Vera Lloyd lost a piece of her history with the death of H. Leroy Acree on June 16. Leroy was the beloved Superintendent of Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home from 1960 until his retirement in 1990. Louise Acree worked at the Home as the dietician for a number of those years. The two of them were selfless in their dedication to the needs of the youth of Vera Lloyd. Leroy spent many hours beyond the work day, listening and counseling distressed young people after his

administrative work was done. For many youth, the bond continued long after their time was up at Vera Lloyd.

It was not uncommon, even after Leroy retired, for former residents to show up at the door of the Acree home in Monticello, bringing their troubles and their joys to share with Leroy and Louise. Leroy never gave up on any of them. He saw the face of Jesus in every troubled child. Leroy was always available to give them another chance and to offer hope and encouragement. That’s not to say he wasn’t tough on them. But his patience seemed limitless. He was loyal, and forgiving, and had a bottomless supply of energy and commitment to the people and the church he loved.

I suspect the gates of Heaven opened wide to welcome Leroy Acree, and Louise was there to meet him. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.

News from MonticelloMission Groups Arrive on Campus

One of our young ladies has been selected to be the mascot next year for the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils, where she is enrolled for the fall. We had three graduates from Monticello High School in May; they are all planning to further their education. The campus celebrated with a party for the graduates.

One of our young men in our Transition Home has obtained his driver’s license. We are so proud of him for continuing to do well.

Our youth started their summer with “Western Days” with our own staff member, Mr. Jerry McLemore. The youth learned how to groom, saddle and ride horses. For many youth, this was their first exposure to horses. Some were able to conquer their fears by riding for the first time. They also learned how to do a “cowboy cook-out” over an open fire, and cooked cobbler and a cake in a dutch oven. Vera Lloyd appreciates Mr. Jerry for taking his time to share his skills with our youth.

Thanks Mr. Jerry!

Northridge Presbyterian Church from Dallas, Texas, brought 27 youth and six adults to campus for a week. They began each day with a devotional related to giving and a servant’s heart. The group cleaned up the meditation path, built a bridge and built three more elements (the wall, Titanic, and trust fall) that will be used to teach trust, team work, and problem solving. Northridge sponsored evening activities for our youth, including a water slide, pizza party and cook-out. They also volunteered more than 4,000 hours! We appreciate them sharing Christ’s healing love, and their time, talents and donations.

Huntsville Presbyterian Church from Huntsville, Arkansas, may have brought a small mission group to campus , but they left a large impact on our youth. Their group ranged in age from 14 to 67. They power-washed and did all prep work for painting the Acree Pavilion. In addition, they worked all week on life skills with our youth by decorating T-shirts, sewing projects and teaching organizational skills. Vespers were held by the pond and in the pavilion. The evening activities included a pool party, water games, and concluded with a barbecue. Many thanks to FPC Huntsville!

The campus was covered in pink during the 11th Annual Pink Hat Day festivities held on Saturday, April 21st. The event is held to honor Presbyterian Women and their friends who have donated their time, talents and funds during the past year to help the youth who call Vera Lloyd home. This year a total of 75 women (and a few men) represented over 15 churches and included attendees from the Pines and Arkansas Presbyteries. The attendees are encouraged to decorate and wear pink hats to the event. Tours of the six campus homes, adorned in pink, were directed by the youth. A salad buffet luncheon preceded the Parade of Hats and the awards ceremony. The “Best Pink Hat” award was given to Lillian Brooks of Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church for her cell phone adorned pink hat. The “Best Pinked-Up House” award was given to the Trimble Home for the third consecutive year. Their home included pink

curtains, hats, balloons, streamers, cupcakes and a pink cake. The youth and their house parents joined in the fun by wearing white shirts with pink bow-ties. They also created “Trimbleland” where they served hotdogs, popcorn and pink lemonade. The “Traveling Pink Hat” award was presented to Kirk In The Pines Presbyterian Church from Hot Springs Village for their work with the Transition Home and its youth over the past year. The day ended with a “word” from our youth which is always an emotional time for all attendees, but a blessing to see first-hand the positive impact Vera Lloyd is making on the youth God has placed in our care. We can’t wait until next year when we may include the men in the competition, who knows?!

● The “Over The Hill Gang” from Second Presbyterian and other area churches for building new decks and picnic tables. ● We are blessed to have the PW groups from Second continually provide “surprises” for our girls in Barton. Barton House was treated to a trip to the Science Museum during spring break.● FPC - Hot Springs for sending volunteers to paint parts of the Pettus Home and water-seal the new decks.● Holmes Chapel took several youth roller skating in Little Rock during Spring Break and have many activities planned for the youth in the coming months. ● The Women at the Table from Trinity Presbyterian Church, Little Rock, for sponsoring three of our young ladies to attend prom by providing dresses, manicures and pedicures.● Westover Hills Presbyterian, Little Rock, provided a tux for our young man who attended prom. They also had the Trimble House up for an overnight stay and took them to the Discovery Museum and dinner during Spring Break.● “Hummer Ladies Plus One” from Graceminster, Monroe, LA, for providing Walton House with a grill, patio table, chairs and umbrella for their deck and outdoor games.

10 Leadership Lessons Learned the Hard Way

by Jason Salamun

1. If you’re not willing to clean a toilet, you shouldn’t be a leader. 2. Making wise decisions is at the heart of leadership. 3. Trying to make everyone happy is a sure-fire way to make no one happy.

4. If you aren’t fully invested, no one else will be either. 5. Not all leaders are power-hungry tyrants.6. A title doesn’t make you a leader. 7. All leaders need heroes, friends and grasshoppers. 8. Vision really does matter. 9. We are not good at everything. 10. Your inputs should outweigh your outputs.

Wish List

Dear Donors, I can’t believe I have been here for nine months as the Development Officer. It has been said, “time flies when you are having fun!” I am enjoying being in your churches, PW groups and meeting you, our donors, to share our mission with you. I love hearing how each of you is connected to Vera Lloyd. When I travel, I am often asked, “What can I do to help?” We have many opportunities for you to get involved with Vera Lloyd and our youth. As always, non-profits benefit from your financial donations, especially in the current economic climate. In your churches, consider Vera Lloyd as your mission. We are changing the lives of our young people in a spiritual, safe and loving environment. You are helping us do it and you witness the transformation first hand when you visit campus. There are many ways to contribute financially that will have a lasting impact on our programs. Things to consider are planned gifts such as

a bequest by will, charitable remainder trust, life insurance, charitable annuities, and even timberland! I have watched first hand, through my years on the board, the impact such gifts have on the programs for our youth. Please consider how you can help Vera Lloyd in a way that is meaningful to you. It might mean visiting campus, praying for our staff and youth, donating time and talents, donating items or funds. Feel free to contact me, and I will be glad tell you more about Vera Lloyd and our programs for the youth and ways you can help.
