificationandaccreditedcoachinglicenses.

AnAssessorsandPresenterscoursewasconductedinJanuary,with25newCoachEducationPresentersbecomingaccreditedtodelivercoacheducationcourses.ThiswillgreatlyassisttoincreasethenumberandqualityofcoachesthroughoutNorthernNSWinthefuture.

834coachesattendedaGrassrootsCoachingCertificatecoursein2012,whichequatedtoanincreaseof30.75%on2011and406

coachesreceivedfullaccreditationatJunior,Youth,SeniororJuniorGoalKeepinglevel.Anadditional138femalecoachesgainedfullaccreditationatJuniororYouthlevelthroughFemaleOnlyCoachEducationcourses.Thisrelatestoatotalincreaseinaccreditedcoachesof15.8%inNorthernNSWcomparedto2011.

Theimplementationofanumberofnewinitiativesin2012hasprovidedadditionalopportunitiestoeliterefereesacrossNorthernNSWtoreachthehighestlevel.ThefirstStateCoachingPanelmeetingwasheldinNewcastleinMarchwiththeaimofensuringconsistencyinrefereeeducationacrossallzones.AgreementswithFFA,FootballFederationVictoriaandFootballQueenslandhavebeenreachedtoensureopportunitiesareavailabletoeliterefereestoofficiateandbeassessedatthehighestlevel,withthefirstexchangetakingplaceinJuneseeingStuartWolfetraveltoBrisbanetoofficiateBrisbaneStrikersFCvSunshineCoastFireFC.FFAalsoestablishedtheNationalTalentPoolformatchofficialsaimingtoachieveappointmentsinNationalCompetitions.NorthernNSWenjoyedthesecondhighestnumberofmatchofficialsacceptedwith7matchofficialsappointedtoA-LeagueandW-Leaguepanels.

TheFFANationalCurriculumcontinuestoserveastheblueprintforthedevelopmentofjuniorfootballinAustralia.Thisisalongtermstrategyandwearenowstartingtoseethebenefitsoftheintroductionofsmallsidedfootball,improvedcommunityandelitecoachingstructuresandtrainingmethodology.NorthernNSWisveryfortunatetohavethesupportofzoneadministratorsandtechnicaldirectorswhohaveimplementedtheprogramsandsupportedthecurriculumrolloutthroughouttheirrespectiveZones.

OurmajorrepresentativeactivityistheparticipationattheFFANationalChampionships.SeventeamscomprisingoffourmaleandthreefemaleteamswereverywellpreparedandweareluckytohaveagreatgroupofdedicatedcoachesandofficialswhoworkincrediblyhardtoprepareallplayersfortheChampionships.

IwouldalsoliketothanktheparentsandfamiliesofourseventeamswhoparticipatedatNationalsfortheirinvaluablesupportoftheirchildrenandtheprogram.

Threeplayers,ReecePapas,BrandonLundyandJaydenWalkerattendedanumberofJoeys’campsandoverseastours.Whilstnotmakingitintothefinalsquad,theplayersshouldbeproudoftheirinvolvementthroughouttheyear.Eight(8)playershavebeeninvitedtotrainonwiththeJetsYouthTeamandtheEmergingJetsUnder18Team.

In2012theNNSWISGirlsProgramchangedtoUnder18inaccordancewithNationaldirection.ThesquadcompetedintheMetropolitanU/15SYLandfourgirlsfromthesquad,TuliaPalozzi,KallyLewis,AlisonTraversoandHannahSouthwellarecurrentlypartoftheAustralianUnder17Squad.

Football Operations continuedThe2012StateCupsawanincreaseinnominationswith65entriesfromclubsthroughoutNorthernNSW.Anewformatestablishedforthe2012Cupprovidedgreateropportunitiesforcommunityclubstoreachthefinals.UltimatelyNBNStateLeaguegiantsBroadmeadowMagicFCdefeatedCoffsUnited4–0intheFinalatCoffsHarbour.

NNSWFhostedtheFFABoysandGirlsNationalYouthChampionshipsfortheseventhconsecutiveyearandwillcontinuetodosoatleastuntil2014.

NNSWFhasgratefullyacceptedtheopportunitytomanagetheNewcastleJetsparticipationintheWestfieldW-Leaguetoensurethatapathwaycontinuestoexistfortalentedyoungfemaleplayersinourregion.

NNSWFfacilitatedseveralmeetingsoftheZoneManagers’committeetomaintainthestrongworkingrelationshipthatexiststhroughoutNNSWF.Themeetingshavedevelopedcloserlinksamongtheprofessionaladministratorsandassistedtheestablishmentofconsistentadministrationproceduresandmoreeffectivecommunication.Additionalmeetingswillbescheduledin2013andwillbeattendedbyallofNNSWF’sExecutives.

ThesponsorshipisthelargestsingleinvestmentinjuniorfootballinNNSWF’shistoryandreflectsthenurturingofanassociationwithTheNewcastlePermanentwhichcommencedin2008.

ThroughtheNewcastlePermanent’ssupport,everyentrylevelplayerwhoregisteredinseason2012receivedafreeballandshinpads,aninitiativethathelpedcontributetoanincreaseof12%inentrylevelregistrationsduringtheperiod.

Thesuccessfulsponsorshipoutcomewasaresultofthe‘bundling’ofNNSWFsponsorshipassetsintospecificpropertiesthatencompassedthemainactivitiesofeachrespectivefunction–includingjuniorfootball,seniorfootball,HighPerformance,refereesandwomen’sfootball.

Inanothersponsorshipcoup,theHunterRegion’slargestintegratedautomotivegroup,theKlosterGroup,enteredintoarelationshipwithNNSWFforthesupplyofofficialvehicles.ThisgrassrootsassociationwithNNSWFcomplementsKloster’sexistingpartnershipwithelitefootballasofficialvehiclesuppliertotheNewcastleUnitedJets.

nnSWF FacilityInwhatcouldbethegreatesteverboosttofootballinthenorthofNSW,NorthernNSWFootballandLakeMacquarieCityCouncilhaveannouncedajointbidtoconstructtheregion’sfirststate-of-the-artfootballfacility.

Theproposed$11millionfacilitywouldbebuiltontheexistingunder-utilisedfootballfacilityatSpeersPointPark,SpeersPoint,LakeMacquarie.

Therevitalisedsitewouldfeaturemultiplefive-a-sidesyntheticfootballcourts,twofull-sizesyntheticfootballpitches,aswellasamulti-purposeadministrationbuilding,trainingfacilitiesandcarparkingformorethan100vehicles,allonacentrally-locatedsiteclosetotransportlinks.

TheproposedprojecthasthebackingofHunterRegionMPs,theRegion’snationalsportingteams,theNewcastleJetsandNewcastleKnights,NorthernNSWFootball’smemberzones,andassociatedclubs,schoolsandsportsgroups.

NorthernNSWFootballhascommittedupto$4milliontotheprojectandLakeMacquarieCityCouncilhaslodgedaclaimfora$7.3millionfundinggrantfromtheNSWGovernment,undertheHunterInfrastructureandInvestmentFund.

TheDepartmentofRegionalAustralia,LocalGovernment,ArtsandSporthascontributed$140,000foraFeasibilityStudyontheproject,underitsCommunityInfrastructureGrantsProgram.

IftheNSWLiberalsandNationalsGovernmentapprovesthefundinggrant,CouncilandNorthernNSWFootballcouldbeginconstructionbyApril2014.

Employee BenefitsProvisionismadefortheCompany’sliabilityforemployeeentitlementsarisingfromservicesrenderedbyemployeestobalancedate.Employeeentitlementsexpectedtobesettledwithinoneyeartogetherwithentitlementsarisingfromsalariesandwages,andannualleavewhichwillbesettledafteroneyearhavebeenbroughttoaccountattheirnominalrate.Otheremployeeentitlementspayablelaterthanoneyearhavebeenmeasuredatthepresentvalueoftheirestimatedfuturecashoutflowstobemadeforthoseentitlements,usingappropriateestimationtechniques.

Trade DebtorsAllreceivablesarecategorisedundertherequirementsofAASB139:FinancialInstruments–RecognitionandMeasurementandarerecognisedinitiallyatfairvalueandsubsequentlyatamortisedcost.Alltradeandotherreceivablesarecurrent.Tradereceivablesaregenerallyduewithin30daysfromthedateofrecognition.

The Federation was established 9th September 1884 as the Northern District British Football Association. To fall in line with the global football ‘identity’, a rebranding exercise took place with Northern NSW Football created on 25th October 2006.
