Bienvenido a GEAR UP • Eligiendo Cursos En La Secundaria • Estadísticas Que Usted Debe Saber

Welcome to GEAR UP • Choosing Middle School Courses • Statistics You Should Know

Your student will be involved in GEAR UP until graduation in May 2017. GEAR UP is designed to help students reach their full potential and be prepared for life after high school, whether that is college, a trade school, military or joining the workforce.

We have several goals for our Class of 2017:1 . Increase the academic performance

and preparation for college or a career after high school

2 . Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in college or a career after high school.

3 . Increase GEAR UP students’ and their families’ knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation and financing.

This newsletter will be our tool to provide information about what students need to be working on or toward through each school year. We want parents to be actively involved

in their student’s education, and we hope through this newsletter we will keep lines of communication open to fully help students reach their goals.

This newsletter will be sent home every other month.

It will be filled with a lot of useful information, including:

z Information about classes and programs in which they need to be involved

z Helpful tips and resources so you can help your student succeed in class

z General information and deadlines about classes and projects students should be involved in as they progress through these next five years.

The GEAR UP program is funded through the Department of Education. We are in partnership with Stephen F. Austin State University and Angelina College as well as Hudson, Central, Nacogdoches and Woden school districts.

Please, feel free to call or email me with any questions, concerns or issues. I will be with this group of students until they graduate.

Thank youVickie Evans | GEAR UP Coordinator

BEING READY FOR THE GAME OF LIFE BEGINS NOW!

LET’S HELP OUR CHILDREN CHOOSE THEIR NEXT MOVE

May 2012Volume 1 | Issue 1

NEED W

ORK!

The courses students choose in middle school make an impact on their high school education. You should consider several factors when

selecting your middle school classes.

Challenge your student: Select courses that match their abilities, but are also challenging. Parents, teachers and middle school counselor can help students make the right decisions. Don’t let them choose easy classes thinking that middle school doesn’t matter. The more students are challenged now, the better prepared they will be in high school.

Investigate options: Some middle school courses can be taken for high school credit.

However, realize that high school credit courses are usually very demanding and require good organizational skills and a determination to get the work done. Talk to teachers and our middle school counselor about high school credit courses in middle school.

Research available courses: Some middle school courses are also designed to help students prepare for high school.

For example, if a student likes computers and is considering taking computer classes in high school, you might want them to first take a keyboarding class in middle school. That will increase typing speed and help them be better prepared for high school courses that require knowledge of the keyboard.

Ask the counselor about the courses we offer that can help develop your student’s interests.

Meet with your student’s counselor: Visit with your student’s middle school counselor regarding interests and future plans. The counselor has a wealth of information and is anxious to share it.

Remember: The education students receive in high school is directly connected to what they do in middle school. Think about these decisions carefully.

Middle School CoursesChallenge your student

now with classes that can help in high school.

College graduates can earn up to $1.5 million more over the course of a lifetime.

Less than 40% of high school dropouts are employed each year.

90% of jobs are expected to require some postsecondary experience.

Did You Know...Statistics Every Parent (& Child) Should Know

Monitor students’ time spent outside of school. Students who participate in school events are less likely to drop out of school.

Talk to your child about educational plans. Start talking to students in kindergarten about the importance of education.

Ensuring Your Child is College & Career Ready

Insist that your child persists when learning is hard and not opt for the easy way out of school.

Hold high expectations of academic achievement.

Make sure your child is attending school. Employers and colleges look at attendance records as well as grades.

Seek information about going to college. Here are some helpful websites:

gentx.orgownyourownfuture.com

aie.org

High school graduates earn an average of $7,000 more a year than non-graduates.

High school dropouts earn an average of $14,500 a year.
