    From July 29th till August 19th 2012.

    Etudes from a Festival - the SZIGET is 20 Years Old

    Do you have plenty of ideas for a great short film hiding in the back of your notebook? Do you want toparticipate in one of the biggest festivals in Europe?

    If so, do not hesitate; apply for the three-week intensive summer seminar at the Budapest Film Academy!At this unique seminar/camp, you will gain theoretical and practical film knowledge from industryleaders, take part in an interactive filmmaker group, and shoot your own exciting short film at theSZIGET Festival. At the end of the summer workshop we will create a full-length feature from the bestshort films.

    Our educational model

    The main goal of the intensive three-week workshop is to lead the students from the birth of an idea tothe creation of a short film through production and post-production or in other words, to acquaint themwith the entire filmmaking process. We will train filmmakers who have the necessary knowledge in boththeory and practice, and who are adept in all of the key artistic and technical positions of a film crew.

    The first week of the program writing and pre-productionFrom July 30th (Monday) till August 4th (Saturday).

    During the first week of August, you can participate in theoretical and practical classes. As part of theprogram, we offer courses in screenwriting, producing, cinematography, sound-recording, editing, andacting. Our classes focus on presentational and pitching skills as well.

    The arrival date is the 29th of July, the first day of classes is July 30 th. Each day during this pre-production week, we will hold two three-hour sessions in which we will give you step-by-stepinstructions on how to write a short film screenplay and prepare for the shooting. You will also learn

    about operating an HD camera, getting the best images, recording sound, and producing a film. Beyondthe six-hour daily sessions, students are also encouraged to do test shoots, fulfill their writingassignments, create storyboards for their shorts, and complete other filmmaking related homework.August 5th is the day off, you can view the city.

    The second week the production at the SZIGET festivalFrom August 6th (Monday) till August 12th (Sunday).

    As the main subject of the summer camp is Etudes of a Festival the SZIGET is 20 Years Old,during the second week you will shoot your short film as part of a group at the SZIGET Festival. Eachgroup will have a producer, director, cinematographer, sound recordist, editor, and first assistant director.Within the teams, the roles and tasks will change, so that every student will take on each of the abovementioned positions in at least one short film. By the end of the second week, each crew will shoot at

    least six short movies.

    The main mission for the participants is to create short stories relatedto the ambiance of the festival, in a creative and awareness-raisingway. The films can be dramatic scenes about how visitors of theSZIGET make acquaintances, start friendships, and fall in love orthey can be visually exciting, experimental works and documentariesthat consider the event from different perspectives.

    During the second week, while shooting at the SZIGET, we will also holdediting classes at our stand in the festival. Students can begin to create a

    rough assembly of their shorts and receive advice about what re-shoots oradditional shots might be necessary for their movies. We will also holdproduction meetings about the progress of their films and will have otherinstructive filmmaking presentations available for them.

    The third week the post-productionFrom August 13th (Monday) till August 18th (Saturday)

    The third week program covers the entire postproduction process. First, students will cut the materialthey filmed during the second week. We will teach the participants how to use the AVID software and

    how to apply the most effective editing techniques. Then, we will perform sound editing, create soundeffects, and add a music track if necessary. The final phase is sound mix and color timing. We will alsogive an introductory session of the 3D filmmaking programs that we teach in detail during the fallsemester of the Budapest Film Academy. The last day of classes is August 18th; the departure date isAugust 19th.

    Our mission the feature film and scholarship fund

    Besides teaching our students, the main goal of our summer university is to create a full-length featurefrom the best short films, send it film festivals, and sell it theatrically and for television stations all overthe world. The income from this feature film will fund scholarships to the Budapest Film Academy/Etvs Lornd University undergraduate and graduate program, which will go to the creators of the bestshort films.

    To apply the Early Bird Special

    To apply for our summer university program,you need to fill out the attached applicationform and return it to [email protected] by the 15th of July, 2012. There is no

    age limit if your dream is to make movies,this is where you want to be!

    The fee for the entire program is 2550 Euros,but if you apply before the 15th of June, you canget an Early Bird Special a 25% discountthat will allow you to participate for only:

    1950 Euros!

    This program fee includes all accommodation, education andtechnical/equipment costs. (Food is provided by the participantson their own.) As a participant of the Budapest Film Academyssummer university program, you will also receive an entranceticket to the SZIGET Festival, as the practical classes and theentire shooting will take place on the grounds of the event.

    What should you do if you have already a ticket for the SZIGETFestival? In this case, we can give you a 110 Euro discount from theprice of our summer university program!

    Budapest Film Academy brand Filmmaking as both art and business

    Budapest Film Academy (BFA) andEtvs Lornd University (ELTE)have joined forces and launched anEnglish and Hungarian language filmacademy offering practical film studiesto students who would like to becomeindustry professionals.

    The academys faculty is made up of highly qualified academic scholars and leading figures and awardwinners from across the film industry, who lend not only their knowledge, but their networking tostudents. The most gifted students soar under the mentorship of these experienced foreign and localprofessionals. The Academy also facilitates semester-long exchange programs with institutions abroad.

    Please note that our courses are also available to young filmmakers who are not currently attending aninstitution of higher education.

    Budapest Film Academy / Etvs Lornd University ECTS credit system

    Etvs Lornd Universitys Faculty of Film Studiessupervises the BFA courses, while ELTE providesECTS credits for them. This cooperation enables notonly Etvs Lornd University students to attend BFAcourses, but students from other universities as well,who may transfer the credits gained here if their studiesare similar.

    The transfer of credits is possible thanks to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). This new

    system was introduced to the members of the European Union, with the aim of improving transferabilitybetween different studies and institutions within the EU.

    THE SZIGET IS 20 YEARS OLD!

    The SZIGET Festival in Budapest, Hungary is one of thelargest music and cultural festivals in Europe. It is heldevery August on the Northern Budapest budai-sziget ("Old Buda Island"), a leafy island of

    108 hectares on the Danube. Sziget means island.Currently it holds more than 1000 performances each year.

    The week-long festival has grown from a relatively low-profile student event in 1993 into one of the largestEuropean rock festivals, with about half of all visitorscoming from outside Hungary, particularly the UK andFrance. It also has a dedicated "party train" service thattransports festivalgoers from Western Europe.
