Welcome to the one marathon you won’t want to end.

A race so rock ‘n’ roll, the mile markers are rock bands.

Because what’s the point of running if you just want it to end?

Here, you might not break the tape, but the podium isn’t the point.

Life is a journey and running should be a celebration.

City of Virginia Beach

Dear Runners and Friends,

On behalf of the residents and businesses of the City of Virginia Beach, welcome to our wonderful seaside city and the Twelfth Annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon.

We are absolutely thrilled to host America’s premier half marathon and to be a partner in such a world-class sporting event. As a host city with the slogan “Virginia Beach – Live the Life,” we can truly understand and appreciate an event such as Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach. Live bands at every mile, 10 cheerleading squads along the course and a Train headliner concert on the beach – what fun!

My hat and heart go out to all the runners and walkers participating in this event. I especially want to salute those outstanding individ-uals who are raising funds through one of the event’s offi cial charity training programs- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Hope for the Warriors®, RUNWATER, Virginia Association of the Nurse Anesthetists, The Hall Steps Foundation, The Mission Continues, and many others raising awareness and important funds for patients and their families.

We hope that you will fi nd time to enjoy the Verizon Wireless American Music Festival and many other activities and attractions that Virginia Beach has to offer this Labor Day weekend.Enjoy your stay and please come back again.

Sincerely,

William D. Sessoms, Jr.Mayor

Andrew Griffitts started his GET FIT team in honor of his brother-in-law Senior Chief D. Blake McLendon, who was killed in Afghanistan on September 21, 2010. Blake was stationed out of Little Creek, Virginia with Naval Special Warfare. Andrew has gathered a group of sailors and many of their fam-ily members to run the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon in honor of their fallen sailor and help raise money for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (www.TAPS.org). Although this will be the first half marathon for many of the teammates- their thoughts will be with Blake all the way to the finish line.

Train has become best known for the unprec-edented success of its album “Save Me, San Francisco,” featuring the single “Hey, Soul Sister.” “The fact that ‘Hey, Soul Sister’ was the No. 1 most downloaded song of 2010 got us another Grammy, and the album go-ing platinum was a clear reminder that love of music and love for our fans is the answer to us being a successful group as well as successful individuals,” says vocalist Pat of the chart-topper. We are still blown away and very grateful.”

You may not have been rocking to them in 1994, but that’s where it all began when Pat Monahan (vocals), Jimmy Stafford (guitar), and Scott Underwood (drums) formed the band known as Train. After playing in San Francisco for two years and unsuccessfully landing a record deal the troop decided to produce their own record. They did some-thing right considering Columbia Records signed them after hearing it. The band went on to produce hit singles such as “Drops of Jupiter” and win three Grammy Awards.

Nature’s Child

Nature’s Child is one of the hot-test reggae sensations on the East Coast. Based in Virginia Beach, Va., this band is multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-talented in rock, jazz, Latin, blues, funk and, of course, reggae. Their four-song demo CD has gotten rave reviews from all who have heard it. The energy that they bring to the state is contagious and highly explo-sive. The band has been playing up and down the East Coast, opening for many of reggae’s top artists.

Cheap ThrillsExpect the unexpected with Cheap Thrills. Covering genres ranging from rock to pop to hip-hop, Cheap Thrills delivers it all. They will have you singing and dancing to songs by artists such as Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer and more. Cheap Thrills can entertain any crowd. They have a love and passion for music that is evident during every performance. Members of Cheap Thrills have shared the stage with some big acts, such as Destiny’s Child, NERD, Ashanti and Chris Brown. Full of energy and hype, this band will leave you wanting more.

PridemoreThe front man of Pridemore, Frank Laster, hit the music scene out of nowhere early in January 2011 as a solo guitarist/vocal-ist. His journey began once he started going to open mics and playing a few tunes in between sets at shows of a couple local musician friends. It wasn’t until he started making his way on the stages around Hampton Roads did he run into his current band mates Jeff Hess, Mike Hedderly, and Angel Lopez, who were already in three-piece band together. It wasn’t long be-fore they decided to join forces to create a whole new band with a very unique sound and look. Like a puzzle, things then began to just fall in place. Around June of last year they formed Pridemore, an energetic and exciting cover band that can play the best classic rock, new rock, new country, soft rock, alterna-tive rock, pop, and hip-hop tunes.

REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK GET SPONSOREDEndurance athletes, trainers and sports nutrition experts all know the importance of an athlete’s after. Every athlete has his or her own after-workout or after-competition ritual, and your After can make a dramatic difference in how you feel and how you perform during your next tough workout.

That’s why athletes – from the most elite to the everyday – turn to lowfat chocolate milk as part of their recovery routine. Chocolate milk has what athletes need to recover after a hard workout, including:

• A natural source of high-quality protein to build and repair lean muscle.

• The right carb-to-protein ratio scientifically shown to refuel exhausted muscles.

• Fluids and electrolytes – including calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium – to help replenish what’s lost in sweat.

If you’re a passionate athlete who grabs lowfat chocolate milk as part of your After, submit a video and get your friends and fans to vote for you to secure a spot on Team REFUEL.

Explain what makes up your personal after-workout ritual – and the role chocolate milk plays in it – and you could score:

• $500 sponsorship• Top notch Team REFUEL training gear• Chance to compete for Team REFUEL at the 2013 Rock ‘n’ Roll Edinburgh or Madrid Marathon & 1/2 • Chance to star in a national “got chocolate milk?TM” ad

$1 will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for each vote.–Mirinda Carfrae,

Justin Legg recently retired from serving our country as a Navy SEAL for more than a decade, and during that time he developed Leukemia. Treat-ing his diagnosis included more than 50 treatments of chemotherapy, six rounds of full-body radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. Following the transplant Justin suffered from Graft-versus-host disease, which attacked his liver, eyes, skin, GI tract, mouth, and lungs. This accompanied by a myriad other complications left him in need of a double lung transplant to survive. After three months of waiting, two weeks of which were in a coma, Justin, 60 lbs lighter, received his new lungs in July of 2010.

Just eight months after his transplant, Justin walked the Shamrock Half-Marathon and raised over $38,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). This year he hopes to beat that amount, as well as walk and run the Virginia Beach Rock ’n’ Roll Half-Marathon. An incredible feat considering that his new lungs can only move about 60 percent of the air that most people can in one breathe.

If an individual raises $50,000 or more for the LLS though a Team in Training event, that person is able to name a research project funded by the society. Justin has taken on the challenge to complete this race and surpass last year’s fundraising efforts to name a project after the young man whose lungs keep him alive today, Jarred McKinley Carter. On his fundraising page Justin says, “Sometimes terrible things happen in this world. What we do afterwards defines who we are and helps us build our character.”

For many of you, this will be your first marathon or half marathon. Whether this is your first or fiftieth race, congratulations on your commitment to fitness and a healthy lifestyle! Whether you choose to run, walk or just rock, the following tips will help to ensure you have a fun and safe Rock ‘n’ Roll experience.

If you have questions, please visit RNRSportsMedicine.com, stop by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Sports Medicine Team booth at the Expo or visit one of our Medical Tents on race day. We would be happy to assist you. Have fun, be smart, and stay within your limits. In other words, Rock On…

TRAIN It’s too late to start now, but you need to respect the distance you’ve chosen to walk or run. There are many different training programs available to you. Be sure you chose one that had you complete at least 2/3 of the race distance several times during your training period. If not, slow down and participate at a comfortable pace.

HYDRATE If you have not calculated your fluid needs for this race, there are two strategies which will ensure you don’t under or over-hydrate. The easiest is to only drink when you are thirsty. If you want to be a little more scientific, limit fluid intake to 4-8 oz of sports drink every 20 minutes For more information on hydration strategies, please visit our website..

SALT Losing salt through sweating and complex hormone changes during exercise can result in lowering your serum [blood] sodium level. This will not only affect your performance, it may lead to muscle cramping, headache, dizziness and confusion. Have some sports drink along the course to quench your thirst, or follow your pre-planned schedule.

PLEASE Fill out the medical informa-tion section on the back of your bib number. While serious medical problems are quite rare, knowing any medical problems you have, medications you are taking or allergies to medications is extremely helpful to our Medical Volunteers. Our goal is to treat all of our athletes like Rock Stars!

Virginia Beach has never seen anything like this. To celebrate the year of the dragon, P.F. Chang’s has entered a 43-foot dragon

into this year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon!

We have to warn you, he is a seasoned veteran after completing the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon, St. Jude Country Music Nashville Half Marathon, Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half Marathon, and XSport Fitness Rock ‘n’ Roll Chicago Half Marathon. So, we hope you’ve kept up with your training!

If you beat the P.F. Chang’s Running Dragon in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon, you will get a coupon good for an order of P.F. Chang’s famous Lettuce Wraps. And if that’s not incentive enough to beat the dragon – just remember, you don’t want to be near him if he starts breathing fire!

The P.F. Chang’s Running Dragon is made up of several parts. The 43-foot dragon costume was flown in from China specifically to be the P.F. Chang’s Running Dragon at eight select Rock ‘n’ Roll races this year. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon P.F. Chang’s Running Dragon will be comprised of 10 local runners who are excited to bring something new to the course!

So, go ahead and make your post-race reservations to celebrate at P.F. Chang’s now. Just visit their website at www.pfchangs.com/reservations.

EVENT GUIDE

Page 40: 2012 Rock 'n' Roll Virginia Beach Event Guide

Last year, Abigail Williams set out on a mission to change her life. At almost 400 lbs, she was considered morbidly obese and knew that a change needed to happen. As her 2011 New Year’s Resolution, Abigail’s goal was to run 1 mile by her 28th birthday, and start living a healthy and active lifestyle. After doing much research, Abigail enlisted the help from her sister (who had previously participated in Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathons) and any friends that would help her stay on track. Within two weeks, she had completed her first “fully-run” mile. By her 28th Birthday, Abigal had completed her first 5k- something she never thought was achievable.

Less than a year later, Abigail began training for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Mar-athon. With a weight loss of 120 lbs and a much healthier and active lifestyle, Abigail’s next sights are on finishing a full marathon. In her own words, Abigail is ‘paying it forward’ by sharing the tools I acquired with friends and family, inspiring others to achieve their absolutely-possible-dreams of healthier, happier futures!

What is her race day plan? “Until I puke, faint, or die, i’m going to keep running”!

Susan Turano has set an incredible goal with her sister and two childhood friends- to run a half marathon in all fifty states. To date, Susan and her posse have actively pursued their goal and have completed half marathons in 11 states. “It’s been fun flying, driving and planning our road trips around the country. However, Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach will mean the most to me”. Last October, Susan was diagnosed with cancer and was forced to spend a year in treatment. On her road to recovery, Susan will be celebrating a bigger accomplishment than many- “Crossing the finish line in my short, spikey hair (I like to call it artsy) will have a deeper meaning to me and a greater appreciation for the amazing doctors and nurses at Cleveland Clinic that made it happen”.
