HISTORY OF THE MART HEINEN ATHLETIC BOOSTER CLUB

MART

HEINEN

CLUB

30 • QU HAWK SOCCER 2012

Gene Autry, Rod Laver, Andre The Giant. And, oh yes, for 34 years the most prestigious "small college" bas ket ball tour na ment in the land. A rundown of the Mart Heinen Club's pre sen ta tions would fill many pages. Members of the Hawk-cra zy booster group are a creative and en er get ic cross-sec tion of the com mu ni ty. Synonymous with the steady rise of QU's athletic program to na tion al ac claim has been the matchless input of The Mart Heinen Club -- men and women vol un teer ing on be half of the Hawks and Lady Hawks. Not all such support groups are held in such high regard. Too often those at both ma jor uni ver si ties and small colleges have al lowed their spirit and financial input to run ram pant; but words such as "pro ba tion" and "sus pen sion" have never been used in referring to sports teams at Quin cy Col lege or Quin cy Uni ver si ty. It's been 50 years since a corps of perhaps 25-30 men (no women al lowed in 1947) pooled their enthusiasm for the brand new Hawks foot ball team and formed The Quin cy College Quar ter back Club. Membership grew quickly as The Brown & White grid teams of Coach es Mac Wenskunas, Bron Bacevich and Gene McCarter thrived on their own mo men tum. The 1949 team under Coach Wenskunas and assistant Ray DeGreeff had the whole town hoppin' with its 8-1 record. Teams of that post-World War II pe ri od were load ed with veterans of military ser vice and it took a very gritty youngster to come out of high school and earn a place in the Hawks' lineup. That '49 team not only knocked off Western Illinois and Eastern Il li nois, which were much larger schools, but up end ed the Leathernecks and Pan thers in their own Home com ing games. Quarterback Club spirit blos somed anew with each victory and each new season. So, what a jolt it was to its mem bers and all of Quin cy in 1954 when the ad min is tra tion dropped foot ball as an in ter col le giate sport. Soccer wasn't added to the pro gram until 1964. Dropping football was not a popular decision among Quarterback Clubbers and other fans; but then the club was so solid it wasn't ready to wither away. Basketball had been gaining mo men tum here un der Coaches DeGreeff, Fran Willett and Harry Forrester. Harry had just come on the scene and guys in the booster club liked his dedication to the school and to the game. But "Quarterback" was no long er an ap pro pri ate name for the Hawks' booster or ga ni za tion. The logical name -- and it didn't take 'em long to pick it -- was Mart Heinen Club.

In the summer of 1946, Mart Heinen, QC ath let ic director and coach of all sports, had lost his life in a fire that ravaged the LaSalle Hotel in down town Chicago. Heinen was a member of the Quincy City Council as well and had gone to Chicago with Mayor Ed ward Schneidman and oth er city of fi cials. Ironically, meetings they were to at tend related to QC and its plans and hopes for wel com ing re turn ing military veterans. Launch ing the new GI Bill and bun dles of red tape that went with it was no simple mat ter. The number of sports offered grew sharp ly as the numbers of par tic i pants in creased, but bas-ket ball led the way. Under its new name, The Mart Heinen Club was anxious to establish an iden ti ty, and the deci-sion to sponsor a holiday basketball tournament seemed to be a bold move at the time. But the first one was a tre men dous success. Tournaments were so few at the time that a strong field was booked -- even though the first telephone calls weren't made until Oc to ber. Less then three months later the title game here between Christ mas and New Year's saw Western Illinois topping St. Ambrose (Iowa). Those teams had played a six-overtime game at Macomb earlier in the month. Other "charter" teams in the event that was to last 33 more years were Eastern Il li nois, Northeast Missouri (now Truman State), Illinois Wesleyan, Loras (Iowa), Monmouth and the host Hawks. A steady and assured cash flow from the tour na ment provided a boost for QC athletics and made possible such major projects as construction of the Me mo ri al Gym Annex. The Annex, now taken for granted, was built more than a decade after the open ing of the gym na si um. In addition to housing Con ces sions, the Annex serves as a setting for meetings, musical pre sen ta tions and other ac tiv i ties. The Holiday Tournament served as a magnet, attracting full-house crowds and a record mem-ber ship for The Heinen Club. Membership was con sis tent ly over 850. The tourney soon featured teams from schools with en roll ments from 400 to 21,000. Future NBA stars Dick Barnett and John Barnhill from Tennessee State, Lucious (Luke) Jackson of Pan American and Jack Sikma of Illinois Wes ley an helped draw ca pac i ty turnouts. Charley Vaughn of South ern Il li nois-Carbondale, Henry Logan from Western Carolina and Archie Talley of Salem (W. Va.) are still remembered, as were many of the Hawk players coached by Forrester, Pim Goff, John Ortwerth and Sherrill Hanks.
