    SKIN CANCER

    Skin cancer is the most common form of

    cancer. Over one million people are

    diagnosed with skin cancer each year. If

    caught early, skin cancer is usually treated

    easily. Skin cancer is more common in

    people who:

    Have spent lots of time in the sun or have

    been sunburned.

    Have fair skin, hair and eyes.Have a family member who has had skin

    cancer.

    Are over the age 50.

    Protect yourself by havingregular skin screenings

    and wearing the

    appropriate sunscreen.

    For extra protection, wear

    a sunhat if you plan to be

    outdoors for an extended

    period of time, and keep inmind the suns peak hours

    are between 10:00am and

    4:00pm

    Heat stroke is a serious medical condition that

    can be life threatening. In heat stroke, the

    body's core temperature rises. Much like a

    fever, extremely high body temperatures can

    lead to permanent damage. Some signs of heat

    stroke include:

    Confusion

    Short, rapid breathing

    Stopping sweatingA fast pulse

    Heat stroke is a medical emergency that

    calls for immediate medical assistance.

    Take these steps to prevent heat stroke during hotweather:

    Don't overexert yourself.

    Drink a quart of fluids an hour.

    Wear loose clothing light in color and fabric, as well as ahat and sunblock, and stay in the shade or indoors if

    possible.

    Open windows and use fans, or turn on air conditioning.

    If you don't have air conditioning, go to a public place

    that does, like a mall, library, or movie theater.

    Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can speed up

    dehydration.

    Damaging your eyes

    with UV rays

    During the summer, you

    might be tempted to look at

    the sky.

    However, if you do so, do

    not look directly at the sun

    and wear sunglasses to

    avoid damaging your eyeswith UV rays.

    Be sure your sunglasses

    filter out 100 percent of UV

    light.

    Dehydration can happen quickly

    in the summer heat.

    Be sure that you have water

    handy whenever you will be inthe heat for a long time.

    Don't forget about children too -

    they may not ask for water.

    Be sure to take frequent waterbreaks during the kids' summer

    activities.

    Driving accidents are the numberone killerfor young people.

    Avoid summer driving accidents

    by: Avoid using cellular phone

    while driving

    Drive at a normal speed and

    obey the speed limit Dont drink and drive

    Keeping summer road trips to

    a reasonable length

    In Vietnam, each year over

    12,000 people drown in water-

    related accidents including

    6,000 children. Summer months also have a

    higher occurrence of water-related injuries.

    Prevent these summertragedies through supervision,

    proper pool safety and

    enforcing rules around the

    water.

    Swim in supervised areas

    Food Poisoning

    Summer eating can be

    enjoyable with fresh

    seasonal produce, outdoor

    eating and entertaining forspecial occasions or family

    gatherings.

    Unfortunately, foodpoisoning is more common

    in summer than at any other

    time of year.

    family from food-borne illness in the summer

    Wash your hands thoroughly before

    handling food and after handling raw

    foods

    Wash dishcloths and tea towels

    regularly and let them dry before you

    use them again

    Cook food thoroughly

    Keep your fridge temperature below

    50C

    Keep raw meat, chicken and seafood

    chilled and away from cooked food

    Avoid handling food when youre not

    Summer and warm weather outdoorand travel-related activities ofteninvolve fire and burn injury hazardsand almost anyone can be injured

    By observing simple preventionguidelines, these activities can be fireand burn-safe as well as fun:

    Keep children at a safe distance fromthe heat and flames while grilling

    Keep water or fire extinguishernearby

    Never add starter fluid to hot/warmcoals

    Never use gasoline to start, enhanceor revive a fire
