olive oil comes from Oroville. Wineries are starting to make their presence known in the area; so far there are three wineries in Oroville. Wineries are becoming popu-lar because the climate is very similar to northern Italy.

Oroville is best known for its abun-dance of recreational opportunities. Lake Oroville, which was created via the con-struction of the Oroville Dam, is one of the recreational gems of California. With nearly 16,000 surface acres of water and 167 miles of forested shoreline, hundreds of campsites, world-class fishing, boating, sailing, fishing, picnicking, hiking, bik-ing, horseback riding, fish hatchery tours, educational exhibits, and scenery wildlife, Lake Oroville is truly the great outdoors on a Western scale. It is also the second largest reservoir in California, second only to Lake Shasta. Lake Oroville is not overly crowded, and easily accessible by several highways.

The Oroville Dam, which is the tallest and one of the largest earthen dams in the world, was completed in 1968 and stands 770 feet high with a crest 6,920 feet long. Over 80 million cubic yards of material were needed to build the Oroville Dam. A giant cavern (almost as large as the State Capitol Building) was hollowed out to hold six power genera-tion units beneath the dam. Coupled with four additional units in the Thermalito Power plant, more than 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours of power are generated annually.

The City of Oroville is located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills within the Northern Sacramento Valley of

Butte County. Chico is the nearest large City to the Northwest. Paradise is to the North and Gridley to the south of Oroville. Oroville is positioned off of Highway 70 and is in close proximity to Highway 99. The City’s population is 14,408. Oroville enjoys an emerging population of retirees and new families with an average house-hold size of 2.4 persons; seventy percent of Oroville’s population is over 18 years of age (the median age is 32.6).

Butte County is located about sixty miles north of Sacramento and proclaims a strong quality of life with short commutes, vibrant downtowns areas, and unlimited outdoor activities. With a population of approximately 220,000, the county is the most populous county north of Sac-ramento. The county was rated second in the state for places to locate, listed as one of the top five places to retire by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, and cited for some of the best property buys by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Additionally, Oroville’s historic downtown has museums, antique stores and specialty shops. The historic Chinese Temple/Chinese Gar-dens is a registered California landmark. Another unique feature is that Oroville is a Mission Olive Region, the only one in the U.S. If it’s not from Oroville, it’s not Mission Olive. Roughly 50 percent of California

The Oroville Transit Center (OTC), located on Spencer Avenue, between Mitchell and Oro Dam is the focal point for Butte Regional Transit (B-Line) in Oroville. B-Line operates seven routes (four local and three regional) that serve Oroville. The OTC can accom-modate up to five buses at any one time. For passenger convenience, the transit center provides covered seating, restrooms and display panels with schedules and routing information.

CiTY OFFiCiAlS/CiTY COUnCil The City Council is the elected legislative body for the City of Oroville. It is composed of seven members, the Mayor plus six Council members, who are elected at large for four-year stag-gered terms. The elected Councilmember with the least votes is subject to a two year term. The Mayor is directly elected by the city voters in a separate election held at the same time as the general election. The Vice-Mayor is selected from among the six City Council members by vote of the City Council. The City of Oroville is a council-manager form of govern-

ment. The City Council ap-points a full time City Admin-istrator to implement Council policies and executive func-tions of government, which includes day-to-day opera-tions, functions and projects of the City. In establish-ing city policy, the Council works with advisory commit-tees made up of citizens ap-pointed by the Council, and receives input from the pub-lic at both regular and special meetings. The Council’s busi-ness meetings are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. The Council meets at 7:00 P.M. and the Redevelopment Agency Commission meets immediately following the Council Meetings. The Council Chambers are located at 1735 Montgomery St, Oroville, CA. The City Council meetings are rebroadcast on the local cable channel. Other special or study session meetings are scheduled as needed and are open to the public. The public is always invited and encouraged to attend. Members of the Council also serve on Boards, Commissions and Committees important to the City. Council members serve on the Butte County Association of Governments (BCAG), the Sewerage Commission - Oroville Region (SCOR), Lake Oroville Joint Powers Authority and may serve on the Local Agency For-mation Commission (LAFCo), Supplemental Benefits Fund (SBF). The Council has a number of Ad hoc and standing com-mittees that are designed to solve public policy. Furthermore, the City Council sits as the Commission for the Oroville Re-development Agency and Board of Directors for the Oroville Public Financing Authority. The City Council welcomes your interest in community affairs. If you wish, the Customer Service Department can assist you by explaining items on the Council agenda, or help in contacting members of the City Council (538-2535). Public Participation Often, there are public hearings at Council and Commission meetings. A public hearing is when the public can speak, com-ment, or question certain government policy items. This is a good way for the public to influence the policy decision process and outcome of the policy. Also, the City Council encourages residents to bring concerns to the public policy process. CiTY DePARTMenTS The Oroville City govern-ment is managed by the City Administrator. The City Ad-ministrator manages the exec-utive management team, which consists of the Chief of Police, Fire Chief, Director of Plan-ning and Development, Public Works, Director of Parks and Trees, Director of Business Assistance and Housing Development and the Finance Director. The management team is appointed by the City Council. The City Administrator’s role is to control and operate day-to-day management of public services and programs under the policies and direction of the City Council. The City Administrator, like the department heads, serves at the pleasure of the City Council. Oroville is a Charter City and therefore is allowed under Califor-nia State Law to adopt a charter by popular vote of the electorate for certain provisions (which may be different from general laws

established for municipalities in the State of California). A city charter is much like a constitution giving more autonomy and authority over implementing local policies. City Clerk The City Clerk functions as the City’s official recorder at all City

Council meetings. Also, the Clerk’s office maintains the City’s official documents and provides public access for their review by community residents. MandarinsMandarin is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel,

which have been dubbed “kid-glove” oranges. The Mediterranean climate of Butte County and the clay loam soil of the foothills around Oroville make an ideal growing area for mandarin farmers. The county presently supports 162 acres of citrus much of that around Oroville and much in mandarin orchards. Lou and Lola Lodigiani farm the five acre Tri l Man-darin Ranch. During a good year their 850 trees will produce 85 tons of Owsari Satsuma mandarins. Cultivation of mandarins began in Southeast China going back to the 12 century B.C. Spanish missionaries introduced citrus throughout California during the 1700’s.

The Mt. ida Mandarin Ranch grows three varieties of Satsumas on the property including Owari mandarins which are the primarily shipping variety. All of their mandarins are tree-ripened, hand-picked, and bagged or shipped within days of coming off the tree. No artificial ripeners, or refrigeration is used.

Morse Farms was established in 2002, when the family planted 400 Satsuma Owari mandarin trees in the eastern foothills of Oroville. The orchard was planted using sustainable farming methods such as micro-emitter sprinkler heads to reduce water usage, grass between the rows to re-duce soil erosion. Sprays are kept to a minimum. Each piece of fruit is hand wiped with a white terry cloth towel.Rice

Rice is the mainstay of life for about one billion people in the world. California is the key supplier of U.S. grown rice and rice is one of the leading crops produced in Butte County. Richvale, California is home to Lundberg Family Farms’ where rice growing and processing techniques

have been developed out of the Lundberg family’s deep-rooted beliefs about the land and surrounding ecology. In 1937, before most folks gave any thought to organic farming, Albert Lun-dberg decided to take a new approach to rice farming. He treated the land-and the wildlife that lived on it-with respect. “We believe a healthy soil will produce healthy food. We believe the soil is living, and as such needs to be fed and cared for,” says Albert’s son Harlan. Olives

Olives have been a part of the Oroville area for over 100 years starting with Mrs. Ehmann in 1898. Climate and soil are particularly adapted to olive culture. Butte County olives are known the world over. Oroville, the birthplace of commercial Cali-fornia olive production, claims a distinct regional flavor and style to its oil. Several local growers produce world class olive oils.

Franco Giannecchini, owner of Giannecchini’s Sunset Olive Grove farms 40 acres (1700 trees) that have been growing in the area for over a 100 years. Sunset grows both Manzanella (25%) and Mission olives (75%) and some oil is a blend of the two.

The roots of Butte View Olive Company go back to 1935 with 85 acres of olive trees. Since then, another 65 acres of trees have been acquired. The

orchards consist mainly of Mission, Ascolona Manzanella olives. Today Butte View Olive Company produces up to 1,000 cases of oil annually and also presses for other growers in the area.

lodestar Farms started ten years ago when Jamie Johansson pur-chased 40 acres containing 2,500 olive trees. Originally he sold all of his fruit, but today bottles under the Lodestar Farms label selling less fruit. Lodestar produces regular and lemon-flavored extra virgin olive oil.

Mission Harvest Olive Oil is cold pressed from 100-year-old olive trees. The orchard includes 20 acres of mission olive trees that produce herbaceous fruit with a slightly buttery flavor and scent.

The Berkeley Olive Grove 1913 spans 500 acres of mission olive trees that were planted by the University of California in 1913. The 500-acre site was chosen for its unique volcanic soil and climate.

Chaffin Family Orchards is a five generation family farm located in a warm air belt that wraps around the town of Oroville, California. The farm has been harvesting and producing olives and olive oil for over 75 years. For over 50 years the farm has produced beef cattle, citrus, stone fruits, and avocados. Chaffin uses a combination of Organic, Natural, and Biodynamic Farming methods.

Founded in 1998 on 733 acres, California Olive Ranch, a privately held company, is America’s largest grower and processor of olive oil. California Olive Ranch pioneered a relatively new farming method from Spain called “Super High Density Planting.” Employing this method, over a million Spanish and Greek varietal olive trees grow in hedge rows 570 to 670 trees per acre vs. traditional plantings of 100 to 150 trees per acre. Harvesting is accomplished using high speed harvest-ing machines reducing the picking time from hours and days to minutes.Wine

Before the olive, almond, and citrus orchards came to the Oroville area, there were many thriving vineyards nestled in the foothills. These vineyards disappeared when Prohibition came along. The area has the right combina-tion of soil, sun, wind, and water to produce grapes with deep color, balanced acidity, soft tannins, and intense concentrated fruit flavors.”

Grey Fox Vineyards, a vineyard of almost 11 acres. is owned by Bruce and Pat Arrigoni and Gary and Jeanne Cecchi. In 1996 the first vines of Sangiovese, Barbera, Syrah, and Zinfandel were planted followed a few years later by Muscat, Dolcetto, Grenache and Viognter. A computer- con-trolled press, stainless steel tanks with temperature control help facilitate the process, yet still allow for personal hands-on attention.

long Creek Winery, grows and bottles Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. Besides the estate wines, Long Creek also produces a Barbera, Sangiovese, Merlot, Muscat, Syrah Port, Chardonnay and a new Collage. Long Creek Winery uses very traditional wine-making methods with no blending or filtering of wines. Long Creek Winery produces 30 tons of grapes and bottles between 2,000 and 3,000 cases.

Quilici Vineyards comprises 10 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese and Barbera grapes. Quilici Vineyards owner Gary Quilici’s wine making began as a hobby 22 years ago. The first plantings were 1998, followed by two planting in 1999 and a final plant-ing in 2004. Everything produced is estate grown and hand crafted.

Hickman Family Vineyards is a boutique winery nestled in the Sierra Nevada Foothills at 900 feet of elevation. The Mediterranean cli-mate, combined with the mineral rich soil creates an ideal environment for estate grown varietals. Cooler climate varietals are sourced from select hand tended vineyards throughout the North State.

Rail The Union Pacific Mainline provides service to the greater Oroville area with daily east-west freight trips into the Union Pacific rail yard.

Market Profile - HousingOroville’s housing prices continue decline Residential demand in 2011 picked up from 2009 in number of homes sold. However, prices continued to decline. Much of the demand was driven by short sales and fewer by relocations from the Bay Area and Sacramento. The average price of homes sold in the Oroville area fell from $139,542 in 2009 to $117,508 in 2011 continuing the downward trend from 2008 when the average price was $179,739. The median price of raw land in the Oroville area is approximately $62,000 per acre down from a high of $100,000 in 2007. There is still an abundance of undeveloped commercial and residential land in the Oroville Planning Area.Butte County’s population is projected to grow at a rate of 1.6% per year reaching 281,558 by 2025, an increase of approximately 60,000 residents in the next 13 years.

lease To Purchase ProgramThe City of Oroville has created the Lease to Purchase Program

(LPP) that is designed to assist low and moderate-income families achieve home ownership that might otherwise not have the oppor-tunity (a family’s gross income may not exceed 120% of the Butte County area median income). The LPP can help individuals, many of whom have less than ideal credit and/or circumstances, purchase a home using RDA funds, maintain it, and remain a homeowner. Eligible applicants can lease a Redevelopment Agency (RDA) owned home for a period of approximately 3 years, purchasing the home at the end of the lease period. An earnest money deposit is required. Fifteen percent of all the lease payments made are ap-plied to either closing costs or the purchase price of the home, at the time of purchase. The purchase price is locked in from the beginning of the lease. Some financial management/credit coun-seling education is required of lessees as well as completion of a homebuyer education workshop. The City provides complete financing for the purchase of the property using RDA funds. A fully amortized, prime, market-rate loan with monthly payments and a 30-year term is provided at time of purchase. If needed, the City can also provide a loan subsidy up to a maximum of $50,000 with deferred payments and a 5 % simple interest rate. Market Profile - HousingSenior/Disabled Minor Home Repair loan & emergency Repair Grant ProgramsThe City of Oroville offers assis-tance to low- and lower-income individuals with small, but impor-tant home repairs or accessibility modification needs to owner-oc-cupied properties. Eligible repairs include, but are not limited to: minor bathroom modifications for wheelchair accessibility and shower handrails, entry modifica-tion, weather-stripping, replace-ment of cracked or broken windows, replacement of roofing, gutters and downspouts, repair of plumbing system, upgrade of electrical services and repair or replacement of furnaces. The maximum loan of $6,000 will be available to families with in-comes that are less than 80% of the area median income. Addi-tionally, grants are available to families that are comprised of se-nior and/or disabled individuals whose income is less than 80% of area median income. The maximum grant available to senior and/or disabled households is $2,000 lifetime limit for stick-built homes and $3,000 lifetime limit for mobile homes.

First-Time Home Buyers Program The City of Oroville's first-time home buyers (FTHB) mortgage subsidy assistance program for families earn-ing 80% of the area median income. The FTHB program expands the availability of af-fordable housing for income-qualified families providing affordable housing opportu-nities that would not other-wise be available. The home

to be purchased must be located in a residentially zoned area within the city limits of Oroville. The City of Oroville FTHB program offers a mortgage subsidy assistance loan up to a maxi-mum of $100,000 or 45% of the purchase price, (whichever is less) and provides a course of action for the primary financing and purchase of that “first time” home (family has not owned a home within the past three years). The loan has deferred pay-ments for 30 years with 3% simple interest accruing. Because purchasing a home can be overwhelming, especial-ly to the first-time home buyer, the FTHB Program assists with each phase of the process to insure a successful, timely home purchase. A mortgage subsidy loan is secured by a Deed of Trust and does not require monthly payments. Repayment of the loan will be required if the house is sold, title is transferred, or if the house is no longer the principal residence. Loans are based upon

the gross income of the family and family size. For the maxi-mum sale price of the home, contact the Department of Business Assistance and Housing Development,. OROVille DOWnTOWn BUSiNESS ASSOCiATiON The mission of the Oroville Downtown Business Association is to improve business in Historic Downtown Oroville through an on-going program of promotional events to increase public interest and the improvement of downtown environment. Any business, organiza-tion or person interested in the betterment of downtown is eligible for membership. Annual events supported by ODBA include Feather Fiesta Days Gold Rush Lot and Gold Rush Car Show, Salmon Festival Street Fair, Movies in the Park, Parade of Lights, Art Walks, Women in Histo-ry Celebration, Creeper Races and various other monthly activities. ODBA partners with local organizations to improve downtown activi-ties. The ODBA works with the City of Oroville staff, on behalf of downtown businesses, to improve the business environment. The organization plays an important role in communication through its newsletter and by being a spokesperson and focal point for communi-cation.

Economic DevelopmentSmall Business and Microenterprise Business loan ProgramsSmall Business and Microenterprise Business Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) programs, along with the City of Oroville’s Enterprise RLF Program, have been established to provide critical capital needs of businesses and real estate projects that will create and /or retain jobs as well as to pro-vide the funds necessary to bridge the “financial gap” that allows a business project to move for-ward. The RLF programs are designated to provide up to one-half of the project’s total financing needs. The RLF Programs assist businesses and projects with start-up and expansion capital for items such as working capital (inventory, supplies, wages, advertising/marketing), equipment purchases, fixtures, real property acquisition, construction and rehabilitation for businesses located in or expanding to the City of Oroville. There is no minimum loan amount; however loans may require approval by the State Dept. of Housing and Com-munity Development. A microenterprise business (a business defined as having five or fewer employees of which one or more is the owner and whose household income is below the area median) is limited to a maximum loan of $50,000.00. Small and emerging Business and Microenterprise Business Technical AssistanceThe City of Oroville provides “appropri-ate” business assis-tance, at no cost, to new and existing busi-nesses and real estate development projects

through the development and expansion process, providing an enhanced level of technical assistance necessary to increase the ability of the businesses to meet their overall business goals. Technical assistance can provide initial business assessments to determine specific need (bookkeeping, completion of docu-mentation, training, business plan, marketing plan, etc.). As-sistance may also include referral to other local service pro-viders such as financial institutions, Small Business Admin-istration (SBA), 3CORE Economic Development Center and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) of Butte County. Additionally, City staff, along with outside expert consultants, holds several educational workshops for small and microenter-

prise businesses each year. A microenterprise business is defined as having five or fewer employees of which

Oroville enterprise Zone Oroville is one of the few communities in the State that holds both Recycling Zone and Enterprise Zone designation. Enterprise Zones are state-designated economic devel-opment areas created to stimulate business growth, create jobs and stimulate investments in local communities. ReCYClinG ZOne (1993 - 2013) The California Integrated Waste Manage-ment Board established twelve “Recycling Market Development Zones” (RMDZ) on June 24, 1992, the first of their kind in the nation. The California Recycling Market Develop-ment Zone is an area set aside in a community designed to attract businesses that will convert goods from the waste stream into recycled products. The prograåm could result in the creation of thousands of jobs. Oroville’s application was number one in the second round for recycling zone designation. California’s 30 million residents generate 44 million tons of waste each year. Decreasing landfill capacity (and a public reluctance to site new landfills) has forced communities to reconsider what they do with trash. Waste is being diverted from landfills through recycling in increasing quantities. As the ability to recycle increases, new markets for recycled materials are developed. Recycling Marketing Development Zones are one step to creating these markets. Benefits to businesses include recycling equipment tax credits where the State issues a credit against an individual or corporation state tax liability. The credit is worth 40% of the

investment of qualified recycling equipment or $250,000, whichever is less. Low-interest loans are also available to encourage industry to create or convert manufacturing processes to use recy-clable materials. Community Recycling As a result of this recycling designation, Re-cology built a 22,000 square foot material recov-

ery facility at their plant on South 5th Avenue. Programs of-fered to residents in the community include a buyback center, a HHW facility, curbside recycling and greenwaste, universal waste and e-waste recycling, construction and demolition recy-cling as well as commercial business recycling programs tailor fit for each business. Recology is the first business in Oroville to be awarded a Sustainable Business Certification by the Sacramento Area Sustainable Business Program for dedicated efforts in reducing their environmental footprint. The Oroville Union High School District (ouhsd.org)

The Oroville Union High School Dis t r ic t provides quality secondary education to approximately 2,700 students who enter from seven different elementary school districts and two private schools in the Oroville area. The district’s two comprehensive high schools, Las Plumas and Oroville, provide the three A’s of traditional American high schools: academics, athletics and associated student body (ASB) activities. In addition to honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, the district offers career technical education in agriculture, business, home economics, industrial technology, health occupations and administration of justice. Students receive a wide variety of supplementary support, including but not limited to special education, Saturday school, summer school, adult night school, peer tutoring, reading and study skills courses, and on-line educational support services. The district’s alternative educational opportunities include College Connection at Butte College, Prospect High School, and Community Day School. In addition, the Oroville Adult Education Career & Technology Center offers both high school diploma and career programs to Oroville community members.

The Palermo Union School District (Palermoschools.org) serves approximately 1500 students from

pre-school through eighth grade. The District implements a standards based curriculum that is aligned with California’s State Standards. Multiple assessments are used to test students at each grade level in the various subjects, especially in reading/language arts and math-ematics and algebra. The school district is proud of its students and their academic performance.

All classrooms and computer labs are connected to the internet. Students use the internet as part of the regular curriculum, and com-puter literacy is a major goal.

The schools implement intervention plans and offer after-school tutoring for students who are “at-risk” of retention. Students are tu-tored in reading/language arts, mathematics, and algebra grade level skills. A “latch-key” after school program is available, keeping the schools open until 5:00 p.m. on most school days.

Oroville DamOroville Dam is the tallest and one of the largest earthen dams

in the USA. The dam, completed in 1968, stands 770 feet high with a crest (top of the dam) 6,920 feet long. Over 80 million cubic yards of material were needed to build the Oroville Dam. There is enough material to build a two-lane highway around the earth in the Dam.

The dam’s inner core is a thin layer made of clay material which resists seepage. Gold dredger tailings (sand & gravel left from the early 20th century gold dredging along the Feather River) make up the remainder of Oroville Dam.

Beneath the dam a giant cavern almost as large as the State Capitol Building has been hollowed out to house six power gen-eration units. Coupled with four additional units in the Thermalito Power plant, they will generate more than 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually.

Other facilities in the State Water Project are the Thermalito Forebay and Afterbay, holding reservoirs located downstream that enable utilization of a “pump-back” procedure whereby water released from Lake Oroville to generate power during “peak need” periods, will be pumped back into the lake during off-peak periods for recirculation through the powerplants.

activities including floating and boat-in campsites.Bassmaster magazine ranked Lake Oroville as the Best Bass

Fishing Spot in California and held a western division tourna-ment here in November 1999 and 2001. In addition to large and smallmouth bass, anglers will find Chinook, catfish, mackinaw, sturgeon, and brown trout.

Houseboating is popular here, as are water skiing and sailing. Lake Oroville has two designated swimming areas. Camping is accommodated in the recreation area around the lake, with boat-in campsites and ten floating campsites.

lake Oroville Visitor’s Center, run by the California Depts. of Park & Recreation and Water Resources, holds a wealth of information about the lake and the entire Oroville area.

As well as having brochures of area attractions and maps of campgrounds, hiking and horse trails, the center has more than thirty films covering subjects from the history of the gold rush era to the construction of the dam. The Bidwell Bar Suspension Bridge was built across the Feather River in 1856. Its towers were manufactured in New York and “brought around the Horn.” Soon after the initial gold discovery in California in 1848, General John Bidwell found gold in the Middle Fork of the Feather River, bringing hordes of miners to the scene and Bidwell Bar was born. Five years later, Bidwell Bar became the first county seat of Butte County.

Historic lott Home in Sank Park

A Victorian gothic revival style cottage, the C.F. Lott Historic Home, built in 1856, serves as a cultural re-pository for decorative art objects which are typical of the homes of Oro-ville’s pioneer families. The collection includes furniture, paintings, rugs, tex-tiles, clothes, silver and glassware of the period, 1849–1910.

Chinese TempleThe Oroville Chinese Temple

was built in 1863 to serve a commu-nity of 10,000 Chinese. It includes three chapels for each of the major ways of life in China. The main chapel is called Liet Sheng Kong-Temple of assorted deities. It is a place of prayer for various worships including Taoism, Confucianism and Buddhism.

In 1968, Tapestry Hall was built to display the extensive col-lection of embroidered tapestries, parade parasols and other ob-jects of beauty and value which characterize the best of Chinese folk art.

A new addition to the Temple complex, the Fong Lee Chin Shew Ting building, was dedicated on April 26th 2008. The building is a gift to the City of Oroville from the Chan Fam-ily Foundation. The building is a duplicate of a store originally opened in 1870 by Chin Kong You to sell merchandise to Chi-nese laborers working on the railroad. The Chan family are de-scendants of Mr. You.

Bolt Tool MuseumThis is the

only museum of its kind. The collec-tion now numbers over 5,000 pieces. Each is meticu-lously cataloged and referenced, and research is on-going. The tools were on display at the Bolt home for many years, when the City of

Oroville asked him to donate the col-lection. All of the tools on display were manufactured during or prior to WWII.

The House That Olive Built & BCHS Museum

The Ehmann Home has served as Butte County Historical Society (BCHS) headquarters since 1980, when the county deeded it to them. With the deed came the stipulation that the house be restored and made available to the public.

Highlights of the home include intricate stained glass windows, dark wainscoting, hardwood floors, fireplac-es, antique furniture, including a Chick-ering piano that came around the Horn, and a collection of European porcelain figures.

The Ehmann Home Museum is open for tours by appointment and on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Freda Ehmann and her son, Edwin, built the Colonial Re-vival style home at the corner of Lincoln and Robinson Streets in 1911.

The Butte County Historical Society Museum at Baldwin/Spencer Sts. houses Ishi’s jail cell door, early gold scales, pho-tographs, an amazingly detailed doll house, and many videos, among other items. Open Fridays 9-Noon & Saturdays 11–3, or call 530-533-9418.

Butte County Pioneer Memorial MuseumAs you approach this storehouse of history, a plaque embed-

ded in the sidewalk catches your eye. “This building is dedicated to Truth, Liberty, & Toleration by Native Sons of the Golden

West - May 12, 1932” it reads.The museum, operated by the City of

Oroville is located at 2332 Montgomery St., is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, Noon-4 p.m.

lake Oroville Visitors CenterVisitors to the Oroville area, as well

as school groups and organizations, find the Visitor’s Center worthy of a stop. At the center, one will find information about the State Water Project, Oroville Dam, the Feather River Fish Hatchery, history of the area, recreational opportunities, maps, books, and a museum containing displays of the State Water Project, animals of the area, Native American artifacts, and gold-mining artifacts. More than 40 videos are available for viewing on request, covering subjects from history of the gold rush and

gold dredging, to wild animals, and ghost towns. The Lake Oroville Visitor’s Center is located above Oroville

Dam at the north end of Kelly Ridge Road, and is open from 9–5, seven days a week year-round.

Hewitt Park: Picnic areas, a sandlot with playground equipment, and two old steam engines can be enjoyed in this three acre park off Baldwin Avenue with access on Daryl Porter Way. The Shay engine lo-cated on the Park Avenue side of Hewitt Park was purchased originally by the Hutchinson Lumber Company to operate on its private 20-mile logging railroad in the foothills.

Centennial Park commemorated on No-vember 29th, 2007 celebrates Oroville’s 100th Anniversary. Positioned with a commanding view of the Feather River as it proceeeds majestically southward, visitors enjoy views of Oroville Dam and the river.

Bedrock Park: Situated in 3.75 acres along the Feather River at Fifth Avenue and Safford Street, this park offers eight lighted tennis courts, an amphitheater, and picnic facilities for the visitor. Swim-ming is also available.

Feather River Parkway: Once an area where early settlers panned for gold, this three-mile stretch overlooking the Feather River is now popular with walkers joggers, and bicyclers. It is located on Arlin Rhyne Drive from Bedrock Park, just east of the Lower Thermalito Bridge, to the fish hatchery and Upper Thermalito Bridge. Salmon can be seen in the Fall making their way upriver.

Hammon Park: Playground equipment and tree-shaded picnic sites can be found in this north Oroville (Thermalito area) park off of Second Street with access from the north side of Prospect High School.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Park: This five-acre neighborhood park at 2129 B Street contains over two acres of open field for soccer, tag, frisbee, or field games. Playground equipment, an amphitheater, and picnic facilities are also provided. It is also home to the Blues Festival each July 4th holiday weekend.

Mitchell Park: This 24 acre area at Pomona and Fifth Avenues fea-tures several youth baseball and softball fields, a baseball stadium, and picnic facilities. It is also home to Playtown USA, a theme playground for children.

Nelson Park and Pool: Three lighted fields serve the Feather River Park and Recreation District’s softball program, and four youth fields are used by the

Thermalito Little League at this park on Sixth Street off Nelson Avenue. A tot lot with playground equipment and picnic tables are provided. The swimming pool is open in the sum-mer and home to local swim teams.

Palermo Park and Pool: Located at 2350 Ludlum Avenue in Palermo, this five acre park is the home of the Feather River Horseshoe Club with 12 regulation horseshoe pits. Also featured are an old-fashioned gazebo, a tot lot with playground equipment, a hardtop slab, and covered group picnic areas. The pool is open in the summer for swimming.

Rotary Park: Located between Sec-ond and Safford Avenues, Oroville’s oldest park has picnic areas, barbecue pits, playground equipment, and ball fields.

Table Mountain Table Mountain is a 3-mile long, 65 million-year-old lava flow that actually consists of two portions separated by a large chasm. The smaller section is called South Table Mountain. The southern portion is almost flat, much like a tabletop. The larger portion is North Table Mountain and is a bit more rolling than its southern counterpart. The shallow soil and abundance of rocks make Table Mountain less desirable to wild grasses but very inviting for wildflowers. The patchwork color designs of the flowers exist because of various microenviron-ments that suit one flower over another, creating zones of flowers that paint the landscape.

Oroville State Wildlife Area: Lake Oroville is home to over 11,000 acres of protected area administered by the California Department of Fish and Game. The area supports a diverse selection of indig-enous wildlife including raccoons, turkeys, opossums, coyotes, tree and ground squirrels, rabbits, deer, skunks, ring-tailed cats, and countless species of birds and fish. The 9,100-acre Gray Lodge Wildlife Area near Gridley is the most extensively used wetlands in the Pacific Flyway, attracting more than a million ducks, 100,000 geese, and thousands of other bird species annually. For the more avid photographers and viewers, a seasonal blind is available by reservation. Hunters enjoy the many species of wildlife they may take during the regulated hunting seasons. Fishing is also a high-light in the spring and summer. Educational programs, informative exhibits, a self-guided nature trail and seasonal guided tours delight thousands of visitors every year.
