Mackay Regional Council RADF Initiatives 2012

Mackay Sesquicentennial pictorial publication concept development

Artform:Museums/Collections

Amount of Grant:$20,000

Project Description:

Mackay Sesquicentennial pictorial publication concept development

The Mackay Region celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2012 and an opportunity exists to undertake the concept development for the creation of a pictorial book celebrating this milestone. The Mackay Regional Council has a large range of initiatives planned to celebrate its 150th anniversary including heritage exhibitions at its regional art gallery, reinvigorating memorials established to celebrate the creation of the town, a major heritage fair at historic Greenmount Homestead and a number of other initiatives. In Council’s planning for its 150th celebrations at a workshop involving Council and community participants, the idea of a pictorial collection celebrating the 150th anniversary was raised as a project that could create signifi cant community interest and involvement in the celebration.

The initial concept is that local historians and the regional community could be engaged to provide historical photographs, paintings and other graphical material such as historic town plans which could be brought together to form a pictorial history of the region. The Mackay Regional Council which is a product of the 2008 Council amalgamations has no combined publications detailing its rich history and the 150th anniversary provides a strong opportunity to bring together residents of the two former shires and council to compile the fi rst ever combined history of the region. The idea to utilize pictures rather than words to tell the story creates the opportunity to engage a broad cross section of the community from seniors who could contribute old family photos to young children who could be encouraged to submit their own drawings or photographs of historic sites. Ideas under consideration include a then and now section detailing what historic sites looked like in the distant past paired with a picture of the site in current times to show the evolution of the town.

This project created a blending of arts areas to create extremely positive and professional outcomes. It established for the artists themselves the need to continue to provide collaborative art experiences for community members and for those who participated gave them the confi dence and inspiration to continue their own art experiences. The community was given many opportunities to enjoy, admire and be inspired by this project and its outcome. It created an acceptance of difference within the community and highlighted the incredible courage and confi dence that this project has created within the participants. It established links between the various artistic groups and allowed everyone to experience a whole range of artistic areas that already exist and can be accessed. For arts workers it highlighted the amazing and unforeseen outcomes that can emerge when working across differing areas of the arts.
