President’s Message Dear ERM Colleagues, 2012 has been a year of growth and evolution for the ERM Foundation. US programs are aligning with global Foundation practices to strengthen the reach of ERM’s helping hand around the world. The Board of Directors is committed to nurture the fundraising and grant award programs that are the soul of the US Foundation, while creating new opportunities for ERMers to become more involved with local, national and international Foundation projects. Each and every year, your generosity and volunteer spirit grows to new heights. This report tells the story of your commitment to give and to give back throughout 2012. Whether it is a brown bag lunch where ERMers gather to inspire campaign giving; a river clean-up event uniting ERMers in support of their communities; individuals who selflessly donate the value of a hard-earned award; or a clean water project in a developing country that will forever improve lives. Together, we are making a world of difference. I begin my second year as Board President with great pride in the work that we have all accomplished and the lives we have bettered. Every day I am inspired by your enthusiasm to contribute your time and dedication to support those in your respective communities and beyond. I am excited and encouraged by the opportunities ahead. President’s MessageDear ERM Colleagues,

2012 has been a year of growth and evolution for the ERM Foundation.

With gratitude,

Stefan Schwietzke was awarded the 2012 Sustainability Fellowship in the amount of $15,000 for his proposal to assess the impact of increased production of natural

gas through the unconventional exploration and produc-tion activities, and the effects of methane leakage on the climate and the comparison of those impacts as a replace-ment for coal as a primary energy source. Stefan is a PhD candidate in the Department of Engineer-ing and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA and is being mentored by ERM Partner, Leonard (Lenny) Rafalko.

The Sustainability Fellowship was created to support entre-preneurial graduate students who want to implement their visions for a more sustainable world. Applicant proposals underwent blind reviews by an internal panel from the ERM sustainability team, and finalist expanded proposals underwent a blind review by an external panel of industry and academic experts in the field of sustainability. Special thanks to these distinguished volunteers:Internal Review Panel: Jennifer Eastes, Hillary Nussbaum-Kellogg, James (Jimmy) Margolis and Roberto Piccioni.External Review Panel: Craig R. Changing Lives – A Recipient Story

Thanks to International Action and your generous contributions, Rochelle’s story has a happy ending.Rochelle’s Haitian neighborhood had no safe drink-

ing water and waterborne diseases including cholera, typhoid and chronic diarrhea were widespread. One of Ro-chelle’s sisters had to stop going to school for two months due to chronic diarrhea caused by contaminated water. But their lives were changed forever when International Action installed water chlorinators in Rochelle’s neighborhood. “One of the best days I can remember is when I discov-ered that the water station in my neighborhood had safe drinking water,” said Rochelle. “Once there was clean water, life got better.” Rochelle’s sister has recovered and has not missed any time from school in two years. Solar lights were installed near the chlorinator water station so people, especially women, are able to safely collect water at night. And, thanks to the clean water system installed by Inter-

national Action, Rochelle will be starting nursing school in 2013 using the money her family has saved on water.International Action works to help Haitian communities and schools access clean, safe water through the installa-tion of inexpensive, easy-to-use chlorinator systems. Local communities are involved in the planning, implementation, operation and sustainability of the system. In 2012 alone, International Action provided clean water for an additional 160,000 Haitians, including 16 schools, 10 public water stations, one hospital, and police station. As of January 2013, more than 900,000 Haitians have permanent access to clean, safe water. ERM Group Foundation awarded International Action $20,000 in December 2011 and $15,000 in December 2012. Your generosity is making a world a difference to the people of Haiti. To learn more, visit: www.HaitiWater.org.

“Without the grant from the ERM North America Foundation we would not have been able to complete the first 10 school installations. Furthermore, the support by the ERM Foundation

helped encourage Child Relief International to support the project as well. They saw the support from the ERM Foundation and were compelled to help us install chlorinators at 18 additional com-munities and schools throughout the Southeast of Haiti.” - Zachary Brehmer, International Action

Inspiring Environmental Stewards – A Partnership Story

Six years ago the Society of Women Engineers, South-east Florida Section (SWE SEFL) joined forces with their local Girl Scout council to provide meaningful

science workshops inspiring participants to learn more about engineering and its positive impact on the world. Today, this unique and valuable partnership has reached more than 1,000 scouts, increasing demand for additional and larger events.Three workshops during 2012 educated almost 200 Scouts on the science of water and its importance in the world. Workshop themes of “Love Water”, “Save Water” and

“Share Water” provided educational, hands-on activities including demonstration sessions, water cycle craft projects and a river clean-up collecting 75 pounds of trash! The Society of Women Engineers, Southeast Florida Sec-tion of has received three consecutive grant awards from the ERM Foundation. The Foundation’s grant reader team acknowledged SWE’s “perfect match” partnership with Girls Scouts to inspire tomorrow’s engineers and scientists.

Girl Scouts participate in water cycle workshops and a river cleanup thanks to environmental education programs presented by SWE SEFL.

Giving Back – A Volunteer Story

In 2009 when Chris Mattingly offered technical support to a graduate student project team at Georgetown Uni-versity’s Public Policy Institute to provide clean water

in a developing country, he would never have guessed the impact he would have on a small town on the island of Roatán, Honduras; nor the impact that the people of La Colonia Balfate would have on him. The most recent trip was a blast (January 2013). We were focused on completing one tank project, starting another, and determining the specific yield of the well for future planning. On my first day in town, I went to help/observe the effort to get the tanks up the mountain to their reinforced concrete pads. The two tanks are 10’ diameter, 12’ tall, and weigh about 1,500 pounds each. There’s about 300 feet of elevation change (steep) from the base of the community to the tank plots. Moving the tanks, like all other manual labor, is the responsibility of the community. We had agreed that we needed about 20 people to perform the feat. By noon, only two had shown. By 2:30pm, we had 10 men. They tipped over the first tank and rolled it to the base of the first climb. Rolling a massive poly tank through a small Honduran town is the equivalent of

moving the Shuttle Endeavour through Los Angeles. By the time they were done the first leg, we had about 20 hands, 5 children on bikes, and 3 dogs following us. It was quite the scene.

By the time we got to the steeper, narrower leg, we had 30 men. Some were on the path ahead, taking down fences and brush with machetes, and flattening the earth with shovels. Others were organizing and deciding which path to take, and how. We had about 20 hands on the tank at all times—pushing, pulling, and generally hucking the tank up the mountain. We dropped the tank in its place from a path about 5 feet above the concrete pad. As slow as we could, we let it down, but it still

made a firm and satisfying “THUNK” sound when it hit the platform. With the sun set-ting, we took a vote and decided we would meet tomorrow at 6am to finish the job with the other tank.I’m not sure I really understood it fully my-self, but we are making a world of difference to the people of La Colonia Balfate—you would only know it by the look of pride in their faces after a new water tank goes THUNK at the top of a mountain. Chris has committed more than 300 tech-nical volunteer hours in addition to four weeks of in-country time since 2009. This

project has received $33,573 in grant awards and 60 hours of pro bono time. Special thanks to Spencer Pierini, Henry He, Matt Botzler, Steven Vickery, and Michael Pettit for also lending their expertise to help provide safe and clean water to the people of Balfate.

Community members work to position the tanks onto their concrete pads on top of the mountain. Two water tanks will provide clean, chlorinated water to the 170 families, 800 people, of La Colonia Balfate, Honduras.

The Board of Directors sincerely thanks ERM employees, alumni and friends who gave generously throughout 2012, and gratefully acknowl-edges the year-round commitment and philanthropic support of ERM

Group and the Global Matching Funds Committee.
